In addition, turmeric, a powerful antioxidant, contains curcumin which is believed to have anticancer properties. There have been over 2000 studies and a phase 1 cancer trial in the UK that have shown curcumin can help to prevent several forms of cancer including breast, lung, stomach, liver, and colon cancer. As there is a history of breast cancer in my family, turmeric has become a part of my daily diet.

Since drinking my turmeric ginger apple cider vinegar tonic daily in conjunction with switching to an aluminum free natural deodorant – this is the deodorant I make and use – my symptoms from fibromyalgia have diminished quite significantly. Most days I feel 99% better than when I was first diagnosed.

My Backstory.

Originally, I began drinking kombucha on the advice of an acquaintance who indicated it might help with my fibro symptoms. And it did. But I later switched to drinking apple cider vinegar instead.

Apple cider vinegar had fewer calories and less sugar than kombucha which worked better with my body’s needs. My drink of choice was Kevita’s Turmeric Ginger Cleansing Probiotic Apple Cider Vinegar Tonic. However, drinking this everyday cost around $100 a month. Obviously, not willing to give up how much better I’ve felt since adding this turmeric ginger apple cider vinegar drink to my diet, I finally decided to make my own.

Following are two great turmeric ginger apple cider vinegar recipes for you to try out!

Turmeric Ginger Apple Cider Vinegar Tonic Recipe

Ingredients:

8 fluid oz. natural 100% apple juice
12 fluid oz. filtered water
3 Tablespoons Bragg’s Organic Apple Cider Vinegar
1 Tablespoon organic unsulphured blackstrap molasses
1 teaspoon ginger root powder
1/2 teaspoon turmeric root powder

Instructions:

You’ll want to use Bragg’s Organic Apple Cider Vinegar as it contains the mother and all the good probiotics for your gut. Store it at room temperature and shake before using. You do NOT want to heat your apple cider vinegar as it will kill all the good “bugs.”

Begin my mixing the apple cider vinegar with the blackstrap molasses. Otherwise when you add your molasses it will all sink to the bottom.

I love the flavor the molasses adds to this recipe. You can substitute the molasses with local raw honey or even manuka honey if you like for a milder taste. I prefer the molasses not only for the taste, but also because it contains vitamin B6. After having shingles I can tell you that vitamin B6 can help to deter getting shingles as well as the recurrence of shingles. My patient information sheet from the doctor even instructed me to take 50mg of vitamin B6 twice a day for two months.

Once you’ve mixed the apple cider vinegar and molasses together, measure out the other ingredients and mix in a glass jar or container. (I use an ello Elsie 20 oz. BPA Free Classic Milk Jar that I bought from Target to mix mine.) If you have access to fresh ginger, you can use a microplane grater to grate fresh ginger instead of using powdered.

Feel free to use more turmeric and/or ginger as desired to suit your taste. Or to also make other variations of this recipe such as using tea instead of apple juice. You can also try adding a dash of cinnamon!

If you aren’t drinking your turmeric ginger apple cider vinegar tonic right away, be sure to keep it stored in the fridge until use!

Blueberry Turmeric Apple Cider Vinegar Tonic Recipe

Ingredients:

8 fluid oz. natural blueberry juice
12 fluid oz. filtered water
3 Tablespoons Bragg’s Organic Apple Cider Vinegar
1 Tablespoon raw local honey or manuka honey
1 teaspoon ginger root powder
1/2 teaspoon turmeric root powder

Instructions:

Like my previous recipe, you’ll need to mix the apple cider vinegar with the honey to dilute the honey. Then combine all of the ingredients in a glass container and shake well to combine.

I created this body butter recipe with my grandmother in mind. My grandmother is now in her mid-80’s and her health has gotten worse recently. This of course means a lot of doctor visitors, getting blood drawn or being hooked up to IV’s and some hospital stays. Inevitably this has caused some pretty nasty bruising. In addition to the bruising, aches and pains are also more common. So for this recipe I combined magnesium hydroxide and arnica infused sweet almond oil into a wonderfully soothing and beautifully scented body butter.

Did you know?

It’s common to have low levels of magnesium in your body. Unfortunately magnesium is the fourth most abundant mineral in your body and is necessary for over 300 reactions within your body. So low levels of magnesium can cause some health issues to arise. Fortunately, it’s easier to increase your magnesium levels than you might think. As magnesium has the ability to be absorbed through skin, a topical body butter is the perfect way to increase your magnesium intake.

So why is magnesium so important?

Magnesium is important for many reasons. It helps to increase rigidity and flexibility in your bones – which is especially important as you age – regulate and normalize blood pressure, increase bioavailability of calcium, prevent congestive heart failure, promote restful sleep, ease muscle cramps and spasms, decrease insulin resistance, end cluster and migraine headaches, enhance circulation, aid in weight loss and so many other common health ailments. More importantly it also helps to ease fibromyalgia and chronic pain. Which is something I can fully attest to. (Discover more benefits of magnesium here.)

With these things in mind and the more frequent medical care my grandmother needs, I thought that magnesium and arnica would make an incredibly suited body butter for my grandmother.

In addition, I also included neem oil in my homemade magnesium and arnica body butter recipe. Neem oil has analgesic properties and is also a strong anti-viral. I had used neem oil previously in a lavender body butter I’d made for my grandmother a few Christmases back for her shingles flare up. She indicated that the body butter I made her had helped her immensely, therefore I really wanted to include neem oil in this recipe as well. (And yes, neem oil smells pretty rank. But I pinky swear that the lavender and blood orange essential oils I use in my recipe to scent the body butter completely mask the smell. Plus they smell AMAZING together!)

Arnica is traditionally used as an external herbal medicine for bruises. It is approved by the German Commission E for topical use when applied for inflammation, bruises and joint pain.

In anticipation of creating my homemade magnesium and arnica body butter recipe I infused arnica flowers in sweet almond oil for just over two months using the solar infusion method. (Herbs, oil and a sunny window.) If you don’t want to wait on a solar herbal oil infusion, you can speed up the process using heat. One way to do this is to make your herbal oil infusion using the crock pot oil infusion method.

To do this simply fill a mason jar with dried arnica flowers and cover with sweet almond oil. Next, place the mason jar in the crock pot half filled with water so that the jar is 3/4th of the way covered. (You can place a tea towel on the bottom of the crockpot with the mason jar on top if needed to keep the jar from moving around.) Turn the crock pot onto low heat and allow the arnica and oil filled mason jar to infuse for 10-12 hours. Remove the mason jar from the crockpot and strain the oil from the arnica flowers. Then transfer the oil into a glass amber bottle for storage.

Alternately, if you are pressed for time, you can also purchase solar infused arnica herbal oil from Mountain Rose Herbs here. While the arnica in this product is infused in olive oil, it is still a suitable substitution for sweet almond oil.

Magnesium and Arnica Body Butter Recipe

Ingredients:

3 oz. refined shea butter
.25 oz. natural cocoa butter
.5 oz. arnica infused sweet almond oil
.2 oz. magnesium hydroxide powder
.1 oz. 100% natural neem oil
.1 oz. emulsifying wax
.1 oz. arrowroot powder
2 mL lavender essential oil
1.5 mL blood orange essential oil

Instructions:

My homemade magnesium and arnica body butter recipe yields one 4 oz. jar of product.

Using a digital scale, weigh out the shea butter, cocoa butter and emulsifying wax into a medium sized Pyrex glass measuring cup. Heat at 40% power in the microwave until melted. (Alternately, you can use a double boiler.)

Now weigh out the neem oil and arnica infused sweet almond oil and stir into the melted butters and wax.

Next, using a graduated transfer pipette, measure out the lavender essential oil and stir into your body butter ingredients. Do the same with the blood orange essential oil, using a fresh pipette to avoid cross contamination.

Now weigh out the arrowroot powder and magnesium hydroxide powder and whisk into the body butter until it is thoroughly combined.

Pour your magnesium and arnica body butter into a clean, sterilized 4 oz. glass salve jar. Allow to cool completely.

Once your body butter has cooled and completely solidified, screw on the cap and label as desired.

Pain Relief Massage Oil Recipe

Ingredients:

1 fl. oz. sweet almond oil
12 drops chili seed essential oil
6-8 drops fresh ginger essential oil

Instructions:

Use a small funnel to add one fluid ounce of sweet almond oil to a one ounce glass bottle. (Pictured are both a one ounce amber glass bottle with dropper and a one ounce frosted glass bottle with a black pump. You can find and purchase both of these glass bottles from SKS Bottle & Packaging.)

Tip: Make this pain relief massage oil even more amazing by infusing arnica flowers in your sweet almond oil and strain prior to use.

Using a dropper or a disposable plastic transfer pipette, add the drops of both of your essential oils to the bottle with the sweet almond oil. Use a fresh pipette for each essential oil to avoid cross contamination.

Screw the lid onto your bottle of pain relief massage oil and shake well to mix.

To use, apply a small amount to affected area and massage into sore muscles and joints as desired. (Be sure to do a patch test first!)

Take care to avoid getting the massage oil in your eyes, mucous membranes and other sensitive areas as the chili seed essential oil will cause it to burn like the dickens.

Once your massage is complete, wash hands well with hot soap and water.

Ingredients:

2 oz. witch hazel extract
2 oz. catnip or peppermint hydrosol
2 oz. distilled water
1 mL (20 drops) lemon eucalyptus essential oil
1 mL (20 drops) lavender essential oil
1/2 mL (10 drops) lemongrass essential oil
1/2 mL (10 drops) Virginia cedarwood essential oil

Instructions:

To make this natural insect repellent spray recipe you’ll need to begin by using a digital scale to weigh out the witch hazel, catnip hydrosol and distilled water. Combine into a 6 – 8 oz. spray bottle using a funnel. (I used this Boston round bottle with mini spray trigger from SKS Bottle & Packaging.) Using a graduated transfer pipette or dropper, add the essential oils to the bottle then screw on the trigger sprayer. Shake well to combine the ingredients and again before each use.

To extend the shelf life of this natural insect repellent spray and to help you and your loved ones cool down on a hot summer day, store this in the refrigerator between uses. And don’t forget to pack it for your next hiking or camping trip!

Does your dog’s breath kill trees from a hundred paces? Then perhaps consider this DIY natural fresh breath gel for dogs.

Let me begin by stating I have a miniature dachshund. His name is Jasper. And like most dachshunds he has some of the worst breath ever. No, seriously. Ever. That said I’ve tried all kinds of things to freshen his breathe including all those silly tooth brushing bones and minty dog treats. And while they might help keep tarter and plaque at bay, they seem to do absolutely nothing for the state of his breath.

Over Christmas my brother told me about a tarter control and fresh breath gel for dogs that he had been using. Not only did it work great on his dogs, but it also had neem oil as one of the ingredients. As neem oil was one of my favorite discoveries of the past year I decided I had to try this out. But instead of buying a gel tarter control and breath freshener I decided to try making something similar with ingredients I already have in my stash of soapmaking ingredients.

I looked at two popular products when trying to decide which natural ingredients to use. Tropiclean Fresh Breath Plaque Remover Pet Clean Teeth Gel is one such popular product. It’s made with Purified Water, Natural Derived Alcohol, Natural Mint, Glycerin, Natural Cleanser, Carbopol, Chlorophyllin, and Green Tea Leaf Extract. The other is Nutri-Vet’s Tartar-Defense Spray for Dogs which is made with Water, Grain Alcohol, Peppermint Oil, Grapefruit Seed Extract, Rosemary Oil, Thyme Oil, and Neem Oil.

For my DIY fresh breath gel for dogs I sort of combined select ingredients from both of these products. I was leery about using grain alcohol – aka moonshine – and water in my recipe as this was basically an “edible” product and I wasn’t entirely sure what to use an emulsifier to keep the oil and glycerin mixed with the alcohol without using propylene glycol. (I also wasn’t entirely sure about rubbing alcohol on my dog’s teeth.) So instead I simply used natural vegetable glycerin as the main base. This still encourages dogs to lick their teeth like the commercial brands to help prevent tarter. But as my main concern was fresh breath and getting my dog not to run and hide when I went to rub it on his teeth, I chose to use glycerin which makes for a sweet alcohol free base that can be easily administered.

I also used neem oil for it’s awesome anti-bacterial properties and essential oils for their anti-bacterial and breath freshening properties. Additionally my DIY fresh breath gel for dogs also incorporates liquid grapefruit seed extract for its anti-oxidant properties – an ingredient that Nutri-Vet states on their product helps to reduce inflammation – and grape seed oil. There are a few easy substitutions you can make, however, if you don’t have a product on hand or for specific properties you’re after. For example, you could easily sub the grape seed oil – an edible oil which I chose for the pleasant flavor – with coconut oil which is used in the oil pulling method to remineralize and strengthen teeth. (I used refined coconut oil as it has a lower melt point than unrefined coconut oil.) You could also easily play around with the essential oils to see which ones work best for your dog’s breath and/or his taste buds.

Fresh Breath Gel for Dogs Recipe

Ingredients:

.8 oz. organic vegetable glycerin
.1 oz. liquid grapefruit seed extract
.1 oz. grape seed oil (or refined coconut oil, melted)
6 drops 100% pure neem oil
6 drops rosemary essential oil
6 drops spearmint (or peppermint) essential oil

Instructions:

If you don’t have grapefruit seed extract you can substitute it with more of the grape seed oil or with refined coconut oil. You can also try using 4 drops rosemary eo, 4 drops peppermint eo and 2 drops thyme eo in lieu of 6 drops each of the rosemary and spearmint essential oils.

Using a digital kitchen scale weigh out the glycerin, grapefruit seed extract and grape seed oil into a small glass jar or bowl. Use a plastic transfer pipette or glass dropper to add the drops of neem oil and essential oils. (If your neem oil has solidified due to cold temperatures simply place the bottle into a bowl of hot water until it liquifies.) Mix with a utensil to combine.

Now use a funnel to combine in a 1 oz. amber glass bottle with a dropper. Shake well once more for final measure.

To use add a few drops of this fresh breath gel for dogs to your finger or a toothbrush and rub onto your dogs teeth.
