The Correlation Between Aging and Self Esteem

I’ve always looked much younger than my age. When I gave birth to my son at 21 it was assumed by strangers that I was a teenage mother. And back when I would sell handmade soaps at the local farmer’s market the other market vendors used to joke that my soap kept me young. I, of course, joked back that alcohol was a preservative. But either way, neither were true.

A lot of how we age comes from our genetics. My mother, a spirited ginger, has always looked at least a decade younger than she really is. She’s also avoided cigarettes and drinking her entire life, her vice being her love of potatoes.

Aging is a tricky thing. Not everyone ages at the same rate. Sun exposure and lifestyle can also influence aging. But regardless of both genetics and lifestyle choices no one escapes the ravages of time.

While others don’t always notice the subtle changes happening to our own bodies, we are with ourselves everyday. So we catch those subtle nuances. The scars we’ve compiled over the years. Quickly duplicating laugh lines. The mysterious age spots that we still swear are freckles. (Prove they aren’t!) That slow emergence of a double chin. Skin tags in troubling places. In fact I found a new skin tag under my arm just yesterday!

No one wants to age. Not really. And watching it in slow motion from month to month and year to year can be a hard pill to swallow. It’s no wonder that women (and men!) in their forties still struggle with self esteem issues. I certainly do. And when you compile unwanted changes to your body with weight gain, failed relationships, money issues, problems at work – some days you may not even recognize who you’ve become.

While my self esteem has definitely taken a tumble lately, I’ve been seriously trying to come with terms with this aging thing. Not to mention that every year I look more and more like my mother did when she was my age. (Don’t you just hate that?) I’m hoping that as I work through peri-menopause in my forties I also learn how to love my wrinkles. At the same time, is that really even possible?

The global anti-aging market is expected to make $331.41 billion by 2021. (Source.) These anti-aging products currently target Baby Boomers, Generation X and Generation Y, with Baby Boomers and Gen-exers being the most cost effective market. We are spending an insane amount of money on anti-aging products as a result of our insecurities and faltering body image.

Products like UV absorbers, anti-stretch mark products, anti-wrinkle creams and hair color, not to mention anti-pigmentation therapy, liposuction services, chemical peels, and hair restoration consume a large portion of our disposable income. And the more we age, the more we’re willing to spend to fight it.

I admit, I am guilty AF at making these types of purchases. And while they are certainly a frivolous expense for any lower income household, Americans alone are spending over $11 billion a year on plastic surgery, dermatology, and cosmetology treatments in order to look younger.

Anti-Aging Skin Care Products I Can’t Live Without

My go to anti-aging products include a microdermabrasion scrub, a retinol serum (which has helped considerably with scarring from multiple dog bites) and a hyaluronic acid cream.

Because these products are so expensive, I often look for ways to save money on them. This includes, at times, making my own natural anti-aging products. Not only is it more cost effective over the course of a year to make my own DIY anti-aging beauty products, it also allows me to customize these products around my skin care needs.

I can rarely afford to buy my favorite anti-aging microdermabrasion scrub. It’s price tag is too steep for my current budget for how quickly I fly through a container. While day creams or a retinol serum may last me two months, microdermabrasion scrubs tend to be gone in two weeks in my over zealous hands. However microdermabrasion scrubs do a great job at preventing and getting rid of my skin tags and textured facial skin.

So rather than give up this product all together, I decided to create my own anti-aging microdermabrasion scrub recipe with nutrient rich sea kelp. Purchasing the ingredients for this recipe allows me to create enough containers of anti-aging microdermabrasion scrub to last the entire year. So it costs considerably less per ounce. Simply make up a fresh batch when you finish off the old one.

About the Ingredients in My Anti-Aging Microdermabrasion Scrub Recipe

Formulated using bamboo extract powder (which is naturally rich in silica) and super fine pumice powder, this anti-aging microdermabrasion scrub recipe gently exfoliates facial skin. This helps to remove dull surface cells and diminish the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and acne scars.

The addition of sea kelp then helps to moisturize maturing skin while also calming inflammation. Effective at reducing outbreaks of both rosacea and acne, sea kelp is also rich in vitamins and trace minerals. When used topically for natural skin care applications, sea kelp acts as a firming agent and helps to promote healing.

Finally, I rounded off my nutrient rich anti-aging microdermabrasion scrub recipe with the addition of cucumber seed oil and baobab oil. Both of these natural carrier oils offer anti-aging skin care benefits for maturing skin. They are equally moisturizing and both possess anti-inflammatory properties.

Cucumber seed oil in particular is rich in phytosterols, tocopherols, tocotrienols, and fatty acids. It not only hydrates and nourishes maturing skin, but also promotes the reduction of wrinkles. It’s particular soothing for anyone suffering from eczema or psoriasis and is naturally rich in vitamins C and E.

Cold pressed cucumber seed oil is commonly used in skin care applications to detox pores, lighten age spots, reduce skin redness and irritation, prevent acne and to fight off those pro-aging free radicals that can cause premature aging.

Baobab oil is also a wonderful anti-aging powerhouse. A naturally cleansing oil, this antioxidant rich carrier oil moisturizes dry or maturing skin, soothes irritation and promotes healing. It can also be used to help eliminate or reduce under eye bags, boost collagen production and reduce the appearance of scars while preserving skin elasticity.

Following you’ll find my anti-aging microdermabrasion scrub recipe. Use this natural anti-aging microdermabrasion scrub to cleanse and exfoliate your face. Then, leave it on for 5-10 minutes afterwards for a nutrient rich mask that hydrates skin and helps to prevent the recurrence of acne.

Anti-Aging Microdermabrasion Scrub Recipe (And Face Mask in One!)

© Rebecca D. Dillon

Ingredients:

.8 oz. super fine pumice stone powder
.5 oz. bamboo extract (powder)
.1 oz. sea kelp (powder)
.5 oz. cucumber seed oil
.25 oz. baobab oil

Optional Ingredients:

1/8 teaspoon vitamin C powder
12-15 drops of an essential oil or essential oil blend

Instructions:

You will need a digital scale to weigh out the ingredients for my anti-aging microdermabrasion scrub recipes. I am partial to this bakers math scale which can also be used for making homemade soaps.

Using a digital scale weigh out the pumice stone powder and bamboo extract. Combine in a medium glass bowl. If you’d like to add a fruit powder for extra vitamin C, then measure out and add 1/8 teaspoon of cosmetic grade vitamin C powder.

Thoroughly mix the dry ingredients to combine.

Next weigh out the carrier oils into a separate container. If desired, add an essential oil of your choice.

Now pour the dry ingredients into the liquid ingredients. Mix both the dry and liquid ingredients together with a fork until all the oils and powders are evenly distributed throughout.

Once done, simply rinse off the product and pat your face dry. Follow with your favorite toner, anti-aging serum and day cream.

I’m pretty sure that we can all agree that no one wants to look older after a certain age. But it’s not exactly our choice to make either. However, you can give your skin a fighting chance and help it look younger longer by using natural plant-based anti-aging products. Right now I’m using my own anti-aging rosehip face serum recipe that I created for maturing skin.

Anti-Aging Rosehip Face Serum Recipe! This simple skin care recipe requires only a few key natural plant based ingredients that work in unison to reduce the appearance of aging and help to prevent acne. It can even help to reduce the appearance of scarring!

Don’t let your skin dictate your look. Instead, conquer your skin’s unpredictability with this homemade moisturizing facial toner recipe! This homemade facial toner recipe is made with natural ingredients that help to remove excess oil and dead skin cells, while also balancing your skin’s PH levels to help prevent dryness and breakouts.

Homemade Moisturizing Facial Toner Recipe with Rooibos Tea & Manuka Essential Oil! Don't let your skin dictate your look. This homemade moisturizing facial toner recipe is made with natural ingredients that help to remove excess oil and dead skin cells, while also balancing your skin's PH levels to help prevent dryness and breakouts.

Homemade Moisturizing Facial Toner

Skin care can be complicated especially when you have no idea what your skin is doing. Combination skin, especially, can be confusing. And, as you age, maturing skin does all kinds of craziness too.

Because I have maturing, combination skin prone to hormonal breakouts, I needed a good toner that would tackle dryness, balance my oily t-zone and help prevent acne. All without drying out my skin in the process. So I came up with this homemade moisturizing facial toner recipe to do just that!

My homemade moisturizing facial toner recipe contains several key ingredients to get the job done and get it done right! It’s made with rooibos tea, unfiltered apple cider vinegar, calendula hydrosol, jojoba oil, a blend of natural essential oils and witch hazel extract. (I specifically used the witch hazel extract from Mountain Rose Herbs as it’s double distilled and only contains 14% alcohol for a more soothing product without the sting of store bought witch hazel.)

Why Rooibos Tea?

It’s been shown in studies that rooibos tea is able to sooth and help diminish a variety of skin conditions including eczema and acne when applied topically. In addition, as it is rich in superoxide dismutase – an enzyme necessary for the production of healthy skin cells – rooibos tea has also been found effective in fighting the appearance of aging.

Rooibos tea is also hypoallergenic, meaning it won’t irritate sensitive skin. And because it has natural antibacterial properties, applying rooibos tea to skin can both help to fight acne as well as aid in alleviating bacterial skin infections.

Ready to try this amazing homemade moisturizing facial toner? You can find my natural manuka & rooibos tea facial toner recipe below!

Ingredients:

2 oz. brewed rooibos tea
1 oz. witch hazel extract
1 oz. Bragg’s unfiltered apple cider vinegar
1 oz. calendula hydrosol
12 mL polysorbate 80
2 mL jojoba oil
1 mL manuka essential oil
1 mL lavender essential oil
1 mL lemongrass essential oil
8 drops tea tree essential oil

Instructions:

You’ll begin by brewing the rooibos tea for this recipe. To do so, place one teaspoon of rooibos tea into a disposable tea filter then pour 4 oz. of boiling filtered (or distilled) water over the tea bag. Allow to steep for five minutes, remove the tea bag, then cool the tea to room temperature.

Instead, conquer your skin's unpredictability with this homemade facial toner recipe! This homemade moisturizing facial toner recipe is made with natural ingredients that help to remove excess oil and dead skin cells, while also balancing your skin's PH levels to help prevent dryness and breakouts.

Once the rooibos tea has cooled, measure out the rooibos tea, witch hazel extract, apple cider vinegar and calendula hydrosol and pour into a medium glass bowl.

Then, using a fresh graduated transfer pipette for each remaining ingredient, measure out and add the jojoba oil, polysorbate 80, and the essential oils. The polysorbate will cause a gel like mass in the bowl.

Simply mix well with a whisk to dissolve the gel. Keep whisking until your homemade moisturizing facial toner is once again liquid.

This homemade moisturizing facial toner recipe is made with natural ingredients that help to remove excess oil and dead skin cells, while also balancing your skin's PH levels to help prevent dryness and breakouts.

Now divide your homemade moisturizing facial toner between two 2 oz. amber PET Boston round bottles with a smooth black fine mist sprayer. Then label as desired for personal use. (You can find the same bottles with sprayers that I used at SKS Bottle & Packaging.)

If desired or for long term storage, I recommend also adding a preservative such as Phenoxyethanol to your homemade moisturizing facial toner once you’ve mixed all of the ingredients together and prior to pouring into your containers.

To use, spritz onto face after cleansing and gently massage into skin. Follow with a facial serum or your favorite moisturizer or day cream. My DIY anti-aging under eye cream with hyaluronic acid hydrates skin, improves elasticity and helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

My DIY anti-aging under eye cream with hyaluronic acid will leave your skin feeling soft and nourished while reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Like one of my previous skin care recipes for my palmarosa lime body balm, my DIY anti-aging under eye cream is also formulated with oat butter. Oat Butter is a soothing blend of rich, silky oat oil and hydrogenated vegetable oil that yields a dense viscosity and smooth texture. It’s well suited for dry, flaky skin as well as those with skin sensitivities.

I left my DIY anti-aging under eye cream recipe unscented so as not to add any additional ingredients that may be a source of allergies for those with sensitive skin. The final product will leave your skin feeling so soft and smooth that’s it’s sure to become a favorite!

Ingredients:

3 oz. oat butter
.1 oz. macerated carrot carrier oil
.1 oz. cucumber seed carrier oil
.2 oz. rosehip seed oil
.3 oz. emulsifying wax
.1 oz. isopropyl myristate
.05 oz. xanthan gum
.05 oz. dimethicone
1/4 teaspoon pure hyaluronic acid serum powder

Instructions:

You will need a digital scale to weigh out all of the ingredients except for the hyaluronic acid powder. For that you will need a quarter teaspoon measuring spoon. I recommend this Baker’s Math Scale if you plan to make a lot of bath, body or soap recipes.

Begin by weighing out the emulsifying wax into a glass pyrex measuring cup. Heat until melted either in the microwave at 50% power or in a double boiler.

Weigh out and add the oat butter to the melted wax.

Reheat until the oat butter has melted.

Next, weigh out the xanthan gum and stir into the melted butter and wax mixture until it has dissolved.

Now weigh out the remaining carrier oils – macerated carrot, cucumber seed and rosehip seed oil – and stir into the previously heated ingredients. Mix well.

Allow the mixture to cool slightly then weigh the dimethicone and the isopropyl myristate and stir in. Follow with a measured quarter teaspoon of the pure hyaluronic acid serum powder. Mix well. Then place the DIY anti-aging under eye cream in the refrigerator to cool.

My DIY anti-aging under eye cream with hyaluronic acid hydrates skin, improves elasticity and helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Once the liquid anti-aging under eye cream just starts to turn cloudy and opaque, remove it from the refrigerator.

My DIY anti-aging under eye cream with hyaluronic acid hydrates skin, improves elasticity and helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Then, using a whisk attachment on your stick blender, whisk the cream on low until it thickens.

My DIY anti-aging under eye cream with hyaluronic acid hydrates skin, improves elasticity and helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Now use a small spatula to “spoon” your DIY anti-aging under eye cream into two 2 oz. straight sided amber glass jars with black phenolic lined caps. I got mine from SKS Bottle & Packaging here.

Finally, simply screw on your lids and label as desired for personal use or gifting!

To use apply to clean skin under your eyes daily at night or during the day under makeup!

If you plan to sell your DIY anti-aging under eye cream, you’ll need to follow FDA guidelines for labeling your product. If you’re unsure about the rules and regulations regarding labeling cosmetics, I highly recommend the book, Soap and Cosmetic Labeling: How to Follow the Rules and Regs Explained in Plain English, by Marie Gale.

Create this easy DIY anti-puff eye roller with just three simple ingredients to help calm and soothe your tired and puffy eyes and reduce under eye bags!

Create this easy DIY anti-puff eye roller with just three simple ingredients to help calm and soothe your tired and puffy eyes and reduce under eye bags!

So what causes under eye bags?

As you age you’re more likely to experience bags under your eyes. Because the tissue structures and muscles supporting your eyelids weakens, this skin may start to sag. As a result fat that is normally contained around your eye may drop into the area below your eyes.

In addition, this area may also retain fluid causing your eyes to look puffy or swollen. Typical causes of this include fluid retention due to hormone levels, salty foods or changes in the weather, lack of sleep, allergies or dermatitis. Heredity can also play a factor.

Create this easy DIY anti-puff eye roller with just three simple ingredients to help calm and soothe your tired and puffy eyes and reduce under eye bags!

How to I resolve my puffy eyes?

It’s not always easy to know exactly what is causing your under eye puffiness, so starting by taking care of yourself is key. Curb your salt intake and manage those seasonal allergies with medication.

You can also try using a neti pot, sleeping on your back, drink alcohol in moderation – and keep hydrated when you do drink! – use sunscreen, remove eye makeup before bed to prevent possible irritation, and don’t smoke. Cooling down your eye area also helps to relieve eye puffiness, and so this is where my DIY anti-puff eye roller comes in!

Made with aloe vera juice and caffeine extract, this DIY anti-puff eye roller also contains peppermint essential oil to for an instant cooling sensation. While this product won’t perform miracles in which your puffy eyes vanish forever, depending on the cause, it’s possible it can noticeably reduce your under eye bags when preventable causes are removed from the equation.

Ingredients:

6 mL aloe vera juice
3 mL water soluble caffeine extract
1 drop peppermint essential oil

Instructions:

Using two graduated plastic transfer pipettes – one for each ingredient – or reusable glass graduated transfer pipettes, measure out the aloe vera juice and water soluble caffeine extract. Combine in a 10 mL roller bottle.

Add one drop of the peppermint essential oil using a dropper or a fresh pipette. (You don’t want to use any more than one drop of peppermint essential oil as it’s pretty potent and you’re working with a delicate area of the skin!) Now pop on the roller bottle top and screw on the lid. Shake well to combine. That’s it!

Create this easy DIY anti-puff eye roller with just three simple ingredients to help calm and soothe your tired and puffy eyes and reduce under eye bags!

To use simply apply the anti-puff eye roller under each of your eyes as needed.

Keep your DIY anti-puff eye roller in the refrigerator between uses. The cold not only helps to cool and calm puffy faster, but it also keeps the aloe vera juice from going bad. You can store the aloe vera juice, once opened, in the refrigerator for up to two months.

Then print the labels on a clear full sheet label sheet suited for your printer type (inkjet or laser.) Now simply cut out the number of labels you need – these would be great as DIY bridesmaid gifts! – and adhere to your roller bottles.

Also a huge thank you to my dear friend, Bambi, who not only help me to create this project – along with several others this past week! – but also so eloquently modeled my DIY anti-puff eye roller for me! (In exchange she got to keep some of what we made AND we got to share a bottle of wine together!)

In addition to helping me to keep my creative drive up and going to hear all of the best bands in Roanoke with me, Bambi also makes and sells her own beaded jewelry in her Etsy shop, Happy Tree Frog Studios.

This healing neem butter recipe is wonderful for helping to heal minor wounds and abrasions as well as to help minimize scarring.

Bambi is also a recent breast cancer survivor. Having beaten the cancer through surgery and radiation treatments, she is now on a daily course of Tamoxifen for the next five years. And I’m thrilled to still have her around for the rest of forever. She’s also the super awesome friend that I created my natural burn relief spray and natural neem butter recipes for. (And lucky her, because she said they both worked fabulously for their intended uses!)

So, here’s my gentle SHOUT reminder to please, please, please get your yearly mammograms by age 40 or even sooner! – age 35 – if you have a history of breast cancer in your family. They caught Bambi’s cancer very early on when she went in for her first mammogram at 40 with zero suspicions by her GYN that anything was wrong when she called and scheduled the mammogram for her during her yearly visit.
