Why eco-friendly glitter?

Eco-friendly, biodegradable cosmetic glitter hasn’t been around long but now that it’s readily available it allows you to make a positive impact on the environment. Eco-friendly glitter is biodegradable, sustainable, compostable and environmentally safe. While traditional glitter not only hangs around in the environment, but also pollutes our water and has a negative effect on marine wildlife.

Made from the cellulose from eucalyptus trees, eco-friendly biodegradable glitter is body safe and therefore can be used in face painting, soapmaking, bath bombs and other skin care applications. You can learn more about biodegradable glitter at The Sparkle Party here.

Tools you’ll need.

My DIY cactus soap requires two silicone soap molds. You will need this Blush cactus silicone mold and this six cavity rectangle silicone soap mold to make these soaps.

You’ll also need 2 lbs. of a melt and pour soap base. I used three different Stephenson melt and pour soap bases for my DIY cactus soap. However, you can use the same base for each step if desired. You’ll just need to make sure it’s a clear melt and pour soap base so you can see the layers of eco-friendly glitter!

You may also find a spray bottle filled with isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) helpful in removing any air bubbles that may arise.

In addition, you will also need a digital scale to weigh all of the ingredients, a 4-cup glass Pyrex measuring cup, a potato peeler and a microwave or double boiler.

DIY Cactus Soap

Ingredients:

Cactus Soap Embed Ingredients:

3 oz. Stephenson Goat’s Milk Melt and Pour Soap Base
green soap colorant of choice, to suit
.1 oz. skin safe fragrance oil, of choice

Bottom Layer Soap Ingredients:

16 oz. Stephenson Aloe Melt and Pour Soap Base
blue soap colorant of choice, to suit
.45 oz. skin safe fragrance oil, of choice

Top Layer Soap Ingredients:

6.65 oz. Stephenson Clear Melt and Pour Soap Base
eco-friendly biodegradable glitter in colors of choice, to suit
.2 oz. skin safe fragrance oil, of choice

Gold Accent Ingredients:

gold mica powder
isopropyl alcohol

Instructions:

You’ll begin by making the cactus soap embeds for your DIY cactus soap. To do this, use a digital scale to weigh out 3 oz. of Stephenson Goat’s Milk Melt and Pour Soap Base. Cut the soap into chunks then combine in a 4-cup glass Pyrex measuring cup. Heat the soap at 50% power in the microwave until melted.

Tip: If you want more color pop to your cactus soap embed, use a clear melt and pour soap base for this step.

Once the soap has melted, remove from heat and stir in your green soap colorant to suit. (I specifically used a jade green mica powder for this step. ) Mix well until the color is evenly distributed throughout. Then weigh out and stir in .1 oz. fragrance oil by weight. (I used a melon ball fragrance oil to scent my DIY cactus soap.)

And it makes a great DIY back to school teacher gift! Crafted using a combination of detergent free melt and pour soap bases and eco-friendly, biodegradable glitter, my DIY cactus soap is not only fun to use, but it's also safe for the environment and your skin.

Pour the melted green soap into all six of the cavities of your cactus silicone soap mold. Set aside.

While the cactus soap is cooling, you can make the bottom layer of blue soap in the rectangle soap mold.

To do this, weigh out 16 oz. of Stephenson Aloe Melt and Pour Soap Base. Cut into cubes and combine in a 4-cup glass Pyrex measuring cup. Heat in the microwave at 50% power until melted.

Remove the melted soap from the microwave and add your blue soap colorant to suit. (I specifically used an electric blue mica powder for this step.) Mix well until the color is evenly distributed throughout. Then weigh out and stir in .45 oz. of fragrance oil by weight.

Evenly pour the blue soap into each of the six cavities of your rectangle silicone mold. Fill each cavity 3/4 of the way full. Then spritz the soap with alcohol to remove any air bubbles. Set the molded soap aside to re-harden.

Crafted using a combination of detergent free melt and pour soap bases and eco-friendly, biodegradable glitter, my DIY cactus soap is not only fun to use, but it's also safe for the environment and your skin.

Once both the blue soap and the green cactus soaps have hardened, you’re ready for the next step.

Spritz the tops of the blue rectangle soap bars in the rectangle silicone mold with alcohol. Then sprinkle a fine layer of eco-friendly, biodegradable glitter on top of the soap bars. I used a combination of fine and chunky glitters in several colors.

Remove the green cactus soap embeds from the cactus silicone mold.

Crafted using a combination of detergent free melt and pour soap bases and eco-friendly, biodegradable glitter, my DIY cactus soap is not only fun to use, but it's also safe for the environment and your skin.

Spritz the tops of the blue soaps again and then place each of the cactus soaps on top of the blue soap bars. Set aside.

Next, weigh out 6.65 oz. of Stephenson Clear Melt and Pour Soap Base. Cut into chunks and combine in a 4-cup glass Pyrex measuring cup. Add several pinches of glitter to suit, then weigh out and add .2 oz. of fragrance oil. Stir to combine.

Spritz the tops of the soaps in the rectangle mold with alcohol.

Now, with one finger pressing down on one of the cactus soaps, slowly pour the clear soap into the cavity of the mold that you are pressing down on the cactus soap of. Fill the cavity to the top of the mold with soap, then repeat the process with the remaining five cavities of your mold.

Once your soaps have rehardened, you’re ready to paint on the gold accents. To do this, combine a small amount of gold mica powder with rubbing alcohol so it’s somewhere between fluid and a paste. Then, using a small paintbrush, paint the mica onto the tops and edges of the cacti as desired. Let dry.

Now remove each of your DIY cactus soaps from the rectangle silicone mold. Use a potato peeler to bevel the top edges on all six of your soaps.

All that’s left is to tightly wrap each of your cactus soaps in foodservice film to protect them from dirt and moisture. Your cactus soaps are now ready for personal use or gifting!

What’s the story morning glory?

Everyone once in awhile by a sheer stroke of luck, I think, I come up with a skin care recipe that I’m just head over heels for. It’s kind of like, well… magic! My new unicorn glitter butter recipe is one of those magical recipes. Not only does it feel and smell amazing, but you will sparkle will like mad whenever you wear it! I hope you enjoy my new unicorn glitter butter recipe as I much as I do.

Unicorn Glitter Butter Recipe

Ingredients:

1 oz. refined shea butter
1 oz. fractionated coconut oil
1 oz. sweet almond oil
.25 oz. vegetable glycerin
.25 oz. kokum butter
.25 oz. cera bellina wax
.05 oz. candelilla wax
.10 oz. candy crush fragrance oil
.5 oz. iridescent super sparkle glitter
.1 oz. super pearly white mica
1/4 teaspoon colloidal oatmeal
1/4 teaspoon rose pearl mica
1/4 teaspoon mauvey gem mica
1 mL vitamin E oil

Instructions:

Using a digital scale, weigh out the shea butter, kokum butter, cera bellina wax and the candelilla wax. Heat until melted in a double boiler (or in a glass Pyrex measuring cup at 40% power in the microwave) until melted.  Remove from heat.

Weigh out the fractionated coconut oil, glycerin, and sweet almond oil. Stir into the previously melted ingredients.

Next, weigh out the fragrance and stir in. Follow with the vitamin E oil (optional) using a graduated transfer pipette to measure out the amount called for.

Now, using a teaspoon measure, measure out the colloidal oatmeal and the rose pear and mauvey gem micas. (You can substitute these colors for ones of your own if desired. These micas give my unicorn glitter butter the pretty purple tint, but won’t color skin.) Stir into the unicorn glitter butter base.

Finally weigh out the super pearly white mica and the iridescent super sparkle glitter and stir into the unicorn glitter butter.

Allow the butter to cool and thicken. Once it starts to thicken, remix the unicorn glitter butter with a fork or other utensil until the mica and glitter that have settled to the bottom are evenly incorporated throughout the product.

Once your unicorn glitter butter has completely thickened – this may take several hours to overnight – spoon the mixture evenly into two 1 oz. double walled jars.

Then screw the lids onto your jars and label as desired for personal use or gifting. I created my labels for my unicorn glitter butter using this magical unicorn clipart I purchased from Kenna Sato Designs.

A few important notes.

I don’t recommend substitutions for this recipe other than a color swap for the rose pearl and mauvey gem micas and the fragrance oil. The ingredients are kind of all perfectly balanced together based on their properties. It’s what gives this unicorn glitter butter its great creamy texture and keeps the glitter adhered to your skin.

This can be used anywhere on your body to add some shimmer and shine! However, this product is not recommended for eyes due to the glitter content. (Currently the FDA does not approve any glitters for use on eyes in the United States.)

If you’d like to be able to use my unicorn glitter butter on your lips as well as your body, you’ll need to swap out the mauvey gem mica for a lip safe mica and either omit the fragrance oil or use a lip safe fragrance oil.

If you make my unicorn glitter butter recipe I’d love to see how it turned out! Be sure to share a photo of your unicorn glitter butter along with your other bath and body recipe by using the tag #soapdelishowoff on instagram! (You might even get featured on my blog!)

Ready to jump right into creating your own unicorn inspired eyeshadow? There are a few things you’ll need for this mineral makeup project.

DIY Unicorn Eyeshadow Ingredients & Materials:

I used the 10 ml black plastic jars with 3 dividers with black window lids from SKS Bottle & Packaging for my DIY unicorn shadow to keep the colors separate. However, you can mix all of the colors individually then fill an undivided jar in three sections of color. This will allow you to swipe all of the colors onto one brush at the same time to use as a highlighter.

You’ll also need an assortment of eye safe micas, fine silver rainbow cosmetic glitter and sericite to create your colors. I purchased these ingredients from Brambleberry.

And, to keep the colors together when pressed, improve glide and staying power, I also used isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol and dimethicone.

If you’d like your DIY unicorn eyeshadow scented, you’ll also need a skin safe fragrance oil. I used a rose quartz fragrance oil, also from Brambleberry, however you can use any fragrance oil you prefer. I recommend a skin safe fragrance oil with no vanilla content and that’s mostly clear without a heavy yellow cast.

Have everything you need? Let’s get started! You’ll find the mineral makeup recipes for each of the colors for your DIY unicorn eyeshadow below. I used .15CC scoops for all of the dry measurements indicated and a graduated transfer pipette to measure out the liquid ingredients in drops.

Pink Shimmer Eyeshadow Ingredients:

8 scoops sericite
16 scoops rose pearl mica
8 scoops super pearly white mica
20 scoops fine silver rainbow eco-glitter

12 drops isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol
16 drops dimethicone
5 drops rose quartz fragrance oil

Purple Shimmer Eyeshadow Ingredients:

8 scoops sericite
8  scoops mauvey gem mica
8 scoops amethyst purple mica
8 scoops super pearly white mica
20 scoops fine silver rainbow eco-glitter

12 drops isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol
16 drops dimethicone
5 drops rose quartz fragrance oil

Blue Shimmer Eyeshadow Ingredients:

8 scoops sericite
16  scoops cellini blue mica
8 scoops super pearly white mica
20 scoops fine silver rainbow eco-glitter

12 drops isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol
16 drops dimethicone
5 drops rose quartz fragrance oil

Instructions:

Begin by cutting out a small piece of cardboard that fits into the cavities of your container. You can do this by tracing a circle around the jar, then cutting it out slightly inside the circle you drew so that it fits inside the jar. Then cut the circle into three equal parts that match the cavities of your container. Trim them down slightly until each fits inside a cavity.

Next, you’ll make the eyeshadow colors for your DIY unicorn eyeshadow. To do this, start with your first color recipe. Begin with the sericite, adding 8 scoops of the ingredient to a small dish or shallow bowl. (My scoops were not exact. I used slightly rounded scoops for each ingredient.)

Learn how to make your own scented DIY unicorn eyeshadow. This fun trio of scented pressed eyeshadows offers lasting pastel color and shimmer that’s perfect for eyes. Once you’ve mastered these colors, be sure to try out your own custom DIY unicorn eyeshadow in custom colors and scents!

Follow with the micas, then mix well using a toothpick or other small utensil.

Now add the glitter and remix until all of the dry ingredients are fully incorporated into the shadow.

Once you’ve mixed the dry ingredients, use a dropper to add the rubbing alcohol, dimethicone and the fragrance oil. Mix well with a toothpick until the eyeshadow is evenly coated with the wet ingredients.

Fill one of the cavities of your eyeshadow pan with the shadow, piling it into a mound. Gently press the shadow down with your finger just until the eyeshadow is about even with the top of the jar.

Next, wrap one of the small pieces of cardboard you cut out in a piece of thin linen or wax paper.

Press the wrapped cardboard on top of the shadow into your cavity with as much force as possible, then gently remove the wrapped cardboard. Your first color is now complete!

Simply follow the same process with your remaining scented DIY unicorn eyeshadow colors until your tri-color eyeshadow pan is full.

To use your scented DIY unicorn eyeshadow, apply as desired with an eyeshadow brush over your favorite eyeshadow primer for long lasting shimmer and color.

Can I sell my eyeshadows?

If you are wanting to sell your scented DIY unicorn eyeshadow palettes, there are a few things you should be aware of first. Currently glitter, mica-based pearlescent pigments, and other composite pigments used in cosmetics are NOT FDA approved for cosmetics.

The FDA is currently exercising discretionary enforcement of these color additives while they are in discussion over regulatory status and safety. You can find further discussion on this at Marie Gale’s blog here. Marie Gale is author of the book, Soap and Cosmetic Labeling: How to Follow the Rules and Regs Explained in Plain English, which I highly recommend for anyone selling handcrafted cosmetic and skin care products.

Then, to make your DIY unicorn body glitter, simply open and combine each package of the glitter and spangles from this sample pack.

Mix all of the glitter and spangles together in a 30 mL cosmetic jar. And that’s it! To use your unicorn body glitter, apply as desired using your favorite glitter primer or eyelash glue for heavier glitter applications. You can also mix it with a small amount of the glitter with aloe vera gel and apply it like a lotion for widespread glitter application.

While this glitter is non-toxic, it’s important to note that this is not a cosmetic glitter and therefore it should not be used on lips and eyes. Instead, stick to applying this DIY unicorn body glitter to your body and hair. (Don’t want to make it? You can shop for pre-made cosmetic unicorn glitter mixes on Etsy here.)

As this glitter is larger than cosmetic glitter, it can cause damage if used around eyes or on eyelids. So while this DIY unicorn body glitter may look fabulous on your face, it’s not worth the risk of getting glitter in your eyes! (I got a speck of glitter in my eye on accident in the midst of painting and applying glitter to unicorns and it actually tore my contact lens.)
