DIY Lavender Body Butter with Neem Oil

This DIY lavender body butter with neem oil not only offers amazing skin protection and moisture, but it also helps to soothe shingles pain – phantom or otherwise. How do I know this? Because last Christmas I ended up with shingles. And I’m not elderly or immunocompromised. What I did have though, was a heck of a lot of stress.

I honestly had considering writing a blog post about how not to get shingles over the holidays. Sort, of a soapmaker’s guide with quips and puns that relate back to our quirky habits. Some of which could lead to an unfortunate virus uprising.

Through various soapmaking groups I’ve learned that quite a few of us do our shopping for ingredients and supplies while intoxicated on a wee bit of wine. This inevitably means we spend more. And anyone who drinks alcohol semi-regularly can become B6 deficient. I know that a B6 deficiency is one of the underlying causes of a shingles outbreak. Because after a visit to the doctor they recommended I take 50mg of vitamin B6 twice a day for two months.

I also know that overspending can cause us stress. I mean, if it didn’t, there wouldn’t be all of those memes with the UPS guy and that note requesting he hold your packages until later should your husband happen to be home. Sure overspending or lack of money can be stressful. But a husband who is disappointed in you – that can be worse. And everyone knows one of the leading causes of breakups and divorce are money problems. And fights or break ups, well they’re going to be stressful too.

So my best advice for you right now is to – well, obviously don’t stop drinking wine. Then we’d go batty for sure. But do be sure to keep your levels of B6 up during the entire holiday season. High amounts of B6 is found in foods like red meat and cashews. But supplements also do the trick.

In addition, I also highly recommend having your soapmaking supplies sent to a friend or neighbor’s house – even your place of employment if you don’t work from home. I mean it’s not really even a deception. You’re simply having those much needed supplies delivered elsewhere for safety reasons. A lot of packages do go missing this time of year. That he happened to miss seeing the orders coming or being unpacked, well, he probably just wasn’t paying attention. I mean there are plenty of other things men fail to notice on a daily basis when it comes to women. Or they simply forget. Or weren’t really listening to begin with.

But I digress. I first made a version of my DIY lavender body butter for my grandmother three years ago. Her all time favorite scent is lavender. And seeing as how its common for most of us to suffer from dry skin this time of year I thought a body butter was in order.

Why Use a DIY Lavender Body Butter?

At that time I had just started experimenting a lot with neem oil. Long used in both Ayurvedic and Unani medicine, neem oil possesses powerful natural anti-inflammatory and analgesic (pain killing) properties. It’s often used topically to ease the symptoms of rheumatism, eczema, ringworm, athlete’s foot, cold sores, psoriasis, warts, chronic syphilitic sores, infected burn wounds, and slow-healing skin ulcers. Additionally it has also been shown to help control various skin infections including scabies and candida.

On the other hand, lavender essential oil also possesses anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties when used in skin care applications. As such it can help to ease pain, promote the healing of cuts and burns as well as reduce swelling and redness. When properly diluted, lavender essential oil eases everything from sore muscles, joint pain and rheumatism to sprains and backaches.

Little did I know that the combination of neem oil and lavender essential oil in my DIY lavender body butter would help to reduce my grandmother’s recurring phantom pain from shingles in addition to soothing and moisturizing dry, itchy skin. But that it did. So when I developed shingles the day after Christmas last year, I whipped up a batch for myself. During the onset of my shingles it certainly didn’t take the pain away completely. But it really helped to ease the pain so it was more bearable.

I also found that applying heat went a long way towards helping ease the pain from shingles as well. So I used a heating pad during the actual breakout in addition to an ungodly amount of ibuprofen. Then, once there was no longer a mess of oozing gross blisters (for those of you who can remember having chicken pox – I was four and at best I remember one colloidal oatmeal bath and being told not to scratch) I used a combination of equal parts lavender, ginger and chili seed essential oils to warm my skin, increase circulation, ease pain and reduce inflammation. It also offered a lot of relief with the recurring phantom pain I experienced for about six months after the shingles had cleared up.

Following is the recipe for my DIY lavender body butter of awesome. Not only does it offer some amazing skin care benefits, but it’s also non-greasy. I hope you like the recipe. But what I really really hope, is that you never get shingles.

(One of my best friends and a recent breast cancer survivor just got shingles in her EAR! Yes. Her ear. It was not awesome and harder to treat. She also couldn’t hear out of that ear for about a week. While not a soapmaker, she is a jewelry artist and fellow wine drinker. She’s also going through a divorce so there’s no husband to worry her. However the advice on the B6 still stands.)

3 oz. refined shea butter
.25 oz. refined/deodorized cocoa butter
.2 oz. baobab oil
.1 oz. lanolin
.1 oz. Cyclomethicone
.05 oz. arrowroot powder
.1 oz. lavender essential oil
1 ml pure 100% neem oil
1ml vitamin E oil
mica powder, to suit (for color if desired)

Instructions:

This recipe yields one 4 oz. container of my DIY lavender body butter with neem oil. You can easily double the recipe as needed to make extras for gifting.

Begin by using a reliable digital scale to weigh out the shea and cocoa butters. Combine in a large glass Pyrex measuring cup and heat at 30% power until fully melted. (Alternately, you may also use a double boiler.)

Then weigh out the arrowroot powder and stir into the melted butters until the arrowroot powder has dissolved.

Next, weigh out the lanolin. Then stir into the liquified butters until melted.

Now weigh out and stir in the baobab oil, lavender essential oil and Cyclomethicone. Follow with the vitamin E and neem oils, using a fresh graduated plastic pipette for each to measure out and add these ingredients. Add a pinch or two of mica powder in your color of choice if desired, then mix well.

Pour your DIY lavender body butter into a 4 oz. container of your choice or into two 2 oz. glass jars. (Pictured is a 2.3 oz. clear glass thick wall cosmetic jar from SKS Bottle & Packaging.) Then allow to solidify.

You can place your lavender body butter in the refrigerator to speed up the cooling process. (When it’s warm out it tends to take a lot longer for this body butter to solidify if left on a kitchen countertop.)

To use simply apply a small amount to skin as desired and massage in.

Instructions:

To make these DIY bundt cake salt scrub wedding favors, begin by using a digital scale to weigh out the kokum butter and shea butter. Combine in a large glass Pyrex measuring cup, then heat in the microwave at 30% power until melted. Alternately you can also use a double boiler.

Remove from heat, then weigh out and stir in the jojoba oil.

Next, using a graduated transfer pipette, measure out the polysorbate 80 as well as the fragrance oil and stir into the wet ingredients.

In a separate container, weigh out the Epsom salt. Now use a measuring spoon to measure out the mica powder and the turquoise glitter and mix into the salt until thoroughly combined.

Pour the colored salt into the wet ingredients and mix well with a fork until both salt and color are even throughout the wet salt scrub base.

Place the container filled with your salt scrub either in the refrigerator or freezer just until it starts to thicken up and the salt stays suspended when remixed.

Mix the salt scrub again, then fill the cavities a mini bundt cake pan of your choice with a cavity diameter of between 1.5″ and 1.75″. (The mini bundt pan mold I used had cavities with a diameter of 1.75″ each. This recipe made eight solid bundt cake salt scrubs.)

Allow the salt scrubs to fully harden then remove from the mold. Then place them on a small plate or cutting board and put them in the freezer.

Now cut an ounce or two of white melt and pour base into chunks and combine in a small scientific glass beaker. Heat in 10-15 second increments in the microwave until melted, then set aside to cool slightly.

When the soap base has thickened slightly but is still pourable, remove the solid bundt cake salt scrubs from the freezer. Mix a small amount of silver glitter into the base, then pour the soap base across the tops of the salt scrubs in several directions so it looks like icing. (If the soap sinks into the salt scrubs, stop, refreeze the scrubs and let the soap cool off further.)

If desired, you can also dust the tops of the solid salt scrubs with additional glitter to suit.

Carefully run a knife under your salt scrubs to remove them from the cutting board.

Then package your solid bundt cake salt scrub wedding favors by placing each one in a mini acrylic cake stand with a lid. (You can purchase mini cake stands along with other packaging materials for your wedding favors from beaucoop.) If desired tie a ribbon and tag around the top of the lid.

To use, simply massage onto damp skin in the shower or bath, then rinse and pat dry.

Are your kids driving you crazy? Retreat into some quiet time for yourself with this collection of 12 DIY kids craft projects for when you've hit your limit! (Plus a rockin' printable chore chart with a rewards system for crafty prizes!)

We’ve all been there. The weather’s been crap for days. The kids are going stir crazy and you, well you’re trying to contain yourself so you don’t scream at anyone and come off as a raving lunatic. As someone who has already raised a child to adulthood AND seen him off to college, becoming a new stepmother in May admittedly came with a new set of challenges.

Granted my son turned out better than I could have ever hoped and I’m incredibly proud of both him and his accomplishments. However, he was one kid. I now have three more. Two we have on a 50-50 split and a third accompanies those two every other weekend. So I basically went from being a quite content empty nester to dealing with kid overload in an instant. And when your parenting skills are a lot different than what they expect and are used to, well. It becomes a learning experience for the entire family.

However, before I share with you one of the ways I dealt with recurring issues I had with the kids, I first want to share a collection of my favorite kids craft projects to keep them entertained WITHOUT television so you can get that break from chaos that you need.

Now that I’ve (hopefully) inspired you with some of my favorite kids craft projects, why not also us them as incentives for good behavior? (And give them a break from all that screen time overload.)

As I stated previously, zero to three kids within a two week time frame was, well, insightful. At some point I just hit pure exhaustion. Not only was I starting to feel like everyone’s maid, but there was the mouse incident.

The kids aren’t allowed to have food in their rooms for obvious reasons. And as it turned out, one child had forgotten about chocolate under her bed, while another had hidden plates of food in her hideaway bed. We got mice. And by the time we finally discovered all of the hidden food, the mouse incident was more like an infestation. As cute as they were, those little rodents kept growing. And then they started multiplying.

Unfortunately, it took us a while to get rid of all the resident mice. So I’m still checking their favorite spots weekly to make sure new mice aren’t moving in partially out of paranoia. And thus my chore chart system was initiated. My husband, well, he had his doubts at first. (It’s a guy thing, right?) But after several weeks we were in agreement that it really has made some positive changes within our new mixed family.

Kids Chore Chart Idea with Kids Craft Projects from a Prize Box as an incentive to go above and beyond and to help them explore their creativity.

For the Love of Chore Charts

The goal of my chore charts was to gear them toward an introduction into real life once they’re out in the world and getting jobs of their own. It requires they do a minimum number of chores on a point system. If they meet the seven day point requirement then they did their job. If they fall short, they lose television and internet privileges the following weekend. However, if they go above and beyond, there are rewards. It also teaches them responsibility, respect for their space and that of others and it helps us all work together toward common goals. The prizes then encourage their creativity in the form of kids craft projects. (Not to mention they’re developing better habits so it all seems less like work to them moving forward.)

The minimum number of points each child needs over a two week period (in which we have them for seven days) is 25 points. This leaves room to skip or forget a few things. (I mean, I’m not Cruella.) They can then do bonus chores to earn bonus points if they slip or to reach the reward goal of 30 points.

Kids Chore Chart Idea with Kids Craft Projects from a Prize Box as an incentive to go above and beyond and to help them explore their creativity.

30 points is where it gets crafty. Literally. Because I basically created a prize box for 30 points. It’s filled with $5 options that include craft kits and supplies, stickers, treats or winner’s choice for a family game night – even their choice of an after dinner dessert. There’s also the option of a big box pass. Choosing two passes from the small box allows them to then choose a prize out of the big box. Big box prizes include cool kids craft projects around $10-$15 (I found a lot of these on sale or purchased them with 50% off coupons) like a wood burning kit with a tv tray and a tie-dye kit with a t-shirt.

Shark Attack Soap Recipe

Ingredients:

14 oz. Stephenson suspending soap base
1 oz. white melt & pour soap base
crimson sparkle soap color bar
.4 oz. fragrance oil (of choice)
blue soap colorant (of choice)
biodegradable cosmetic glitter(s)
miniature toy rubber sharks
6 cavity rectangle silicone soap mold
99% isopropyl alcohol (in a spray bottle)

Instructions:

This shark attack soap recipe yields four homemade soap bars weighing approximately 4 oz. each.

Using a digital scale, begin by weighing out 1 oz. of the suspension soap base. Cut into chunks then place inside a small glass Pyrex measuring cup or glass scientific beaker. Heat in the microwave about 15-20 seconds or until melted.

Now stir in a small corner of the crimson sparkle soap color bar until it melts completely. (Alternately you can also use a liquid red soap colorant or mica to suit and add a dash of fine biodegradable cosmetic glitter in your color of choice.)

Not only are they easy to make, but they also make great gifts as well as party favors for say, a shark themed birthday or pool party. (Sense of humor required, of course.)

Using a sturdy book or similar item, prop your soap mold up at angle, then evenly pour the soap into two of the cavities of your soap mold. Place two of your miniature rubber sharks in each of the cavities so they are sitting side by side.

Once the soap hardens remove the soaps from the mold and cut each soap lengthwise between the sharks.

Now weigh out 5 oz. of the suspending soap base and cut into chunks. Heat in the microwave in 20-30 second increments until melted, stirring after each heating. Once melted, add a blue soap colorant and glitter of your choice to suit and stir to combine. Then weigh out .15 oz. of fragrance oil and stir into the melted soap.

Pour the soap evenly into four of your mold’s cavities.

Once the soap has hardened, weigh out 5 more oz. of the suspension soap base. Cut into chunks and heat until  melted, then add a second blue soap colorant and glitter to suit, along with .15 oz. of fragrance oil. Stir to combine then spritz the tops of the soaps in your mold with 99% isopropyl alcohol (in a spray bottle) and pour the soap you just made evenly into each of the four soap cavities (on top of the soap you poured previously.)

Allow the second layer of soap to cool slightly but not fully harden. Then weigh out 3 oz. of the suspension soap base along with 1 oz. of the white melt and pour soap base. Add a blue soap colorant to suit along with a white iridescent glitter (optional) and .1 oz. fragrance oil. (The fragrance oil I used had a yellow cast so it added some green to this layer. If your fragrance oil is clear and you want a bit of green, you can add a touch of yellow soap colorant to suit.) Stir well to combine.

Now spritz the top of the soap in the mold and pour the third layer of soap on top of the second layer. Then gently swirl the second and third layers with a chopstick or utensil.

Whether you're celebrating shark week or want a bloody fabulous Halloween gift, these melt and pour soaps are sure to add some excitement to anyone's bath. Not only are they easy to make, but they also make great gifts as well as party favors for say, a shark themed birthday or pool party. (Sense of humor required, of course.)

Once you’ve achieved your desired look, carefully place one shark soap into each of the four cavities of your mold so that the shark toys are positioned at the top edge of the mold and the red soap bottom is positioned toward the middle of each cavity. (You can set the soap on the top edge of the mold where the shark is to help keep the shark soap in place.)

Allow each of your shark attack soaps to fully harden then unmold. Using a utensil of your choice, gently remove some of the soap from around each shark to reveal the red soap.

If you want to craft these fun shark attack soaps to sell, you’ll need to follow good manufacturing practices (GMP) when making your product. You’ll find that the book, Good Manufacturing Practices for Soap and Cosmetic Handcrafters by Marie Gale, is a valuable resource if you’re just getting started making your own homemade soaps, skin care products and cosmetics.

In addition to GMP, you’ll also need to follow FDA guidelines for labeling your products. If you’re unsure about the rules and regulations regarding labeling cosmetics, the book, Soap and Cosmetic Labeling: How to Follow the Rules and Regs Explained in Plain English by Marie Gale, spells out everything you need to know to legally label your products.

If you make your own DIY shark attack soap, I’d love to see how yours turn out! So be sure to tag the soaps you make using the hashtag #soapdelishowoff when you share them on instagram so I can take a peek!

DIY Painted Pumpkins for Fall That Will Wow Your Neighbors

Rather than fuss with the mess of carving Jack O’ Lanterns that don’t last past Halloween, this year I decided to create my own DIY painted pumpkins! I even hosted a pumpkin paint night for me and my friends. I thought everyone came up with some really fantastic ideas for painting their pumpkins. And not only are these DIY painted pumpkins perfect for Halloween, but they can also be brought indoors for a seasonal fall table centerpiece!

Hosting your own pumpkin paint night is a snap. I simply provided boxed wines, snacks, paints and craft supplies while my guests brought their own paper mache pumpkins. If you don’t already have an arsenal of craft supplies on hand, you could also request that each guest bring a small container of paint and/or their own brushes in addition to the pumpkin of their choice. A pumpkin paint night is also a great idea as an alternate adult or teen Halloween party!

Following are some of the highlights from my pumpkin paint night I hosted last week when my friends and I created our own DIY painted pumpkins. But don’t forget to read to the end to see how you can recreate my sparkle painted pumpkin – plus more fall craft ideas!

Everyone that attended had their own fantastic ideas for how to paint their pumpkins.

Whitney added orange and black stripes to her pumpkin while Allison created a bright and cheery teal and white pumpkin with pink glitter swirls and yellow accents. (Allison’s husband was in attendance too, however he worked on painting a t-shirt as a part of his Halloween costume.)

She also painted a wooden “poison” Halloween sign.

And I, of course, painted a sparkly glitter themed pumpkin! Here’s how it was done.

DIY Painted Pumpkins with Glitter

© Rebecca Dawn Dillon

Materials & Supplies:

Paper mache pumpkin
Teal & lime green paint
Matte Mod Podge
Foam brushes
Krylon Glitter Shimmer Spray
Strong craft paint
Glitters
Ribbons

Instructions:

Cover your work surface with newspaper or a paper towel to protect it from paint. Then, using a foam brush, apply teal paint to the entire body of the pumpkin minus the stem. Allow the first coat of paint to dry completely then apply a second coat.

Once dried, use a foam brush to randomly apply Mod Podge to a front section of the pumpkin. Then sprinkle blue and green glitter onto the wet Mod Podge.

Once the Mod Podge dries, use a strong craft glue – I used E6000 craft adhesive – to glue a scrapbook chipboard phrase of your choice onto and across the front of the pumpkin.

Next, paint the stem of your pumpkin green. Then, while the paint is still wet, gently blow blue glitter into the wet paint on the pumpkin stem. Once dry, finish your pumpkin with 2-3 coats as desired of perfectly pink Krylon glitter shimmer spray.

Finally tie teal and green ribbons onto your painted pumpkin’s stem. I used long pieces of ribbon and tied the two ribbons together into a bow twice. Then I tied the leftover long ribbon ends into a bow again but this time I tied the teal and green ribbons into bows separately.
