Lavender Bergamot Deodorant Recipe with French Green Clay

Natural Deodorant Recipe with French Green Clay! Whether you prefer a stick or a cream deodorant, this versatile lavender bergamot deodorant recipe with French green clay offers some of the best wetness and odor protection yet! And it's completely 100% natural. #deodorant #diy #health #wellness #skincare #recipe #natural #beauty #lifestyle

I’ve accumulated quite the stash of lifestyle and beauty tips over the past several decades. Like retinol will clear up your hormonal acne at any age and flossing can not only prevent a receding gum line, but also stop it in its tracks. But I’ve also learned that antiperspirant will, over time, make you both sweat and stink more.

Why Should I Switch to a Natural Deodorant?

Our bodies evolved to sweat. It’s what sets us apart from other mammals. Sweating keeps our bodies from overheating. As a result, we are able to work harder and longer. Antiperspirants run counteractive to this. Aluminum-based ingredients block our sweat glands to prevent this very necessary and vital function. In turn it traps odor causing bacteria from exiting our bodies – odor that the antiperspirant then masks. This can lead to some pretty negative side effects and cause worsening odor over time. (Which is why you now need a clinical strength antiperspirant but didn’t when you were younger.)

When you then also compound this with the other potentially harmful ingredients found in some brands of antiperspirants. These ingredients include triclosan which can disrupt hormones and environmental estrogen like BHT and parabens. And over time it’s possible that these ingredients can lead to health problems.

While there’s no definitive research that can state absolutely that these ingredients – which are used well outside of moderation – do cause health problems as components of antiperspirants, there’s also no research that proves it doesn’t. And as time passes and we learn more about how the products we use can affect our bodies, it may be time to err on the side of caution.

Having personally made the switch from an antiperspirant to using my own homemade deodorant recipe over a year ago, I can say I will never go back. Not only do I stink less now than I did when I used antiperspirants, I also sweat less. And as someone who suffers from fibromyalgia, I also FEEL better the majority of the time.

However, because I am who I am, whenever I run out of my current batch of deodorant I come up with an entirely new recipe. Because, hey. Why not? Life’s short. Mix it up. Yada yada yada. Doesn’t matter. What this means for you, is every few months I throw out a new natural deodorant recipe for you to try. So there you go.

About My Lavender Bergamot Deodorant Recipe

My latest and greatest is a lavender bergamot deodorant recipe. It contains my staple ingredients like arrowroot powder and magnesium hydroxide, but omits coconut oil which has a tendency to clog pores due to its high non-comedogenic rating.

As a twist, I also included French green clay in my lavender bergamot deodorant recipe. And instead of my usual candelilla or carnauba wax, I used beeswax instead. The bonus? This recipe works as a cream deodorant in a jar or as a stick deodorant in a tube.

Why Do You Use French Green Clay?

French green clay, sometimes also called sea clay, is made up of micro molecules that are able to “drink” oils, impurities and even toxic substances from your skin. (Kind of like activated charcoal but without the mess.) Commonly used to fight and prevent acne in addition to routine weekly face masks, this light green clay is naturally rich in minerals and is valued for its toning properties.

Even more interesting is that French green clay obtains its light green color from naturally occurring iron oxide and decomposed plant material – the same life cycle that the earth uses to regenerate herself. In turn, its soft texture and elemental composition lends itself well to a variety of skin care preparations.

While it’s a common misconception that all French green clay comes from France (it does not) I specifically used the French green clay sold by Mountain Rose Herbs. Their untreated French green clay is specifically quarry mined from naturally occurring deposits in France and makes a lovely addition to this natural deodorant recipe.

Lavender Bergamot Deodorant Recipe

© Rebecca Dawn Dillon

Ingredients:

6 oz. arrowroot powder
3 oz. magnesium hydroxide
1 oz. French green clay
2 oz. cocoa butter
2 oz. baobab oil
.5 oz. 100% neem oil
.5 oz. refined shea butter
1/2 teaspoon beeswax pastilles
.1 oz. lavender essential oil
.05 oz. bergamot essential oil

Instructions:

You’ll need a digital scale to weigh all of the ingredients for my lavender bergamot deodorant recipe, except for the beeswax pastilles. You will need a teaspoon measuring spoon to measure out the wax.

To make my lavender bergamot deodorant recipe with French green clay, begin by weighing out the cocoa butter and shea  butter into a large glass Pyrex measuring cup or glass bowl.

Next, measure out a level teaspoon of the beeswax pastilles and add it to your container. Melt these ingredients either in a microwave at 30% power or a double boiler until melted.

Once melted, weigh out the baobab oil and neem oil. Stir these oils into the melted butters and wax. (If needed, you can gently heat the deodorant mixture again then mix well to combine.)

While the lavender bergamot deodorant mixture is still hot, weigh out and stir in both the arrowroot powder, French green clay and magnesium hydroxide. Mix well with to combine.

Then follow with the essential oils, weighing out the amounts first, then stir them into the deodorant mixture until thoroughly incorporated.

Finally, pour your lavender bergamot deodorant into your desired containers of choice. I used 4 oz. paperboard containers for mine.

These eco-friendly paperboard jars are renewable, recyclable, compostable, and biodegradable. They also have an oil resistant paper barrier so they work well with products such as lip balms, salves, deodorants and even body butters. You can purchase these eco-friendly jars in bulk from SKS Bottle & Packaging here. Another alternative is to pour these into empty deodorant tubes.

Allow your deodorant to cool and solidify, then cap and label as desired for personal use or gifting.

If you’d like to recreate my lavender bergamot deodorant recipe to sell, then you’ll need to follow good manufacturing practices (GMP) when making your product. You’ll find that the book, Good Manufacturing Practices for Soap and Cosmetic Handcrafters by Marie Gale, is a valuable resource if you’re just getting started making your own homemade soaps, skin care products and cosmetics.

In addition to GMP, you’ll also need to follow FDA guidelines for labeling your products. If you’re unsure about the rules and regulations regarding labeling cosmetics, the book, Soap and Cosmetic Labeling: How to Follow the Rules and Regs Explained in Plain English by Marie Gale, spells out everything you need to know to legally label your handcrafted products.

This manuka oil deodorant recipe is a great choice for anyone wanting to switch to a natural, non-irritating deodorant. Made with antifungal and antibacterial manuka essential oil and detoxifying, mineral rich sea clay, this natural manuka oil deodorant fights body odor without synthetic or controversy ingredients and offers a fresh, uni-sex scent perfect for summer.

DIY Lavender Body Butter with Neem Oil

I may receive compensation from links on this site. See my disclosure policy.

This DIY lavender body butter with neem oil not only offers amazing skin protection and moisture, but it also helps to soothe shingles pain – phantom or otherwise. How do I know this? Because last Christmas I ended up with shingles. And I’m not elderly or immunocompromised. What I did have though, was a heck of a lot of stress.

I honestly had considering writing a blog post about how not to get shingles over the holidays. Sort, of a soapmaker’s guide with quips and puns that relate back to our quirky habits. Some of which could lead to an unfortunate virus uprising.

Through various soapmaking groups I’ve learned that quite a few of us do our shopping for ingredients and supplies while intoxicated on a wee bit of wine. This inevitably means we spend more. And anyone who drinks alcohol semi-regularly can become B6 deficient. I know that a B6 deficiency is one of the underlying causes of a shingles outbreak. Because after a visit to the doctor they recommended I take 50mg of vitamin B6 twice a day for two months.

I also know that overspending can cause us stress. I mean, if it didn’t, there wouldn’t be all of those memes with the UPS guy and that note requesting he hold your packages until later should your husband happen to be home. Sure overspending or lack of money can be stressful. But a husband who is disappointed in you – that can be worse. And everyone knows one of the leading causes of breakups and divorce are money problems. And fights or break ups, well they’re going to be stressful too.

So my best advice for you right now is to – well, obviously don’t stop drinking wine. Then we’d go batty for sure. But do be sure to keep your levels of B6 up during the entire holiday season. High amounts of B6 is found in foods like red meat and cashews. But supplements also do the trick.

In addition, I also highly recommend having your soapmaking supplies sent to a friend or neighbor’s house – even your place of employment if you don’t work from home. I mean it’s not really even a deception. You’re simply having those much needed supplies delivered elsewhere for safety reasons. A lot of packages do go missing this time of year. That he happened to miss seeing the orders coming or being unpacked, well, he probably just wasn’t paying attention. I mean there are plenty of other things men fail to notice on a daily basis when it comes to women. Or they simply forget. Or weren’t really listening to begin with.

But I digress. I first made a version of my DIY lavender body butter for my grandmother three years ago. Her all time favorite scent is lavender. And seeing as how its common for most of us to suffer from dry skin this time of year I thought a body butter was in order.

Why Use a DIY Lavender Body Butter?

At that time I had just started experimenting a lot with neem oil. Long used in both Ayurvedic and Unani medicine, neem oil has been shown to have natural anti-inflammatory and analgesic (pain killing) properties. It’s often used topically to ease the symptoms of rheumatism, eczema, ringworm, athlete’s foot, cold sores, psoriasis, warts, chronic syphilitic sores, infected burn wounds, and slow-healing skin ulcers. Additionally it has also been shown to help control various skin infections including scabies and candida.

On the other hand, studies have also demonstrated that lavender essential oil also possesses anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. When used in skin care applications, lavender can help to ease pain, promote the healing of cuts and burns as well as promote the reduction swelling and redness. When properly diluted, lavender essential oil can soothe everything from sore muscles, joint pain and rheumatism to sprains and backaches.

Little did I know that the combination of neem oil and lavender essential oil in my DIY lavender body butter would help to reduce my grandmother’s recurring phantom pain from shingles in addition to soothing and moisturizing dry, itchy skin. But that it did. So when I developed shingles the day after Christmas last year, I whipped up a batch for myself. During the onset of my shingles it certainly didn’t take the pain away completely. But it really helped to ease the pain so it was more bearable.

DIY Lavender Body Butter with Neem Oil! Learn more about this amazing homemade body butter and homemade gift idea now at Soap Deli News blog. #diy #bodybutter #recipe #gift #lavender #neemoil #christmas #crafts #handmade #skincare #beauty

I also found that applying heat went a long way towards helping ease the pain from shingles as well. So I used a heating pad during the actual breakout in addition to an ungodly amount of ibuprofen. Then, once there was no longer a mess of oozing gross blisters (for those of you who can remember having chicken pox – I was four and at best I remember one colloidal oatmeal bath and being told not to scratch) I used a combination of equal parts lavender, ginger and chili seed essential oils to warm my skin, increase circulation, ease pain and reduce inflammation. It also offered a lot of relief with the recurring phantom pain I experienced for about six months after the shingles had cleared up.

Following is the recipe for my DIY lavender body butter of awesome. Not only does it offer some amazing skin care benefits, but it’s also non-greasy. I hope you like the recipe. But what I really really hope, is that you never get shingles.

(One of my best friends and a recent breast cancer survivor just got shingles in her EAR! Yes. Her ear. It was not awesome and harder to treat. She also couldn’t hear out of that ear for about a week. While not a soapmaker, she is a jewelry artist and fellow wine drinker. She’s also going through a divorce so there’s no husband to worry her. However the advice on the B6 still stands.)

Instructions:

To make these DIY bundt cake salt scrub wedding favors, begin by using a digital scale to weigh out the kokum butter and shea butter. Combine in a large glass Pyrex measuring cup, then heat in the microwave at 30% power until melted. Alternately you can also use a double boiler.

Remove from heat, then weigh out and stir in the jojoba oil.

Next, using a graduated transfer pipette, measure out the polysorbate 80 as well as the fragrance oil and stir into the wet ingredients.

In a separate container, weigh out the Epsom salt. Now use a measuring spoon to measure out the mica powder and the turquoise glitter and mix into the salt until thoroughly combined.

Pour the colored salt into the wet ingredients and mix well with a fork until both salt and color are even throughout the wet salt scrub base.

Place the container filled with your salt scrub either in the refrigerator or freezer just until it starts to thicken up and the salt stays suspended when remixed.

Mix the salt scrub again, then fill the cavities a mini bundt cake pan of your choice with a cavity diameter of between 1.5″ and 1.75″. (The mini bundt pan mold I used had cavities with a diameter of 1.75″ each. This recipe made eight solid bundt cake salt scrubs.)

Allow the salt scrubs to fully harden then remove from the mold. Then place them on a small plate or cutting board and put them in the freezer.

Now cut an ounce or two of white melt and pour base into chunks and combine in a small scientific glass beaker. Heat in 10-15 second increments in the microwave until melted, then set aside to cool slightly.

When the soap base has thickened slightly but is still pourable, remove the solid bundt cake salt scrubs from the freezer. Mix a small amount of silver glitter into the base, then pour the soap base across the tops of the salt scrubs in several directions so it looks like icing. (If the soap sinks into the salt scrubs, stop, refreeze the scrubs and let the soap cool off further.)

If desired, you can also dust the tops of the solid salt scrubs with additional glitter to suit.

Carefully run a knife under your salt scrubs to remove them from the cutting board.

Perhaps they feel too old for trick-or-treating and so they stay indoors, glued to a computer screen, realizing it’s both easier and cheaper to simply hit up the 75% off sales on candy the day after Halloween.

Non-Food Halloween Treats that will WOW your teens! Gifting your teen, or even your own friends and coworkers, these non-food Halloween treats can infuse some of the fun back into this spook-tacular holiday. And perhaps remind them to carve out a little time out for themselves devoid of technology and the drama of school life. Following you'll find the perfect creepy collection of handmade bath and body Halloween treats to haunt your bathroom this Halloween.

Of course, while sales are spectacular, they are not nearly as fun as participating in the holiday festivities. Gifting your teen, or even your own friends and coworkers, these non-food Halloween treats can infuse some of the fun back into this spook-tacular holiday. And perhaps remind them to carve out a little time for themselves devoid of technology and the drama of school/work life.

Following you’ll find the perfect creepy collection of handmade bath and body non-food Halloween treats to haunt your bathroom this year. (Quite honestly though, I seriously want to hoard all of these for myself!)
