I love buying handmade. Every since I discovered (and went a little crazy) buying prints from The Black Apple (ie. Emily Winfield Martin) on Etsy in the way way back I was hooked. It wasn’t long until I was selling art prints of my own (surprise!) followed by soap later on. In the midst of this, I also bought tons of jewelry and soap from other artisans.

I even bought handknit merino wool socks from an Etsy seller in Canada to keep my toes warm when I started selling my own soaps at my local farmers market. This in turn led to an entire new world of handmade artisans for me to fall in love with. So keeping with that theme of creating and buying handmade, here are some of my favorite handmade holiday gifts of the season – all from Etsy, of course.

Handmade Holiday Gifts

One of my favorite handmade holiday gifts to give – and receive! – is pottery. Not only is it beautiful, it’s also functional. Making it the perfect handmade gift for anyone on your holiday gift list. I feel incredibly fortunate to live in an area abundant in talented potters. Many of whom pass their gift forward either through teaching or internships. I recently met a new potter who I fell in love with on sight. (Well, her pottery. Although she is remarkable as well.)

Many of whom pass their gift forward either through teaching or an internship. I recently met a new potter who I fell in love with on sight. (Well, her pottery. Although she is lovely as well.)

I met Ingrid Chase earlier this month at our city’s biannual RIOT Rooster – a yearly indie craft fair. Not only is Ingrid local to my hometown, she’s also an art teacher. Her online shop, IMC Clay, is filled with unique, one-of-a-kind mugs, succulent planters, vases, ring dishes and even earrings! So there’s something for everyone on your list.

I’m especially fond of the texture and hand sculpted elements that Ingrid adds to each of her pieces. It not only makes her work unique (and recognizable) but it also makes each piece she produces its own little work of art.

My dear friend, Bambi, and I both purchased items from Ingrid this month, though selfishly as a treat for ourselves. Bambi bought a pair of one-of-a-kind (reversible!) earrings while I purchased what is my new favorite coffee mug. You can shop with Ingrid for your handmade holiday gifts (and self indulgences) on Etsy here.

Bright Life Skincare. Handmade natural beauty and artisan skin care products. These natural skin care products are perfect for handmade holiday gifts & ideas. A lovely addition to any seasonal gift baskets as a handmade gift for her. Or try her natural sore muscle rub as a handmade holiday gift for him!

Bright Life Skincare is another wonderful local artisan that I had the pleasure of shopping with during RIOT Rooster. Izzy Donahue sells a variety of natural skin care products in her Etsy shop. Her products include bath soaks, lip balms, sugar scrubs, muscle rubs and facial serums. While many of Izzy’s products are well suited for stocking stuffers, they also are perfect for creating a handmade holiday gift basket. For a holiday themed gift, consider gifting her peppermint foot soak.

Handmade body butter from Unbound Elements for handmade holiday gifts this winter. Try not to eat yourself after using this one, we DARE you! Unbound Lemon Biscotti Body Butter smells like the pure deliciousness of your grandmas fresh baked lemon cookies straight out of the oven. Light, sweet, tart and rich at the same time, this Body Butter will leave your skin (and nose) in pure ecstasy!

I also purchased two lip scrub and lip balm duos from Unbound Elements at the same event to give as handmade holiday gifts this winter. Also local to the area, Lyndsey Dickerson is a talented artisan who crafts not only natural beauty products, but amazing jewelry as well. Her beard wax and mens fragrances make great handmade holiday gifts and ideas for him. While her hot chocolate lip balm is perfect for the kids’ stockings.

Show off your unique style with one-of-a-kind handcrafted jewelry from Unbound Elements. These beautiful rings, earrings and necklaces will always be in fashion and they make great handmade holiday gifts for her.

For handmade holiday gifts for her, I’m fond of Lyndsey’s coffee body scrub and butters. However, I also love her one-of-a-kind rings, earrings and necklaces.

Essential oil gift box for unique holiday gifts. This adorable wooden gift box from Unbound Elements includes a set of two essential oil blends of your choice, one diffuser necklace, description cards and two aromatherapy inhalers.

Or consider this lovely essential oil gift box. This adorable wooden gift box includes a set of two essential oil blends of your choice, one diffuser necklace, description cards and two aromatherapy inhalers.

This stunning handcrafted heart shaped ring jewelry box from Splintered Thought is perfect for handmade holidays gifts and a unique way to propose prior to a wedding engagement.

Lyndsey’s other half, Stuart Harrison, also has an Etsy shop called Splintered Thought. He handcrafts heart-shaped wooden jewelry boxes that are perfect for anyone planning to pop the question over the holidays.

Handcrafted unicorn stacking rings from Magpie Metalworks. Who doesn't want a unicorn ring!? This 3 ring set is completely handmade of sterling silver. If you love fantasy then these rings are for you! Makes a unique Christmas stocking stuffer for a teenage daughter.

Or, if you have a teenage daughter, consider these handcrafted unicorn fantasy stacking rings. These can be purchased as a group or individually depending on your budget.

Handmade sterling silver skull ring from Magpie Metalworks. A unique Christmas stocking stuffer idea for him. This is one of the coolest rings! I use a shot plate made by another maker to form the skull and solder it to a half round hammered band. I then add a rich patina to the ring before polishing to give it a darker look and feel. It's chunky, rustic, and awesome!

I also love this more masculine skull ring for the guys. All of these rings are made by another local artisan, Piper Lane of Magpiper Metalworks. While she did not attend RIOT Rooster this year, I did meet her there the year prior. In addition to rings, Piper also sells earrings, bracelets and pendants.

Contemporary hand embroidery. DIY cactus embroidery kit from Hoops and Expectations. Handmade holiday gifts for fellow friends and crafters.

I recently made a purchase from Hoops and Expectations for a birthday gift for my dear friend, Bambi. After staying with her during my separation, I learned some pretty nifty things about her that I didn’t know before. As it turns out she is completely kick ass at embroidery. She has a small trunk that she keeps on display in home. One night, we opened up that trunk, and I got to see inside. The trunk was filled with the most beautifully embroidered pillows. I expected her to tell me they were machine made, as the designs were so detailed and completely perfect. But no. Bambi had made them all herself!

While these days Bambi makes and sells her own seed bead jewelry, she used to sell embroidered pillows when she lived in Wisconsin. So knowing her love of David Bowie and her desire to find the time to embroider again, I bought her an awesome David Bowie embroidery kit for her birthday. However, if David Bowie isn’t your thing – or your friend’s – Hoops and Expectations sells other complete DIY embroidery kits for your fellow crafters. In her shop you find all kinds of fun kits from cacti to the Grinch! In fact, I’m thinking of trying out one of these amazing kits for myself in the New Year. You can browse all of the designs offered by Hoops and Expectations in her Etsy shop here.

Flower metal trivet hot plate. If you're looking for houseware related handmade holiday gifts, then be sure to check out Highland Ridge Rustics. Located in Tennessee, this shop offers hand cut metal Christmas tree ornaments, wall hooks, signs and other home decor and even products to organize your life. I bought a mail organizer from them around two years ago and absolutely loved it! However, lately I've been eyeing the line of handmade trivets they offer. These come in other shapes, including one the shape of Texas, and make a great gift for anyone who loves to cook or entertain.

Handmade artisan soap gifts. Christmas themed holiday soaps for handmade holiday gifts and stocking stuffer ideas this winter.

And, of course, no soapmakers handmade holiday gift guide would be complete without soap! So here are a few of my favorite handmade artisan soaps of the season! Clockwise: Two-Pack of Holiday Soaps from Savory and Rose, Snow Covered Fir Tree Soap from The Village Soapsmith, The Night Before Christmas Soap from Owl Natural Soaps and Snowflake Christmas Soap from The Charming Frog. Why You Shouldn’t Wait Until Retirement to Indulge in Self Care

You hear people talk about self care a lot. And with good reason. Self care isn’t just making sure our basic needs are met. Self care is what recharges us. And while the definition of self care may vary from person to person, in the end it is the key to a healthy, balanced lifestyle.

Why You Shouldn't Wait Until Retirement to Indulge in Self Care. Self care isn't just making sure our basic needs are met. Self care is what recharges us. And while the definition of self care may vary from person to person, in the end it is the key to a healthy, balanced lifestyle. #selfcare #healthandwellness #healthylifestyle

Are you still putting yourself last?

How many times have you heard your parents say, “When I retire, I’ll have the time to do the things I love.” Or, “When I retire, I’ll spend more time outdoors on the hiking trail.” Or perhaps you’re already at that age that you’ve promised these things to yourself. You’ll travel more. You’ll make time for brunch with friends.

The problem with this way of thinking is that you are always planning for a future you. So when you finally arrive at that point in time where you had planned to make changes, those changes never happen.

What generally occurs, instead, is one of two things. You either A) find that you’ve neglected self care (which includes a healthy diet and exercise, fresh air and healthy stress management) and your health won’t allow you to do all those things you planned over the years. Or B) you’ve trained yourself to put other people above you for so long, that when you finally do have the time to focus on yourself, you aren’t able to break a lifetime of behavior in which you were always doing for others.

Do you have trouble saying no?

My mother has always been the type of person who has trouble saying no. “We need someone to be treasurer for ABWA. Can you do it? We really need someone.” “Sure.” “We need someone to organize the PTA fundraiser. No one volunteered this year. Can you help?” “Of course.” “We’d really love to have a Cub Scout troop for our church. Can you run that?” “Absolutely.” “No one signed up to host a Princess House party? Would you mind hosting one?” “I can make that happen.”

Growing up I remember my mother being involved in everything. From work to church to school she did just about everything that anyone asked of her. And as a baby boomer, I feel like she was raised to be that homemaker, parent and activist. At the same time, however, roles were changing. So she also worked full time. She didn’t ask for help. And she eventually ran herself into exhaustion and a nervous breakdown.

My mother retired around two years or so ago. Guess what? She still hasn’t found the time to keep up with her flower gardens. She’s volunteering now more than she did when she was working. And why not? How else do you fill that void that work left open if all you’ve ever done is work?

More recently my grandmother has been unable to take care of herself. So my mother is only home one or two days a week. The rest of the time she’s helping my grandmother with everything she needs as the family prepares to move her into assisted living.

All of those things my mother said she’d do once she retired? Well, she hasn’t done them yet.

You shouldn’t wait until retirement to indulge in self care because self care is not an indulgence. Self care is a must for a happy, healthy life. Self care is a must for managing stress so you don’t get overwhelmed. Self care is healthcare. (Also, learning how to say “no” is pretty empowering too.)

An introduction to Soulplant Apothecary.

Recently I had the opportunity to try, what I consider, self care products from a small company called Soulplant Apothecary. Based in Zagreb, Croatia, this little Etsy shop is owned by Kristijana. Kritijana not only works as a transformational life-coach, aromatherapist and herbalist, she also crafts personal care products that she believes can help people live more soulful lives.

The principles behind Soulplant Apothecary tie together plant love, skin care and soul healing. So it’s easy to use these handmade products to better connect with your inner self. A daily skin care routine not only helps to soothe your body, it can also help calm your mind. So take that extra few minutes each day to really focus on your skin care needs.

I love all of the products I tried from Soulplant Apothecary. My hope is that you will love them as much as I do. As well, be sure to utilize skin care as a daily reminder to take care of not just your physical health, but your emotional health as well.

Sacred Space Room & Body Mist from Soulplant Apothecary. This is a truly sacred blend of purifying essential oils and mindfully chosen floral waters. It helps dispense stagnant energy in your space and/or aura.

My favorite self care product from Soulplant Apothecary.

My favorite product from Soulplant Apothecary has to be Kristijana’s sacred space room + body mist. As a person who has struggled with anxiety throughout my life, I love that this essential oil mist helps to ground my energy and cleanse my space. Dubbed as a magic mist for soulful living, this mist been super helpful at helping me focus and concentrate on my writing and upcoming projects. Plus it smells amazing – something similar to sitting outdoors on a damp forest floor enveloped by woods and rich dirt.

In addition to the sacred space room + body mist, you can also shop for three other aromatherapeutic scents including happiness, divine feminine – and for him – divine masculine. Try your favorite scent to help you destress when you meditate. (Soulplant Apothecary’s sacred dust smudging blend is also lovely for this purpose.) Or cuddle up with that book you keep meaning to read. You deserve a break in your day to let the tension and stressors in your life go.

This hair love restore & heal hair serum from Soulplant Apothecary is a potent blend of more powerful plant oils, just to mention some of them: argan, macadamia and rare precious gem of nature - abyssinia oil. This composition is meant to protect hair from damage and to substitute commercial conditioners. Rich in fatty acids and vitamins, this elixir will add boost of glow and health to your hair.

My roommate’s favorite self care find.

Having survived an emotionally abusive marriage followed by breast cancer, my roommate Bambi springs for a haircut and color as a treat to herself when she has a little extra cash. She’s a fan of flat ironing her hair (when it’s not raining) to smooth out her naturally kinky, curly hair. Therefore it’s no surprise that her favorite product from Soul Apothecary is the hair love restore + heal hair serum.

Thoughtfully crafted with a blend of argan, macadamia and rare abyssinia oil, this plant based hair elixir protects hair from damage and gives hair a healthy shine. Out of the plethora of hair care products on the market today, Bambi rates this hair serum as THE absolute best hair care product she’s used for straightening her hair. For super damaged hair, consider Soul Apothecary’s strength + volume version of hair love.

FLOWER MANTRA | Exfoliating plant powder from Soulplant Apothecary. This is a gentle exfoliating powder, made of differently granulated plant powders, clays, and flowers. Include it in your daily skin care routine to help your skin glow and look fresh. It gently exfoliates skin, leaving it soft and clean.

In addition to these products, Soulplant Apothecary also carries a wonderful flower mantra exfoliating plant powder, nourishing face cream, ritual bath salts and yoni sacred feminine oil – to restore the connection with your feminine power center. (Which is a whole other kind of very special self care. *wink*) To learn more about Soulplant Apothecary or to browse all of the great products created by Kristijana, visit her Etsy shop here.

More self care rituals that are easy to adopt.

• Spend a few minutes, either at the beginning or the end of the day, to write in a journal. This will help you visualize the achievement of your goals and be more mindful.

• Take a mid-day walk at lunchtime to boost your energy levels.

• Turn off your ringer and take a break from your phone. No one should be tethered to a phone 24/7. Choose a time frame out of everyday to disconnect from all your digital devices and just sit outdoors, watch the clouds and take in the view.

• Pick a day to say no to social media each week. Instead, invite a friend or neighbor over for a cup of tea and engage in a real conversation about something other than the news.

• Reduce stress with simple activities such as spending time with a pet, painting a picture, making soap, planting a flower or even dancing – like no one is watching, of course!

What are some of your favorite ways to practice self care? I’d love to hear your tips for reducing stress, practicing mindfulness or simply how you take time out for yourself each day. Alternately, if you are currently struggling with where you are in life, I recommend reading my article titled, You Are Not a Failure (Tips to Change Your Perspective & Get Your Mojo Back.)

Making Your Own Whipped Sugar Scrubs

Now that you’ve tried – and fallen head over heels for – the awesomeness that is the whipped sugar scrub, why not try your hand at making your own?

I’ve found that a lot of the simple recipes that whipped sugar scrubs call for include coconut oil. It’s important to note, that while coconut oil does have some amazing skin care properties, it also rates pretty high on the comedogenic chart. What this means is that it’s likely to clog pores in most people which in turn can lead to acne.

Additionally, I find that straight up coconut oil irritates my dry skin. If this has been your experience as well, you can easily substitute the coconut oil in any of these whipped sugar scrub recipes with babassu oil.

While coconut oil rates a 4 on the comedogenic chart, babassu oil is a low-comedogenic oil with a rating of only 2 – meaning it won’t clog pores for most people. It also works as a mild moisturizer that calms and soothes all skin types, whether you’re acne prone or suffer from skin conditions like eczema or dry skin.

What are the Other Skin Care Benefits Babassu Oil?

Babassu oil has many of the same properties to regular coconut oil. Like coconut oil, babassu oil is semi-solid at room temperature with a melting point around body temperature – slightly higher than coconut oils own 76°F melt point. A great substitute for those with coconut allergies, this mild moisturizer also won’t leave skin feeling oily or greasy and it works great in hair too.

In addition babassu oil contains a high amount of skin beneficial fatty acids including lauric, stearic, myristic, palmitic and oleic acid. It’s also rich in vitamin E, a natural antioxidant, and has anti-inflammatory properties. It’s a wonderful choice for an itchy scalp or dry skin and hair. (Learn more about using babassu oil for hair care here.)

You can learn more about common carrier oils and where they rank on the comedogenic chart at the Holistic Health Herbalist here. Also be sure to check out my other skin care recipes that contain babassu oil here.

And, like the previously mentioned mint green tea whipped sugar scrub, this product is also made using a foaming bath butter base. (It’s also my most popular post of all of 2017.)

Whether Halloween parties or trick-or-treating take over your neighborhood on the last day of October every year, it seems there’s at least that one year when your new tween or teen loses that excitement for Halloween. Perhaps they feel too old for trick-or-treating and so they stay indoors, glued to a computer screen, realizing it’s both easier and cheaper to simply hit up the 75% off sales on candy the day after Halloween.

Non-Food Halloween Treats that will WOW your teens! Gifting your teen, or even your own friends and coworkers, these non-food Halloween treats can infuse some of the fun back into this spook-tacular holiday. And perhaps remind them to carve out a little time out for themselves devoid of technology and the drama of school life. Following you'll find the perfect creepy collection of handmade bath and body Halloween treats to haunt your bathroom this Halloween.

Of course, while sales are spectacular, they are not nearly as fun as participating in the holiday festivities. Weekly Wrap Up (Week of April 16th-April 22nd)

I may receive compensation from links on this site. See my disclosure policy.

These Hand Poured 100% Soy Lemongrass Citronella Outdoor Candles from Pure Palette naturally deter mosquitoes and other biting insects!

I missed writing a weekly wrap up the past two weeks in a row. Part of it was getting behind on blog projects. Part of it was getting the house cleaned for a game night James was hosting. Part of it was just life. And being overwhelmed. I had a freak out week where I was just overly consumed about failing with my new direction. Quitting my day job. Meeting the weekly blogging goals I set for myself. Terrified I won’t be able to hack it blogging full time and make enough to both pay my debts and live off of.

So between coming up with new bath and body recipes, trying to get them executed, and stressing myself to the point there was too much in my head to focus I forgot for a moment that this is what I love. And it’s okay to not always get it right.

Week before last I had not one, but two projects fail. But that’s the process. I had to remember that I am only one person. I’m not Martha Stewart. I don’t have an insane budget to play with. I don’t have employees. I don’t have a photographer or a designer. And I definitely don’t have a savvy marketing guru in my corner. There’s just me.

Realistically, one person can only do so much. And unfortunately not all of my days are sunny. So I have shelved some of the higher expectations I’ve set for myself and I got some of my mojo back this week. I was able to post three original projects for you all to give a try. And I’m pretty excited about that. (I found this article from Wit & Delight especially inspiring in getting my head back to where it needs to be.)

James shopping for an electric smoker for a cookout & cocktail party!

I also remembered I need support and friends and breaks in my life. So this week I’ve also been working on planning a cocktail & cookout party for James and my friends in May. James bought a smoker so he can smoke a ridiculous amount of meat and I’ve been hunting for awesome cocktail recipes that I can serve punch style in mason jar drink containers. I’ve also been making some fun party favors for swag bags like my soap donuts, solid salt scrub donuts and bug away butter. And, I’ve been shopping too.

"Planted" Flash Temporary Tattoos by Steffi Lynn of Have a Nice Day Out of Brooklyn, NY

I bought some amazing lemongrass + citronella bug free zone candles from Pure Palette, who also resides in my home state Virginia, so we’re not spilling cocktails or dropping meats because we’re busy swatting at annoying biting insects.

I also bought some handmade goodies for my party swag bags including some super fun temporary tattoos from both PiCO Tatouage Temporaire out of Canada and Have a Nice Day out of Brooklyn, NY. (Pictured above are Steffi Lynn’s “Planted” Flash Temporary Tattoos.)

And I bought an assortment of both fan favorites and Fiesta Lollipops from Luxe Lollies that includes flavors like Salted Watermelon Jalapeno Limeade, Muy Loco Salted Jalapeno Margarita, Delicioso Salted Margarita, Nutty Horchata, and Pineapple Jalapeño Lime.

Reusable Party Animal Favor Bags from Love & Confetti

And of course one must have swag bags to put said party favors in! So I bought these fun reusable (I mean, it IS earth day everyday!) party animal favor bags from With Love & Confetti. (Discover more party inspiration on my Party Ideas Pinterest board.)

I also want to make some Star Wars inspired and mustache soaps as well as some mini perfumes so each bag has some variety with no two being quite exactly the same. And of course I’ll be posting those projects here on the blog at some point so you won’t miss out either!

Confetti Bundt Cake Bath Bombs from The Bath Candy Shop! This handmade bath bomb is scented with a confetti cake fragrance and is topped with soap drizzle and sprinkles.

And here are some of my favorite products I’ve been crushing on this week:
