Tips for Hosting a Ladies Craft Night

1. Unless you and your friends are craft addicts, keep the projects you choose for your adult craft night ideas simple and easy. This way everyone can join in – even beginners to your group – without feeling like their crafting skills aren’t up to snuff. (We all started somewhere, right?)

2. Make sure to have plenty of craft materials on hand. There’s nothing worse than starting a project and then not being able to finish it.

3. Be sure to allow plenty of room for everyone to work. While a round kitchen table works great for up to four guests, I turned to my outdoor patio table for larger gatherings. A larger table also makes it easy to create a casual craft filled tablescape with all of your tools and materials. If you don’t have a table that’s big enough, try pushing two tables together so everyone can work together in the same space.

4. You’ll want to also provide drinks and refreshments for your craft night guests. Most of my friends are wine drinkers, so I like to have several bottles on hand. However, you can also make a delightful seasonal punch recipe. I also love to make a charcuterie board filled with a variety of meats and cheese, nuts and chutney. Hummus with veggies and pita chips are also always a win at a ladies craft night. Or make this amazing crowd pleasing black bean dip recipe.

I love using Wine Insiders to supply wine for my guests. They make it easy to offer a wide selection of wines to fit everyone’s tastes. Not only am I able to purchase top rated wines at a large discount, it’s also shipped straight to my door! This saves so much time (and money!) versus hunting and guessing for wines I think my friends will enjoy. If you’ve never shopped with Wine Insiders, you can save $25 off your first $50 purchase!  This is not a wine club so you simply make a purchase whenever you like. Check them out!

5. Choose make and take crafts for your adult craft nights. Everyone will have a blast creating their projects. However, it’s not much fun if they can’t take them home at the end of the night.

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed throughout the fall and winter holiday season. On top of the pressures of work and parenting, there are holiday activities to contend with. Not to mention all those holiday family obligations that we sometimes wish we didn’t have. Like you, there are days I just need a break. For the rest of the year, I’ve promised myself I will do just that.

As I tend to isolate myself more during cold weather months, part of my plan for self care is to get out of the house and socialize more. To help me find activities I know that I’ll enjoy, I’ve been keeping a steady eye on upcoming Facebook events. For events I’m interested in, I mark as “interested” so I get a reminder via Facebook a few days before. However, for events I’m kind of crazy about, they get put on my paper wall calendar. (Yes. Yes. I have one of those.) This way my favorite events won’t slip my mind.

While my final decision for Halloween activities is still up in the air, I have committed myself to several activities for October. Events like an art exhibition opening at a local gallery, music at a local restaurant, a monthly Wine & Art Wednesday, and another monthly event pegged Rooftop Riot for my BFF’s birthday.

Of course, since my boyfriend Greg goes to most of these things with me, I’m having to schedule around football. Luckily, most live bands play at restaurants with televisions. (So he can’t cop out. Bwahahaha.) He’s been a real sport about trying new things though. It can be hard to put yourself out there if you don’t a sidekick. So he keeps me honest so I don’t bail to binge on Netflix instead.

Last month Greg tagged along for Wine & Art Wednesday. It’s run by my friend, Hillary, so it’s a great opportunity not just to see my friends, but to meet new people AND get crafty. I took along some wine from my new Winc shipment (the 2016 L’Atelier du Sud Red Blend and 2017 Finke’s Sparkling White Blend, both of which were amazing!) and we spent the evening crafting our own DIY suncatchers.

While suncatchers seem like they might be seasonally specific, I think that this craft project is great for anytime of the year. This would be a great project for winter to help you overcome seasonal depression and allow a little more light into your life. Plus it’s the perfect chance to create imaginative snowflakes or winter themed flamingos for your windows!

There are several things that I really love about this DIY suncatcher craft project. One, you repurpose old or scratched CD’s for this project, so it’s not going to cost a lot of money. Two, you don’t need to be an artist to make these suncatchers. You can easily trace your favorite designs onto the cd’s. Or, you can freehand an abstract idea. And three, this DIY suncatcher craft project is amazingly therapeutic. I’d had a terrible week leading up to making these suncatchers. However, by the time Wine & Art Wednesday was over, I was in great spirits.

Ready to give this DIY suncatcher craft project a try? Following is an easy tutorial and photos from my Wednesday night to walk you through the process!

DIY Suncatcher Craft Project Tutorial

Supplies & Materials:

Blank CDs
Tape
Scissors
Permanent Markers or Paint Pens
Suncatcher Paint
Fishing Line
Colorful Beads, optional

DIY Suncatcher Craft Project Instructions:

You’ll begin by removing the painted layer from your CD.

To do this, simply place a piece of tape over the painted side of the CD with one end hanging off the edge of the CD. Lift the edge of the tape by the outer edge of the CD slightly. Then take a pair of scissors and scratch off a small amount of the coating under the outer edge of the tape.

Press the tape back down over the scratch you made. Then pull the tape away from the outer edge of the CD. That painted layer or coating will pull right off! (I never would have believed it was THIS easy!) Repeat as needed until all of the coating has been removed and you’re left with only the clear CD plastic.

Next, use a permanent marker or paint marker to draw your design onto the CD. You can either trace a design onto the CD by placing an image or mandala pattern under the CD or you can draw your own design.

Once you’ve drawn the outline for your DIY suncatcher craft project design, you can either use suncatcher paints or permanent markers to color in the design.

Allow your suncatcher to dry completely, then tie a length of fishing line through the hole in the CD so it can be displayed.

While this project is easy enough to complete solo, I highly recommend getting a friend (or friends) involved. Not because this project is difficult to do, but because it’s a great way to beat the last of those winter blues.

This past winter was tough on me. Like many of you, in addition to a small bout of seasonal depression, I was also dealing with my own set of trials and tribulations. This included moving over Christmas weekend into my best friend’s house and ending a marriage that lasted a brief six days shy of six months. While not my best moment, great friends and a terrific holistic therapist helped me through it.

One of the things that I wasn’t quite up to during this time period was crafting. So while I tried to keep up with sharing new skin care recipes on the blog, there were no DIY craft nights with the ladies through the entire winter season. Those nights are something I have truly missed. So my first DIY night this spring was needle felting for beginners.

My friend, Hillary, actually hosts a local Wine & Art Wednesday. So while I technically attended a course to learn needle felting, it was a lot like a DIY night at home with some of my favorite people. My friend and roommate, Bambi, also accompanied me and we had an absolute blast!

I’ll admit I was a bit intimidated by needle felting at first. It looked hard, and therefore I mistakenly assumed it would be hard. It wasn’t. By beginning with a DIY needle felted wine bag, it made the process of learning needle felting even easier. As you’re working with a flat, rather than a three dimensional surface, it also takes less time.

Of course, realizing this made me kind of regret giving away that needle felting kit for beginners I’d bought some time back after promising myself to learn new things. (I am now shaking my fist at my own procrastination.)

While playing with sharp objects and drinking wine was probably not the best choice, no one was hurt in the making of this project. So grab a friend or two, split the cost of materials and make your own DIY needle felted wine bags for gift giving.

Getting Started

As Wine & Art Wednesday is only a two hour class it was impossible to learn everything there is to know about needle felting in such a short time frame. Hillary covered just the bare bones basics with us.

However, I found as the night went on, I learned more about what techniques and needles did what simply by using them. So don’t feel like you need to become a book expert on needle felting for beginners prior to getting started. Besides, sometimes it’s a lot more fun to just dive right in.

Tips for Making Your DIY Needle Felted Wine Bag

Here are some basics to needle felting that will make the process of creating your DIY needle felted wine bag more enjoyable.

  • Use a stencil or cookie cutter to easily create shapes.
  • Pull the needle out of the wool in the same direction it went in to avoid breaking your needle.
  • Work around the side of your object to firm up its shape rather then from the top. Insert your needle at an angle to do this, but be sure to pull it back out at the same angle.
  • Occasionally pull your wine bag gently apart to keep the wool from sticking to the  other side or place the foam pad/cushion inside the bag rather than under it.
  • Be sure to check out these 5 common needle felting mistakes before getting started.
  • Once you get the knack of needle felting, purchase a book for more information to hone your needle felting skills.
  • Don’t be afraid to experiment. If you don’t like what you have, you can always start over. My philosophy is that a mistake is never a mistake. It’s a learning experience.
  • Use your friends for ideas. Friends are great with helping you execute your vision because they know you so well. You can also help one another out as you learn new tricks of the trade together.

Ready to craft your own DIY needle felted wine bag? Following you’ll find a list of the tools & supplies we used in Hillary’s class along with in progress photos of the needle felted wine bags that Bambi and I made!

Tools & Supplies:

Basic Needle Felting Kit
Reusable Burlap Bottle Bags
Metal Cookie Cutters in Assorted Shapes
Your Imagination!

What To Do:

Begin by deciding on a design you’d like to create for your DIY needle felted wine bag. Then choose the colors of roving wool you’d like to use. Don’t be afraid to mix and match and even blend different colors of wool together. Once you’ve decided on your design – the hardest part! – gather the materials and tools you will be using.

You’ll begin by using a smaller gauge needle to get started on your DIY needle felted wine bag. As you move through this project, you will switch over to a larger gauge needle for detail work and finishing off your pieces. A 36 gauge needle is the most commonly used, however finer wools such as merino wool may require a 38 gauge needle. (You can find a guide to felting needles here.)

Needle Felting - The Penetration Stroke (Because it's funny, dammit!)

Hillary provided us with some informational teaching materials on needle felting, including information on felting needles, during the course. We didn’t really give those more than a cursory glance, however. Hillary gave us the basics and off we went. But we did gain some amusement from them. (I know. I know. Sometimes I have the sense of humor of a twelve year old boy.)

Once you’re ready to begin, pull apart the roving wool with your hands until it’s fluffy. You can then blend several colors of wool together if you like.

Now place the wine bag on top of foam pad. Follow with the cookie cutter you’ve chosen for your first shape. Then fill the cookie cutter with the color(s) of wool you’ve chosen to use. Use a smaller gauge needle in short, stabbing up and down motions on the wool inside the cookie cutter. Continue until the wool starts to firm up and create a more solid shape.

Once you have the basic shape of the wool down, remove the cookie cutter and use a larger gauge needle on the top of the wool to felt it further. Then use the needle gently along the sides, making sure to pull the needle out the same direction it went in, to further define the edges of your shape.

You can also add wool in the same manner free hand to create your own unique elements.

Rather than fuss with the mess of carving Jack O’ Lanterns that don’t last past Halloween, this year I decided to create my own DIY painted pumpkins! I even hosted a pumpkin paint night for me and my friends. I thought everyone came up with some really fantastic ideas for painting their pumpkins. And not only are these DIY painted pumpkins perfect for Halloween, but they can also be brought indoors for a seasonal fall table centerpiece!

Hosting your own pumpkin paint night is a snap. I simply provided boxed wines, snacks, paints and craft supplies while my guests brought their own paper mache pumpkins. If you don’t already have an arsenal of craft supplies on hand, you could also request that each guest bring a small container of paint and/or their own brushes in addition to the pumpkin of their choice. A pumpkin paint night is also a great idea as an alternate adult or teen Halloween party!

And not only are these DIY painted pumpkins perfect for Halloween, but they can also be brought indoors for a seasonal fall table centerpiece! #pumpkins #diy #fall #halloween

Following are some of the highlights from my pumpkin paint night I hosted last week when my friends and I created our own DIY painted pumpkins. But don’t forget to read to the end to see how you can recreate my sparkle painted pumpkin – plus more fall craft ideas!

Everyone that attended had their own fantastic ideas for how to paint their pumpkins.

Whitney added orange and black stripes to her pumpkin while Allison created a bright and cheery teal and white pumpkin with pink glitter swirls and yellow accents. (Allison’s husband was in attendance too, however he worked on painting a t-shirt as a part of his Halloween costume.)

She also painted a wooden “poison” Halloween sign.

And I, of course, painted a sparkly glitter themed pumpkin! Here’s how it was done.

DIY Painted Pumpkins with Glitter

© Rebecca Dawn Dillon

Materials & Supplies:

Paper mache pumpkin
Teal & lime green paint
Matte Mod Podge
Foam brushes
Krylon Glitter Shimmer Spray
Strong craft paint
Glitters
Ribbons

Instructions:

Cover your work surface with newspaper or a paper towel to protect it from paint. Then, using a foam brush, apply teal paint to the entire body of the pumpkin minus the stem. Allow the first coat of paint to dry completely then apply a second coat.

Once dried, use a foam brush to randomly apply Mod Podge to a front section of the pumpkin. Then sprinkle blue and green glitter onto the wet Mod Podge.

Once the Mod Podge dries, use a strong craft glue – I used E6000 craft adhesive – to glue a scrapbook chipboard phrase of your choice onto and across the front of the pumpkin.

Next, paint the stem of your pumpkin green. Then, while the paint is still wet, gently blow blue glitter into the wet paint on the pumpkin stem. Once dry, finish your pumpkin with 2-3 coats as desired of perfectly pink Krylon glitter shimmer spray.

Finally tie teal and green ribbons onto your painted pumpkin’s stem. I used long pieces of ribbon and tied the two ribbons together into a bow twice. Then I tied the leftover long ribbon ends into a bow again but this time I tied the teal and green ribbons into bows separately.

Without a regular wine & cheese night it’s possible my sanity would go flying out the window. I mean who couldn’t use a night out with the girls, some wine, a fab cheese board and some crafty DIY projects or card games?

You'll love these fresh fun ideas for making your party pop! Must Have Wine & Cheese Night Party Essentials! Everything from stemless wine glasses and cheese boards, to the perfect wines and wine markers! Plus the new must join monthly wine membership program!

Since I love to host I’ve slowly been filling up my sideboard and bar cart and decorating my conversation space with all the comforts a girl needs. And, to save on time and a trip to the store, I joined a new monthly wine club membership called Winc.

Winc! The amazing new monthly wine club! Winc not only saves me the hassle of guessing which wines I may or may not like by making recommendations based on my profile and how I rate the wines I receive, but I can also swap out any  or all of the wines they've chosen for me with my own picks. Bottles start at just $13 with free shipping when you buy four, and I can pause or cancel my monthly membership at any time.

So not only do I feel better about my wine selections from Winc than I do about randomly trying a new mystery wine I picked up at the grocery store, I’m always able to have wine on hand for guests that I can feel good about! With the wine handled the rest is just cake. (If you’d like to sign up for Winc, you’ll get $20 off your first purchase! Simply join here.)

This extra large cheese board from Red Maple Run is perfect for hosting large parties during the holidays, special events or simply a girls only wine & cheese night!

The Cheese Board.

This extra large oak cheese board from Red Maple Run is perfect for hosting large parties during the holidays, special events or simply a girls only wine & cheese night! I also love the gold rimmed agate cheese boards from Wynn + Whiskey.

These hand stamped cheese markers from Vintage Garden Art are a must have wine & cheese night party essential!

Cheese markers are another must have accessory for your wine & cheese night. Knowing which cheese is what means less time reviewing the cheeses and more time enjoying the night! I’m extra fond of these hand stamped cheese markers from Vintage Garden Art. These fun and timeless cheese markers are made from silver plated vintage flatware that has been hand cut, filed, stamped and tumbled.

I also really like the handmade ceramic cheese markers from Wishing Star Pottery as well as the chalkboard inspired black clay cheese markers from Manuel Marino Ceramic.

These hand blown stemless wine glasses from Miss Mac Glass are must haves for your next wine & cheese night!

Pour Another Glass.

These hand blown stemless wine glasses from Miss Mac Glass are must haves for your next wine & cheese night! With a blended design between a highball and a modern stemless wine glass, each of these artisan stemless wine glasses offers a little extra weight in the bottom so it’s comfortable to hold.

Another great option is a set of stainless steel wine glasses. Not only will these wine glass not break like glass can, but this gold colored glasses also offer performance vacuum insulation to keep your drink cool. Pair them with beautiful slip on or magnetic stemless wine glass markers and you won’t have to worry about guests forgetting which glass is theirs!

Bar Cart Beauties.

A bar cart is an easy way to not only add extra storage space, but it also makes it easy to transport everything you need for your wine & cheese night to the same space that the festivities are taking place in. I have this rose gold metal, glass and leather bar cart that I purchased from Target this year.

Industrial Bar Cart! I love this this brilliantly designed industrial bar cart from Fry By Design that offers three storage levels and a hanging wine glass rack.

But I’m also quite fond of this brilliantly designed industrial bar cart from Fry By Design that offers three storage levels and a hanging wine glass rack.

If you’re looking for a vintage inspired bar cart, then definitely consider the Annie Bar Cart from Inspire Q. This glam bar cart evokes the Art Deco era with its bold finish and a hardware. Plus it has a holder for three bottle of your favorite wine! Alternately, the Silverwood Bar Cart comes in a hammered bronze finish and also offers two tiers of storage as well as dedicated wine holders.

The Wine.

While Winc has me covered in the wine department, if you’re already at the store browsing for cheese selections, I highly recommend Three Thieves Pinot Grigio. It’s light and refreshing and at just $10 a bottle the price is right. If you prefer a sweeter white wine, Schmitt Sohne Riesling is also good and equally budget worthy.

My friend, Bambi, recommends the Matua Sauvignon Blanc if you prefer a drier white or for reds the Alamos Malbec and the Bogle Cabernet Sauvignon. While my friend, Hillary, is currently digging the Fitch Pinot Noir, Villa Appalachia Corvina Reserve 2010 (out of Floyd, VA paired with gorgonzola cheese), Open Kimono Sauvignon Blanc, and the Fincastle Cabernet Franc 2010.

These easy DIY coasters are a great project for a DIY Girls Only Craft Night! Not only will you get in some awesome adult time making your own functional and fabulous custom DIY coasters that your husband will never remember to use!

If you’re looking for an easy and fun DIY to pair with your wine & cheese night, be sure to check out my post for creating DIY coasters for a make and take craft night! Or discover more great DIY ideas on my Pinterest boards.
