These natural hair care recipes are just what your hair ordered! Easy to make hair oil recipe for dry hair and a hair mask recipe for dry, damage and frizzy hair.

Dry, damaged or frizzy hair? These natural hair care recipes are just what your hair ordered! Learn how to make your own super effective hair oil recipe for dry hair suitable for daily use as well as a homemade hair mask recipe for intense conditioning weekly or monthly based on your hair’s needs.

Both of these natural hair care recipes are made using ingredients prized for their beneficial properties in hair care including coconut oil, hemp seed oil, and neem oil.

Coconut oil works beautifully as a hair conditioner and helps to prevent breakage as well as keep hair looking soft and shiny. The fatty acids in coconut oil are also helpful in preventing dandruff. And coconut oil is also believed to help prevent hair loss and premature graying.

Hemp seed oil contains gamma-linoleic acid which contributes to keratin formation. This helps to make hair stronger and healthier, improving the overall condition of your hair. The natural lipids, vitamin E and fatty acids found in hemp seed oil help to improve hair’s elasticity, volume and shine while also protecting hair from moisture loss. Because hemp seed oil is a dry oil, it doesn’t leave hair feeling greasy or weighed down.

Neem oil is wonderful at helping to prevent dandruff, eczema and other irritating scalp conditions. It also helps to prevent hair loss and promotes hair growth.

The other carrier oil used in these natural hair care recipes I’ve left up to you. My favorite choices are argan, jojoba and macadamia nut oils. All of these oils help to strengthen hair’s elasticity, maintain moisture, soften tresses, increase shine and tackle tough frizz. Simply choose your favorite based on the additional benefits they offer.

Homemade Hair Oil Recipe for Dry Hair

© Rebecca’s Soap Delicatessen

Ingredients:

.25 oz. refined or virgin coconut oil
.45 oz. hemp seed oil
.3 oz. macadamia nut, argan or jojoba oil
.05 oz. 100% organic neem oil
12 drops rosemary essential oil
3 drops rosemary antioxidant extract, optional

Instructions:

Using a digital scale weigh out the coconut oil into a small glass Pyrex measuring cup. Heat briefly in the microwave just until melted then weigh out the other carrier oils and stir into the hair oil. Using a dropper or transfer pipette add the rosemary essential oil and, if desired, the rosemary extract. (I recommend the rosemary extract to help lengthen the shelf life of the hemp seed oil. Otherwise you can keep this hair oil recipe for dry hair refrigerated for longevity.)

If you’re not a fan of rosemary essential oil you can substitute this essential oil with one of your favorite essential oil based on your hair type. Lavender, rosemary, lemon, geranium, cedarwood, thyme and clary sage essential oils are suitable for normal hair. Lavender, rosemary, sandalwood and geranium essential oils are great for dry hair and lavender, rosemary, lemon, peppermint and cypress essential oils are suitable for oily hair.

This hair oil recipe for dry hair yields about 1 oz. of product and will fit inside a 1 oz. glass bottle or plastic container. A little goes a long way!

To use simply pour a small amount into the palm of your hand then rub your hands together. Apply the hair oil to the ends of your hair first, then lightly rub your hands over the rest of your hair, then massage in. (Psst. You can also try this on beards as a natural homemade beard oil!)

I was inspired to create this particular hair oil recipe for dry hair after sampling the Obliphica Treatment Hair Serum. While my recipe doesn’t have sea buckthorn fruit in it, you can add 5-10 drops of sea buckthorn oil if you like. I loved that this added shine and tame frizz without weighing it down or making it look greasy.

If your hair is super damaged from winter weather or pool chlorine, dependent on the time of year of course, then you’ll also want to try my homemade hair mask recipe for dry hair. In addition to the oils used for my hair oil recipe for dry hair it also contains cocoa butter for its superior moisturizing properties as well as its effectiveness against dry, itchy scalp.

Ingredients:

.5 oz. refined or virgin coconut oil
.25 oz. macadamia nut, argan or jojoba oil
.25 oz. hemp seed oil
.1 oz. 100% organic neem oil
.4 oz. cocoa butter
18 drops rosemary essential oil
6 drops rosemary antioxidant extract, optional

Instructions:

To create this hair mask recipe for dry hair begin by using a digital scale to weigh out the cocoa butter. Melt in the microwave at reduced power or in a double boiler, then weigh out and add the remaining carrier oils. Use a dropper or transfer pipette to add the essential oil and rosemary extract.

Allow the hair mask to thicken, you can pop this in the fridge to speed up the process.

To use apply the hair mask evenly to hair concentrating on the ends first then working your way up. Leave the hair mask in for 10 minutes to overnight, then shampoo and condition as usual.

If you’re looking to switch to sulfate free shampoos to a cleansing conditioner, I highly recommend both Renpure Solutions Rosemary Mint Cleansing Conditioner for normal to dry hair and Macadamia Oil Flawless Cleansing Conditioner for super dry, damaged hair. My hair stays so much healthier and shiny since I switched to using a cleansing conditioner over traditional shampoo.

Winter Mint Homemade Moisturizing Hair Mask Recipe

This winter mint homemade moisturizing hair mask recipe is made with natural ingredients and delivers intense moisture to hair ravaged by winter's elements. It also makes a lovely homemade hand cream!

Winter can wreak havoc on even the healthiest of hair leaving you struggling to find new shampoos and conditioners to alleviate your dry tresses. Instead of switching up shampoo and conditioners this time around I decided instead to create a winter mint homemade moisturizing hair mask recipe to help counteract the effects of winter. Made using natural ingredients this homemade moisturizing hair mask recipe delivers intense moisture to hair ravaged by winter’s elements along with the fresh scent of spearmint and peppermint.

I was inspired to formulate this homemade moisturizing hair mask recipe by one of this month’s Birchbox samples of Amika’s Nourishing Mask For The Hair. This product conditions hair with the power of sea buckthorn berry and jojoba oil and provides intense conditioning for all hair types. I adapted their ingredients in my own recipe to provide more intense moisture by using less liquid and in lieu of the water – the first ingredient in their product – I used a smaller amount of aloe vera instead. I also made cocoa butter and argan oils the primary ingredients. Per your preference however, you can either use jojoba or argan oil or a combination of both when making this for yourself. Or even substitute the cocoa butter with shea butter or even mango butter.

This winter mint homemade moisturizing hair mask recipe is made with natural ingredients and delivers intense moisture to hair ravaged by winter's elements.

Winter Mint Homemade Moisturizing Hair Mask Recipe

Ingredients:

.75 oz. cocoa butter
.5 oz. jojoba oil or argan oil
.5 oz. aloe vera gel
.25 oz. emulsifying wax
3 ml dimethicone
1.5 ml sea buckthorn oil
.02 oz.Optiphen Plus (paraben free preservative)
12 drops spearmint essential oil
12 drops peppermint essential oil
5 drops vitamin E oil

Instructions:

Using a digital kitchen scale begin by weighing out the cocoa butter and the emulsifying wax into a 2 cup or larger glass Pyrex measuring cup. Melt at 60% power in the microwave until melted fully. (Alternately you can also use a double boiler.) Now weigh out the jojoba oil (or argan oil) and sea buckthorn oil and stir into the mixture.

Allow the mixture to cool to around 160°F then weigh out the preservative and stir into the mixture.

Using graduated transfer pipettes measure out and add the Dimethicone, vitamin E, and the essential oils. Stir to combine.

Now weigh out the aloe vera gel in a separate container and heat at reduced power in the microwave to the same temperature as the melted oils and cocoa butter. (You can also try coconut water in place of the aloe!) Add to the hair mask ingredients and mix using a stick blender until the mixture starts to thicken and become creamy.

Pour into a 2 oz. container and allow to thicken fully. The final product will be pliable and similar to the texture of play dough.

To use scoop out desired amount based on hair length and massage into hair until fully covered. (It will melt into your hair as you massage it in.) Leave on anywhere from 5 minutes to overnight then wash out as usual. For extremely damaged or “fried” hair use once or twice a week as a normal conditioner or massage a small amount into ends of hair as a leave in product.

DIY Beauty Hair Care Tips

I like to use this as a regular conditioner when needed and rinse then follow with Not Your Mothers Beach Babe Texturizing Sea Salt Spray, 8 oz after towel drying. I then massage in the sea salt spray into my and towel dry a second time. This adds volume while still leaving hair looking healthy and shiny and prevents the extra conditioning from weighing my fine hair down. I then air dry and then turn my head upside down and finger comb through.

To help keep your healthier on a regular basis without stripping it I also recommend using a cleansing conditioner instead of a regular shampoo. I’m currently crushing on Renpure Solutions Rosemary Mint Cleansing Conditioner. While not as lush as my favorite – Macadamia Oil Flawless Cleansing Conditioner – it is more affordable at just $6.99 a bottle. I’m also able to buy it locally at Target.

If you can’t get enough of how good this hair mask smells, I also found that this homemade moisturizing hair mask recipe also doubles as a wonderful hand cream!

Natural Hair Mask Recipe

This homemade natural hair mask recipe will rejuvenate your tresses in no time with it's combination of certified organic oils and shea butter.

Summer can really do a number on your hair. Whether you’re fighting off the frizz from high humidity, need to combat the damage from sun or the drying effects of pool chlorine, this homemade natural hair mask recipe will rejuvenate your tresses in no time with it’s combination of certified organic oils and shea butter. It works great in the winter too!

Natural Hair Mask Recipe

Ingredients:

2.5 oz. shea butter
1 oz. avocado oil
.25 oz. coconut oil
.25 oz. jojoba oil
.25 oz. argan oil

Optional Ingredients:

several drops of lavender essential oil
several drops of rosemary essential oil
several drops of geranium essential oil

Directions:

Using a digital kitchen scale weigh out the shea butter into a small to medium sized glass pyrex measuring cup. Heat in the microwave until melted, approximately one minute. Once melted, weigh out the avocado, coconut, jojoba and argan oils and stir into the shea butter. Finally, add several drops each of lavender, rosemary and geranium essential oil and stir thoroughly. These essential oils are suitable for both dry and normal hair types. If you generally have normal hair, you can also experiment with lemon, cedarwood, thyme and clary sage essential oils.

Once you’ve combined all of your ingredients, pour into a 4 oz. container of your choice and allow to cool completely. You can place your hair mask in the refrigerator to speed up this process if desired.

To use, simply apply enough of this natural hair mask to cover all of your tresses then comb through. Leave on for ten minutes to overnight, then wash and condition your hair as usual. Use as often as needed depending on your hair type to keep it shiny and moisturized. Alternately, you can also substitute this product for your regular conditioner – just use less! – and apply after shampooing, then rinse.

For extra dry or frizzy hair, apply a small amount – a little goes a long way! – to clean hair before styling to tame frizz and add shine.
