Riot Rooster Indie Craft Fair

Yesterday evening my dear friend, Bambi, and I went to the 8th annual Riot Rooster Indie Craft Fair. This two-day funky market and bazaar takes place every year the weekend before Thanksgiving and is a mecca of handmade, upcycled, recycled, odd and useful gifts made by regional artists and makers. This was the first year we both were actually able to attend and we were not disappointed.

The annual Riot Rooster Indie Craft Fair is an annual fundraiser for Girls Rock RoanokeGirls Rock Roanoke (GRR!) is a volunteer-run, community based organization in the Roanoke Valley. At Girls Rock Roanoke camp, girls ages 8-16 will form bands, write their own songs, and perform at a final Showcase. They also participate in workshops on women’s music history, self defense, screen printing, DIY clothing, body confidence, stage presence, teamwork, songwriting, tech talk, and more. Their aim is to support girls as they develop self-confidence, amplify their voices, and fully realize their power to make a difference in the world. Camp activities and volunteers create a nurturing space that fosters creativity, communication, collaboration, and inclusivity. You can learn more about this organization or simply make a donation by visiting their facebook page here. You can also find them online here.

While we weren’t able to buy everything we wanted at this year’s Riot Rooster Indie Craft Fair, Bambi and I did make the rounds and snatch up business cards for future purchases. Bambi purchased some pretty awesome upcycled arm warmers to wear at work now that the weather is getting colder as well as a tiny pottery vase from Entropy Designs.

Handmade Pottery Mug by Entropy Designs

I also made a purchase from Entropy Designs and bought this super cute pottery mug as well as a fun lidded container with a similar design but in yellow. (You can find Entropy Designs on Etsy here.)

Lucky Buttons Jewelry

Bambi and I also both made purchases from Lucky Buttons, owned by two rather fabulous local Roanoke favorites, Jordan and Lucy. Bambi and I have both known Jordan and Lucy for many years through their band, Another Roadside Attraction. (You can have a listen at ReverbNation here.) In addition, Lucy is also much of the energy and life behind Girls Rock Roanoke.

Handmade Coin Ring by Lucky Buttons Jewelry

Bambi and I both bought rings from Lucky Buttons. I bought this ring made from a commemorative coin from the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Bambi bought one from Wisconsin. Both of our rings were just a smidge big, but Jordan was able to quickly re-size them for us on the spot!

Handmade Wheat Penny Bracelet from Lucky Buttons

I also bought this fantastic bracelet made from wheat pennies. I LOVE the magnetic clasp.

RoadSide Miracle Mustache Wax

And I bought some of Jordan’s locally famous RoadSide Miracle Mustache Wax for my boyfriend. (You can find Lucky Buttons on Etsy here.)

DIY Beauty Kits from Oleum Vera // Oleum Vera® takes inspiration from bountiful nature to create products that empower consumers to reclaim their beauty regimen, using fresh ingredients from their pantry and fridge, natural clays, and organic butters and oils.

On November 1st, Oleum Vera® launched their new line of DIY beauty kits, with each kit focusing on the natural, the fresh and the edible. I was the lucky recipient of their “Off to a Good Start” beauty kit which arrived beautifully packaged last week.

Not only was this DIY beauty kit filled with wonderful organic ingredients, but the ingredients also came in very sturdy, quality containers that allow them to be re-used again and again. I was honestly floored by the quality and truly impressed with this new beauty brand.

Who is Oleum Vera®?

Based in Montreal, Canada, Oleum Vera® takes inspiration from nature in order to create natural beauty products that empower consumers to reclaim their beauty regimen, using fresh ingredients from their pantry and fridge along with natural clays, organic butters and oils.

This new beauty brand is anti-GMO, pro-customization, pro-organic and pro-sustainability. Their philosophy is to provide women and men with the ingredients and the knowledge needed to re-appropriate their body care routine and tailor it to meet their own unique skin and hair needs.

In opposition of the mainstream beauty industry which has long relied using on harmful chemicals, one-size-fits all mass production, and unsustainable sourcing, Oleum Vera® hopes to be a breath of fresh air for increasingly knowledgeable consumers.

Each of Oleum Vera®’s DIY beauty kits includes an assortment of plant-based oils and essential oils, and in some cases, powdered clays, algae, and dried flower petals. All of the ingredients are handpicked for their numerous benefits to the skin, hair and senses, always with sustainability in mind.

These DIY beauty kits are certified 100% organic, and each one comes with a booklet filled with customizable recipes and illustrated how-to’s. Each kit retails at $74.95. You can find their full line of DIY beauty kits now available here.

The "Off to a Good Start" kit, available here, is a Do-it-Yourself Organic Face Cleansing Kit. It comes with three organic plant based carrier oils (moringa, avocado, castor, and sweet almond), four essential oils (lemongrass, tea tree, peppermint and oregano), white kaolin and bentonite clay, rose petals, and lavender buds. It also includes a glass bottle for mixing your custom face cleansing oil, a jar with a lid and spoon for creating exfoliating grains, and a tiny funnel and dropper.

DIY Exfoliating Facial Grains with almonds and oats for normal or combination skin!

Using a recipe from the informational booklet inside my kit, I created their almond and oats exfoliant for normal or combination skin.

DIY Exfoliating Facial Grains with almonds and oats for normal or combination skin!

DIY Exfoliating Grains Face Scrub

To make your own DIY Exfoliating Facial Grains with almonds and oats for normal or combination skin, you’ll need:

4 Tablespoons (60 mL) organic oats, finely ground
2 Tablespoons (30 mL) organic almond meal
1 sachet (.7 oz.) kaolin clay
half a sachet (.17 oz.) bentonite clay
half a sachet (.05 oz.) organic rose petals or lavender buds

Crumble the petals or buds between your fingers, then combine all the ingredients.

To use your exfoliating grains:

To use your exfoliating facial grains, place a small amount of the scrub into a small dish or the palm of your hand. Add a bit of your favorite cleansing oil – also from a recipe in the kit! – and mix with your fingers.

Allow the oil to soak into the scrub for 30 seconds or so, then massage the scrub onto your face using a circular upward motion.

All the the scrub to rest on your face like a mask, or simply rinse off right away and pat dry.

DIY Milk and Honey Exfoliant for Dry or Sensitive Skin

A milk & honey exfoliant for dry or sensitive skin (pictured above) was yet another beauty recipe included with the “Off to a Good Start” DIY beauty kit.

If you’d like to discover all of the beauty recipes that Oleum Vera® has to offer in their new DIY beauty kits, you can visit their website here.
