And because it’s a faux terrarium you never have to worry about it dying! Keep reading to learn how.

This easy no maintenance DIY terrarium is not only a snap to make, but it's also great for gifting! And because it's a faux DIY terrarium it will never die!Faux DIY Terrarium

What you’ll need:

8 dram glass vials with a black phenolic cone lined cap (one for each terrarium)
small rocks, pebbles and/or stone white gravel
preserved chartreuse reindeer moss
craft miniature mushrooms from the floral department or similar
Jim Holtz idea-ology tag labels
tweezers or a pencil
baker’s twine
scissors

This easy no maintenance DIY terrarium is not only a snap to make, but it's also great for gifting! And because it's a faux DIY terrarium it will never die!

What to do:

Begin by twisting the ends of the two mushrooms together and up so they sit the desired height in the glass vial when placed inside.

Place a few small pebbles or stones in the bottom of the vial. Now add the mushrooms to the vial so the center of the stems are surrounded by the first layer of rocks. You can use tweezers to help you to position the mushrooms properly.

Now add some stone white gravel to the vial so it falls around the stems of the mushrooms. Add to desired height.

Next add some sand to the vial to suit.

Using your tweezers, add the reindeer moss to the vial. Position it around the mushrooms so the stems are no longer visible and the mushrooms appear to be growing out of the moss.

Finally, screw the lid onto your glass vial and the tag by tying it around the neck of the bottle with baker’s twine. And voilà, you’re done!

Note: You can buy these awesome little vials by the case at SKS Bottle & Packaging to easily make these a more cost effective DIY wedding favor gift or for bulk holiday stocking stuffer gifts. Don’t feel limited by the mushrooms and rocks though! You can customize your DIY terrariums in so many ways. Try using tiny fairies and glitter and stars for girls or any other exciting combination of materials.

You can also make these into magnets by using E6000 to glue a 1/4 x 1/16 neodymium magnet (also known as a rare earth magnet) to the back of each terrarium.

How to Make Homemade Soap Last Longer + a DIY Soap Dish

Proper drainage is key to getting your soaps to last longer! Learn how to make this minimalist DIY wooden soap dish to help you get the most out of your homemade soaps.

The key to make homemade soap last longer is proper drainage. The one thing your homemade soaps should never do is sit in a pool of water. A soap dish that allows proper drainage – like this minimalist DIY wooden soap dish via How Did You  Make This? – is an easy way to help ensure your soap drains properly and dries in between uses. (Re-pin this project here for later!)

Harder soaps also last longer than softer soaps. Therefore giving your homemade soaps a longer cure time can help your soap last longer as it inevitable results in a harder bar. You can also cut your homemade soaps in half so they are able to dry more quickly and thoroughly between uses.

Have a homemade soap that just doesn’t seem to get hard enough? Cure soft soap issues by changing your homemade soap recipes from the start. Using oils that create a harder bar from the get go will ensure a harder finished bar. There are many soapmaking ingredients that help to create a hard bar including shea and cocoa butters – or any butter for that matter – babassu oil, palm oil, palm kernel oil or flakes, lard (tallow), and coconut oil. (Using the soap calculator at soapcalc can help you determine the hardness of the final bar.)

Other ingredients like salt, stearic acid and sodium lactate – at around 1 teaspoon per pound of oils – will also result in a harder soap. You can also use a water discount to start out with a harder soap coming out of the mold. I always discount my water at 33% or slightly less for soaps I know tend to be softer when unmolding them.

Ingredients:

3.1 oz. natural soy wax
.31 oz lemon verbena mint fragrance oil

Tools:

medium wooden wick
large glass Pyrex measuring cup
4 oz. quilted Ball jelly jar
digital scale
microwave
scissors

Instructions:

This DIY lemon verbena candle recipe makes one candle. Double as required to make multiple candles at once for homemade stocking stuffers or DIY wedding favors.

Using a digital scale weigh out the soy wax. Place into a glass Pyrex measuring cup and heat in the microwave at reduced power (60%) until melted. (Alternately you can use a double boiler.) Carefully remove the melted wax from the microwave using a tea towel or pot holder as the glass will be hot.

Now weigh out and stir in the fragrance oil.

Prepare you wick by cutting the wooden wick to fit inside the jelly jar when place inside the steel tab. Dip the steel tab with the wick in place into the melted wax then set it in the center of the jar. The wax will hold the wick in place.

Allow the wax to cool. When it starts to look cloudy you’re ready to pour the wax. Slowly pour it into the jelly jar around the wick. Allow to harden at room temperature.

To use trim wick to 1/4″ and light. Wait 24 hours before lighting the candle for best results.

Homemade Lemon Verbena Body Butter Recipe

 © Rebecca’s Soap Delicatessen

Ingredients:

3 oz. refined shea butter
.25 oz. refined/deodorized cocoa butter
.2 oz. hemp seed oil
.1 oz. lanolin
.1 oz. Cyclomethicone
.05 oz. arrowroot powder
.1 oz. lemon verbena mint fragrance oil
1ml vitamin E oil
pinch 24k Gold Sparkle Loose Mica Pigment Powder, optional

Instructions:

Cyclomethicone gives this body butter a smooth, silky feel. Combined with the arrowroot powder these ingredients keep this body butter from feeling greasy when applied. You can substitute the refined butters for unrefined shea butter and cocoa butter but it may impact the smoothness and/or fragrance of the final product depending on where you source your ingredients.

This lemon verbena body butter recipe yields one 4 oz. container and will weigh around 3.8 oz. You can easily double or triple this recipe to make more than one lemon verbena body butter at a time.

Begin by using a digital kitchen scale to weigh out the shea and cocoa butters. Combine in a large glass Pyrex measuring cup and heat at reduced power until fully melted.

Weigh out the arrowroot powder and stir into the butters until it has dissolved. (You can sub the arrowroot powder for tapioca starch if desired.)

Now weigh out the lanolin and stir into the melted butters until it has liquified.

Next weigh out and stir in the hemp seed oil, lemon verbena mint fragrance oil and Cyclomethicone. Follow with the vitamin E oil using a graduated plastic transfer pipette to measure out this  ingredient. Mix well.

Allow the body butter to start to solidify. This may take some time. You can speed up this process by placing the body butter in the fridge. Once it starts to become opaque mix well a second time to evenly distribute any mica that may have settled to the bottom. You can use a stick blender if needed to combine thoroughly.

Now pour the body butter into a 4 oz. jelly jar. Use a spatula to scrape out any extra body butter from the measuring cup into your final container. Allow the body butter to finish thickening up then add the lid and screw on the canning jar band.

To use simply scoop out a small amount and rub onto skin as desired. Keep in mind that less is more. A little goes a long way and using too much will take the product longer to absorb.

Now pair this non-greasy lemon verbena body butter with a lemon verbena candle for the perfect homemade gift!

This easy DIY Christmas Room Spray recipe boasts the fresh, deodorizing fragrance of rosemary and fir needle!

Also pictured with this exciting lemon verbena duo is my Rosemary & Fir Tree Room Spray. You can find that recipe here. You can easily swap the essential oils in the recipe with 2.5-3 ml of your lemon verbena mint fragrance oil for an entire matching fragrance set!

This homemade cranberry body butter recipes makes a wonderful homemade Christmas gift idea!
