Halloween Isn’t Just for Kids!

Adulting sucks. At the same time, it’s can also be pretty amazing. As adults, we can steal our kid’s stash of Halloween candy and it’s somehow justified. Bully for us. And when else, other than Halloween, is it socially acceptable to wear the equivalent of a swimsuit for a night out on the town? (Which actually happened once. Some dude froze his butt off as Michael Phelps in nothing but speedos and goggles one year.)

Point being, just because we’re all grown up doesn’t mean we can’t still have fun. Halloween is kind of the perfect time of year for that. I can’t think of a better way to spend a holiday filled with mystery than visiting my favorite haunts with my friends.

My friends are some of the best people out there. Not only do they help me through the struggles and chaos life seems intent on throwing our way, we also share some amazing moments together. So what better way to remind your friends (and co-workers) that, they too, are an important piece of your life than with a simple handmade Halloween gift.

Inside My Halloween Solid Lotion Bar Recipe

These easy Halloween solid lotion bars are not only cute, they’re also super practical. If you have dry hands in the winter, then you know how important it is to have a quality hand cream on hand 24/7. (Especially if you’re washing your hands 20x a day to fend off those monstrous cold & flu germs.) These lotion bars are perfect for moisturizing and protecting your dry skin.

They don’t stop there, however. I also scented my Halloween solid lotion bars with a calming blend of cedarwood and lavender essential oils. So you can keep calm and carry on no what your work day throws at you.

As with some of my more recent skin care recipes, my Halloween solid lotion bar recipe utilizes bacuri butter as one of three primary ingredients. This is what will give your Halloween shaped lotion bars their dark color. Additionally, it also ensures a fast absorption rate. After all, no one wants greasy fingerprints on their keyboard.

I’ve also included beeswax to solidify the bar and to protect skin. While buriti oil – a carrier oil rich in fatty acids as well as vitamins C, E and pro-vitamin A – helps to rebuild, moisturize and hydrate skin cells. Additionally, buriti oil also helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, promotes healing (bye-bye cracked knuckles!) and protects skin from free radicals while also increasing skin’s elasticity.

The glitter? Well, that’s just the icing on the cake. I used eco-friendly, biodegradable cosmetic glitter so it’s safe for the environment. You can choose to add just a dash of glitter to the tops of your lotion bars. Or, include glitter in the melted ingredients when you make my Halloween solid bar lotion recipe for an easy way to add some sparkle to your skin. (Don’t worry! While the color of this lotion bar is brown, it goes on clear!)

Ingredients:

2 oz. bacuri butter
2 oz. beeswax pastilles
2.25 oz. buriti oil
.15 oz. cedarwood essential oil
.1 oz. lavender essential oil
biodegradable glitter, to suit

Instructions:

As with the majority of my skin care recipes, you will need a digital scale to weigh out the ingredients. In addition, you will also need a Halloween silicone mold of your choice. (I used this one.) My Halloween solid lotion bar recipe made four lotion bars – one each of a pumpkin, a bat, a skull and a ghost.

Begin by weighing out the bacuri butter, beeswax and buriti oil. Combine in a heat proof Pyrex measuring cup or similar. Gently heat until the beeswax and bacuri butter have melted using either the double boiler method or in your microwave at 30% power.

Once melted, remove from heat. Then weigh out the essential oils and stir into the lotion bar ingredients you just melted.

Next, lightly dust the inside of your mold with bio-glitter. (I used this purple fuschia glitter.) If desired, you can also stir some glitter into your melted ingredients. (You’ll just need to wait a little longer before pouring to allow the lotion to hit that point just before it starts to solidify, then stir again prior to pouring into your mold. Otherwise all of the glitter just sinks the bottom.)

Now pour your ingredients into your mold. (I recommend placing your mold on a cutting board prior to pouring. This way, you can easily transfer your mold to the refrigerator for faster cooling times.)

Once your Halloween solid lotion bars have fully solidified, pop them out of the mold then package as desired. These look great in glassine bags or in PET plastic amber jars. I used a 4 oz. amber jar from SKS Bottle & Packaging for the small pumpkin and sugar skull solid bars. The bat, however, needed the 8 oz. sized jar

I  then added Halloween stickers to the lids of my containers to decorate them. Although, washi tape would be super cute too! You could use it either on the lid or around the diameter of the jar. I also thought about making an emulsified sugar scrub or foaming bath butter, filling the jar with it, then nestling a solid lotion bar on top. Tell me what you think!

I am so ready for fall. It is, by far, my favorite season of the year. And not just because it’s pumpkin spice season. (Although that does add another reason to the yes column.) If you’re a fellow pumpkin spice fan, then keep reading to learn how to score a set of FREE warm and spicy pumpkin scented cleaning products. Plus check out some great tips on getting your home ready for fall along with twelve of my favorite pumpkin spice recipes that you can craft indoors on a chilly weekend.

For the love of pumpkin spice.

OMG. Summer has just dragged on forever this year. But basic or not, I’m so ready for pumpkin spice season! My boyfriend, on the other hand, is just psyched it’s finally football season again. While he’s cheering on the Jacksonville Jaguars, you can find me sneaking across the street for a pumpkin spice latte at our local Starbucks.

I just can’t resist the warm, spicy taste of pumpkin spice – or the fragrant scent! So when I found out that Grove Collaborative now has Mrs. Meyer’s cleaning products in their new fall scents, I was instantly sold. Mrs. Meyer’s has three great scents for fall – mum, apple cider and pumpkin.

If you aren’t already a Grove customer, you can score a free trio of Mrs. Meyer’s cleaning products in your scent of choice. You’ll also get a replaceable head dish brush, free shipping and a free VIP trial when you make your first $20 purchase. You have to hurry, though, as this is a super limited time offer.

I’m a VIP member at Grove and I love that I can get free shipping AND a free gift with every order (with a minimum purchase.) Last month I scored a FREE Grove Collaborative bamboo prep board.

I’ve also gotten completely hooked on their European dish cloth set. These durable and absorbent sponge cloths are perfect for messes – and they helped my boyfriend give up his paper towel habit. Because these sponges are reusable, you simply pop them into the dishwasher to easily disinfect and clean them. If you’ve been working toward a zero waste lifestyle that reduces your carbon footprint, these dish cloths are a must!

Now if I can just break Greg of his Keurig coffee and convert him over to my favorite, lower acidity cold brew.

Once you’ve scored your free cleaning kit from Grove, be sure to check out these great tips for preparing your home for fall. Plus be sure to try one or more of my favorite pumpkin spice skin care and beauty recipes at the end of this post.

Fall homemaking & cleaning tips.

1. I’m not usually a baker (that’s more of my roomie’s expertise) but something about pumpkin spice season always inspires me to whip up an apple pie or a batch of pumpkin muffins. When that happens, Mrs. Meyer’s dish soap and the Grove replaceable head dish brush are perfect for a quick cleanup! Plus, they make a pretty sink-side display.

2. A fresh towel is such an underrated way to add some seasonal vibes to your kitchen. Grove’s heirloom red kitchen towel adds a pop of fall color and can handle the toughest messes.

Whether we’re hosting a casual cookout or a football party, fall is my favorite time of year to entertain. My roommate and I always make sure the guest bathroom is stocked with fluffy hand towels, plenty of toilet paper, and of course a seasonal hand soap. I receive so many compliments on Mrs. Meyer’s fall fragrances (and guests always want to know where I got them since our local stores sell out so quickly!)

3. Brisk fall days are perfect for tackling outdoor tasks and preparing your home for winter. Mrs. Meyer’s multi-surface is the only cleaner you need for wiping down patio furniture, light fixtures, and metal railings. Plus, the bold scents give you a boost of energy while you’re cleaning!

4. As the nights get cooler, it’s time to pull out your cozy fall bedding. To make your favorite blanket even softer and cozier, add a few drops of Grove’s lavender essential oil to Grove’s wool dryer balls before you toss them in the dryer!

My roommate, Bambi, wasn’t really sure about the dryer balls when I first purchased them, but now she’s hooked. Not only does it make our laundry softer, it also reduces static and decreases drying time so we can save energy.

5. Switching over your closet? Before you store your summer clothes, give them a good wash with Method laundry detergent so they’re fresh for next season.

I love using Method’s 4x concentrated laundry detergent. I bought the ginger mango fragrance two months ago and still have a ton of detergent left. I love the scent. However I really love that it doesn’t irritate my sensitive skin. Not only is this detergent HE friendly – I use it at my boyfriend’s apartment too – the bottle is designed so the cap doesn’t get all gummy from measuring out the amount I need.

6. Just like I reach for different clothes once the weather gets cooler, I also reach for different skincare products. I can’t live without Grove’s nourishing coconut skin superfood — it can be used as a face and body moisturizer, cuticle cream, and even eye makeup remover!

7. The start of fall also means the start of cold and flu season! To keep the sniffles at bay, I always keep a Grove hydrating hand sanitizer spray in my purse or travel bag. (This stuff is AMAZING!)

8. Can you believe stores are already putting out Halloween decor? This year, I’m aiming for zero-waste with natural decor like pinecones, potted mums, and gourds. They look festive and don’t take up that much needed storage space!

9. Tip to save on your fall product needs: Once you’ve submitted your Grove order, you will be signed up for the free 60 day VIP trial. For 60 days, save even more with free shipping, free gifts, price matching, exclusive sales and personal service. What are you waiting for? Order today!

Homemade Apple Pie Soap Tutorial for Fall Gifts

Learn how to craft your own melt and pour soaps for seasonal fall gifts with this instructional homemade apple pie soap tutorial from guest blogger, Amy Turner, of Just Soapin Around.

Homemade Apple Pie Soap Tutorial for Fall Gifts. Learn how to craft your own melt and pour soaps for seasonal fall gifts with this instructional homemade apple pie soap tutorial.

Both homemade apple pie and pumpkin pie have long been contenders for the most popular of fall pies. While both taste phenomenal, you may prefer to opt for pumpkin pie over apple as it’s the healthier choice. Luckily for you, with this homemade apple pie soap tutorial, you don’t have to choose. There aren’t any nutritional concerns where this homemade apple pie soap is concerned. So you can indulge in all the apple pie your heart desires, without worrying about sugar or calories.

Every Thanksgiving my grandmother would bake a fresh homemade apple pie. It’s one of my fondest memories of her. So I created this homemade apple pie soap in order to honor my grandmother and her memory.

Picture this. Running around kicking up leaves that have fallen from the trees after the colors have changed. Feeling the cool air against your face and suddenly you smell the aroma of your grandma’s baked apple pie. The scents of cinnamon, apple and a touch of vanilla with that warm flakey crust. Sounds amazing, right?

That is how I envisioned my homemade apple pie soap when I was in the process of creating it. What I ended up with is an amazing oatmeal glycerin soap that really looks like apple pie. Scented using an apple pie fragrance oil, this homemade melt and pour soap tutorial is perfect for fall. And it makes wonderful homemade holiday gifts too!

Homemade Apple Pie Soap Tutorial for Fall Gifts. Learn how to craft your own melt and pour soaps for seasonal fall gifts with this instructional homemade apple pie soap tutorial.

Homemade Apple Pie Soap Tutorial

Supplies & Materials:

2 lb. clear glycerin melt and pour soap base
additional clear melt & pour soap, as needed
2 lb. melt and pour oatmeal soap base
apple pie fragrance oil
8-cavity round silicone mold
6-cavity rectangle silicone mold
liquid soap colorants
crinkle cutter
containers & utensils for mixing

Instructions:

Step #1

Using a sharp knife, cut a 2lb. brick of melt and pour oatmeal soap base in half. Cut one pound of the oatmeal soap base halves into small squares. Then place eight soap squares into eight cavities of a silicone cupcake mold.

Step #2

Now cut the 2 lb. brick of the clear glycerin melt and pour soap base into chunks. Combine in a large glass Pyrex measuring cup.

Then heat the soap base in the microwave in 30 second increments until melted. (Alternately you can also use a double boiler.)

Step #3

Add 1 oz. of the apple pie fragrance oil and stir to combine. (Because apple pie fragrance oil contains vanilla, your soap will likely darken over time. To avoid this, you can add an equal amount of vanilla color stabilizer to your melted soap base when you add the fragrance.) Now separate the melted soap base into three containers.

Step #4

Add a few drops of yellow soap colorant to the first container of soap. Next, add a few drops of red to the second container of soap. This is then followed by a few drops each of both red and yellow soap colorant added to the third bowl. Stir the melted soap base in each of the containers to thoroughly incorporate the colorant throughout the melted soap base.

Step #5

Now slowly pour the first color of your melted soap over the oatmeal squares in your cupcake mold. (Take care to ensure the temperature of your soap is between 115°-120°F to avoid unintentionally melting the oatmeal soap squares.)

Spritz the top of the poured soap with rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle or mister to remove any air bubbles. Then pop your mold in the refrigerator.

Once hardened, repeat with the remaining two colors, spraying each layer with rubbing alcohol before pouring the next layer.

Step #6

While the base of your homemade apple pie soaps are hardening, you can start working on the pie crust for your homemade apple pie soap. For this step you will use a rectangle silicone mold.

Cut the remaining half of the oatmeal soap base into chunks and heat until melted.

Next, pour a thin layer of the oatmeal melt and pour soap base into each cavity. Spritz the top of the melted soap with rubbing alcohol to remove any air bubbles, then allow to cool.

Step #7

Once the oatmeal soap has hardened, remove it from the mold. Then cut each section of soap into four strips using a crinkle soap cutter. Set aside.

Step #8

Once your scented apple pie soaps have fully hardened in the mold, you can apply your oatmeal soap pie crust. Start by unmolding the apple pie soaps.

Step #9

Melt a small amount of clear melt and pour soap base in a heat safe container.

Then spread a thin layer of melted clear base onto your oatmeal soap strips. Apply four strips of soap to the tops of each homemade apple pie soap in a lattice pattern.

After you have applied all four soap strips to your apple pie soaps, cut off any excess.

Step #10

Put each of the homemade apple pie soaps back into the silicone mold.

Then spray the tops of each homemade apple pie soap with rubbing alcohol.

Next, pour a thin layer of the melted clear glycerin soap base on top of each pie. This gives your apple pie soaps a glazed look. (You may have to reheat or melt more of the clear soap base for this step.) Follow with rubbing alcohol to remove any air bubbles, if needed.

Allow the soap to harden. Then take each homemade apple pie soap out of mold. Cut off any excess soap and smooth the edges as needed.

Your homemade apple pie soaps are now ready for gifting!

I recommend wrapping each bar of homemade apple pie soap tightly in foodservice film to store when not in use or prior to gifting. This will keep the soap from attracting moisture from the air.

I hope you enjoyed my homemade apple pie soap tutorial. If you have any questions about the process, please feel free to ask them in the comments. In the meantime be sure to follow me on Facebook for sneak peeks at new products and sales notifications.

Homemade Fall Soaps for the Perfect Morning Pick Me Up!

Let’s face it. Mondays suck. The solution? That one’s tough. But a little morning pick-me-up can go a long way towards perking up your mood. While these homemade fall soaps aren’t going to magically make your workload a breeze, they will bring a smile to your face. Plus they’re a great little reminder that sometimes it’s the little things that can turn it all around.

Homemade Fall Soaps for the Perfect Morning Pick Me Up!

While my Mondays aren’t as insane as they used to be when I worked for someone else, they can still just as challenging. Don’t get me wrong. Self-employment has its merits and its perks. However, I still have weekly goals, challenges and deadlines that I have to meet to keep advertisers. Otherwise, I don’t make the money I need to live off of. And just like you, when you’re sick but don’t have paid sick days, I’m typing away at the computer planning social media or struggling through processing photos for my next DIY.

In fact, last week I had a fibro flare up. This was followed by a return of TMJ. Both of these things are aggravated by stress but also in turn cause more stress. So I had to find something to help break the cycle. In the end, it’s you all – and some of my long time fans – that reminded me that it’s all worth it. And that, no, I’m not just writing for myself but also people that I relate to and that relate to me. Browsing all of the new homemade falls soaps out now on Etsy – that brought it all back home.

The best homemade soaps for fall! These lovely artisan soaps are inspired by the colors and scents of fall and are the perfect Monday morning pick me up to start off your week!

As a former seller on Etsy myself (and no stranger to farmer’s markets either!) I wanted to share some of my favorite fall soaps that I discovered. These amazing soaps are not only inspiring, but the artisans who crafted these homemade fall soaps are also small businesses owners. Perhaps like yourself. So I hope you’ll take the time to check out the creative soapmaking ideas they developed to celebrate the season as well as support those artists and soapmakers you love in their endeavor by making a purchase.
