Adapted by my friend, Bambi, from the giant ginger cookies recipe found in Better Homes and Gardens Test Kitchen Favorites, this molasses cookies recipe does it right with extra spices to warm your stomach and heart.

Homemade Molasses Cookies Recipe

Yields about 24 molasses cookies.

Ingredients:

2 1/4 cups all purpose flour
4 teaspoons ground ginger
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground cloves
1/8 teaspoon sea salt
3/4 cup butter flavored shortening
3/4 cup white granulated sugar
1 1/4 cup brown sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 egg
1/4 cup blackstrap molasses
2 tablespoons regular or coarse sugar

Directions:

Combine the flour, ginger, baking soda, cinnamon, cloves and salt in a medium bowl. Set aside.

In large mixing bowl beat the shortening with an electric mixer on low for 30 seconds. Then slowly add 3/4 cup granulated sugar and the brown sugar, beating until fluffy. Add the egg, vanilla extract and molasses and beat well. Then stir the flour mixture into the egg mixture.

Shape the molasses cookie dough into 1 1/2-inch balls using a heaping tablespoon of dough for each ball. Then roll the balls in the two tablespoons of sugar and place onto ungreased cookie sheets about 2 1/2 inches apart.

Bake at 350°F in a preheated oven for about 10 minutes, taking care not to overbake. (They should still be puffed after baking.) Then let stand on the cookie sheets for 2 minutes before transferring to a wire rack. Allow to cool.

Last summer I made a wonderful plantain herbal oil infusion with dried wild harvested plantain leaves and olive oil. As I still had some of my plantain infused olive oil leftover from my last project for vegan solid lotion bars, I decided to put the rest of it to good use!

What’s the Story with Plantain?

Plantain is often times considered a weed. However, in actuality, this plant is a powerful medicinal herb with strong anti-inflammatory, analgesic and anti-microbial properties. As such plantain is commonly used as a topical home remedy to promote healing, soothe insect bites and reduce the appearance of scars. You can learn more about plantain here

My homemade plantain soap recipe produces a low cleansing, super nourishing soap with a wonderful lather that your entire family will love. Made with a few fun ingredients like date sugar and French green clay, this palm free soap is formulated specifically for dry skin and scented with frankincense essential oil.

You will need to make your own plantain infused olive oil for this plantain soap recipe. If you aren’t able to harvest wild plantain in your area, you can purchase plantain leaves online. Alternately you can also purchase solar infused plantain herbal oil. I highly recommend shopping with Mountain Rose Herbs for quality organic options.

How to Make Herbal Infused Oils using both the solar infusion method and the quick method for heat infusing oils via Mountain Rose Herbs. Plus a fantastic palm free, natural plantain soap recipe made with plantain infused olive oil that's perfect for dry skin!

How to Make Plantain Infused Olive Oil

To make your plantain infused olive oil, you’ll first need to harvest and dry your plantain leaves. Once dry, fill a small mason jar three-fourths of the way full with plantain leaves. Then cover the leaves with olive oil. You want the oil to come about an inch higher than the plantain leaves. (You can use either pomace olive oil or virgin olive oil for this plantain soap recipe.)

Now place the mason jar in a sunny window for 2-3 weeks. You’ll also want to shake the herbal infusion at least once a day. After 2-3 weeks have passed, use cheesecloth or a mesh strainer to drain the oil from the plantain leaves. Natural Plantain Soap Recipe

Ingredients:

6.4 oz. plantain infused olive oil (40%)
.8 oz. castor oil (5%)
4 oz. refined coconut oil (25%)
.8 oz. refined shea butter (5%)
4 oz. safflower oil (25%)

4.8 fl. oz. distilled water
2.2 oz. lye/sodium hydroxide

1 Tablespoon French green clay
2 Tablespoons natural date sugar
.25 oz. frankincense essential oil

Instructions:

Before you begin, you’ll need to make sure you take all necessary safety precautions when working with lye. This includes wearing eye protection and gloves as well as ensuring none of your containers or utensils are made from aluminum.

You will follow my cold process soapmaking tutorial in order to make this soap. (If you’ve never made homemade soap, I recommend starting with a beginner’s soap recipe which you can find here.)

My plantain soap recipe has a 30.5% water discount and 6% superfat. It will yield six homemade soap bars when using this rectangle silicone mold.

Begin my measuring out the distilled water in fluid ounces into a heat safe container. Then using a digital scale (I recommend this Bakers Math Scale) weigh out the lye. Slowly pour the lye into the water and stir until it has completely dissolved. Set aside to cool.

Next, weigh out the soapmaking oils and combine in a stainless steel pot or heat safe container. Heat on the stove top or at reduced power in a microwave or crock pot until melted. Remove from heat, then set aside to cool.

Once the lye-water and soapmaking oils reach about 90°-95°F, you’re ready to make soap!

Measure out the French green clay and date sugar, then mix them into the soapmaking oils using an immersion or stick blender.

Then slowly pour the lye-water into the soapmaking oils and mix with your stick blender until you reach a light trace.

Weigh out the frankincense essential oil and add to the soap batter. Then continue mixing to fully incorporate the scent. Once you reach a medium to heavy trace, pour the soap batter into your soap mold.

Cover the mold with plastic cling wrap if desired, then set aside in a safe location where it won’t be disturbed.

Your plantain soaps should be ready to unmold 24-48 hours later.

Once you’ve unmolded your homemade soaps, set them aside in a cool location for a minimum of four weeks to cure. These soaps do smell a little funky at first, but after curing the scent of the frankincense does come back out in the soap.

Now all that’s left is to wrap and label as desired for personal use or gifting.

Best Pork Tenderloin Rub Recipe

For a 1 – 1 1/2 lb. boneless pork loin roast

Ingredients:

1 teaspoon fine sea salt
1 teaspoon ground black peppercorn
1 teaspoon apple pie spice
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder

Directions:

Using measure spoons, measure out the ingredients and combine a small glass bowl. Mix well to ensure all of the spices for this best pork tenderloin rub recipe are evenly distributed throughout the mixture. Then rub the seasoning on all sides of the pork.

Bring it Together for a Meal!

For our dinner, Bambi added the pork to the crockpot with an 18 oz. French onion soup, 1/2 cup of chunky applesauce along with a small (peeled and chopped) butternut squash.

She cooked it on low for about five hours then served the pork with steamed brussel sprouts and pasta! It was SO good. And there were zero leftovers!

This would also be great with green beans or asparagus and potatoes or quinoa or brown rice.

This app basically walks you through a series of articles and exercises, including meditation, with the idea that many of those suffering from chronic pain (such a fibromyalgia and migraines) are incorrectly receiving pain signals to their brain based on previous traumatic experiences – basically a pain response to fear, not an illness.

This theory in fact would explain why many chronic pain sufferers find that during periods of stress, their pain level increases. What Curable does is address pain through a mindbody approach and uses a combination of physical activities, meditation, writing and other exercises to address the pain response to fear. This works to then rewire how the brain thinks and can result in a drastic decrease in chronic daily pain.

Based on my own personal experiences with fibromyalgia, I’ve found that yes, the onset and even the intensity of my own pain can and does flare with stress. And practices such as meditation and other exercises to calm both my mind and body really can help to diminish that pain. Avoiding stress is another way.

Of course, as we all know, life happens. And avoiding stress isn’t always possible no matter how well we’ve trained our minds. This is where making Epsom salt bath bombs comes in! (Yay!)

Not only can creating something with your hands help to relieve everyday stressors (and it’s even more fun with a friend in tow.) But a long bath soaking in Epsom salts is a form of meditation in itself. Not to mention, just a twenty minute bath in Epsom salts will remove toxins and replenish magnesium levels – which are key in regulating and organizing many bodily functions as well as reducing pain levels and response.

Making Epsom salt bath bombs is a fun way to enjoy the benefits of Epsom salts. And because dry skin is typical of this time of year, I added some extra moisturizing butters to the recipe I’m sharing with you! (And just to ensure there’s no extra stress in the making of these darn things, I promise these are practically no fail!)

Epsom Salt Bath Bombs Recipe for Chronic Pain! This Epsom salt bath bombs recipe is an easy and natural way to flush toxins from your body, reduce stress and ease muscle aches and pains. And, because an Epsom salt bath also helps to increase the body's magnesium levels, you don't have to be in pain to reap the benefits of this amazing salt. #epsomsalt #bathbombs #diy #chronicpain #health #wellness #painremedy

Epsom Salt Bath Bombs Recipe

Ingredients:

10 oz. citric acid
16 oz. baking soda
8 oz. Epsom salt
2 oz. French green clay
2 oz. refined shea butter
2 oz. cocoa butter
.7 oz. sweet orange essential oil
.3 oz. peppermint essential oil

Instructions:

Using a digital scale, weigh out the dry ingredients and combine in a large glass bowl or 8-cup Pyrex measuring cup. Mix together until all of the ingredients are evenly distributed throughout. Set aside.

In a separate glass bowl or large container, weigh out and combine the cocoa and shea butters. Heat either in a double boiler or at 30% power in the microwave until melted. Once melted, remove from heat.

Now weigh and add the essential oils to the melted butters. Stir to incorporate.

Next, combine the dry and the liquid ingredients together, mixing well until all of the dry ingredients are coated and the consistency is like that of wet sand.

You’re now ready to pack your bath bomb molds!

To do this, pile each side of your bath bomb mold individually as high as possible without pressing the bath bomb ingredients into either side of the mold. Then, quickly and firmly press both sides of the bath bomb mold together. Twist gently to remove any excess. Some extra around the edges (like rings of a planet) are normal. Don’t twist too much or knock the sides off center of one another or the two halves will separate when unmolded.

Repeat with additional molds as needed until you’ve used all of the bath bomb mixture. (I was able to make four tennis ball shaped bath bombs and one golf ball shaped bath bomb with my Epsom salt bath bombs recipe.)

Set your Epsom salt bath bombs aside to dry overnight or up to two days depending on the humidity in your area. Then gently unmold each bath bomb, dusting off the excess around the bath bombs as needed. (This Epsom salt bath bomb recipe will work with silicone molds as well!)

Now simply wrap each of your Epsom salt bath bombs tightly in foodservice film until ready for use.

To use your Epsom salt bath bombs, simply drop a bath bomb into warm, running bath water. Enjoy the show, then slip in and relax! The shea and cocoa butters present in your new bath bombs will replenish moisture to dry skin, while the Epsom salt lends its own natural skin care benefits.
