While this project is easy enough to complete solo, I highly recommend getting a friend (or friends) involved. Not because this project is difficult to do, but because it’s a great way to beat the last of those winter blues.

This past winter was tough on me. Like many of you, in addition to a small bout of seasonal depression, I was also dealing with my own set of trials and tribulations. This included moving over Christmas weekend into my best friend’s house and ending a marriage that lasted a brief six days shy of six months. While not my best moment, great friends and a terrific holistic therapist helped me through it.

One of the things that I wasn’t quite up to during this time period was crafting. So while I tried to keep up with sharing new skin care recipes on the blog, there were no DIY craft nights with the ladies through the entire winter season. Those nights are something I have truly missed. So my first DIY night this spring was needle felting for beginners.

My friend, Hillary, actually hosts a local Wine & Art Wednesday. So while I technically attended a course to learn needle felting, it was a lot like a DIY night at home with some of my favorite people. My friend and roommate, Bambi, also accompanied me and we had an absolute blast!

I’ll admit I was a bit intimidated by needle felting at first. It looked hard, and therefore I mistakenly assumed it would be hard. It wasn’t. By beginning with a DIY needle felted wine bag, it made the process of learning needle felting even easier. As you’re working with a flat, rather than a three dimensional surface, it also takes less time.

Of course, realizing this made me kind of regret giving away that needle felting kit for beginners I’d bought some time back after promising myself to learn new things. (I am now shaking my fist at my own procrastination.)

While playing with sharp objects and drinking wine was probably not the best choice, no one was hurt in the making of this project. So grab a friend or two, split the cost of materials and make your own DIY needle felted wine bags for gift giving.

Getting Started

As Wine & Art Wednesday is only a two hour class it was impossible to learn everything there is to know about needle felting in such a short time frame. Hillary covered just the bare bones basics with us.

However, I found as the night went on, I learned more about what techniques and needles did what simply by using them. So don’t feel like you need to become a book expert on needle felting for beginners prior to getting started. Besides, sometimes it’s a lot more fun to just dive right in.

Tips for Making Your DIY Needle Felted Wine Bag

Here are some basics to needle felting that will make the process of creating your DIY needle felted wine bag more enjoyable.

  • Use a stencil or cookie cutter to easily create shapes.
  • Pull the needle out of the wool in the same direction it went in to avoid breaking your needle.
  • Work around the side of your object to firm up its shape rather then from the top. Insert your needle at an angle to do this, but be sure to pull it back out at the same angle.
  • Occasionally pull your wine bag gently apart to keep the wool from sticking to the  other side or place the foam pad/cushion inside the bag rather than under it.
  • Be sure to check out these 5 common needle felting mistakes before getting started.
  • Once you get the knack of needle felting, purchase a book for more information to hone your needle felting skills.
  • Don’t be afraid to experiment. If you don’t like what you have, you can always start over. My philosophy is that a mistake is never a mistake. It’s a learning experience.
  • Use your friends for ideas. Friends are great with helping you execute your vision because they know you so well. You can also help one another out as you learn new tricks of the trade together.

Your Imagination!

What To Do:

Begin by deciding on a design you’d like to create for your DIY needle felted wine bag. Then choose the colors of roving wool you’d like to use. Don’t be afraid to mix and match and even blend different colors of wool together. Once you’ve decided on your design – the hardest part! – gather the materials and tools you will be using.

You’ll begin by using a smaller gauge needle to get started on your DIY needle felted wine bag. As you move through this project, you will switch over to a larger gauge needle for detail work and finishing off your pieces. A 36 gauge needle is the most commonly used, however finer wools such as merino wool may require a 38 gauge needle. (You can find a guide to felting needles here.)

Needle Felting - The Penetration Stroke (Because it's funny, dammit!)

Hillary provided us with some informational teaching materials on needle felting, including information on felting needles, during the course. We didn’t really give those more than a cursory glance, however. Hillary gave us the basics and off we went. But we did gain some amusement from them. (I know. I know. Sometimes I have the sense of humor of a twelve year old boy.)

Once you’re ready to begin, pull apart the roving wool with your hands until it’s fluffy. You can then blend several colors of wool together if you like.

Now place the wine bag on top of foam pad. Follow with the cookie cutter you’ve chosen for your first shape. Then fill the cookie cutter with the color(s) of wool you’ve chosen to use. Use a smaller gauge needle in short, stabbing up and down motions on the wool inside the cookie cutter. Continue until the wool starts to firm up and create a more solid shape.

Once you have the basic shape of the wool down, remove the cookie cutter and use a larger gauge needle on the top of the wool to felt it further. Then use the needle gently along the sides, making sure to pull the needle out the same direction it went in, to further define the edges of your shape.

You can also add wool in the same manner free hand to create your own unique elements.

That’s really all there is to it! Keep adding to your design as desired until you’re satisfied with your DIY needle felted wine bag. Then it’s ready for gift giving!

Making your own DIY Halloween tombstones is both easy and fun. And because this project doesn't require any technical skill, the whole family can join in on the fun!

As a new step-mother I am freshly reminded of how much waste a family of four can make. And while my city has a recycling program, I love that this project utilizes common cereal boxes and turns them into lasting outdoor Halloween decorations. Not only is it nice to create something lasting from trash out of the recycle bin, but hopefully this project will also inspire your own creativity by encouraging you to find new ways to make use of craft materials you may ordinarily toss out.

What You’ll Need (for Each Tombstone):

large cereal box
Krylon Natural Stone Decorative Aerosol, Granite Finish
Tim Holtz block Upper Cling Foam Stamps, optional
craft paints
craft glitter, optional
clear outdoor sealer
liner paint brush
masking tape
two 12″ wood skewers
strong craft glue
pen or marker
scissors

What to Do:

Begin by cutting off the top front and back flaps of your cereal box. These are basically the flaps you use to close the box. Make sure to leave the side flaps intact.

Next, using a pen or marker, draw a half circle about 1-2″ down from the top of the box on the front of the cereal box. It should form a tombstone shape when it meets the edges of the box. (Be sure to draw the line so that when the sides of the box are rounded over the top of the tombstone, they meet or overlap in the middle.)

Carefully cut off the top front portion of the cereal box along and above the line you just drew.

Making your own DIY Halloween tombstones is both easy and fun. And because this project doesn't require any technical skill, the whole family can join in on the fun!

Save the portion of the box you cut off the front so you can trace it onto the back of the box. Then cut off the top back of the cereal box.

Now round the sides over the curved edges of the box you just cut until they meet in the middle.

Then tape the sides of the box down onto the edges of the tombstone shape you cut.

Follow with more tape, taping the sides of the box all the way around the curved tombstone top.

Now carefully open the bottom flap of the cereal box. Cut two lines vertical lines on either side of the back bottom flap. Then cut two more small horizontal lines off each of the vertical lines you just cut and fold the flaps you created over. Now cut a small square out at the top of each flap, just big enough for your skewers to fit through.

Place your wooden skewers inside the cereal box and tape them in. Then close and tape the bottom of the box up with the skewers sticking out. Reinforce with more tape as needed.

Now spray paint your tombstone on all sides using the decorative stone spray paint. Once the first coat dries, apply a second coat. Spray excess paint in some areas, then use dried leaves or paper or even your fingertips to distress the paint so it looks like weathered, chipped stone.

Apply additional paint as needed once the second layer dries if desired.

Once the decorative stone spray paint has fully dried, you are ready to add details to your DIY Halloween tombstones. To do this, use a strong craft glue on your foam letters in your desired message. (I used E6000 craft adhesive.)

Then use craft paint to add details to the lettering as well as to paint a border along the front edge. I found a liner brush and black paint worked great for this.

Now lightly brush on red accent paint as desired. In addition to using a brush for this step, I also used my fingertip to apply additional paint in areas.

Next, lightly sprinkle glitter into the wet paint as desired. (I used iridescent and red glitters for this step.) Blow off any excess glitter you don’t want.

Finally, spray on a layer or two of clear outdoor sealer. This will help to not only protect the craft paint you added, but also help keep the glitter in place. Once you’ve made your DIY Halloween tombstones, all that’s left is to display them!

To do this, simply insert the skewers into the ground to hold the tombstones in place. Use your fingers to push the skewers into the ground as far as you can as pushing on the top of the tombstone can cause the skewers to come loose inside.

You can then add leaves and even Halloween lights and spiderwebs around the tombstones as desired to set the scene.

Begin by crumpling up aluminum foil into an apple or pumpkin shape in the size you’d like your pumpkin jar topper to be.

Once you are satisfied with the basic shape, knead your polymer clay until it’s soft and pliable. Next, roll out a large circle of clay, about 1/4″ thick.

Next, shape 1/4″ thick clay around the outside lid to your jar. Create a slight indentation in the clay for your pumpkin to rest in.

Leaving the clay attached to the jar lid, bake the lid and the pumpkin together in a 275°F oven for about 15 minutes on a baking sheet. Then remove from the oven and allow it to cool.

Kitchen Table Makeover (Or rather, how I brightened up my drab kitchen!)

Brighten up your drab kitchen with a bright, beautiful kitchen table makeover! The great part about updating your old furniture is that not only is it a lot a less expensive than buying new furniture, it’s also a great way to express your own personal style.

As my current kitchen is rather small and dark, even with a picture window, I was able to brighten up the entire room by just painting the top of my kitchen table in bright and sunny colors. Keep reading to see the transformation and to learn more about my process!

The Story Behind the Table

So basically I was starting with my husband’s hand-me-down kitchen table. It’s a basic black dinette table with a set of four chairs that barely squeezes into our eat-in kitchen. When we got married in May and I moved back to Roanoke and into my husband’s house, the finish on the table was already damaged. It no longer shined like the chairs and the rest of table and the finish looked “patchy.”

Having it in my head that I was going to paint the table top at some point anyway, I took advantage of the kitchen table as a craft table. Between one rather somewhat therapeutic craft night with my friend Bambi in which the start of repainting the top somehow turned into it looking like it was covered in mud, and then the spilling of fragrance oils and nail polish base on others, I ended up leaving it more wrecked than it started out. (You can see a somewhat frightening retelling of part of that saga here.)

So last Wednesday afternoon, being somewhat burnt out with bath and body projects, I dug out my collection of craft paints I keep on hand for DIY craft nights and went to town. In retrospect, I probably should have primed the table first. But once I had started I wasn’t going back. Luckily the paint seems to have stuck rather well. Following is a photo retelling of my kitchen table makeover.

Once I finished painting my table, I sealed it with multiple thin coats of a Devine Color by Valspar Clear Sealer Topcoat that I picked up at Target. (They do also sell a paint and primer that bonds to wood, metal, glass, plastic and other surfaces.) Its luxe glossy finish both seals and protects and I felt it also gave my finished kitchen table that extra pop.

My bright and sunny kitchen table makeover was inspired by the work of artist, Hillary Hardison!

Incidentally, the colors for my kitchen table makeover were inspired by a wax painting titled, Wanderer 2, that I purchased from my friend Hillary Hardison. Previously employed by our local art museum, the Taubman Museum of Art, Hillary has since ventured into self employment as a full time artist.

Additionally, she has plans for a once monthly paint night in the works for about half the price of established paint nights. The focus is less on structure and more about interacting and having fun while creating. (Kind of like my DIY crafts nights!) She will also be teaching structured three-hour art workshops on weekends if you’d like to learn a new skill.

If you like Hillary’s artwork you can discover more via her booth at the Aurora Studio Center on Campbell Avenue in downtown Roanoke, VA. Alternately, you can view and sign up for Hillary’s workshops here.

Anyhow, if you’re thinking of repainting some of furniture in your home, be sure to check out this tutorial on how to paint furniture (the right way and not how Rebecca did it) at Centsational Style blog here before getting started. Not only does it cover proper priming, but there’s also information on sanding, filling holes and gouges, and choosing the right paint brush for the job.

And, if you do decide to makeover a piece of furniture in your home, I’d LOVE to see it! Simply share it with the hashtag #soapdelishowoff on instagram so I don’t miss it!
