When I was a little girl I used to pick the leaves from weeds to make play salads for my parents. What I didn’t realize then was that those leaves I picked were actually edible! It wasn’t until many years later, long after I stopped making dirt pots and grass dolls, that I discovered that the weed I was so fond of, was actually an herb. That herb was plantain.

Nutritional Benefits of Plantain

Plantain leaves are best consumed while still young and tender. They have a nutty asparagus like taste that is delicious when pan fried or when added to salads. A naturally healthy herb, plantain leaves offer the following nutritional support (source):

Formulating An Herbal Plantain Salve Recipe

Mountain Rose Herbs has a new roasted cocoa butter available that I really wanted to try. So I was really pleased when it arrived at my doorstep last week. This stuff smells amazing. I love that it’s suited for both food and cosmetic use.

As it smells so wonderful, however, I really wanted to create a product that would highlight the natural scent of the roasted cocoa butter. I also knew I wanted something to create a natural skin care product that would be suitable for seasonal skin care and gift giving. Therefore, in the end, I opted for crafting a simple plantain salve recipe with a cocoa mint scent.

I love the simplicity of my natural plantain salve recipe. It’s formulated using just five simple ingredients – roasted cocoa butter, plantain herbal oil, beeswax, rosehip seed oil and peppermint essential oil. The cocoa mint scent, of course, is naturally derived from the inclusion of the organic peppermint essential oil and roasted cocoa butter.

Roasted Cocoa Butter

The roasted cocoa butter wafers from Mountain Rose Herbs aren’t deodorized. Therefore they retain their natural cocoa scent. Expeller pressed from the roasted seeds of the cocoa tree, these cocoa butter wafers are naturally rich in vitamin E. Plantain Herbal Oil

While plantain herbal oil is easy to make, you can also enjoy the convenience of buying pre-made plantain herbal oil. This is especially helpful if you’re wanting to make natural skin care products using plantain herbal oil right away. Or if plantain is out of season throughout the cold winter months.

I used plantain herbal oil from Mountain Rose Herbs for my simple plantain salve recipe. An emollient oil formulated using solar infused plantain olive oil and vitamin E, this herbal plantain oil is especially nourishing for dry hands and skin. Crafted with certified organic Plantago major leaves, this natural herbal oil is perfect for gardeners, wild harvesters, climbers – or anyone else who works with their hands frequently. Rosehip Seed Oil

Simple Plantain Salve Recipe

Ingredients:

1 oz. roasted cocoa butter
1 oz. plantain herbal oil
1 oz. beeswax
.5 oz. rosehip seed oil
20 drops peppermint essential oil

Instructions:

You will need a digital scale to weigh out the ingredients for my plantain salve recipe. In addition you’ll also need a one or two cup heat safe glass measuring cup (such as Pyrex) and a utensil to stir your salve. I typically use a fork. You’ll also need containers for your plantain herbal salve. I used 1 oz. metal tins with rolled edge covers.

Once you’ve gathered the ingredients and supplies you’ll need, you’re ready to begin.

Start by weighing out the roasted cocoa butter wafers and beeswax. Combine in a heat safe glass container. Then heat either on the stove top using the double boiler method or in your microwave at 30% power until halfway melted.

Next, weigh out the rosehip seed oil and the plantain herbal oil. Add these ingredients to the same container as the cocoa butter and beeswax. Continue gently heating the ingredients until all of the ingredients for the plantain salve recipe have completely melted.

Once melted, remove the plantain salve mixture from heat and stir to combine. Then stir in 20 drops of organic peppermint essential oils.

Now pour your plantain herbal salve evenly into five 1 oz. tins. Allow the salve to cool completely then pop on the lids and it’s ready to go.

To use, simply apply to affected area as desired and massage in. You can also keep my plantain salve tucked inside your purse to use a natural cocoa mint lip balm throughout the year.

About My Amazon Black Drawing Salve Recipe

My Amazon black salve recipe offers an exciting twist off the traditional Amish black drawing salves. It’s similar to an Amish black drawing salve in that it contains activated charcoal. However, it also contains three ingredients found specifically in Brazil. These ingredients are volcanic black clay, buriti oil and bacuri butter.

Bacuri butter, which has been historically used by Brazilian natives as a natural remedy for snake and spider bites, plays a key role in drawing out matter from skin. This makes it an effective remedy for insect bites, stings, boils and even acne. While buriti oil, which is bountiful in vitamin A, promotes skin health to hasten the healing process.

Brazilian volcanic mud black clay, like bacuri butter, also works at pulling or drawing out moisture from skin. Naturally rich in silica, magnesium, calcium and iron, this clay is especially effective against acne and other problematic skin conditions. The black clay available from Paris Fragrances originates from the slow and millenarian erosion of rocks. This results in a diversity of minerals that are part of its natural composition. The clay is then sustainably extracted in the region of Minas Gerais in the South of Brazil. This is where the largest deposit of kaolin clay can be found, caused as a result of the erosion and sedimentation of rocks in the Serra do Mar.

Natural Amazon Black Salve Recipe

Ingredients:

.75 oz. buriti oil
.5 oz. activated charcoal
.25 oz. bacuri butter
.25 oz. beeswax
.25 oz. black clay
12 drops rosemary essential oil
12 drops lavender essential oil

Instructions:

You will need a digital scale to weigh out the ingredients for my Amazon black salve recipe.

Begin by weighing out the buriti oil, bacuri butter and beeswax into a small glass, heat safe measuring cup. Slowly heat using the double method until all of the beeswax has melted.

In the meantime, weigh out the activated charcoal and black clay into a separate container.

Once the beeswax, butter and oil mixture has completely liquefied, remove from heat. Add twelve drops each of both rosemary and lavender essential oil, then stir to combine.

Now add the dry ingredients to the liquid ingredients. Slowly fold them into the salve, then mix well to evenly combine the charcoal and clay throughout the salve.

Finally, pour the salve into your containers of choice. (I used 1 oz. metal tins, then decorated the lids with 1″ round stickers.)

Winter can be dreary. It’s only just fall and it’s already getting dark sooner. The leaves are starting to change colors and the sky seems to be gray a bit more often. What Is Seasonal Depression?

Seasonal depression, also now called seasonal affective disorder or SAD for short, can strike at any time of the year – not just fall and winter. While most common during the fall and winter months, the symptoms of seasonal depression are much the same regardless of when it occurs. Symptoms include feelings of depression, trouble sleeping, low energy or fatigue, changes in weight or appetite, difficulty concentrating, agitation or anxiety and loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed.

What Causes Seasonal Depression?

There is no clear cause for seasonal depression. However, it is widely believed that there are three main factors that can lead to seasonal depression. This includes changes in your biological clock caused by a decrease in sunlight. The reduced levels of sunlight during both fall and winter are then believed to result in a drop in serotonin levels in the brain. It can also cause changes in melatonin levels. How Can I Reduce My Chances of Developing Seasonal Depression?

Much of modern Western medicine seems to focus on treating the symptoms of depression rather than the cause. (A sad result of big pharma.) This in turn leads to an endless cycle, riddled with side effects, and no real recovery. (Much like my struggle to find natural treatment options for fibromyalgia.) The good news is, you don’t have to take anti-depression drugs, such as SSRI’s which increase levels of serotonin in the brain, to manage your seasonal depression. In fact, it’s possible you can prevent your seasonal depression completely by taking steps to improve your gut health.

Rectifying my own gut health has been paramount in both my physical and emotional recovery. I spent a good part of my adult life struggling with depression. Now that I no longer struggle with depression like I used to, I am completely sold on treating health issues through nutrition as a first step.

What Are Other Ways I Tackle Seasonal Depression?

In addition to supplementing your diet with probiotics, there are also other natural ways that you can help prevent or improve your seasonal depression.

Adaptogens

You’ve probably been hearing a lot of buzz about adaptogens lately. Adaptogenic herbs such as ashwagandha, ginseng, mushrooms, milk thistle, gotu kola and holy basil are believed to support overall health and wellness. They work as non-specific remedies that increase our bodies resistance to a broad spectrum of harmful factors of different physical, chemical and biological natures. They are also believed to help our bodies adapt and respond better to stress.  By incorporating adaptogens into your daily diet you can further support your emotional health.

Adding a vitamin B complex along with ginseng to your daily supplements is a simple way to help boost energy to overcome fatigue and exhaustion caused by seasonal depression.

There are scores of studies that have shown that art has the power to heal. Not only is art a great way to express yourself – and a lot of fun! – it’s another natural alternative to big pharma medications. As I create things for a living, one of my favorite ways to feel like I’m not working is to engage in group classes and projects with friends. Crafting with friends or in a class setting allows me the opportunity to make mistakes and just have fun. I also find that socializing is immensely helpful. CBD Oil for Fibromyalgia.

Not all CBD oil is created equal. Trust me, I know. In my quest to find natural alternatives to pain relief for my fibromyalgia, I tried more than six different brands of CBD oil. While they all worked great at reducing anxiety and inflammation, finding one that tackled my worst pain was a challenge.

In part, this was because not all brands of CBD oil were geared specifically toward fighting pain. On the other side of that, fibromyalgia pain is tricky. This is because pinpointing the origin of fibromyalgia pain is challenging. Fibro pain moves throughout various points of the body. It’s not specifically in your joints. Or your muscles. It’s widespread and goes where it pleases.

What causes fibromyalgia?

It’s theorized that fibromyalgia, in layman’s terms, is caused by the brain misinterpreting signals from our body. So when we are particularly stressed, or in fear of a negative or painful outcome (whether physical or emotional,) our brains react to that stress or fear by sending out pain signals to various parts of our body. This is why, the majority (if not all) of the people who experience fibromyalgia pain, have experienced either a physical or emotional trauma at some point in their lives. The prior (or ongoing) abuse changes the way our brain handles stress and pain. (Source.)

This is also why, reducing stress and practicing meditation, can help fibromyalgia pain. And why, when we get upset, our pain increases. It’s also why the practices you learn through alternative treatments, such as the Curable app, can help reduce that pain. The methods primarily focus on retraining how your brain thinks and handles stress. It’s also why some fibromyalgia sufferers find relief with SSRI drugs. SSRI’s are able to reduce our stress and anxiety chemically. For others, however, an infection or an illness can also lead to the development of fibromyalgia.

Fibro is not well understood and many doctors are still uncertain about how to treat it. However, short and even long term use of synthetic opioid pain relievers, such as Tramadol, are both addictive and cause worsening severity of pain over time. I’ve found, personally, that pain killers absolutely do lead to increased sensitivity to pain. Therefore, when I stopped taking pain killers and instead focused on natural supplements that targeted inflammation, anxiety and healthy stress response, my pain actually decreased.

 

How does CBD oil benefit the body?

This is what led me to explore adaptogens. Like adaptogenic herbs such as ashwagandha, maca and holy basil, CBD oil is also an adaptogen. Or, basically, a non-specific remedy that increases our bodies resistance to a broad spectrum of harmful factors of different physical, chemical and biological natures.

CBD oil works because it interacts with our bodies through the endogenous cannabinoid system (ECS) or endocannabinoid system. Discovered in the 1980’s, the endocannabinoid system regulates the body’s general state of balance. It has a positive impact on mood, sleep, appetite and hormone regulation as well as our bodies pain and immune response. As such, the endocannabinoid system is an extremely important regulator within our bodies. However, few of us take steps to support this system as cannabinoids are not a part of our normal daily diet. (Learn more about the endocannabinoid system.)

In addition to its benefit as an herbal supplement, CBD oil also has numerous medical indications including anxiety, epilepsy, inflammation, cancer and chronic pain. And it’s not just for people either. All mammals, including dogs and cats, benefit in the same way we do. My 9 1/2 year old dachshund has been able to jump onto the couch again despite arthritis in his front knees since taking CBD oil for pets. You can even find CBD oil infused edible treats for both cats and dogs so even picky eaters can get the endocannabinoids they benefit from.

How much CBD oil do I need?

I’ve found that taking a daily CBD oil supplement at a lower dose works best for long term maintenance of my fibromyalgia. It helps with anxiety, stress and insomnia. However, when I have a pain flare up, that maintenance dosage isn’t enough to bring my pain level back down. Therefore, for flare ups, I have typically take between a 50 mg to 100 mg serving twice a day until the pain dissipates.

The packaging of your CBD oil should indicate on the back how many mg are in a serving. Most oils offer between 6 mg and 35 mg per serving. The amount of CBD oil per serving is also indicative of how much more you’ll pay for your CBD oil.

If you can’t find the amount of CBD oil per serving on your packaging, you can determine the amount yourself. For example, if a 30 ml bottle of CBD oil contains 700 mg of CBD oil, simply divide the total amount of CBD in mg by the number of ml of oil in the bottle. Therefore, 700mg divided 30ml equals 24 mg per 1 ml dose, or one dropper full. While CBD 1500 mg will have 50 mg of CBD per 1 ml serving.

How you will react to CBD oil varies. It is different for everyone. Factors such as age, sex, weight and diet all determine how CBD oil influences your body. As does the way in which CBD oil is administered. Women tend to experience more pain relief from CBD oil than men. And applying CBD oil under your tongue versus consuming it by way of an edible product changes the time frame in which your body processes and reacts to it. However, for most people, you’ll notice the full effects of your CBD oil dosage about 45 minutes to an hour after consumption.

 

Full Spectrum Hemp CBD Oil

CBD Natural Pain Relief Salve Recipe

Ingredients:

.25 oz. neem oil
.25 oz. andiroba oil (or arnica herbal oil)
.25 oz. Spark Naturals CBD Oil (in strength of choice)
.25 oz. white cosmetic beeswax
12 drops rosemary essential oil

Instructions:

You will need a digital scale to weigh out the ingredients for this CBD natural pain relief salve recipe.

Weigh out and combine the beeswax, neem oil and andiroba oil in a small glass Pyrex measuring cup or similar. Slowly heat over low using the double boiler method.

Once all of the beeswax has melted, remove from heat. Then weigh out and stir in the CBD oil. Using a dropper or graduated plastic transfer pipette, add 12 drops of rosemary essential oil.

Mix again, then pour into two .5 oz. containers of your choice. I used two 1/2 oz. white polypropylene double wall radius jars for my CBD natural pain relief salve recipe. (You can find these containers at SKS Bottle & Packaging here.)

Once your CBD natural pain relief salve cools, screw the lids onto the jars and label as desired for personal use or gifting. (I used labels with a fake company name simply for demonstration purposes.)

Sugar, gluten and dairy all can trigger inflammation in the body which leads to lessened blood flow to the brain. By consuming lean protein and good-quality fats, your body can better stabilize blood sugar and support the pre-frontal cortex. This in turn often helps to reduce the impulsivity that accompanies ADHD.

Additionally, your should also avoid foods with excess sodium, MSG, HVP (hydrolyzed vegetable protein), yeast extract, caffeine and sugar. It’s also advised that you avoid artificial sweeteners with biochemical alterations as they can interfere with cognitive functions and emotions. In addition, whenever possible, foods with artificial coloring, preservatives and allergens should be removed from your diet as well.

Tips for Clean Eating

Following are easy guidelines for eating better. It’s simple for anyone to incorporate these clean eating tips into their daily diet to support better nutrition.

  • Eat more fruits and vegetables, choosing organic options when available.
  • Eat more whole grains. In other words, grains that look similar to their harvested state. This includes farro, barley, quinoa, wild rice and oats. Not only will these offer more fiber, you’ll also benefit from the extra protein, antioxidants and inflammation-fighting phytonutrients.
  • Consume less meat. Not only is eating less meat healthier for you, it’s also better for the environment. When you do eat meat, opt for natural meats (sans the antibiotics and growth hormones) such as grass fed beef or wild caught salmon. You should also reduce your intake of processed meats such as sausage, bacon and cold cuts, if not omitting them all together.
  • Avoid processed foods made with hydrogenated vegetable oils, artificial colors, refined grains and high amounts of sugar.
  • Limit your sugar intake. Not only does sugar cause harmful inflammation that can lead to illnesses such as Type 2 diabetes and heart disease, it’s filled with empty calories that leave you feeling hungry a short time later.
  • As with sugar, it’s also important to limit your salt intake. Many of us consume well above the recommended daily intake of salt. If using salt when cooking, use it sparingly. I personally like to substitute pink Himalayan salt for sea salt when I cook for the added vitamins and minerals.

There are a number nutrients that, when intake is increased either through the foods you eat or supplements, can help with ADHD symptoms.
