My friend, Cathy, inspired me to make this golden glowtion shimmer oil recipe after seeing my mermaid shimmer spray. However, she was a looking for a much bolder shimmer and a simpler recipe to recreate. Therefore, I kept the ingredients for my Cleopatra’s golden glowtion shimmer oil recipe extremely simple but added a lot more mica.

For those of you who aren’t destroying your kitchen on a regular basis like the rest of us, this easy 4-ingredient recipe will also help to make the startup costs for this project a lot more affordable.

However, if you prefer the dry oil recipe I used for my mermaid shimmer spray, you can use that one instead. Just be sure to either double that recipe or halve the amount of mica. (The mermaid shimmer spray recipe yields one 4 oz. container while this one yields two.)

The mica for this golden glowtion shimmer oil does settle when not in use. So be prepared for that. I wanted to avoid using emulsifiers and other more complicated ingredients simply for the sake of keeping the mica suspended in the product. I found that a light dry oil works fine for this application. You just need to shake the golden glowtion vigorously before each use for consistency.

The gold shimmer is dazzling when sprayed onto skin and massaged in. Cathy used it on her skin and ended up with something akin of a light shimmering tan. (She and I are both super pale.) However, I’m sure it would be just as stunning on dark skin as well!

We also chose a lip and eye safe gold sparkle mica for this project so you can use it anywhere your heart desires. I hope you have fun with this recipe!

Ingredients:

4.75 oz. fractionated coconut oil
2.75 oz. clear jojoba oil
.75 oz. gold sparkle mica
.2 oz. skin safe fragrance oil, of choice

Instructions:

You’ll need a digital scale to weigh out all of the ingredients for my golden glowtion shimmer oil recipe.

Begin by weighing out the fractionated coconut oil, clear jojoba oil and a skin safe fragrance oil of your choice. Combine the ingredients in a large glass beaker or glass Pyrex measuring cup. Stir to combine.

Now weigh out the add the mica. Mix vigorously until the mica is thoroughly combined throughout the oil and there are no more clumps.

Once combined, use a funnel to fill evenly fill two 4 oz. bottle with a mist sprayer. (I used the 4 oz. Frosted PET Cosmo Round Bottles with White Fine Mist Sprayers and Brushed Aluminum Collars from SKS Bottle & Packaging found here.) Then screw on the sprayers to your bottles.

Label your golden glowtion shimmer oil bottles as desired for personal use or gifting. (I made a sticker label for mine glowtion using Egyptian clipart that I purchased from JustClipz. Then I simply printed my labels onto sticker paper, cut them out and applied them to the bottles.)

To use, vigorously shake the bottle to evenly remix the ingredients (the mica will settle) then spray onto skin and massage in.

Ingredients:

.25 oz. candelilla wax
.75 oz. babassu oil
.25 oz. fractionated coconut oil
.25 oz. Bulgarian rose floral wax
.15 oz. (eye + lip safe) coral mica
.15 oz. (eye + lip safe) copper sparkle mica

Instructions:

You will need a digital scale to weigh all of the ingredients for this plant based makeup recipe.

Begin by weighing out the candelilla wax and babassu oil into a small glass Pyrex measuring cup or similar. Heat in the microwave at 40% power until melted. Alternately you may also use a double boiler. Take care removing your melted ingredients from the microwave as the glass will be hot. I recommend using a towel or pot holder when handling.

Next, weigh out the fractionated coconut oil and rose wax. (The rose wax gives this plant based makeup recipe a beautiful light rose fragrance!) Mix these ingredients into the melted candelilla wax and babassu oil until thoroughly combined and the rose wax has melted.

Allow the mixture to cool slightly then weigh out and add the mica powders. Mix well so the mica is fully incorporated into the makeup base.

Now slowly and carefully pour your rose scented 4-in-1 beauty stick into a container or containers of your choice. I used the 1.5 oz. brown paperboard push up tubes from SKS Bottle & Packaging. (I poured mine a little too hot and it caused a hole down the center. You can avoid this by practicing patience – that I clearly don’t get a gold star in – and pouring at a cooler temperature.)

And again on a medium skin tone.

If you’d like to create your own homemade plant based makeup products to sell, then you’ll need to following FDA guidelines for labeling and permissible ingredients. You should be aware that glitter, mica-based pearlescent pigments, and other composite pigments used in cosmetics are NOT FDA approved for cosmetics at this time. The FDA however is currently exercising discretionary enforcement of these color additives while they are in discussion over regulatory status and safety. You can find further discussion on this at Marie Gale’s blog here.

For help labeling your plant based makeup, I recommend the book, Soap and Cosmetic Labeling: How to Follow the Rules and Regs Explained in Plain English, by Marie Gale.
