Making Your Own Whipped Sugar Scrubs

Now that you’ve tried – and fallen head over heels for – the awesomeness that is the whipped sugar scrub, why not try your hand at making your own?

I’ve found that a lot of the simple recipes that whipped sugar scrubs call for include coconut oil. It’s important to note, that while coconut oil does have some amazing skin care properties, it also rates pretty high on the comedogenic chart. What this means is that it’s likely to clog pores in most people which in turn can lead to acne.

Additionally, I find that straight up coconut oil irritates my dry skin. If this has been your experience as well, you can easily substitute the coconut oil in any of these whipped sugar scrub recipes with babassu oil.

While coconut oil rates a 4 on the comedogenic chart, babassu oil is a low-comedogenic oil with a rating of only 2 – meaning it won’t clog pores for most people. It also works as a mild moisturizer that calms and soothes all skin types, whether you’re acne prone or suffer from skin conditions like eczema or dry skin.

What are the Other Skin Care Benefits Babassu Oil?

Babassu oil has many of the same properties to regular coconut oil. Like coconut oil, babassu oil is semi-solid at room temperature with a melting point around body temperature – slightly higher than coconut oils own 76°F melt point. A great substitute for those with coconut allergies, this mild moisturizer also won’t leave skin feeling oily or greasy and it works great in hair too.

In addition babassu oil contains a high amount of skin beneficial fatty acids including lauric, stearic, myristic, palmitic and oleic acid. It’s also rich in vitamin E, a natural antioxidant, and has anti-inflammatory properties. It’s a wonderful choice for an itchy scalp or dry skin and hair. (Learn more about using babassu oil for hair care here.)

You can learn more about common carrier oils and where they rank on the comedogenic chart at the Holistic Health Herbalist here. Also be sure to check out my other skin care recipes that contain babassu oil here.

This foaming oat body scrub recipe is homemade with skin soothing oat butter, tamanu oil and frankincense essential oil. Both frankincense and tamanu oil are purported to have anti-aging skin care properties and are therefore used in a variety of products that help to diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Both frankincense and tamanu oil are purported to have anti-aging skin care properties and are therefore used in a variety of products that help to diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Tamanu oil specifically possesses a variety of properties useful in skin care applications. It is a powerful anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antifungal, antibacterial and analgesic carrier oil. Additionally tamanu oil is also rich in antioxidants and is a wonderful moisturizer.

Because of this, tamanu oil has been traditionally used as a natural home remedy to promote the healing of minor wounds and abrasions, insect bites and sunburns. It’s also beneficial in relieving bothersome skin conditions such as acne, psoriasis, dry or scaly skin, and eczema.

My foaming oat body scrub recipe is suitable for all skin types, including normal and oily skin. As it contains a foaming bath whip, it can be used to exfoliate and cleanse skin in place of your usual soap or body wash.

This body scrub is perfect for those who prefer a product that rinses away completely after use rather than leaving beneficial oils behind. This makes it a great body scrub option for summer when skin tends to sweat and produce more oils.

And it’s scented with a jackfruit & kiwi fragrance oil for a to-die-for tropical fruit fragrance that’s perfect for summer.

What is moringa oil?

Moringa oil is a nutrient dense, extremely moisturizing carrier oil that is rich in vitamins A, C and E. It also has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. In addition, moringa oil has been shown to help promote healing when fighting bothersome skin conditions such as skin dermatitis, eczema and psoriasis. It can also help to fight the effects of aging by minimizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

What is oat butter?

Oat Butter is a soothing blend of oat oil and hydrogenated vegetable oil. When added to lotions, creams, and body butters, this ingredient helps to give the final product an extra rich, luxurious feel. Somewhat softer than shea butter, oat butter makes a wonderful addition to products formulated for sensitive skin.

Instructions:

My Jackfruit & Kiwi moisturizing sugar scrub recipe yields three 8 oz. sugar scrubs.

Using a digital scale, weigh out the cocoa butter and emulsifying wax into a large glass Pyrex measuring cup or similar. Heat in a microwave at 50% power until melted. (Alternately you can also use a double boiler.) Remove from heat.

Next, weigh out the oat butter and stir it into the melted wax and cocoa butter until melted.

Weigh and follow with the sweet almond oil and the moringa oil. Mix well.

Now weigh out the fragrance oil and stir into the moisturizing sugar scrub mixture. Set aside.

This homemade moisturizing sugar scrub recipe is formulated for exceptionally dry skin. Made using luxurious and richly hydrating moringa oil and skin soothing oat butter, this moisturizing sugar scrub can help to calm and soothe dry, itchy skin and inflammation. And it's scented with a jackfruit & kiwi fragrance oil for a to-die-for tropical fruit fragrance that's perfect for summer.

In a separate container weigh out and combine the sugar, jojoba beads and the mica powder. Whisk well with a fork until all of the ingredients are fully incorporated.

Now pour the dry ingredients into the liquid ingredients. Mix well with a fork until the wet and dry ingredients are fully incorporated with one another.

Allow your moisturizing sugar scrub to cool slightly then remix. Continue until no more oil rises to the top of the scrub.

You can now spoon (or pour depending on consistency) your moisturizing sugar scrub evenly into three Amber PET Heavy Wall 8 oz. Plastic Jars with Lined Aluminum Caps and screw on the lids. (You can find these containers at SKS Bottle & Packaging here.)

If desired, you can decorate your moisturizing sugar scrub containers. For my containers I used a strip of the Hand Made Modern Mixed Metallics Washi Tape around the amber jars.

I then added bee and flower stickers from the Victoria Beckham for Target Sticker Book over the washi tape and on the lids.

If you prefer instead to sell your moisturizing sugar scrubs, then you will need to label them according to FDA guidelines. If you are unsure about labeling laws then I highly recommend the book, Soap and Cosmetic Labeling: How to Follow the Rules and Regs Explained in Plain English, by Marie Gale. You may also want to consider using a preservative such as Optiphen.

This palmarosa lime natural body balm recipe helps to protect, soothe and replenish dry chapped skin with natural ingredients like oat butter, hemp seed oil and lanolin.
