It’s easy to feel overwhelmed throughout the fall and winter holiday season. On top of the pressures of work and parenting, there are holiday activities to contend with. Not to mention all those holiday family obligations that we sometimes wish we didn’t have. Like you, there are days I just need a break. For the rest of the year, I’ve promised myself I will do just that.

As I tend to isolate myself more during cold weather months, part of my plan for self care is to get out of the house and socialize more. To help me find activities I know that I’ll enjoy, I’ve been keeping a steady eye on upcoming Facebook events. For events I’m interested in, I mark as “interested” so I get a reminder via Facebook a few days before. However, for events I’m kind of crazy about, they get put on my paper wall calendar. (Yes. Yes. I have one of those.) This way my favorite events won’t slip my mind.

While my final decision for Halloween activities is still up in the air, I have committed myself to several activities for October. Events like an art exhibition opening at a local gallery, music at a local restaurant, a monthly Wine & Art Wednesday, and another monthly event pegged Rooftop Riot for my BFF’s birthday.

Of course, since my boyfriend Greg goes to most of these things with me, I’m having to schedule around football. Luckily, most live bands play at restaurants with televisions. (So he can’t cop out. Bwahahaha.) He’s been a real sport about trying new things though. It can be hard to put yourself out there if you don’t a sidekick. So he keeps me honest so I don’t bail to binge on Netflix instead.

Last month Greg tagged along for Wine & Art Wednesday. It’s run by my friend, Hillary, so it’s a great opportunity not just to see my friends, but to meet new people AND get crafty. I took along some wine from my new Winc shipment (the 2016 L’Atelier du Sud Red Blend and 2017 Finke’s Sparkling White Blend, both of which were amazing!) and we spent the evening crafting our own DIY suncatchers.

While suncatchers seem like they might be seasonally specific, I think that this craft project is great for anytime of the year. This would be a great project for winter to help you overcome seasonal depression and allow a little more light into your life. Plus it’s the perfect chance to create imaginative snowflakes or winter themed flamingos for your windows!

There are several things that I really love about this DIY suncatcher craft project. One, you repurpose old or scratched CD’s for this project, so it’s not going to cost a lot of money. Two, you don’t need to be an artist to make these suncatchers. You can easily trace your favorite designs onto the cd’s. Or, you can freehand an abstract idea. And three, this DIY suncatcher craft project is amazingly therapeutic. I’d had a terrible week leading up to making these suncatchers. However, by the time Wine & Art Wednesday was over, I was in great spirits.

DIY Suncatcher Craft Project Tutorial

Supplies & Materials:

Blank CDs
Tape
Scissors
Permanent Markers or Paint Pens
Suncatcher Paint
Fishing Line
Colorful Beads, optional

You’ll begin by removing the painted layer from your CD.

To do this, simply place a piece of tape over the painted side of the CD with one end hanging off the edge of the CD. Lift the edge of the tape by the outer edge of the CD slightly. Then take a pair of scissors and scratch off a small amount of the coating under the outer edge of the tape.

Press the tape back down over the scratch you made. Then pull the tape away from the outer edge of the CD. That painted layer or coating will pull right off! (I never would have believed it was THIS easy!) Repeat as needed until all of the coating has been removed and you’re left with only the clear CD plastic.

Next, use a permanent marker or paint marker to draw your design onto the CD. You can either trace a design onto the CD by placing an image or mandala pattern under the CD or you can draw your own design.

Once you’ve drawn the outline for your DIY suncatcher craft project design, you can either use suncatcher paints or permanent markers to color in the design.

Allow your suncatcher to dry completely, then tie a length of fishing line through the hole in the CD so it can be displayed.

About My Amazon Black Drawing Salve Recipe

My Amazon black salve recipe offers an exciting twist off the traditional Amish black drawing salves. It’s similar to an Amish black drawing salve in that it contains activated charcoal. However, it also contains three ingredients found specifically in Brazil. These ingredients are volcanic black clay, buriti oil and bacuri butter.

Bacuri butter, which has been historically used by Brazilian natives as a natural remedy for snake and spider bites, plays a key role in drawing out matter from skin. This makes it an effective remedy for insect bites, stings, boils and even acne. While buriti oil, which is bountiful in vitamin A, promotes skin health to hasten the healing process.

Brazilian volcanic mud black clay, like bacuri butter, also works at pulling or drawing out moisture from skin. Naturally rich in silica, magnesium, calcium and iron, this clay is especially effective against acne and other problematic skin conditions. The black clay available from Paris Fragrances originates from the slow and millenarian erosion of rocks. This results in a diversity of minerals that are part of its natural composition. The clay is then sustainably extracted in the region of Minas Gerais in the South of Brazil. This is where the largest deposit of kaolin clay can be found, caused as a result of the erosion and sedimentation of rocks in the Serra do Mar.

Natural Amazon Black Salve Recipe

Ingredients:

.75 oz. buriti oil
.5 oz. activated charcoal
.25 oz. bacuri butter
.25 oz. beeswax
.25 oz. black clay
12 drops rosemary essential oil
12 drops lavender essential oil

Instructions:

You will need a digital scale to weigh out the ingredients for my Amazon black salve recipe.

Begin by weighing out the buriti oil, bacuri butter and beeswax into a small glass, heat safe measuring cup. Slowly heat using the double method until all of the beeswax has melted.

In the meantime, weigh out the activated charcoal and black clay into a separate container.

Once the beeswax, butter and oil mixture has completely liquefied, remove from heat. Add twelve drops each of both rosemary and lavender essential oil, then stir to combine.

Now add the dry ingredients to the liquid ingredients. Slowly fold them into the salve, then mix well to evenly combine the charcoal and clay throughout the salve.

Finally, pour the salve into your containers of choice. (I used 1 oz. metal tins, then decorated the lids with 1″ round stickers.)

(It’s important to note that my Amazon black salve recipe may stain fabrics it comes into contact with. Therefore, for use, it’s advised you cover the salve with a bandage after it’s applied to the affected area.)

Winter can be dreary. It’s only just fall and it’s already getting dark sooner. The leaves are starting to change colors and the sky seems to be gray a bit more often. (Although it’s possible part of that is due to the insane amount of rain we’ve had lately.) As the weather cools off we also find ourselves stuck indoors more than we’d like. This in turn can lead to those dreaded winter blues.

This year I’m determined to keep my spirits up and skirt seasonal depression all together. I’d like to say I’m going to be one of those ridiculously happy people who’s always positive and never stops smiling – but that will seriously never happen.

Resting bitch face aside, I tend to get emotionally involved in most things I do. I scream, cry and clap at television shows. I get that weird bizarro paranoia that something is wrong or I’m gonna screw up somehow when my monthly cycle hits. And the current state of our political circus leaves me terrified even when I avoid the news and filter my social news feed to hide the drama.

With over forty winters under my belt I’m no stranger to seasonal depression. Managing fibro on top of that is no easy feat. So I completely understand the challenges you face when you get those winter blues. Unfortunately, there is no magic pill you can swallow to send your seasonal depression packing. What Is Seasonal Depression?

Seasonal depression, also now called seasonal affective disorder or SAD for short, can strike at any time of the year – not just fall and winter. While most common during the fall and winter months, the symptoms of seasonal depression are much the same regardless of when it occurs. Symptoms include feelings of depression, trouble sleeping, low energy or fatigue, changes in weight or appetite, difficulty concentrating, agitation or anxiety and loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed.

What Causes Seasonal Depression?

There is no clear cause for seasonal depression. However, it is widely believed that there are three main factors that can lead to seasonal depression. This includes changes in your biological clock caused by a decrease in sunlight. The reduced levels of sunlight during both fall and winter are then believed to result in a drop in serotonin levels in the brain. It can also cause changes in melatonin levels. This can disrupt sleep cycles and affect mood.

How Can I Reduce My Chances of Developing Seasonal Depression?

Much of modern Western medicine seems to focus on treating the symptoms of depression rather than the cause. (A sad result of big pharma.) This in turn leads to an endless cycle, riddled with side effects, and no real recovery. (Much like my struggle to find natural treatment options for fibromyalgia.) The good news is, you don’t have to take anti-depression drugs, such as SSRI’s which increase levels of serotonin in the brain, to manage your seasonal depression. In fact, it’s possible you can prevent your seasonal depression completely by taking steps to improve your gut health.

Rectifying my own gut health has been paramount in both my physical and emotional recovery. I spent a good part of my adult life struggling with depression. Now that I no longer struggle with depression like I used to, I am completely sold on treating health issues through nutrition as a first step.

The Gut-Brain Axis

It’s widely believed that the gut-brain axis has an impact on both our emotional health and physical health. A diet that primarily consists of high fat/low fiber foods decreases the gut microbiome diversity in our bodies, disrupting the gut-brain axis. When this happens, our bodies become more vulnerable to physical illnesses. Recent studies have also indicated that poor gut health affects our emotional health as well. Therefore, not only does poor gut health cause depression, it can also lead to worsening depression. By eating a healthy diet that supports gut health, you can also help support your emotional well being.

What Are Other Ways I Tackle Seasonal Depression?

In addition to supplementing your diet with probiotics, there are also other natural ways that you can help prevent or improve your seasonal depression.

Adaptogens

You’ve probably been hearing a lot of buzz about adaptogens lately. Adaptogenic herbs such as ashwagandha, ginseng, mushrooms, milk thistle, gotu kola and holy basil are believed to support overall health and wellness. They work as non-specific remedies that increase our bodies resistance to a broad spectrum of harmful factors of different physical, chemical and biological natures. They are also believed to help our bodies adapt and respond better to stress.  By incorporating adaptogens into your daily diet you can further support your emotional health.

Adding a vitamin B complex along with ginseng to your daily supplements is a simple way to help boost energy to overcome fatigue and exhaustion caused by seasonal depression.

CBD oil is another example of an adaptogen. It has been shown to help support our mood, sleep, appetite and hormone regulation. In addition it can also reduce pain and boost immune response. While staying active does require a small commitment of your time, it will not only improve your mood but your physical health as well.

Get Creative

There are scores of studies that have shown that art has the power to heal. Not only is art a great way to express yourself – and a lot of fun! – it’s another natural alternative to big pharma medications. A powerful therapeutic tool, art and other creative activities have the ability to ease stress, anxiety and depression. Additionally, it can also aid with communication challenges and help stop cognitive decline.

What’s so great about creativity, is that you don’t need to possess a natural talent in order to express yourself through the things you create. Anyone can draw, paint or knit. And it’s a lot cheaper than therapy. So put together that photo album you’ve been putting off. Color a mandala or create a paper mobile. Anything that allows you to relax and have fun.

As I create things for a living, one of my favorite ways to feel like I’m not working is to engage in group classes and projects with friends. Crafting with friends or in a class setting allows me the opportunity to make mistakes and just have fun. I also find that socializing is immensely helpful. So host a DIY nail polish night or a pumpkin painting party at your home. Or take a class at your local community center or art center. I guarantee you will feel better for having done so!

CBD Oil for Fibromyalgia.

Not all CBD oil is created equal. Trust me, I know. In my quest to find natural alternatives to pain relief for my fibromyalgia, I tried more than six different brands of CBD oil. While they all worked great at reducing anxiety and inflammation, finding one that tackled my worst pain was a challenge.

In part, this was because not all brands of CBD oil were geared specifically toward fighting pain. On the other side of that, fibromyalgia pain is tricky. This is because pinpointing the origin of fibromyalgia pain is challenging. Fibro pain moves throughout various points of the body. It’s not specifically in your joints. Or your muscles. It’s widespread and goes where it pleases.

What causes fibromyalgia?

It’s theorized that fibromyalgia, in layman’s terms, is caused by the brain misinterpreting signals from our body. So when we are particularly stressed, or in fear of a negative or painful outcome (whether physical or emotional,) our brains react to that stress or fear by sending out pain signals to various parts of our body. This is why, the majority (if not all) of the people who experience fibromyalgia pain, have experienced either a physical or emotional trauma at some point in their lives. The prior (or ongoing) abuse changes the way our brain handles stress and pain. (Source.)

This is also why, reducing stress and practicing meditation, can help fibromyalgia pain. And why, when we get upset, our pain increases. It’s also why the practices you learn through alternative treatments, such as the Curable app, can help reduce that pain. The methods primarily focus on retraining how your brain thinks and handles stress. It’s also why some fibromyalgia sufferers find relief with SSRI drugs. SSRI’s are able to reduce our stress and anxiety chemically. For others, however, an infection or an illness can also lead to the development of fibromyalgia.

Fibro is not well understood and many doctors are still uncertain about how to treat it. However, short and even long term use of synthetic opioid pain relievers, such as Tramadol, are both addictive and cause worsening severity of pain over time. I’ve found, personally, that pain killers absolutely do lead to increased sensitivity to pain. Therefore, when I stopped taking pain killers and instead focused on natural supplements that targeted inflammation, anxiety and healthy stress response, my pain actually decreased.

How does CBD oil benefit the body?

This is what led me to explore adaptogens. Like adaptogenic herbs such as ashwagandha, maca and holy basil, CBD oil is also an adaptogen. Or, basically, a non-specific remedy that increases our bodies resistance to a broad spectrum of harmful factors of different physical, chemical and biological natures.

CBD oil works because it interacts with our bodies through the endogenous cannabinoid system (ECS) or endocannabinoid system. Discovered in the 1980’s, the endocannabinoid system regulates the body’s general state of balance. It has a positive impact on mood, sleep, appetite and hormone regulation as well as our bodies pain and immune response. As such, the endocannabinoid system is an extremely important regulator within our bodies. However, few of us take steps to support this system as cannabinoids are not a part of our normal daily diet. (Learn more about the endocannabinoid system.)

In addition to its benefit as an herbal supplement, CBD oil also has numerous medical indications including anxiety, epilepsy, inflammation, cancer and chronic pain. And it’s not just for people either. All mammals, including dogs and cats, benefit in the same way we do. My 9 1/2 year old dachshund has been able to jump onto the couch again despite arthritis in his front knees since taking MediPets CBD Oil. How much CBD oil do I need?

I’ve found that taking a daily CBD oil supplement at a lower dose works best for long term maintenance of my fibromyalgia. It helps with anxiety, stress and insomnia. However, when I have a pain flare up, that maintenance dosage isn’t enough to bring my pain level back down. Therefore, for flare ups, I have typically take between a 50 mg to 100 mg serving twice a day until the pain dissipates.

The packaging of your CBD oil should indicate on the back how many mg are in a serving. Most oils offer between 6 mg and 35 mg per serving. The amount of CBD oil per serving is also indicative of how much more you’ll pay for your CBD oil.

If you can’t find the amount of CBD oil per serving on your packaging, you can determine the amount yourself. For example, if a 30 ml bottle of CBD oil contains 700 mg of CBD oil, simply divide the total amount of CBD in mg by the number of ml of oil in the bottle. Therefore, 700mg divided 30ml equals 24 mg per 1 ml dose, or one dropper full. While CBD 1500 mg will have 50 mg of CBD per 1 ml serving.

How you will react to CBD oil varies. It is different for everyone. Factors such as age, sex, weight and diet all determine how CBD oil influences your body. As does the way in which CBD oil is administered. Women tend to experience more pain relief from CBD oil than men. And applying CBD oil under your tongue versus consuming it by way of an edible product changes the time frame in which your body processes and reacts to it. However, for most people, you’ll notice the full effects of your CBD oil dosage about 45 minutes to an hour after consumption.

CBD Natural Pain Relief Salve Recipe

Ingredients:

.25 oz. neem oil
.25 oz. andiroba oil (or arnica herbal oil)
.25 oz. Diamond CBD Full Spectrum MCT Oil (in strength of choice)
.25 oz. white cosmetic beeswax
12 drops rosemary essential oil

Instructions:

You will need a digital scale to weigh out the ingredients for this CBD natural pain relief salve recipe.

Weigh out and combine the beeswax, neem oil and andiroba oil in a small glass Pyrex measuring cup or similar. Slowly heat over low using the double boiler method.

Once all of the beeswax has melted, remove from heat. Then weigh out and stir in the CBD oil. Using a dropper or graduated plastic transfer pipette, add 12 drops of rosemary essential oil.

Mix again, then pour into two .5 oz. containers of your choice. I used two 1/2 oz. white polypropylene double wall radius jars for my CBD natural pain relief salve recipe. (You can find these containers at SKS Bottle & Packaging here.)

Once your CBD natural pain relief salve cools, screw the lids onto the jars and label as desired for personal use or gifting. (I used labels with a fake company name simply for demonstration purposes.)

To use, simply massage onto areas of pain as desired.

Halloween Isn’t Just for Kids!

Adulting sucks. At the same time, it’s can also be pretty amazing. As adults, we can steal our kid’s stash of Halloween candy and it’s somehow justified. Bully for us. Inside My Halloween Solid Lotion Bar Recipe

These easy Halloween solid lotion bars are not only cute, they’re also super practical. If you have dry hands in the winter, then you know how important it is to have a quality hand cream on hand 24/7. (Especially if you’re washing your hands 20x a day to fend off those monstrous cold & flu germs.) These lotion bars are perfect for moisturizing and protecting your dry skin.

They don’t stop there, however. I also scented my Halloween solid lotion bars with a calming blend of cedarwood and lavender essential oils. So you can keep calm and carry on no what your work day throws at you.

As with some of my more recent skin care recipes, my Halloween solid lotion bar recipe utilizes bacuri butter as one of three primary ingredients. This is what will give your Halloween shaped lotion bars their dark color. Additionally, it also ensures a fast absorption rate. After all, no one wants greasy fingerprints on their keyboard.

I’ve also included beeswax to solidify the bar and to protect skin. While buriti oil – a carrier oil rich in fatty acids as well as vitamins C, E and pro-vitamin A – helps to rebuild, moisturize and hydrate skin cells. Additionally, buriti oil also helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, promotes healing (bye-bye cracked knuckles!) and protects skin from free radicals while also increasing skin’s elasticity.

The glitter? Well, that’s just the icing on the cake. I used eco-friendly, biodegradable cosmetic glitter so it’s safe for the environment. You can choose to add just a dash of glitter to the tops of your lotion bars. Or, include glitter in the melted ingredients when you make my Halloween solid bar lotion recipe for an easy way to add some sparkle to your skin. (Don’t worry! While the color of this lotion bar is brown, it goes on clear!)

Halloween Solid Lotion Bar Recipe

Ingredients:

2 oz. bacuri butter
2 oz. beeswax pastilles
2.25 oz. buriti oil
.15 oz. cedarwood essential oil
.1 oz. lavender essential oil
biodegradable glitter, to suit

Instructions:

As with the majority of my skin care recipes, you will need a digital scale to weigh out the ingredients. In addition, you will also need a Halloween silicone mold of your choice. (I used this one.) My Halloween solid lotion bar recipe made four lotion bars – one each of a pumpkin, a bat, a skull and a ghost.

Begin by weighing out the bacuri butter, beeswax and buriti oil. Combine in a heat proof Pyrex measuring cup or similar. Gently heat until the beeswax and bacuri butter have melted using either the double boiler method or in your microwave at 30% power.

Once melted, remove from heat. Then weigh out the essential oils and stir into the lotion bar ingredients you just melted.

Next, lightly dust the inside of your mold with bio-glitter. (I used this purple fuschia glitter.) If desired, you can also stir some glitter into your melted ingredients. (You’ll just need to wait a little longer before pouring to allow the lotion to hit that point just before it starts to solidify, then stir again prior to pouring into your mold. Otherwise all of the glitter just sinks the bottom.)

Now pour your ingredients into your mold. (I recommend placing your mold on a cutting board prior to pouring. This way, you can easily transfer your mold to the refrigerator for faster cooling times.)

Once your Halloween solid lotion bars have fully solidified, pop them out of the mold then package as desired. These look great in glassine bags or in PET plastic amber jars. I used a 4 oz. amber jar from SKS Bottle & Packaging for the small pumpkin and sugar skull solid bars. The bat, however, needed the 8 oz. sized jar

I  then added Halloween stickers to the lids of my containers to decorate them. Although, washi tape would be super cute too! You could use it either on the lid or around the diameter of the jar. I also thought about making an emulsified sugar scrub or foaming bath butter, filling the jar with it, then nestling a solid lotion bar on top. Tell me what you think!
