I love warm weather. Not only am I able to to be more active when the weather is nice, but there are so many more activities I can enjoy outside. It’s also a great time to chuck my tennis shoes for flips flops and sandals – or simply go barefoot at the river or by the pool.

If you're going to be spending time out on the water this summer, then you need to take extra care of your feet. Learn how to make this natural antifungal foot salve recipe to promote foot health and prevent athlete's foot, toenail fungus and even candida!

Just last weekend Greg and I were down by the river (on a very rainy day!) freeing a snapping turtle who’d wandered too far. We found the little guy in the parking garage for Greg’s apartment building not far from a very busy street. As it was dark outside when we found him, we took the turtle in to stay the night with us. We put him in a large bowl with a few water drops and some greens until morning.

Freeing a snapping turtle down by the river that we found in the parking garage.

The next day we ventured off to the boat access off the greenway just across from where Greg lives to let the turtle go. The river was insane that day as we’d had multiple days of rain. So I set the turtle in the grass about five feet back from the river so he wouldn’t get swept away. Seeming pleased, that little guy took a few steps then nestled himself beneath the grass so he could chillax.

If you’re ready to start embarking on your own warm weather adventures, you’re probably going to want to lose your shoes at some point. However, if you have athlete’s foot or toenail fungus, that’s not something you can hide if you aren’t wearing shoes. My natural antifungal foot salve recipe can help alleviate symptoms and prevent the reoccurrence of athlete’s foot, toenail fungus and even candida.

About My Natural Antifungal Foot Salve Recipe

There are many common natural antifungal ingredients that you’ve probably already heard of. These include things such as black walnut hulls, coconut oil, garlic, lavender buds, neem oil, wild oregano oil, turmeric and tea tree oil. These ingredients are found in many of the natural home remedies that are used to treat foot related fungal infections. However, holistic home remedy options for foot or nail fungus don’t have to be complicated – or even contain a lot of ingredients.

The base for my natural antifungal foot salve recipe contains a blend of just three holistic ingredients. Those ingredients are organic cosmetic beeswax, refined coconut oil and neem oil. Both neem oil and coconut oil have strong, proven antifungal properties. Because this salve contains neem oil, however, the addition of organic essential oils will make your natural antifungal foot salve smell a lot better. And these essential oils have their own benefits when used in skin care too.

What is Neem Oil?

Neem oil is a natural carrier oil. It is derived from the pressed fruits and seeds of the neem tree – an evergreen tree that is endemic to India. Due to it’s natural health and skin care benefits, neem oil has a long history of use in both Ayurvedic and Unani medicine.

Both a powerful anti-inflammatory and analgesic, neem oil also possesses antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties. As such, it’s often used topically in natural skin care preparations to fight rheumatism, eczema, ringworm, athlete’s foot, cold sores, psoriasis, warts, chronic syphilitic sores, infected burn wounds, and slow-healing skin ulcers. Additionally, neem oil can also help to control various skin infections including scabies and candida.

Therefore neem oil is a key component of my natural antifungal foot salve recipe. Combined with the natural antimicrobial properties of coconut oil in addition to its antifungal agents, like monocaprin and monolaurin, this foot salve sets you up for optimal foot health.

AntiFungal Essential Oils

There are many natural essential oils with antifungal properties. In addition to both oregano and tea tree essential oils previously mentioned, many other essential oils naturally deter the growth of fungus. These antifungal essential oils include thyme, clove, lavender, geranium, chamomile, cedarwood, cinnamon bark, frankincense, lemongrass, pine, ravensara and rosemary.

Some of these essential oils can irritate skin, such as clove, cinnamon bark, pine, ravensara, cedarwood and thyme. Therefore use these essential oils with caution for topical applications. However many others are safe to use when properly diluted. You can use up twelve drops of essential oil per ounce. This is normally considered a safe amount for skin care applications such as my natural antifungal foot salve recipe. So feel free to craft your own natural antifungal essential oil blends to suit your nose.

(Pregnant women should avoid certain essential oils. Always consult your health care provider before trying any alternative or holistic therapies. It’s also important to note that the recommended usage rate of essential oils for children is much lower than it is for adults.)

Get started with essential oils with four basic skin care recipes.

Pour your antifungal foot salve into jars.

Pour the anti-fungal foot salve into two 2 oz. glass jars. Once cool and the salve has solidified, screw on the lids.

To use, simply apply this salve to your feet after bathing and cover with socks.

You can also use my antifungal foot salve as a spot acne treatment. It’s especially awesome at pulling out white heads that are still beneath the skin overnight. And, it does it without drying out your skin. So you aren’t left with flaky, red irritated skin that store bought acne medications with benzoyl peroxide tend to give you.

When not in use, keep your anti-fungal foot salve stored in a cool, dry location. Your foot salve should last up to 12 months when properly stored.

Uses for Witch Hazel Extract for Skin Health (Plus ten recipes to make right now!)

Witch hazel extract has been used for centuries as a home remedy to soothe everything from swelling and sores to infections and natural skin care. Keep reading to learn more about the powerful herbal properties of this flowering shrub as well as some of my favorite recipes and uses for witch hazel extract.

Uses for Witch Hazel Extract for Skin Health (Plus ten recipes to make right now!) Pull your witch hazel out of the medicine cabinet for these natural home remedies + skin care recipes! Learn more about the powerful herbal properties of this flowering shrub as well discover some of my favorite recipes and uses for witch hazel extract. #witchhazel #herbalism #homeremedy #naturalremedy #remedies #skincare #diy #folkmedicine

Uses for Witch Hazel Extract

Witch hazel has a long history of use in North America. The Native Americans originally used both the leaves and bark from witch hazel as a natural folk remedy. Since then, we’ve discovered that witch hazel contains tannins making it useful in both traditional medicine and herbalism.

These tannins are what make witch hazel an astringent – and an effective anti-acne treatment. In addition, witch hazel also helps to reduce inflammation, draw skin together (which is why it’s such a great skin toner!) and slow bleeding.

Recently my dog, Jasper, had some issues with his ears, which is common for dachshunds. With money being incredibly tight right now, I wanted to avoid the vet if possible. While I have no issues with going into debt for my darling little stinker (more on that here) I prefer to avoid it if there are other remedies that are both safe and effective.

Choosing the right brand of witch hazel however is just as important as choosing the right essential oils. Not all witch hazel is created equal. Some varieties of witch hazel have additional ingredients you may not want for every application. While others sting or burn when applied. Because of this, I use Mountain Rose Herbs Witch Hazel Extract.

Mountain Rose Herbs witch hazel extract has double distilled. Unlike most commercial witch hazel brands that have only been distilled once, their witch hazel only contains 14% alcohol. As a result their witch hazel contains 86% organic witch hazel extract. This makes their witch hazel more potent and soothing. Additionally, it neither stings nor smells like alcohol.

I applied a Mountain Rose herbs Witch Hazel Extract to Jasper’s affected ear twice a day using a cotton ball to gently clean his ear and remove excess wax. Not only did he stopped scratching almost immediately after application, but his ear was almost completely back to a healthy pink after a week of use.

(If you have a dog you may also want to check out my other natural remedies for dogs. Common Uses for Witch Hazel Extract

With a long history of medicinal use throughout the world, it’s no wonder witch hazel has since become a staple in today’s households. There are many uses for witch hazel for health and skin care in your home.

Applied topically witch hazel extract soothes and promotes healing of skin. It is able to help remedy the following skin issues:

  • Itching
  • Inflammation
  • Insect Bites
  • Minor Bruises
  • Varicose Veins
  • Minor Wounds and Infections
  • Varicose Veins
  • Hemorrhoids
  • Acne
  • Diaper rash
  • Stretch Marks
  • Razor Burn
  • Minor Burns and Sunburns
  • Dandruff

Additionally, as it’s naturally deodorizing, witch hazel is effective both as a natural deodorant as well as for deodorizing tough pet odors in your home. For these applications, simply use your witch hazel extract in a spray bottle with up to 12 drops of essential oil per ounce of witch hazel as desired.

If you read my recipe for making aloe vera bath melts, then you’ll recall that in Ayurvedic medicine aloe vera is used to tackle skin issues like eczema and psoriasis. Additionally, in part due to its anti-inflammatory properties, aloe vera also helps to promote healing, moisturize and soothe dry skin and can even aid in the prevention of acne.

Like aloe, neem oil, is also prized for its anti-inflammatory properties. When used in natural skin care products, neem oil addresses skin conditions such as eczema, acne, ringworm, cold sores, psoriasis, warts, infected burn wounds and slow-healing skin ulcers. It has also been shown to help control various skin infections.

While the natural nutty garlic like scent of neem oil is not typically one someone might enjoy, the amount of neem oil used in my aloe vera soap recipe is easily masked with the inclusion of either an essential oil or a fragrance oil in the recipe.

Aloe Vera Soap Recipe

© Rebecca D. Dillon

Ingredients:

.8 oz. castor oil (5%)
4 oz. refined coconut oil (25%)
1.6 oz. neem oil (10%)
4.8 oz. pomace olive oil (30%)
3.2 oz. safflower oil (20%)
1.6 oz. (fractionated) shea nut oil (10%)

5.25 oz. aloe vera gel
2.2 oz. sodium hydroxide/lye

.5 oz. essential oil (or 1 oz. fragrance oil) of choice
1 teaspoon apple moss green mica, optional

Soap Notes:

Safety first! Before you begin make sure to take all necessary safety precautions when working with lye. This includes wearing eye protection and gloves. Additionally, you should use only heat safe containers. None of your containers or your utensils should be aluminum.

My aloe vera soap recipe is made using the cold process soapmaking method. If you’ve never made cold process soap, you can learn how it’s made via my cold process soapmaking tutorial. If you’ve never made cold process soap or worked with lye, I don’t recommend my aloe vera soap recipe as your first recipe. Instead, start with a beginner’s soap recipe like this one.

I specifically used this apple moss green mica powder from Brambleberry in my aloe vera soap recipe. However, you can use any cold process soap stable mica powder of your choice based on the color you’d like you soap to be. For the scent, I used a rose quartz fragrance oil also from Brambleberry, which does cause some acceleration in cold process soap.

I superfatted the oils in my aloe vera soap recipe at 6%. The additional fat from the aloe vera gel is not included in that total. This recipe yields six hard, skin conditioning aloe vera soap bars when using this rectangle silicone mold.

Instructions:

Using a digital scale, weigh out the aloe vera gel into a heat safe container. (I recommend starting with chilled aloe vera gel.) Then, in a separate container, weigh out the lye. Pour the lye into the aloe vera gel and mix well. Keep mixing until all of the lye has dissolved, then set aside to cool.

Next, weigh out the soapmaking oils and combine in a stainless steel pot or heat safe container. Heat on the stove top or at reduced power in a microwave or crock pot until melted. Remove from heat, then set aside to cool. When both the aloe-lye mixture and the soapmaking oils have cooled to around 90°-95°F, you’re ready to make soap!

If you are using mica powder to color your soap, measure out the mica powder and mix into the cooled oils using an immersion blender. Then weigh the essential or fragrance oil and stir into the oils as well. (As the fragrance oil I used accelerates trace, I chose to add the fragrance oil prior to adding the aloe-lye mixture. However, you can add your chosen fragrance or essential oil at light trace if desired.)

Now pour the aloe-lye into the soapmaking oils and mix with an immersion blender until you reach trace.

Once your soap has traced, pour the soap batter into the cavities of your silicone mold. Cover the mold with plastic cling wrap if desired, then set aside in a safe location where it won’t be disturbed.

Your aloe vera soap bars should be ready to unmold the next day. If not, give them another day before unmolding.

Once you’ve unmolded your soap bars, set them aside in a dry location for a minimum of four weeks to cure. Then wrap and label as desired for personal use of gifting.

Because I tend to have dry skin in the winter, I prefer whipped sugar scrubs that are made from a combination of emulsified butters and oils rather than a foaming bath butter. However, nothing beats the cloud-like airiness of a whipped sugar scrub combined my favorite fragrance, exfoliating sugar and skin nourishing ingredients.

Get your sugar fix now with one (or all!) of the 17 best whipped sugar scrubs below! (You’ll find my favorites that you can buy first, followed by my favorite whipped sugar scrubs to DIY.)

Making Your Own Whipped Sugar Scrubs

Now that you’ve tried – and fallen head over heels for – the awesomeness that is the whipped sugar scrub, why not try your hand at making your own?

I’ve found that a lot of the simple recipes that whipped sugar scrubs call for include coconut oil. It’s important to note, that while coconut oil does have some amazing skin care properties, it also rates pretty high on the comedogenic chart. What this means is that it’s likely to clog pores in most people which in turn can lead to acne.

Additionally, I find that straight up coconut oil irritates my dry skin. If this has been your experience as well, you can easily substitute the coconut oil in any of these whipped sugar scrub recipes with babassu oil.

While coconut oil rates a 4 on the comedogenic chart, babassu oil is a low-comedogenic oil with a rating of only 2 – meaning it won’t clog pores for most people. It also works as a mild moisturizer that calms and soothes all skin types, whether you’re acne prone or suffer from skin conditions like eczema or dry skin.

What are the Other Skin Care Benefits Babassu Oil?

Babassu oil has many of the same properties to regular coconut oil. Like coconut oil, babassu oil is semi-solid at room temperature with a melting point around body temperature – slightly higher than coconut oils own 76°F melt point. A great substitute for those with coconut allergies, this mild moisturizer also won’t leave skin feeling oily or greasy and it works great in hair too.

In addition babassu oil contains a high amount of skin beneficial fatty acids including lauric, stearic, myristic, palmitic and oleic acid. It’s also rich in vitamin E, a natural antioxidant, and has anti-inflammatory properties. It’s a wonderful choice for an itchy scalp or dry skin and hair. (Learn more about using babassu oil for hair care here.)

You can learn more about common carrier oils and where they rank on the comedogenic chart at the Holistic Health Herbalist here. Also be sure to check out my other skin care recipes that contain babassu oil here.
