As someone with sensitive skin I understand how challenging it can be to find products that not only work for your skin but also don’t cause irritation. Therefore I developed a simple vegan face wash recipe for sensitive skin. Not only does it gently cleanse skin without stripping it of beneficial oils, but it’s also effective at removing makeup and deterring adult acne.

I crafted my unscented vegan face wash recipe using Stephenson’s mild foaming bath butter for it’s gentle cleansing properties and creamy texture. Rich in natural glycerin, this base is also both paraben and MPG free.

I then added skin soothing colloidal oatmeal, oat butter and French green clay to this base to calm inflammation. In addition, I also used rosehip seed oil to hydrate skin and target aging without clogging pores. Jojoba beads and cranberry seeds are then used to offer gentle exfoliation.

Vegan Face Wash Recipe

Ingredients:

8 oz. Stephenson Foaming Bath Butter Base
1 oz. medium 40/60 white jojoba beads
.75 oz. oat butter (or another hydrogenated butter)
.25 oz. rosehip seed oil
.2 oz. French green clay
.2 oz. colloidal oatmeal
.15 oz cranberry seeds

Instructions:

You will need a digital scale to weigh out the ingredients for my vegan face wash recipe. In addition you will also need a hand mixer.

Begin by weighing out 8 oz. of foaming bath butter. Cut into chunks and place in a large glass bowl or 8-cup Pyrex measuring cup.

Next, weigh out and add the remaining ingredients to your container.

Starting with the lowest setting, use a hand mixer to mix the ingredients until combined with the foaming bath butter.

Once mixed, increase the speed of your hand mixer to high and beat until light and fluffy or to desired consistency.

Spoon the vegan face wash into your containers of choice. (I used these 2.3 oz. clear glass thick wall cosmetic jars with black lined caps from from SKS Bottle & Packaging here.)

Then screw on the lids and label your jars of vegan face wash as desired for gifting or personal use. I decorated my jars using washi tape and scrapbooking supplies.

Homemade Moisturizing Facial Toner

Skin care can be complicated especially when you have no idea what your skin is doing. Combination skin, especially, can be confusing. And, as you age, maturing skin does all kinds of craziness too.

Because I have maturing, combination skin prone to hormonal breakouts, I needed a good toner that would tackle dryness, balance my oily t-zone and help prevent acne. All without drying out my skin in the process. So I came up with this homemade moisturizing facial toner recipe to do just that!

My homemade moisturizing facial toner recipe contains several key ingredients to get the job done and get it done right! It’s made with rooibos tea, unfiltered apple cider vinegar, calendula hydrosol, jojoba oil, a blend of natural essential oils and witch hazel extract. (I specifically used the witch hazel extract from Mountain Rose Herbs as it’s double distilled and only contains 14% alcohol for a more soothing product without the sting of store bought witch hazel.)

Why Rooibos Tea?

It’s been shown in studies that rooibos tea is able to sooth and help diminish a variety of skin conditions including eczema and acne when applied topically. In addition, as it is rich in superoxide dismutase – an enzyme necessary for the production of healthy skin cells – rooibos tea has also been found effective in fighting the appearance of aging.

Rooibos tea is also hypoallergenic, meaning it won’t irritate sensitive skin. And because it has natural antibacterial properties, applying rooibos tea to skin can both help to fight acne as well as aid in alleviating bacterial skin infections.

Homemade Moisturizing Facial Toner Recipe

(with Rooibos Tea & Manuka Essential Oil)

Ingredients:

2 oz. brewed rooibos tea
1 oz. witch hazel extract
1 oz. Bragg’s unfiltered apple cider vinegar
1 oz. calendula hydrosol
12 mL polysorbate 80
2 mL jojoba oil
1 mL manuka essential oil
1 mL lavender essential oil
1 mL lemongrass essential oil
8 drops tea tree essential oil

Instructions:

You’ll begin by brewing the rooibos tea for this recipe. To do so, place one teaspoon of rooibos tea into a disposable tea filter then pour 4 oz. of boiling filtered (or distilled) water over the tea bag. Allow to steep for five minutes, remove the tea bag, then cool the tea to room temperature.

Once the rooibos tea has cooled, measure out the rooibos tea, witch hazel extract, apple cider vinegar and calendula hydrosol and pour into a medium glass bowl.

Then, using a fresh graduated transfer pipette for each remaining ingredient, measure out and add the jojoba oil, polysorbate 80, and the essential oils. The polysorbate will cause a gel like mass in the bowl.

Simply mix well with a whisk to dissolve the gel. Keep whisking until your homemade moisturizing facial toner is once again liquid.

Now divide your homemade moisturizing facial toner between two 2 oz. amber PET Boston round bottles with a smooth black fine mist sprayer. Then label as desired for personal use. (You can find the same bottles with sprayers that I used at SKS Bottle & Packaging.)

If desired or for long term storage, I recommend also adding a preservative such as Phenoxyethanol to your homemade moisturizing facial toner once you’ve mixed all of the ingredients together and prior to pouring into your containers.

To use, spritz onto face after cleansing and gently massage into skin. Follow with a facial serum or your favorite moisturizer or day cream. Tamanu oil specifically possesses a variety of properties useful in skin care applications. It is a powerful anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antifungal, antibacterial and analgesic carrier oil. Additionally tamanu oil is also rich in antioxidants and is a wonderful moisturizer.

Because of this, tamanu oil has been traditionally used as a natural home remedy to promote the healing of minor wounds and abrasions, insect bites and sunburns. It’s also beneficial in relieving bothersome skin conditions such as acne, psoriasis, dry or scaly skin, and eczema.

Oat Body Scrub Recipe! This foaming oat body scrub recipe is handmade with skin soothing oat butter, tamanu oil and frankincense essential oil. This body scrub is perfect for those who prefer a product that rinses away completely after use rather than leaving beneficial oils behind. This makes it a great body scrub option for summer when skin tends to sweat and produce more oils.

Foaming Oat Body Scrub Recipe

Ingredients:

11 oz.Crafter’s Choice foaming bath whip (or similar)
4 oz. oat butter (or another hydrogenated butter)
.5 oz. tamanu oil
.5 oz. cocoa butter
.3 oz. emulsifying wax
.2 oz. frankincense essential oil
20 oz. granulated white sugar

Instructions:

You will need a digital scale to weigh all of the ingredients for my foaming oat body scrub recipe.

Being by weighing out the cocoa butter and emulsifying wax. Combine in a large 8 cup glass Pyrex measuring cup or glass bowl. Heat the wax and cocoa butter in the microwave at 40% power until melted. Alternately you may also use a double boiler.

Remove the melted ingredients from heat then weigh out the oat butter. Stir the oat butter into the melted ingredients until it has fully melted.

Follow with the foaming bath whip, then mix with a power hand blender for about 2 minutes.

Both frankincense and tamanu oil are purported to have anti-aging skin care properties and are therefore used in a variety of products that help to diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Weigh out the frankincense essential oil and mix into the ingredients using a hand blender.

Once all of the wet ingredients are thoroughly combined you can add the sugar.

Slowly add the sugar mixing with a hand blender until all of the sugar is evenly distributed throughout. When the sugar is well incorporated into your oat body scrub, you are ready to pour the scrub into containers.

Evenly fill three 9 oz. clear straight sided glass jars with silver metal lug caps with your foaming oat body scrub. (I got my containers from SKS Bottle & Packaging here.)

About the ingredients.

Matcha green tea is rich in antioxidants that are beneficial in supporting skin health. It can help to reduce inflammation as well as free radicals that accelerate skin aging.

Like matcha green tea, camellia (tea seed) oil also contains valuable antioxidants. Not only does it help to moisturize skin, but camellia (tea seed) oil can also help to improve skin’s tone and texture as well as reduce the appearance of aging.

I’ve also included oat butter in my matcha green tea butter bars recipe for it’s hydrating and soothing skin care properties. Somewhat softer than shea butter, oat butter makes a wonderful addition to homemade skin care products formulated for sensitive skin.

Matcha Green Tea Butter Bars Recipe

Ingredients:

.75 oz. candelilla wax
.5 oz. cera bellina wax
2 oz. oat butter
2 oz. camellia (tea seed) oil
.05 oz. matcha green tea
.15 oz. green tea fragrance oil

Notes & Substitutions:

My matcha green tea butter bars recipe calls for cera bellina wax. Cera bellina wax is a beeswax derivative in which the free fatty acids have been converted to polyglycerol esters. As a result, cera bellina softer is softer than regular beeswax. It also adds a smooth, creamy texture to lotions and lip balms. When added to oils it will cause them to gel.

Recommended usage for cera bellina wax is up to 20% in lotions and lip balms and up to 29% in oils for an oil emulsion. If you’d like to learn more about cera bellina wax, Humblebee & Me blog has a wonderful guide to this unique ingredient here.

If you do not want to use cera bellina wax, you can substitute this wax with regular beeswax. Alternately, if you’d like a plant-based vegan matcha green tea butter bar, you can omit the cera bellina wax entirely and use 1 oz. of candelilla wax instead.

Should you not have or do not wish to use oat butter, you may substitute this ingredient with another hydrogenated butter. Alternately you can also substitute the oat butter with refined shea butter.

Camellia (tea seed) oil can be swapped out with fractionated coconut oil and, should you desire all natural matcha green tea butter bars, you can substitute the fragrance oil with .05 oz. essential oil of your choice.

It is, however, important to note that while making substitutions will still a yield a similar solid lotion bar as my matcha green tea butter bars recipe, the final properties and feel of the end product may differ.

Finally, I specifically used the matcha green tea from Adagio Teas for this recipe. Instructions:

Using a digital scale, begin by weighing out the candelilla wax and cera bellina wax into a small glass Pyrex measuring cup. Heat the waxes in the microwave at 40% power until melted. (Alternately you can also use a double boiler.)

Once melted, remove the waxes from your heat source. Weigh out the oat butter and stir into the melted waxes until it liquifies.

Next, weigh out the camellia oil and stir into the previously melted ingredients. Follow with the matcha green tea and the fragrance oil, weighing each ingredient first to get the right amount.

Mix well to fully incorporate all of the ingredients and to remove any clumps of matcha green tea. Then pour into your mold of choice.

I used a square silicone ice cube tray for my mold and evenly filled five of the six mold cavities about 1/3rd of the way full.

Once your matcha green tea butter bars have fully hardened, remove them from the mold. Then wrap your matcha green tea butter bars tightly in foodservice film.

If desired, you can also decorate your matcha green tea butter bars with washi tape.

Inspired by Nourish Organic’s Rejuvenating Rose Butter, my rose body butter recipe contains refined shea butter and coconut oil, rosehip seed and sunflower oil, and natural rose kaolin clay. I also added a touch of frankincense essential oil for a light scent and for frankincense’s valuable astringent properties when used in skin care applications.

Because frankincense can help to protect skin cells, it’s useful in preventing acne blemishes, the appearance of large pores, and wrinkles. It’s also believed to help lift and tighten skin which can deter the signs of aging.

And, as if that wasn’t enough, my rose body butter recipe also absorbs quickly so you can get on with your day without leaving oily marks everywhere you go!

Which frankincense essential oil should I use?

There are four main types of frankincense. They are Boswellia Serrata, Boswellia FrereanaBoswellia Carteri and Boswellia Papyrifera. For this application, I’ll be discussing the differences between Boswellia Serrata, Boswellia Frereana, and Boswellia Carteri essential oils.

Frankincense (Boswellia Serrata) essential oil is the oldest documented Frankincense and is believed to have been used in both Ayurvedic medicine and as the frankincense mentioned in the Bible. It contains high amounts of alpha thujene, alpha pinene, and limonene which give it strong antiseptic, decongestant, and anti-inflammatory properties. It has a sweeter and more delicate fragrance than the other frankincense varieties with top terpenic-pine notes and costs less as it yields a higher amount of essential oil.

Frankincense (Boswellia Frereana) essential oil, which is grown at a higher altitude, contains high amounts pinene, thujene, and cymene. These natural constituents yield strong anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antispasmodic, and analgesic (pain relieving) properties making it especially suitable for inflammation caused by arthritis, swelling, and allergies. This type of frankincense has strong citrus-lemon top notes with an earthy, resinous heart.

And finally, Frankincense (Boswellia Carteri) essential oil is the most well known of all the frankincense varieties. It has the smooth, richa aroma that people are most familiar with when they think of frankincense. Frankincense (Boswellia Carteri) essential oil contains high concentrations of alpha pinene, and other monoterpenes making it useful both in skin care and aromatherapy applications. When used in skin care applications it can help to diminish the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and scars. When inhaled it is particularly beneficial at fighting the effects from acute colds and asthma.

I used Frankincense (Boswellia Serrata) essential oil for my rose body butter recipe, however, you can use whichever frankincense essential oil you prefer for this application.

Natural Rose Body Butter Recipe

Ingredients:

3 oz. refined shea butter
.5 oz. refined coconut oil
.25 oz. rosehip seed oil
.25 oz. sunflower or sweet almond oil
.1 oz. arrowroot powder
.05 oz. rose kaolin clay
2 mL frankincense essential oil (of choice)
3-5 drops vitamin E oil

Instructions:

You will need a digital scale to weigh out the all of the ingredients for my rose body butter recipe except for the frankincense essential oil and the vitamin E oil. For the frankincense essential oil you’ll need to measure out the amount called for in the recipe with a graduated plastic transfer pipette.

Begin by weighing out the shea butter and coconut oil. Combine in a glass Pyrex measuring cup or similar and heat in the microwave at 50% power until melted. Alternately, you can also use a double boiler.

Now weigh out the arrowroot powder and whisk into the melted shea butter and coconut oil.

Next, weigh the rosehip seed and sunflower oils and stir into the body butter mixture.

Add a few drops of Vitamin E followed by the frankincense essential oil.

Finally, weigh out and add the rose kaolin clay.

Mix well, then set the body butter in the refrigerator briefly. As the clay will want to sink to the bottom, you’ll need to cool the body butter down in order to evenly distribute the clay.

Once the body butter starts to thicken, remove it from the refrigerator and remix until the clay stays evenly distributed throughout the body butter and no longer sinks to the bottom.

Pour the body butter evenly into two 2 oz. straight sided amber glass jars with black phenolic lined caps. (I got mine from SKS Bottle & Packaging here.)

Once your natural rose body butter has completely solidified, screw on the caps and label as desired for personal use or gifting. You can find free printable labels for my natural rose body butter recipe here. Simply print the PDF onto a full size sticker or label sheet and cut out the labels.

To use, simply massage a small amount of the body butter onto your skin as desired and wait for it to absorb completely. I personally love this on my hands!

Substitutions?

If you are allergic to coconut oil then you may substitute the coconut oil with babassu oil. Babassu oil is very similar to coconut oil with just a slightly higher melting point. (Learn more about babassu oil here.)

It is also important to note that my rose body butter recipe yields a very soft body butter. If you live in a particularly warm climate in which coconut oil will not stay solidified for you, then I suggest adding a small amount of emulsifying wax to this recipe. I’d start with around .25 oz.

If you actually want your rose body butter to smell like roses, substitute the frankincense essential oil with 1 mL of rose absolute.
