If your mom loves the outdoors then she’s sure to love this nature inspired, plant based lavender mint balm recipe. Perfect for hands, body and lips, this homemade lavender mint balm recipe is made from natural lavender and mint infused oil and raw, unfiltered beeswax. It makes a lovely and thoughtful handmade Mother’s Day gift idea and is ready in just a few hours!

DIY Lavender Mint Balm Recipe

Ingredients:

3 oz. lavender & mint infused jojoba oil
1 oz. natural beeswax
1 ml GMO-free vitamin E oil
1.5 ml lavender essential oil (optional, if you’d like more scent)

Instructions:

To create this lavender mint balm recipe you’ll to begin by first making your infused oil. You do this quickly by combining your herbs – in this case lavender flowers and mint –  in a small saucepan and covering with the jojoba oil. (Feel free to substitute another carrier oil of your choice.) Set the heat on warm or the lowest setting and allow to “stew” for 3-4 hours. Alternately, you can fill a pot about 2/3 of the way full with water and then place a mason jar with your herbs and oil into the water over low heat. (More on this here.)

Once you’ve infused your oil, strain it through cheesecloth. It’s now ready to use.

Using a digital scale weigh out the beeswax and melt in double boiler. Then weigh out the lavender and mint infused oil and stir into the melted beeswax. (Keep your leftover oil infusion for future projects by keeping sealed and storing in a cool, dark location.)

Next, use graduated transfer pipettes to measure out the vitamin E and, if desired, the lavender essential oil. Stir into the liquified beeswax and oil mixture then pour into glass salve jars or tins. Allow to cool completely then use as desired wherever your skin needs a little extra love!

Want to mix this natural balm recipe up a bit more? Try infusing the lavender flowers with lemon balm (another mint), lemongrass or even lemon verbena. Or add 1ml of lemongrass or lemon balm essential oil into the balm recipe.

She even bikes her orders to her local post office. While I won’t be biking orders any time soon, I was able to get Jes to contribute a DIY for you all. How to Make Custom Herbal Tea Blends and DIY Natural Home Remedies

BASIC TEA MAKING . secrets to my custom herbal tea blends .

It’s easy to make tea, even simply from anything you can find in your kitchen spice cabinet.

Here are some herbs and how they can help you during the winter or when you or a friend are in need.

1. BASIC TEA BASE: (2 parts)

Peppermint– great for cooling the body, for irritated lungs or to ease colds, awesome stomach calmer.

Ginger– for recipes that require more heat in the body, “to remove the cold”

Yerba Mate– caffeinated, “the green tea of South America”, great for the mind, circulation, contains medicinal properties.

(use can also use green tea, black tea, white tea, roobios, spearmint, chamomile, jasmine flowers)

2. ADD MEDICINE: (1 part total- choose one or a combo)

Orange Peels or Lemon Peels– heating, rich in vitamin C.

Hibiscus Flowers– heating, rich in vitamin C, turns the tea purple, helps “dry” the lungs of too much mucus.

Marshmallow root– cooling, “wet”, adds a coat of mucilage if you have a dry cold, cough, throat.

Gingko Leaves– heating, “the great circulator”, helps to move blood flow in the body.

Eucalyptus– heating, soothing vapors!

Back yard Medicine:

The following herbs I have used for helping colds and sore throats that can easily grow in a summer garden. It’s amazing medicine containing antibacterials, antimicrobials, etc: thyme, lemon balm, mints, hyssop, feverfew (a great cold fighter, use very little amounts), dandelion leaves (great cleanser, lots of vitamins and minerals), sage and catnip.

Kitchen Cabinet Medicine:

Any spice used can greatly help a cold, move menstruation, and help digestion of course!

I used a blend of rosemary leaves, lemon balm, cayenne to help someone with cramps and it worked!

Cayenne– heating, great expectorant if you have a stuffy nose, also an amazing antibacterial so it can purify the body when you have a cold or sore throat.

Any of these spices if just a touch added can help move a cold out of the body: cinnamon, cloves, black pepper, cardamom, fennel, etc.

3. ADD ROOTS: (½ to 1 part) roots are great for strength, help you cleanse, and or adjust to stress.

Eleuthero Root– (Siberian ginseng) great strength builder, helps adjust you to winter conditions and stress, was used in Japan after atomic bombings to help people recover.

Echinacea Root– great to help boost immunity right before you think you’re getting a cold.

Dandelion Root– a great overall cleanse for the kidneys and liver. I think for the entire body!

4. ADD SWEETNESS (optional): (a pinch)

Stevia Leaf– natural sweetener, 400 times sweeter than sugar, use only a half centimeter of leaf per cup, experiment and have fun, stevia is known to balance blood sugar levels and help diabetes.

Licorice Root– yummy sweetener, adds mucilage if you have dry conditions. Don’t use too much of this one either.

Or add Raw Honey!

BREWING: Boil fresh water, remove water from heat, pour into cup of herbs (I use a heaping teaspoon per serving), steep with cup covered for about 10 minutes, about 4 with the green tea family.

Quick Remedy if you don’t have an Apothecary:

Sore Throats or Colds- Chopped fresh ginger root simmered in a pot of water for 15 minutes. Remove from heat. Add a teaspoon of honey, half a lemon, and a pinch of cayenne per serving. You can also just use regular black or green tea instead of ginger.

Natural Allergy Relief from Stinging Nettles

Stinging Nettle Leaf Can Help with Allergies and Also Aid In Treating Other Illnesses and Conditions - Natural Herbal Home Remedy for AllergiesAllergy season seems to be especially bad this spring with more and more people suffering from allergies even while on allergy medications that are supposed to block symptoms and offer relief. So I decided to do a little bit of research to find alternative methods that are said to offer relief from seasonal allergies. One particularly interesting home remedy that I discovered and plan to try is stinging nettles. Nettle leaves can be steamed and eaten in salads and pastas or used in teas. Folklore has long praised their healing powers. Due to the natural composition of nettle, drinking stinging nettle tea can actually relieve allergic reactions to common pollen as well as relieve hives caused by allergic reactions to plants. Stinging nettles tea is often used to treat respiratory and urinary problems as well as aid in the recovery of conditions such as eczema, asthma, sinusitis and rhinitis and can help to diminish susceptibility to the common cold.

To create a tea comprised of stinging nettle leaves, prepare as you would any other herbal or loose leaf tea and pour 6-8 oz. of boiling water over one Tablespoon of dried organic nettle leaves. Allow to steep 10-15 minutes, sweeten if desired and enjoy. To create an infusion, boil one quart of water and pour over 1oz. of dried nettle leaves allowing to steep four hours to overnight, then strain and consume. Alternately, you can also purchase a natural nettle extract made with a 2:1 ratio from fresh nettle leaves. Or you can buy nettle leaf capsules if you dislike the taste of stinging nettle.

Even more interesting than helping to reduce nasal allergies, is the assumption that nettles can also help to naturally prevent osteoporosis. It’s believed that the silicone naturally present in stinging nettle helps to increase bone density. Crafting a hand blended tea using equal parts horsetail, oat straw, alfalfa and stinging nettle and drinking a cup everyday can offer preventative care. Simply steep one Tablespoon of blended herbs in 6-8 oz. of boiling water for 10 – 15 minutes, strain, sweeten if desired – I love the natural sweetness of the stevia plant – and drink.

Overall however, nettle leaves are rich in nutrients our bodies need and contain many essential minerals including iron, calcium, potassium and magnesium. Nettle is approved by the German Commission E for internal and external use in the support of inflammation. It is prized for it’s diuretic properties and it’s support of the lower urinary tract and can help to prevent and treat urinary tract infections. However, as with any herb, you should avoid stinging nettles if pregnant. As stinging nettle does act as a diuretic and can lower blood pressure, you should consult a doctor before using stinging nettle if you are taking diuretics or other drugs meant to lower blood pressure.
