When I was a little girl I used to pick the leaves from weeds to make play salads for my parents. What I didn’t realize then was that those leaves I picked were actually edible! It wasn’t until many years later, long after I stopped making dirt pots and grass dolls, that I discovered that the weed I was so fond of, was actually an herb. That herb was plantain.

Plantain is a common broad-leaf herb commonly mistaken for a weed. This healthy, hardy plant can be found in backyards across North America and is nutritionally similar to dandelion leaves. Used medicinally by cultures around the world, plantain is a common herbal home remedy for both nutritional and topical skin care applications.

What is Plantain?

Plantain is a common broad-leaf herb commonly mistaken for a weed. This healthy, hardy plant can be found in backyards across North America and is nutritionally similar to dandelion leaves. Used medicinally by cultures around the world, plantain is a common herbal home remedy for both nutritional and topical skin care applications.

Nutritional Benefits of Plantain

Plantain leaves are best consumed while still young and tender. They have a nutty asparagus like taste that is delicious when pan fried or when added to salads. A naturally healthy herb, plantain leaves offer the following nutritional support (source):

  • Maintains healthy cholesterol levels
  • Can offer relief from irritable bowel syndrome
  • Calms irritation from constipation or diarrhea
  • Offers relief from hemorrhoids
  • Helps with indigestion and ulcers
  • Supports healthy kidneys and bladder function

You don’t have to eat plantain leaves to enjoy their nutritional benefits, however. You can also get herbal support through tinctures for cleansing & detox. Or enjoy a natural herbal tea made using organic dried plantain leaves.

Plantain Infused Olive Oil! Plantains have anti-inflammatory,analgesic and anti-microbial properties. Because of this the plant is well suited at soothing insect bites and superficial wounds in addition to promoting healing. It also contains allantoin which is used to help with skin regeneration making it an excellent component in formulations created to help reduce the appearance of scars.

Skin Care Benefits of Plantain

In addition to nutritional support, plantain leaves are also lovely when infused in a carrier oil for topical skin care applications. There are a number of natural skin care products that would benefit from the inclusion of plantain herbal oil. These products include after sun moisturizers, burn relief balms, creams or lotions for eczema or dry skin, and anti-itch salves for insect and spider bites.

Dr. Christopher’s Stings and Bites, for example, is a top selling plantain ointment. It’s crafted with natural herb constituents like plantain leaf, extra virgin olive oil and beeswax to reduce and relieve the pain, swelling and itching caused by insect stings and bites.

Due to plantain’s herbal skin care properties, it’s often used as a key ingredient for the following topical skin care applications to promote skin health:

  • Minor burns and sunburns
  • Minor cuts, scratches and lesions
  • Rashes and skin inflammation
  • Psoriasis and eczema
  • Dry or chapped skin or lips

Formulating An Herbal Plantain Salve Recipe

Mountain Rose Herbs has a new roasted cocoa butter available that I really wanted to try. So I was really pleased when it arrived at my doorstep last week. This stuff smells amazing. I love that it’s suited for both food and cosmetic use.

As it smells so wonderful, however, I really wanted to create a product that would highlight the natural scent of the roasted cocoa butter. I also knew I wanted something to create a natural skin care product that would be suitable for seasonal skin care and gift giving. Therefore, in the end, I opted for crafting a simple plantain salve recipe with a cocoa mint scent.

I love the simplicity of my natural plantain salve recipe. It’s formulated using just five simple ingredients – roasted cocoa butter, plantain herbal oil, beeswax, rosehip seed oil and peppermint essential oil. The cocoa mint scent, of course, is naturally derived from the inclusion of the organic peppermint essential oil and roasted cocoa butter.

Lovingly crafted with ingredients like roasted cocoa butter and plantain herbal oil, this natural herbal salve is a must for your herbal apothecary. Use this multi-functional, natural skin care product on eczema prone or dry skin, minor cuts and scratches or as a natural lip balm for seasonal winter skin care.

Roasted Cocoa Butter

The roasted cocoa butter wafers from Mountain Rose Herbs aren’t deodorized. Therefore they retain their natural cocoa scent. Expeller pressed from the roasted seeds of the cocoa tree, these cocoa butter wafers are naturally rich in vitamin E. They can be combined with cocoa powder to make chocolate, but also make a nice addition to recipes for lip balms, body butters, homemade soaps and salves.

Plantain Herbal Oil

While plantain herbal oil is easy to make, you can also enjoy the convenience of buying pre-made plantain herbal oil. This is especially helpful if you’re wanting to make natural skin care products using plantain herbal oil right away. Or if plantain is out of season throughout the cold winter months.

I used plantain herbal oil from Mountain Rose Herbs for my simple plantain salve recipe. An emollient oil formulated using solar infused plantain olive oil and vitamin E, this herbal plantain oil is especially nourishing for dry hands and skin. Crafted with certified organic Plantago major leaves, this natural herbal oil is perfect for gardeners, wild harvesters, climbers – or anyone else who works with their hands frequently. I also like to use this herbal oil, as is, on my dog’s minor cuts and irritation for a simple and safe natural remedy for his skin.

Rosehip Seed Oil

As I have both maturing skin, as well as skin that tends to dry out more in the winter, I also used rosehip seed oil for my plantain salve recipe. While this may shorten the shelf life of your salve somewhat, I highly recommend this unique carrier oil for its essential fatty acids. Popular in natural anti-aging skin care recipes, rosehip seed oil offers marvelous hydration for dry skin and a quick absorption rate. It can also be used solo as a natural daily facial cleanser or hydrating oil.

Beeswax

A key ingredient in homemade salve recipes, beeswax gives this plantain salve recipe its thick, rich texture. It also acts as a natural skin protectant while still allowing skin to breathe. In addition to its skin protectant properties, beeswax is also a humectant (meaning it attracts water to hydrate skin) and helps to temporarily reduce and soothe itching.

The beeswax pastilles from Mountain Rose Herbs have a deep, golden color and aroma. Globally sourced from less-developed countries like South America and Africa, their beeswax helps sustain the local economy of these areas while using traditional (less-modern) processing techniques.

Peppermint Essential Oil

A sweet, candy-like scented peppermint, the organic peppermint oil from Mountain Rose Herbs helps bump my simple plantain salve recipe into peppermint patty like status. This naturally steam distilled, certified organic essential oil has a fresh, very minty, hot, herbaceous fragrance with a vegetative back note. Perfect for all types of recipes including cleaning sprays, perfumes, aroma mists and natural skin care, this is a truly aromatic essential oil.

Peppermint essential oils is commonly included in natural skincare recipes and homemade salves and balms for topical pain relief, its anti-itch properties and the cooling sensation. It also supports circulation and can calm acne inflammation.

Simple Plantain Salve Recipe

Ingredients:

1 oz. roasted cocoa butter
1 oz. plantain herbal oil
1 oz. beeswax
.5 oz. rosehip seed oil
20 drops peppermint essential oil

Instructions:

You will need a digital scale to weigh out the ingredients for my plantain salve recipe. In addition you’ll also need a one or two cup heat safe glass measuring cup (such as Pyrex) and a utensil to stir your salve. I typically use a fork. You’ll also need containers for your plantain herbal salve. I used 1 oz. metal tins with rolled edge covers.

Once you’ve gathered the ingredients and supplies you’ll need, you’re ready to begin.

Start by weighing out the roasted cocoa butter wafers and beeswax. Combine in a heat safe glass container. Then heat either on the stove top using the double boiler method or in your microwave at 30% power until halfway melted.

Next, weigh out the rosehip seed oil and the plantain herbal oil. Add these ingredients to the same container as the cocoa butter and beeswax. Continue gently heating the ingredients until all of the ingredients for the plantain salve recipe have completely melted.

Once melted, remove the plantain salve mixture from heat and stir to combine. Then stir in 20 drops of organic peppermint essential oils.

Now pour your plantain herbal salve evenly into five 1 oz. tins. Allow the salve to cool completely then pop on the lids and it’s ready to go.

To use, simply apply to affected area as desired and massage in. You can also keep my plantain salve tucked inside your purse to use a natural cocoa mint lip balm throughout the year.

If desired, you can decorate the lids of your tins. I used nature stickers from Art By Sharell to decorate the lids of my plantain salve containers. However, washi tape also makes a fun addition and makes a simple, yet pretty package decorating idea.

Should you wish to sell the products you make from my plantain salve recipe, there is important information that you need to know if you live in the United States. Not only do you need to follow all FDA guidelines for labeling your products, you’ll also need to refrain from making any medical claims in regards to said product. It can all be very confusing. However, Marie Gale has a great book, titled Soap and Cosmetic Labeling, that can help steer you in the right direction.

Halloween Isn’t Just for Kids!

Adulting sucks. At the same time, it’s can also be pretty amazing. As adults, we can steal our kid’s stash of Halloween candy and it’s somehow justified. Bully for us. And when else, other than Halloween, is it socially acceptable to wear the equivalent of a swimsuit for a night out on the town? (Which actually happened once. Some dude froze his butt off as Michael Phelps in nothing but speedos and goggles one year.)

Point being, just because we’re all grown up doesn’t mean we can’t still have fun. Halloween is kind of the perfect time of year for that. I can’t think of a better way to spend a holiday filled with mystery than visiting my favorite haunts with my friends.

My friends are some of the best people out there. Not only do they help me through the struggles and chaos life seems intent on throwing our way, we also share some amazing moments together. So what better way to remind your friends (and co-workers) that, they too, are an important piece of your life than with a simple handmade Halloween gift.

Inside My Halloween Solid Lotion Bar Recipe

These easy Halloween solid lotion bars are not only cute, they’re also super practical. If you have dry hands in the winter, then you know how important it is to have a quality hand cream on hand 24/7. (Especially if you’re washing your hands 20x a day to fend off those monstrous cold & flu germs.) These lotion bars are perfect for moisturizing and protecting your dry skin.

They don’t stop there, however. I also scented my Halloween solid lotion bars with a calming blend of cedarwood and lavender essential oils. So you can keep calm and carry on no what your work day throws at you.

As with some of my more recent skin care recipes, my Halloween solid lotion bar recipe utilizes bacuri butter as one of three primary ingredients. This is what will give your Halloween shaped lotion bars their dark color. Additionally, it also ensures a fast absorption rate. After all, no one wants greasy fingerprints on their keyboard.

I’ve also included beeswax to solidify the bar and to protect skin. While buriti oil – a carrier oil rich in fatty acids as well as vitamins C, E and pro-vitamin A – helps to rebuild, moisturize and rehydrate skin cells. Additionally, buriti oil also helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, promotes healing (bye-bye cracked knuckles!) and protects skin from free radicals while also increasing skin’s elasticity.

The glitter? Well, that’s just the icing on the cake. I used eco-friendly, biodegradable cosmetic glitter so it’s safe for the environment. You can choose to add just a dash of glitter to the tops of your lotion bars. Or, include glitter in the melted ingredients when you make my Halloween solid bar lotion recipe for an easy way to add some sparkle to your skin. (Don’t worry! While the color of this lotion bar is brown, it goes on clear!)

Ingredients:

2 oz. bacuri butter
2 oz. beeswax pastilles
2.25 oz. buriti oil
.15 oz. cedarwood essential oil
.1 oz. lavender essential oil
biodegradable glitter, to suit

Instructions:

As with the majority of my skin care recipes, you will need a digital scale to weigh out the ingredients. In addition, you will also need a Halloween silicone mold of your choice. (I used this one.) My Halloween solid lotion bar recipe made four lotion bars – one each of a pumpkin, a bat, a skull and a ghost.

Begin by weighing out the bacuri butter, beeswax and buriti oil. Combine in a heat proof Pyrex measuring cup or similar. Gently heat until the beeswax and bacuri butter have melted using either the double boiler method or in your microwave at 30% power.

Once melted, remove from heat. Then weigh out the essential oils and stir into the lotion bar ingredients you just melted.

Next, lightly dust the inside of your mold with bio-glitter. (I used this purple fuschia glitter.) If desired, you can also stir some glitter into your melted ingredients. (You’ll just need to wait a little longer before pouring to allow the lotion to hit that point just before it starts to solidify, then stir again prior to pouring into your mold. Otherwise all of the glitter just sinks the bottom.)

Now pour your ingredients into your mold. (I recommend placing your mold on a cutting board prior to pouring. This way, you can easily transfer your mold to the refrigerator for faster cooling times.)

Once your Halloween solid lotion bars have fully solidified, pop them out of the mold then package as desired. These look great in glassine bags or in PET plastic amber jars. I used a 4 oz. amber jar from SKS Bottle & Packaging for the small pumpkin and sugar skull solid bars. The bat, however, needed the 8 oz. sized jar

I  then added Halloween stickers to the lids of my containers to decorate them. Although, washi tape would be super cute too! You could use it either on the lid or around the diameter of the jar. I also thought about making an emulsified sugar scrub or foaming bath butter, filling the jar with it, then nestling a solid lotion bar on top. Tell me what you think!

The perfect pairing for seasonal gift giving. Create the perfect DIY holiday gifts by combining a bar of handmade soap with a soap dish from Soap Bar Lounge! Regardless of the season, if you have dry skin, then you probably avoid using products that irritate your condition. For me, that means using a homemade soap bar in the shower. I also keep homemade soaps by the sink, one in the kitchen and one in the bathroom, where they get used most often. Not only is washing my hands important for sanitary reasons (no one wants to accidentally ingest salmonella) but it can also prevent the spread of cold and flu germs.

Of course, washing your hands on a regular basis can leave them feeling tight and dry – especially as cold weather hits. So I formulated a Brazilian triple butter soap recipe to counteract the drying effects of hand washing. It’s also great as we move into the cold, dry air that’s common throughout fall and winter.

Help your soaps stay dry and last longer with soap dishes from Soap Bar Lounge. Their patented design allows for air flow around the soap as well as a way for your soap to drain - without the water ending up on the counter. So your soaps are able to dry between uses and last longer than they would otherwise. Pair a Soap Bar Lounge soap dish with a bar of homemade soap for a simple gift idea all year round.

To help my homemade soap bars last longer, I’ve started using soap dishes from Soap Bar Lounge. As you may know, when homemade soaps sit in a pool of water, or are unable to dry out between uses, they can become soft and mushy. When this happens, soap starts to disappear a lot faster with each use. The soap dishes from Soap Bar Lounge, however, prevent this from happening.

Their patented soap dish design allows for air flow around your homemade soaps as well as a way for your soap to drain. Even better, because there are no holes in the bottom of these dishes, you don’t have to worry about water draining onto your clean countertop. As a result, your soaps not only last longer, your countertop stays clean!

I really love that Soap Bar Lounge soap dishes are made right here in the USA using high quality, glazed ceramic. This means they not only look great, but they’re also easy to clean. The modern design and range of colors ensures that your new soap dish not only functions as intended, but it also looks great wherever you decide to use it. The colors are also easy to incorporate into your seasonal or holiday decor.

For seasonal gift giving, simply pair a Soap Bar Lounge soap dish with a bar of homemade soap. This creates a simple, yet beautiful gift idea that’s perfect for housewarming gifts, hostess gifts and holiday gifts. And, to save you money, the soap dishes  from Soap Bar Lounge ship free anywhere within the United States. Brazilian Triple Butter Soap Recipe for natural holistic winter skin care. This skin conditioning homemade soap makes a wonderful DIY seasonal holiday gift when paired with a ceramic soap dish from Soap Bar Lounge!

Instructions:

You’ll need to follow the basic cold process soapmaking method to craft these ultra conditioning, Brazilian triple butter soaps. You can find a refresher course on making homemade soap from scratch here. This means ZERO aluminum and heat safe containers and utensils. You’ll also need an immersion blender and a digital scale to weigh out ingredients. Additionally, you should also take safety measures to protect your eyes and skin when working with lye.

To make my Brazilian triple butter soap recipe, begin by measuring out 4.8 fluid oz. of distilled water into a heat safe container or pitcher. Then, use a digital scale to weigh out the lye, called for in the recipe, into a separate container. In a well, ventilated area, slowly pour the lye (granules or flakes) into the water. Then mix until all of the lye has dissolved and set aside.

Now weigh out the soapmaking oils and butters into a large heat safe container or stainless steel pot. (I like to weigh out the solid  and semi-solid butters first, then follow with the liquid carrier oils.)

Plus discover what makes Soap Bar Lounge ceramic soap dishes the best option for your homemade soaps!

Heat the soapmaking butters and oils called for in my Brazilian triple butter soap recipe until they have melted. You can do this by heating the ingredients in a non-metal container at 30% power in the microwave or on the stovetop over low heat in a stainless steel container.

Once the butters and oils have melted, set them aside to cool. When your soapmaking fats and lye-water have cooled to around 95°-100°F, you can start making the actual soap.

To do this, slowly pour the lye-water into the liquid oils and butters. Then use an immersion blender to combine the ingredients until you reach a light trace. At this point, you can weigh out and add your choice of fragrance oil, if desired, to the soap batter. As my boyfriend really wanted a more masculine scented soap, I scented my triple butter soap recipe with a sandalwood fragrance oil. Alternately, you can also use essential oils for a natural fragrance at a usage rate of up to .8 oz. by weight.

Mix the soap batter again to incorporate your fragrance into the soap. Then, once your soap reaches a medium trace, pour it into your mold. (I used this 6-cavity rectangle silicone mold.)

Cover your soap with parchment paper or plastic wrap, then set aside overnight. You should be able to unmold your soap bars the next day. Once unmolded, set your soaps aside in a cool, dry location to cure for four to six weeks. (My soaps did a crazy partial gel so some of my ends are lighter than the rest of the bar.)

Vintage & Handmade Father's Day Gift Ideas. Give Dad a truly special gift this year by giving the gift of handmade. This thoughtful collection of vintage & handmade Father's Day gift ideas are perfect for reminding your dad just how much he means to you.

There have been a lot of times throughout my life that I have, unfortunately, taken my parents for granted. But being who they are, when I’ve needed them, they’ve been there for me no matter what.

Yesterday my dad had heart surgery to remove a 100% blockage in an artery. As with all surgeries there’s a risk. So there I was hoping for the best, yet preparing myself for the worst. Luckily my Dad made it out of surgery without a hiccup. He comes home today.

Recently it’s really hit home that I don’t know what I’d do if I lost either of my parents. I can’t imagine them not being there for me. So I’ve been making the effort to try to visit more. I’ve also been working on trying to slow my roll and appreciate all of the small things that life has to offer.

If you’ve lost your father, my heart is with you. However, if you dad is still kicking, doing all those amazing things that dads do, then I hope he has a wonderful Father’s Day.

Following is my collection of vintage & handmade Father’s Day gifts to help you shop for the perfect Father’s Day gift this year. These gifts are a wonderful gesture to him for all the memorable things he’s done for you throughout your life.

While this project is easy enough to complete solo, I highly recommend getting a friend (or friends) involved. Not because this project is difficult to do, but because it’s a great way to beat the last of those winter blues.

This past winter was tough on me. Like many of you, in addition to a small bout of seasonal depression, I was also dealing with my own set of trials and tribulations. This included moving over Christmas weekend into my best friend’s house and ending a marriage that lasted a brief six days shy of six months. While not my best moment, great friends and a terrific holistic therapist helped me through it.

One of the things that I wasn’t quite up to during this time period was crafting. So while I tried to keep up with sharing new skin care recipes on the blog, there were no DIY craft nights with the ladies through the entire winter season. Those nights are something I have truly missed. So my first DIY night this spring was needle felting for beginners.

My friend, Hillary, actually hosts a local Wine & Art Wednesday. So while I technically attended a course to learn needle felting, it was a lot like a DIY night at home with some of my favorite people. My friend and roommate, Bambi, also accompanied me and we had an absolute blast!

I’ll admit I was a bit intimidated by needle felting at first. It looked hard, and therefore I mistakenly assumed it would be hard. It wasn’t. By beginning with a DIY needle felted wine bag, it made the process of learning needle felting even easier. As you’re working with a flat, rather than a three dimensional surface, it also takes less time.

Of course, realizing this made me kind of regret giving away that needle felting kit for beginners I’d bought some time back after promising myself to learn new things. (I am now shaking my fist at my own procrastination.)

While playing with sharp objects and drinking wine was probably not the best choice, no one was hurt in the making of this project. So grab a friend or two, split the cost of materials and make your own DIY needle felted wine bags for gift giving.

Getting Started

As Wine & Art Wednesday is only a two hour class it was impossible to learn everything there is to know about needle felting in such a short time frame. Hillary covered just the bare bones basics with us.

However, I found as the night went on, I learned more about what techniques and needles did what simply by using them. So don’t feel like you need to become a book expert on needle felting for beginners prior to getting started. Besides, sometimes it’s a lot more fun to just dive right in.

Tips for Making Your DIY Needle Felted Wine Bag

Here are some basics to needle felting that will make the process of creating your DIY needle felted wine bag more enjoyable.

  • Use a stencil or cookie cutter to easily create shapes.
  • Pull the needle out of the wool in the same direction it went in to avoid breaking your needle.
  • Work around the side of your object to firm up its shape rather then from the top. Insert your needle at an angle to do this, but be sure to pull it back out at the same angle.
  • Occasionally pull your wine bag gently apart to keep the wool from sticking to the  other side or place the foam pad/cushion inside the bag rather than under it.
  • Be sure to check out these 5 common needle felting mistakes before getting started.
  • Once you get the knack of needle felting, purchase a book for more information to hone your needle felting skills.
  • Don’t be afraid to experiment. If you don’t like what you have, you can always start over. My philosophy is that a mistake is never a mistake. It’s a learning experience.
  • Use your friends for ideas. Friends are great with helping you execute your vision because they know you so well. You can also help one another out as you learn new tricks of the trade together.

What To Do:

Begin by deciding on a design you’d like to create for your DIY needle felted wine bag. Then choose the colors of roving wool you’d like to use. Don’t be afraid to mix and match and even blend different colors of wool together. Once you’ve decided on your design – the hardest part! – gather the materials and tools you will be using.

You’ll begin by using a smaller gauge needle to get started on your DIY needle felted wine bag. As you move through this project, you will switch over to a larger gauge needle for detail work and finishing off your pieces. A 36 gauge needle is the most commonly used, however finer wools such as merino wool may require a 38 gauge needle. (You can find a guide to felting needles here.)

Needle Felting - The Penetration Stroke (Because it's funny, dammit!)

Hillary provided us with some informational teaching materials on needle felting, including information on felting needles, during the course. We didn’t really give those more than a cursory glance, however. Hillary gave us the basics and off we went. But we did gain some amusement from them. (I know. I know. Sometimes I have the sense of humor of a twelve year old boy.)

Once you’re ready to begin, pull apart the roving wool with your hands until it’s fluffy. You can then blend several colors of wool together if you like.

Now place the wine bag on top of foam pad. Follow with the cookie cutter you’ve chosen for your first shape. Then fill the cookie cutter with the color(s) of wool you’ve chosen to use. Use a smaller gauge needle in short, stabbing up and down motions on the wool inside the cookie cutter. Continue until the wool starts to firm up and create a more solid shape.

Once you have the basic shape of the wool down, remove the cookie cutter and use a larger gauge needle on the top of the wool to felt it further. Then use the needle gently along the sides, making sure to pull the needle out the same direction it went in, to further define the edges of your shape.

You can also add wool in the same manner free hand to create your own unique elements.
