No one wants to douse themselves in heavy, greasy feeling oils, especially in summer. So I formulated my mermaid shimmer body spray as a dry oil body spray. It sprays on and absorbs quickly so there’s greasy after feel. What’s left behind is soft, shimmering skin and a lovely fragrance!

Even better, this mermaid shimmer body spray is super easy to make. Just weigh, measure and mix the ingredients. Your final product is then ready in under ten minutes!

Mermaid Shimmer Body Spray Recipe

Ingredients:

.5 oz. rosehip seed oil
1 oz. clear jojoba oil
1.25 oz. fractionated coconut oil
1 oz. apricot kernel oil
.1 oz. skin safe fragrance oil
2 mL vitamin E oil (optional)
1/4 teaspoon cellini blue mica powder (or similar)
4 teaspoons super pearly white mica powder

Instructions:

You will need a digital scale and a set of measuring spoons for my mermaid shimmer body spray recipe. You’ll also need a graduated plastic transfer pipette to measure out the vitamin E oil.

Mermaid Shimmer Body Spray Recipe! This gorgeous mermaid shimmer body spray recipe leaves a touch of light reflecting, mica shimmer on skin so anyone feel like a mermaid for a day! Customize the recipe further with your own favorite scent. You can even use it in your hair!

Begin by weighing out the rosehip seed oil, jojoba  oil, fractionated coconut oil and apricot kernel oil. Combine in a glass beaker or a glass Pyrex measuring cup. Stir to combine.

Now weigh out your fragrance oil of choice and mix into the container of oils. I used a Citrus Blossoms & Heliotrope fragrance oil for my mermaid shimmer body spray recipe.

Using a graduated plastic transfer pipette, measure out the vitamin E oil and stir in. (Learn more about vitamin E oil and its use in DIY skin care here.)

Next, using a teaspoon measurement, measure out the micas and add to the oils. Stir vigorously until the mica is fully incorporated into the dry body oil base. There shouldn’t be any clumps and the color should be uniform throughout.

Note: Swap out the cellini blue mica for another color to customize the final color of your mermaid shimmer body spray! And don’t worry. This color won’t translate onto your skin.

Tip: If you’d also like to include glitter in your mermaid shimmer body spray, you can add glitter as well. However, you’ll need a very fine glitter that is .004″ in size so it doesn’t clog the sprayer.

Once combined, use a funnel to fill one 4 oz. bottle with a mist sprayer. (I used the 4 oz. Frosted PET Cosmo Round Bottles with White Fine Mist Sprayers and Brushed Aluminum Collars from SKS Bottle & Packaging found here.)

Screw on the sprayer then label your bottle as desired for personal use or gifting. (I made a sticker for mine by printing mermaid cat clipart from LePetite Market onto sticker paper.)

If you’d rather make my mermaid shimmer body spray recipe to sell, you’ll need to follow FDA guidelines for labeling your product. If you’re unsure about the rules and regulations regarding labeling cosmetics, I highly recommend the book, Soap and Cosmetic Labeling: How to Follow the Rules and Regs Explained in Plain English, by Marie Gale.

To use, simply shake the bottle to remix the ingredients (the mica will settle) then spray onto skin and massage in.

Keep reading to learn how to make your own sparkly cactus soaps!

Why eco-friendly glitter?

Eco-friendly, biodegradable cosmetic glitter hasn’t been around long but now that it’s readily available it allows you to make a positive impact on the environment. Eco-friendly glitter is biodegradable, sustainable, compostable and environmentally safe. While traditional glitter not only hangs around in the environment, but also pollutes our water and has a negative effect on marine wildlife.

Made from the cellulose from eucalyptus trees, eco-friendly biodegradable glitter is body safe and therefore can be used in face painting, soapmaking, bath bombs and other skin care applications. You can learn more about biodegradable glitter at The Sparkle Party here.

Tools you’ll need.

My DIY cactus soap requires two silicone soap molds. You will need this Blush cactus silicone mold and this six cavity rectangle silicone soap mold to make these soaps.

You’ll also need 2 lbs. of a melt and pour soap base. I used three different Stephenson melt and pour soap bases for my DIY cactus soap. However, you can use the same base for each step if desired. You’ll just need to make sure it’s a clear melt and pour soap base so you can see the layers of eco-friendly glitter!

You may also find a spray bottle filled with isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) helpful in removing any air bubbles that may arise.

In addition, you will also need a digital scale to weigh all of the ingredients, a 4-cup glass Pyrex measuring cup, a potato peeler and a microwave or double boiler.

DIY Cactus Soap

Ingredients:

Cactus Soap Embed Ingredients:

3 oz. Stephenson Goat’s Milk Melt and Pour Soap Base
green soap colorant of choice, to suit
.1 oz. skin safe fragrance oil, of choice

Bottom Layer Soap Ingredients:

16 oz. Stephenson Aloe Melt and Pour Soap Base
blue soap colorant of choice, to suit
.45 oz. skin safe fragrance oil, of choice

Top Layer Soap Ingredients:

6.65 oz. Stephenson Clear Melt and Pour Soap Base
eco-friendly biodegradable glitter in colors of choice, to suit
.2 oz. skin safe fragrance oil, of choice

Gold Accent Ingredients:

gold mica powder
isopropyl alcohol

Instructions:

You’ll begin by making the cactus soap embeds for your DIY cactus soap. To do this, use a digital scale to weigh out 3 oz. of Stephenson Goat’s Milk Melt and Pour Soap Base. Cut the soap into chunks then combine in a 4-cup glass Pyrex measuring cup. Heat the soap at 50% power in the microwave until melted.

Tip: If you want more color pop to your cactus soap embed, use a clear melt and pour soap base for this step.

Once the soap has melted, remove from heat and stir in your green soap colorant to suit. (I specifically used a jade green mica powder for this step. ) Mix well until the color is evenly distributed throughout. Then weigh out and stir in .1 oz. fragrance oil by weight. (I used a melon ball fragrance oil to scent my DIY cactus soap.)

Learn how to make your own colorful DIY cactus soap using melt and pour soap! This glittery, colorful cactus soap recipe is easier to make than you might think! And it makes a great DIY back to school teacher gift! Crafted using a combination of detergent free melt and pour soap bases and eco-friendly, biodegradable glitter, my DIY cactus soap is not only fun to use, but it's also safe for the environment and your skin.

Pour the melted green soap into all six of the cavities of your cactus silicone soap mold. Set aside.

While the cactus soap is cooling, you can make the bottom layer of blue soap in the rectangle soap mold.

To do this, weigh out 16 oz. of Stephenson Aloe Melt and Pour Soap Base. Cut into cubes and combine in a 4-cup glass Pyrex measuring cup. Heat in the microwave at 50% power until melted.

Remove the melted soap from the microwave and add your blue soap colorant to suit. (I specifically used an electric blue mica powder for this step.) Mix well until the color is evenly distributed throughout. Then weigh out and stir in .45 oz. of fragrance oil by weight.

Evenly pour the blue soap into each of the six cavities of your rectangle silicone mold. Fill each cavity 3/4 of the way full. Then spritz the soap with alcohol to remove any air bubbles. Set the molded soap aside to re-harden.

And it makes a great DIY back to school teacher gift! Crafted using a combination of detergent free melt and pour soap bases and eco-friendly, biodegradable glitter, my DIY cactus soap is not only fun to use, but it's also safe for the environment and your skin.

Once both the blue soap and the green cactus soaps have hardened, you’re ready for the next step.

Spritz the tops of the blue rectangle soap bars in the rectangle silicone mold with alcohol. Then sprinkle a fine layer of eco-friendly, biodegradable glitter on top of the soap bars. I used a combination of fine and chunky glitters in several colors.

Remove the green cactus soap embeds from the cactus silicone mold.

Crafted using a combination of detergent free melt and pour soap bases and eco-friendly, biodegradable glitter, my DIY cactus soap is not only fun to use, but it's also safe for the environment and your skin.

Spritz the tops of the blue soaps again and then place each of the cactus soaps on top of the blue soap bars. Set aside.

Next, weigh out 6.65 oz. of Stephenson Clear Melt and Pour Soap Base. Cut into chunks and combine in a 4-cup glass Pyrex measuring cup. Add several pinches of glitter to suit, then weigh out and add .2 oz. of fragrance oil. Stir to combine.

Spritz the tops of the soaps in the rectangle mold with alcohol.

Now, with one finger pressing down on one of the cactus soaps, slowly pour the clear soap into the cavity of the mold that you are pressing down on the cactus soap of. Fill the cavity to the top of the mold with soap, then repeat the process with the remaining five cavities of your mold.

Once your soaps have rehardened, you’re ready to paint on the gold accents. To do this, combine a small amount of gold mica powder with rubbing alcohol so it’s somewhere between fluid and a paste. Then, using a small paintbrush, paint the mica onto the tops and edges of the cacti as desired. Let dry.

Unicorn Glitter Butter Recipe

Ingredients:

1 oz. refined shea butter
1 oz. fractionated coconut oil
1 oz. sweet almond oil
.25 oz. vegetable glycerin
.25 oz. kokum butter
.25 oz. cera bellina wax
.05 oz. candelilla wax
.10 oz. candy crush fragrance oil
.5 oz. iridescent super sparkle glitter
.1 oz. super pearly white mica
1/4 teaspoon colloidal oatmeal
1/4 teaspoon rose pearl mica
1/4 teaspoon mauvey gem mica
1 mL vitamin E oil

Instructions:

Using a digital scale, weigh out the shea butter, kokum butter, cera bellina wax and the candelilla wax. Heat until melted in a double boiler (or in a glass Pyrex measuring cup at 40% power in the microwave) until melted.  Remove from heat.

Weigh out the fractionated coconut oil, glycerin, and sweet almond oil. Stir into the previously melted ingredients.

Next, weigh out the fragrance and stir in. Follow with the vitamin E oil (optional) using a graduated transfer pipette to measure out the amount called for.

Now, using a teaspoon measure, measure out the colloidal oatmeal and the rose pear and mauvey gem micas. (You can substitute these colors for ones of your own if desired. These micas give my unicorn glitter butter the pretty purple tint, but won’t color skin.) Stir into the unicorn glitter butter base.

Finally weigh out the super pearly white mica and the iridescent super sparkle glitter and stir into the unicorn glitter butter.

Allow the butter to cool and thicken. Once it starts to thicken, remix the unicorn glitter butter with a fork or other utensil until the mica and glitter that have settled to the bottom are evenly incorporated throughout the product.

Once your unicorn glitter butter has completely thickened – this may take several hours to overnight – spoon the mixture evenly into two 1 oz. double walled jars.

Unicorn Glitter Butter Recipe! This magical unicorn glitter butter recipe is perfect for parties and summer festivals! Scented with a sweet candy crush fragrance oil, this lavender colored unicorn glitter butter leaves a lovely layer of iridescent sparkly glitter on skin wherever it's applied!

Then screw the lids onto your jars and label as desired for personal use or gifting. I created my labels for my unicorn glitter butter using this magical unicorn clipart I purchased from Kenna Sato Designs.

A few important notes.

I don’t recommend substitutions for this recipe other than a color swap for the rose pearl and mauvey gem micas and the fragrance oil. The ingredients are kind of all perfectly balanced together based on their properties. It’s what gives this unicorn glitter butter its great creamy texture and keeps the glitter adhered to your skin.

This can be used anywhere on your body to add some shimmer and shine! However, this product is not recommended for eyes due to the glitter content. (Currently the FDA does not approve any glitters for use on eyes in the United States.)

If you’d like to be able to use my unicorn glitter butter on your lips as well as your body, you’ll need to swap out the mauvey gem mica for a lip safe mica and either omit the fragrance oil or use a lip safe fragrance oil.

If you make my unicorn glitter butter recipe I’d love to see how it turned out! Be sure to share a photo of your unicorn glitter butter along with your other bath and body recipe by using the tag #soapdelishowoff on instagram! (You might even get featured on my blog!)
