If you’ve ever had a headache so bad you couldn’t function, you aren’t alone. Approximately 45 million Americans suffer from headaches every year. That’s literally one in six people. More important to note, is that women suffer from headaches more than men. So just what is causing all these headaches? And are there natural headache relief remedies that actually work?

I get headaches at least once a month. It’s kind of par for the course. Living with fibromyalgia is not always easy, but it is manageable. And managing frequent headaches is just part of that process. Typically I get a visual migraine when my body is going through hormone changes due to my monthly cycle. However, I get tension headaches a lot more often. And they can be brutal.

As I’m writing this in fact, I’ve been in the midst of a chronic tension headache that’s going on it’s third week. While it’s eased up and actually responds to medication at this point, I’m still struggling to not only find relief but to make it disappear. Because let’s face it, pain affects your quality of life.

What are tension headaches?

The most common headaches that women get are tension headaches. Typically caused by stress and tension in the back and neck, these headaches result in a dull pain, pressure and tightness either in the back of the head or around the forehead. Tension headaches usually start gradually, worsening throughout the day. While they don’t interfere with vision and balance in the way that migraines do, they can last for long periods of time, for days and even weeks. So while a normal tension headache doesn’t generally disrupt daily activities, a chronic headache can, and often does interfere in other ways.

I find that chronic tension headaches are particularly tasking on my emotional well being. As they can cause disrupted sleep as well as intense pain, any type of chronic pain will wear on one’s constitution. This can lead to irritability, tiredness, trouble concentrating, trouble sleeping, muscle aches and mild sensitivity to light or noise in addition to the pain. Typically tension headaches will last anywhere from a half hour to several days. When this happens, these headaches are called episodic tension headaches. Episodic tension headaches last fifteen days or less. However, tension headaches that last beyond this time frame are referred to as chronic tension headaches.

Up to 80% of adults in the United States will have a tension headache at some point in their lives. While approximately 3% of the population will experience chronic daily tension headaches. As women, we are twice as likely to experience tension headaches than men.

I think, that as women, we are expected to handle more emotional weight than men. Combined with the stressors involved with raising a family, working and constant hormone changes throughout our lives, we, as women, often take on more than we can handle either by necessity or a sense of duty. In turn, this has consequences on both our emotional and physical well being. As such, tension headaches are one of the ways our bodies respond to overwhelming stress.

How to reduce your chance of developing a tension headache.

Because tension headaches are caused by stress, you can reduce your chances of developing a tension headache by avoiding the triggers that cause them. Typical triggers that cause the muscle tension that leads to tension headaches include anxiety, not getting enough rest, poor posture, anxiety, fatigue and hunger as well as low levels of iron. You can also develop tension headaches from overuse of certain medications.

As someone with fibromyalgia, muscle tension is often a daily part of my life in addition to chronic pain. Therefore those of us who have fibromyalgia often experience tension headaches on a regular, if not chronic, basis. Through my own personal experience, I’ve found that my chronic headaches often go hand-in-hand with fibro fog – a condition that is demonstrated by decreased energy levels, fatigue and difficulty thinking clearly.

Natural Headache Relief Remedies for Tension Headaches

For those of us who also experience migraines, you are likely aware that taking magnesium supplements can help to thwart migraines from presenting. However there is little evidence that magnesium has an effect on tension headaches. So what natural headache relief remedies do work for tension headaches?

The typical treatment for a tension headache is often over the counter medication. However, as mentioned earlier, frequent use of over the counter medication to treat tension headaches – such as Advil or Tylenol – can lead to rebound headaches. Additionally, over the counter pain medications have their own set of side effects. Overuse of ibuprofen can cause upset stomach while acetaminophen is terrible for your liver. So while your first instinct for treating your tension headache may be to grab a bottle of over the counter pain medication, your body will experience fewer side effects by instead turning to one of these natural headache relief remedies.

Natural Headache Relief Remedy: Stress Management

Learning how to better manage stress in your life can help you avoid tension headaches in the future. Just as reducing the stress you’re under, can ease a tension headache that’s already in play. You should also try to get an adequate amount of sleep each night in addition to getting regular exercise and trying to avoid triggers wherever possible.

Natural Headache Relief Remedy: Acupuncture

For many people, acupuncture is another option for a natural headache relief remedy. Acupuncture is beneficial at not only reducing and treating pain, it can also reduce stress. Back when I was first diagnosed with fibromyalgia, I explored acupuncture as a natural method to bring my pain levels under control. Not only did I find acupuncture beneficial for reducing my pain, it also helped me to relax and ease a large portion of the tension in my body. Natural Headache Relief Remedy: Biofeedback

Biofeedback allows you to track your body’s activities on a screen. So you are able to learn how your body responds to certain stimuli. Through this, it’s believed that you can be taught how to gain control over things your body normally handles automatically. There is data that supports biofeedback as a credible solution to treating tension headaches. Specifically, when used in conjunction with relaxation, one study shows that tension headaches were reduced by 50%.

What biofeedback does in basically monitor tension in your neck, jaw, and temples. Through biofeedback you can then learn how to relax those areas. If biofeedback isn’t an option for you, simple breathing exercises that relax the body may also offer significant benefit.

Natural Headache Relief Remedy: Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is another natural headache relief alternative. There is some evidence that suggests applying peppermint essential oil to your forehead and temples is as effective as taking two extra strength Tylenol. While research still needs to be done to confirm this with absolute certainty, the cooling effect of applying peppermint oil along your hairline can help to relax the muscles in your face and neck.

Tension Headache Relief Massage Oil Recipe

To make a simple tension headache relief massage oil for your neck, back and shoulders, combine 1/4 cup sweet almond oil with 8 drops of lavender essential oil, 5 drops peppermint essential oil and 2 drops of chamomile essential oil. Combine the ingredients in a glass bottle and shake well prior to each use.

Tension Headache Relief Pillow

To make a tension headache relief pillow, cut two pieces of linen down to 10″ x 4″ pieces. Sew the two pieces together, leaving one end open, to fill with herbs. (Alternately, you can also use Aleene’s OK To Wash-It glue.) Fill your pillow with a mix of 1/2 part flax seeds, 1 part dried peppermint leaf, 1 part dried lavender buds and 1 part dried chamomile flowers. If desired, you can also add six drops each of lavender and peppermint essential oils. Then sew up the end of the pillow. Use the pillow either warm or cold as needed.

Natural Headache Relief Roller Bottle

You can also make a natural headache relief essential oil roller bottle blend. Combine 1 oz. of either magnesium oil or fractionated coconut oil with 10 drops of peppermint essential oil, 5 drops of frankincense essential oil, 10 drops of lavender essential oil and 10 drops of chamomile essential oil. Remove the roller ball and stop from a 1 oz. roller bottle. Add the essential oils to the roller bottle first. Then follow with either magnesium oil or fractionated coconut oil. Place the roller ball and stop back onto the bottle, then shake well to combine. Roll the oil onto your neck, shoulders and back as needed.

Tension Headache Aromatherapy Roller Bottle Blend

You can also apply a targeted essential oil blend to your temples, above your eyebrows and at the base of your neck. To make an aromatherapy roller bottle for your tension headaches, fill an empty 10 mL roller bottle with 10 drops peppermint essential oil, 6 drops lavender essential oil and 5 drops frankincense essential oil. Then fill the remainder of the bottle with fractionated coconut oil or another neutral scented carrier oil. Shake to mix then apply as needed at the onset of symptoms.

Natural Headache Relief Support: B-Complex Vitamins

While B-complex vitamins may not actually ease a tension headache, studies show that taking a vitamin B-complex can help to lower the stress levels that lead to the development of tension headaches.

Detox baths not only help to rid the body of toxins, they can also help to ease tension. A simple way to create a natural detox bath is to add either one cup of baking soda or one cup of Epsom salt to warm, running bath water. You can add any of the essential oils mentioned previously for their aromatherapeutic benefits as desired.

I recommend trying peppermint essential oillavender essential oilfrankincense essential oil, lemongrass essential oil or sandalwood essential oil – or your favorite calming or cooling essential oil blend. Natural Headache Relief Remedy: Hot or Cold Compresses

When I first got my tension headache, it was pretty brutal. By the third day it was unbearable. I was practically in tears and I wasn’t sleeping. Over the counter medication had absolutely no effect on it. So, like you, I googled for natural headache relief remedies for tension headaches. This was one of the first options that popped up for naturally treating tension headaches that didn’t require any special products.

I tried a cold compress on the lower back of my head first. It worked ok at relieving some of the pain. So I tried a warm compress next. Basically I just used a heating pad along the back of my head, neck and back. It really relieved my tension headache enough that I was able to feel like I could function again.

If you don’t have a heating pad, you can heat up a damp towel or cloth in the microwave for the same purpose. Just be sure it’s not too hot. You don’t want to accidentally burn your skin.

Natural Headache Relief Remedy: Moving & Stretching

Those of us who spend long hours working at a desk, or even window shopping for soapmaking supplies online (wink wink,) are especially prone to tension headaches. Even if you aren’t bending and hunching over your keyboard 24/7, your back, shoulders and neck can still develop a lot of tension from sitting in the same position all day.

Regardless of whether or not you have a desk job, you really should be up and exercising whenever possible. When I worked for another company, I used to do push ups in my office to help relieve the tension in my back and shoulders. Not only did it ease the muscle tension, it helped with the fibro as well. I also did a lot of stretching while sitting at my desk. During lunch breaks, I would lap the warehouse where our offices were located. It these things are prohibitive to you, simply moving your head in a circular motion does wonders for relieving the built up stress that leads to tension headaches.

Now that I work at home I try to get up and walk around more often. Some days – well on good days – I turn on my favorite playlist and shake my butt a bit. Kind of that, dance like no one is watching sort of thing. Not only does it lift my mood, but it releases tension as well. Ideally, you should be taking a quick break to stretch every 30 to 60 minutes. Dancing is optional, but highly recommended.

In the same realm of thought, yoga is also a wonderful way to relieve both tension and stress. Not only does it help to loosen your muscles, it also improves respiration, vitality and muscle strength. Simple basic yoga poses such as downward facing dog and the child’s pose are both easy ways to fend off a tension headache.

Natural Headache Relief Support: Put Down That Device!

Looking down at your smartphone for extended periods of time puts a LOT of pressure on your neck. In fact, it’s an extra 20-30 lbs. of pressure! Insane, right? And, I mean, do you really don’t need to spend 40 minutes playing Angry Birds Match just because you won unlimited lives. Likewise you’ll also probably want to hold off on giving yourself that new pedicure. Why not get one done professionally and enjoy some self care instead? That said, take breaks from your smartphone already! There’s an entire world out there just waiting for you to enjoy it!

When Natural Headache Relief Remedies Just Don’t Work

Sometimes natural headache relief remedies just don’t work. I tried a natural remedy because over the counter medication just wasn’t doing anything for my tension headache. While warm heat relieved the pain enough so it was bearable, it wasn’t working as a long term solution.

Having fibromyalgia makes my symptoms a little trickier to treat. (I once felt like I’d pulled a muscle for two weeks just from pulling my shirt off up and over my head!) I’m experiencing an insane amount of stress right now. I’m worried about making it as a self-employed writer. I have a lot of debt. I lost my health insurance. And my ex and I got the ball rolling on the whole divorce thing last week. (Only a few more weeks til it’s done.) And then there’s the chronic pain. So I made a really tough decision for myself. I went back on SSRI’s to treat my anxiety.

If you’ve followed my blog or even my social media channels for a long time, then you probably know that I have worked really hard to make lifestyle and nutrition changes to come off of all the prescription medications used to treat my fibromyalgia. The tramadol and the Lyrica were the first to go – and one of the best decisions of my life.

A while back I started taking an incredibly low dose of Celexa. My anxiety was high and I had a lot of tension. Muscle relaxers didn’t help with the tension and I ended up with TMJ. I’d moved out of my apartment into another town to escape some terrible upstairs neighbors who would scream at one another until three in the morning and abused their dog.

I was commuting a much longer distance back and forth to work (which especially sucks with fibro) and I was starting to have panic attacks while driving. The long stretch of road I had to commute down to get to my day job in Roanoke had multiple accidents a day. They actually put a sign up warning drivers to slow down. Over 400 people a year die on that road.

Once I was taking 20mg of Celexa for about two or three weeks, my jaw tension disappeared completely. I moved back to Roanoke. I impulsively got married. Six months later we split and I’ve been living with my best friend ever since. I started therapy. And then I weaned myself off of the SSRI completely. Since then I’ve been working on discontinuing my use of muscle relaxers entirely. I’ve tried a plethora of herbal supplements including skullcap and passionflower (which helps some) and CBD oil.

The CBD oil was by far the best substitute for the Flexeril’s – a muscle relaxer that helps with both muscle spasms and tension as well as some pain. As it’s not recommended you take flexeril for long periods of time, this was the last prescription medication I was holding onto. However, CBD is not at all an affordable option for me at the daily amount and dosage that I’d need to stop my medication. Which is a shame because it offers so many other health benefits. Plus it’s pretty miraculous at calming anxiety. (Coming from the girl who used to have agoraphobia.)

So, for me to have to admit to myself, that short term I needed to start taking the Celexa again – it was hard. I didn’t want to. At the same time however, I couldn’t function. So, despite my desire to be free of medications once and for all, I still have a little ways to go. I’m okay with that though because I know that one day I will get there.

While modern SSRI’s are not believed to be as effective at treating tension headaches as a tricyclic antidepressant, there is some evidence that, based on the individual’s situation, they can offer some relief. As much of my tension headache was coming from both stress and anxiety – I can be a chronic worrier – in addition to muscle tension, the Celexa has offered significant relief. It’s also within my budget.

A 30-day dose of just 20mg of (generic) citrolopram only costs $17. Whereas the amount and dosage of CBD I needed runs $140 per month at minimum, assuming I have no bad days. This is both frustrating and infuriating at the same time. That there are natural, healthier alternatives to modern pharmaceuticals out there that aren’t within the reach of so many who are in chronic pain. However that is another kettle of fish entirely.

While I am still having rebound headaches – they have not gone away entirely – I am feeling and functioning significantly better than I was before.

If you are experiencing chronic headaches, there could be an underlying medical condition. So please see a doctor if your headaches persist. I know my headaches are tension headaches. I’ve had CAT scans in the past, with and without contrast, when I was on my journey to have the fibro diagnosed. However, it’s always best not to gamble with your health and be proactive where you need to be.

Darn Those Wacky Hormones

When I was a teenager I always assumed that I would grow out of my acne. Sadly, that was not the case. I had terrible acne flare ups throughout my thirties. Some of which were hormonal. (Incidentally, if you are also struggling with perimenopause, I’ve found several natural supplements that work for me. Ashwagandha root, a B-complex with ginseng and evening primrose are great for increasing energy, preventing hot flashes and improving stress response.)

For the most part I’m able to prevent most of my acne with the right skin care products – with one hold out. My chin seems to be completely immune to nearly everything I’ve tried. And with summer here, I feel like I constantly have a volcano erupting somewhere on my face. Especially since I sweat like a teenage boy.

Imaginary creatures.

When I was eight I went on my very first (and only) snipe hunt with my Brownie troop. It was just one part of an adventure filled summer in which I also learned how shoot a bow and arrow. Our group leader had, of course, planned out the snipe hunting trip in advance.

Having grown up with family who went on yearly hunting trips for venison (in addition to the occasional squirrel or rabbit) a snipe hunt seemed like a completely plausible scenario to teach us a new life skill. As our snipe hunt took place prior to the existence of the internet, we had no way of knowing one way or the other what a snipe hunt was other than what we were told. Naturally everyone in my Brownie troop was excited about the idea of catching our very first rabbit-sized snipe.

The day of the snipe hunt we were given a rather vague description of what snipes looked like. One girl was given a large fishing net. Another Brownie was given a bag. The rest of us found sticks that we could use to scare a timid snipe out of the brush. So off we went, huddled in a group half skipping with excitement, down a forest trail with sticks in hand.

Our group leader would occasionally travel ahead only to rush back claiming from time to time that she’d just seen a snipe – what was a wonderful yet entirely imaginary creature. This fueled our excitement and kept us going despite never actually seeing said snipe for ourselves.

I don’t really recall how long we spent hunting this poor (completely fabricated) creature through the woods. However, I do remember the disappointment in learning that we’d been duped.

A tradition that dates as far back as the 1840’s in America, snipe hunting is a practical joke in which an unsuspecting newbie is duped into trying to catch a non-existent animal called a snipe. Many of us who grew up prior to social media (Hello all you lovely baby boomers and Gen-exers!) have at one time been a victim of this prank. So it was no wonder that when my Northern bred boss first moved to Virginia, he thought he was also a victim in a somewhat similar scenario.

Not so imaginary creatures.

Before I dove into self-employment full time I worked for a small family owned business. The owner and his family were originally from New Jersey. As new transplants to Southwestern Virginia, there are quite a few “cultural” differences between the North and South. My boss at the time, Bill, quickly discovered many of these differences through working with clients. However, one instance in particular was somewhat similar to my own snipe hunting excursion many years back. But this time, in reverse.

While out scouting a potential job site, Bill found himself knee high in a field of tall grasses and wildflowers. Bill’s client immediately warned him of the possibility of chiggers in the weeds. Assuming that chiggers were an imaginary creature – something like that long ago snipe we’d both been tricked into hunting – Bill dismissed the warning. He was absolutely convinced that his client, who was born and raised in the South, was pulling his leg. Unfortunately, he was not.

What are chiggers?

Chiggers are quite real. It’s also quite possible that they are spawned from Satan. Not visible to the naked eye, these tiny white mites are parasites in their larval stage and live on or UNDER the skin of warm blooded animals. Commonly found in forests and grasslands, chiggers, or trombiculidae mites as they are referred to by scientists, are a relative of ticks.

In addition to red, pimple like bumps and hives chiggers leave behind, they also cause the most horrendous itching EVER. It is not a pleasant experience. So in fact, in Bill’s case, a Northerner had not been duped by a Southerner. Rather Bill’s client had given him fair warning and Bill paid the price for his disbelief.

Chigger bites are most common in late spring, summer and early fall when the temperatures are between 77°F and 86°F. As the parasitic larvae don’t fly, they tend to stick together in large clumps on low lying grass and leaves. As a person or animal walks by, chiggers then attach themselves to their next warm blooded meal. Chiggers then use their claws to make tiny holes in skin. Then they inject their saliva into the hole they create in order to liquify and feed off of skin cells.

The resulting itching and dermatitis from chiggers lasts for several days. And it’s extreme enough that it can keep you from sleeping. Healing then occurs within one to two weeks.

Prevent bites from parasitic chiggers with this natural home remedy with essential oils. Plus craft your own all natural pine tar soap recipe with neem oil to soothe insect bites, calm itching and promote healing.

How to prevent chiggers.

There has been some success in repelling chiggers using essential oils. Just as citronella repels mosquitoes and lemon eucalyptus essential oil repels deer ticks, studies suggest essential oils can also be used to repel chiggers.

The top essential oils for a chigger repellent spray include citronella, tea tree, geranium and lemongrass essential oils blended in jojoba oil. I recommend using three drops of each of these essentials oils per ounce of jojoba oil if you’d like to craft your own chigger repellent. Simply combine each of these ingredients together combined in a large roller ball bottle. Alternately, you may also want to try to my natural insect repellent body butter recipe which also contains anti-parasitic neem oil.

All natural pine tar soap for chigger “bites.”

Should you one day, like Bill, find yourself knee deep in not so imaginary creatures there is a simple and natural solution. My favorite natural remedy for chiggers is pine tar soap with neem oil.

If you own horses you’re likely already familiar with pine tar. A natural, antiseptic germicidal product for horse hooves, pine tar is an effective treatment for quarter cracks, split hooves, corns and hard frogs. It’s also used on animals to treat scrapes, burns, abrasions, sores, cuts and thrush.

When used in soapmaking, pine tar works to treat a variety of problematic skin conditions. Pine tar soap is shown to be effective at fighting psoriasis, eczema and dandruff as well as skin inflammation. Additionally, all natural pine tar soap can also be used to soothe and treat the symptoms of poison ivy, oak, and sumac. It also relieves the itching caused by bug bites – and chiggers.

As I wanted to formulate an all natural pine tar soap specifically for skin issues that dealt with parasites, I also used neem oil in my recipe. Neem oil, which research shows has natural anti-inflammatory and analgesic (pain killing) properties, has also been used as an anti-parasitic treatment for thousands of years in India. As a natural skin care remedy, it is used topically to reduce the symptoms of common skin conditions such as eczema, ringworm, athlete’s foot, cold sores, psoriasis, warts, scabies, candida, infected burn wounds, slow-healing skin ulcers and even acne.

Combined, pine tar and neem oil create a powerful natural remedy that’s a must for any home apothecary. Not only does my all natural pine tar soap recipe soothe itching and promote healing caused by general skin care concerns, it’s also effective at fighting those not so imaginary creatures that we can’t see, but still exist.

All Natural Pine Tar Soap Recipe

Ingredients:

1.6 oz. sweet almond oil (10%)
.8 oz. castor oil (5%)
4.8 oz. refined coconut oil (30%)
1.6 oz. mango butter (10%)
2.4 oz. 100% neem oil (15%)
3.2 oz. pomace olive oil (20%)
1.6 oz. sal butter (10%)

2.25 oz. lye/sodium hydroxide (6% superfat)
4 fl. oz. distilled (or filtered) water

1.6 oz. (creosote free) pine tar (10%)
.15 oz. lemon eucalyptus (or tea tree) essential oil
.25 oz. peppermint essential oil
.1 oz. lemongrass essential oil

Soap Notes:

The water percentage for my all natural pine tar soap recipe was calculated at 35% of the oil weight for 5.6 oz. I then reduced that amount by the amount of pine tar called for in my all natural pine tar soap recipe. For a harder bar of soap, you can add one Tablespoon of (60% solution) sodium lactate to your lye/water once it has cooled.

Instructions:

My all natural pine tar soap recipe is a cold process soap recipe – meaning it is made from scratch using lye. To duplicate my pine tar soap, you’ll need to follow my basic cold process soapmaking instructions. You should also take proper safety precautions when working with lye. Gloves and eye protection are recommended.

You will start by mixing the lye/water. To do this, measure out the distilled water called for in the recipe into a non-aluminum, heat proof container.

Then, using a digital scale, weigh out the lye. Slowly pour the lye into the water in a well ventilated area. Now stir the lye and water together until the lye dissolves completely.

Once the lye has dissolved, set the lye/water mixture aside to cool.

Next, weigh out the sweet almond, castor, coconut, olive and neem oils. Combine in a non-aluminum pot. Follow with the mango butter, sal butter and pine tar, first weighing out each ingredient, then combining in the pot with the liquid carrier oils.

Heat the soapmaking fats (your carrier oils, butters and pine tar) over low to medium-low heat on the stove until all of the ingredients have completely melted. Then set aside to cool.

While the lye/water and soapmaking oils cool, weigh out the essential oils into a separate glass container.

To avoid having your all natural pine tar soap seize from the additional heat generated during the saponification process from the pine tar, allow both the lye/water and the soapmaking oils to cool to around 80°F.

Once the temperatures of the lye/water and soapmaking oils have come down and are within 10°F of one another, you are ready to make my all natural pine tar soap.

Add the essentials oils to the pot of soapmaking oils. Then mix with a stick blender to combine.

Now pour the lye/water into the soapmaking oils. Mix either on low with a stick blender or by hand (recommended) as the soap will quickly reach trace. (If your soap seizes, don’t worry. Mix it by hand until the soap gels, then mix again and spoon into your mold.)

Once the all natural pine tar soap traces, pour the pine tar soap batter into your mold. (I used this round silicone mold and was able to make six bars.)

Set the soap aside. After 24-48 hours, unmold your all natural pine tar soap. Then allow your soap bars to cure in a cool, dry location for four to six weeks.

About My Natural Antifungal Foot Salve Recipe

There are many common natural antifungal ingredients that you’ve probably already heard of. These ingredients are found in many of the natural home remedies that are used to treat foot related fungal infections. The base for my natural antifungal foot salve recipe contains a blend of just three holistic ingredients. Those ingredients are organic cosmetic beeswax, refined coconut oil and neem oil. Both neem oil and coconut oil have strong, proven antifungal properties. Because this salve contains neem oil, however, the addition of organic essential oils will make your natural antifungal foot salve smell a lot better. Neem oil is a natural carrier oil. It is derived from the pressed fruits and seeds of the neem tree – an evergreen tree that is endemic to India. Due to it’s natural health and skin care benefits, neem oil has a long history of use in both Ayurvedic and Unani medicine.

Both a powerful anti-inflammatory and analgesic, neem oil also possesses antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties. As such, it’s often used topically in natural skin care preparations to fight rheumatism, eczema, ringworm, athlete’s foot, cold sores, psoriasis, warts, chronic syphilitic sores, infected burn wounds, and slow-healing skin ulcers. Additionally, neem oil can also help to control various skin infections including scabies and candida.

Therefore neem oil is a key component of my natural antifungal foot salve recipe. Combined with the natural antimicrobial properties of coconut oil in addition to its antifungal agents, like monocaprin and monolaurin, this foot salve sets you up for optimal foot health.

AntiFungal Essential Oils

There are many natural essential oils with antifungal properties. In addition to both oregano and tea tree essential oils previously mentioned, many other essential oils naturally deter the growth of fungus. These antifungal essential oils include thyme, clove, lavender, geranium, chamomile, cedarwood, cinnamon bark, frankincense, lemongrass, pine, ravensara and rosemary.

Some of these essential oils can irritate skin, such as clove, cinnamon bark, pine, ravensara, cedarwood and thyme. Therefore use these essential oils with caution for topical applications. However many others are safe to use when properly diluted. You can use up twelve drops of essential oil per ounce. This is normally considered a safe amount for skin care applications such as my natural antifungal foot salve recipe. So feel free to craft your own natural antifungal essential oil blends to suit your nose.

(Pregnant women should avoid certain essential oils. Always consult your health care provider before trying any alternative or holistic therapies. It’s also important to note that the recommended usage rate of essential oils for children is much lower than it is for adults.)

Natural Antifungal Foot Salve Recipe

Ingredients:

1 oz. organic cosmetic beeswax
1 oz. refined coconut oil
2 oz. unrefined cold pressed cosmetic neem oil
12 drops wild oregano essential oil
12 drops tea tree essential oil
12 drops lavender essential oil
12 drop peppermint essential oil

Instructions:

Weigh and melt the oils and beeswax.

Weigh out the beeswax, coconut oil and neem oil using a digital scale. Then combine these ingredients for my antifungal foot salve recipe in a double boiler. Heat over low heat until all the ingredients have melted.

Add the essential oils and combine.

Remove the oil and wax mixture from heat. Then add twelve drops of each of the essential oils using a dropper or graduated plastic transfer pipettes. Stir to combine.

Pour your antifungal foot salve into jars.

Pour the anti-fungal foot salve into two 2 oz. glass jars. Once cool and the salve has solidified, screw on the lids.

To use, simply apply this salve to your feet after bathing and cover with socks.

You can also use my antifungal foot salve as a spot acne treatment. It’s especially awesome at pulling out white heads that are still beneath the skin overnight. And, it does it without drying out your skin. So you aren’t left with flaky, red irritated skin that store bought acne medications with benzoyl peroxide tend to give you.

When not in use, keep your anti-fungal foot salve stored in a cool, dry location. Your foot salve should last up to 12 months when properly stored.

No one wants ugly feet. Especially not when summer weather hits. We want our feet to look as awesome as those new sandals we just bought this season. What we DON’T want, however, is a YouTube video of us on a bus peeling skin off our feet. (…and then eating it.)

The horror of that video has since inspired me to experiment with various foot care products. It’s the unforeseen consequences of these products that led to my development of a homemade callus treatment balm.

Women don’t want funky feet. They don’t want you to have them either.

We’ve all heard the negative comments about feet when the weather heats up. Socks and sneakers are replaced with sandals and we tend to see a lot of chunky yellowed calluses, fungus infested toenails and the like. Women especially, I think, enjoy the gossip. Perhaps to feel better about themselves. Or maybe just because they really are completely and totally grossed out.

I remember when I worked on the farmer’s market many years ago. I overheard all kinds of remarks about unfit feet. Typically men were the brunt of these insulting observations. I imagine it’s because men in general don’t care as much about what other people think. If they did they wouldn’t wear socks with sandals, right? (wink. wink.)

I think that we, as women, tend to be more conscious of our own foot health. Many of us were raised to put more into our appearance than men were as children. And for the most part, I don’t see a lot of women wearing sandals if they have funky feet. With the hundreds to thousands of foot care care products marketed to women everyday, the money we’re willing to spend on foot health becomes more evident.

From foot scrubs, sprays, masks and soaks to pumice stones, foot butters and even foot peeling shoes, I’m always discovering new products for foot care. There’s in fact an entire aisle dedicated to just foot care products at my local Ulta.

Foot peeling shoes fall into two categories – effective and completely disgusting.

One of the stranger foot care products I’ve tried are the Tony Moly Foot Peeling Shoes. This liquid foot care product contains lactic acid, salicylic acid and a blend of plant based extracts to remove keratin from your feet. Thickened keratin or calluses, which is medically referred to as hyperkeratosis, peels off of feet when this product is applied within four to six days.

Similar to, but less expensive than, other foot peeling masks on the market, Tony Moly has seen increased popularity with the rise of the Korean skin care and beauty trend.

I first tried Tony Moly’s magic changing foot peeling shoes last year. Freaked out by some of the reviews and photos of excessive peeling, I followed the directions on using this product to a T. I left the foot peeling shoes on for an hour and a half, then washed and dried my feet as indicated.

However, before I reached the four to six day peeling period, I exfoliated my feet daily with the Earth Therapeutics Diamond File to remove excess skin and minimize peeling as much as possible. (You know. Because I had places to go and people to see.)

The product performed okay. There was no vomit inducing horror show on my feet after use, which I was happy about. I simply couldn’t imagine my feet recovering from some of the images I’ve seen from use of this type of product. (Google at your own risk.) I’ve used the foot peeling shoes twice since then.

With the arrival of spring I thought I’d give these foot peeling shoes another try. The weather has gone from spring temperatures straight to middle of August heat a few times already. Wanting to avoid any criticism of my forty plus year old feet – feet do weird things after forty – I placed an order with Ulta and waited for my Tony Moly foot peeling shoes to arrive.

I used my Tony Moly Foot Peeling Shoes within the past week or so. I cut the foot peeling shoes open and stuck one onto each foot. Each shoe was then held closed with the provided stickers. While the shoes did their thing, I did mine. I worked on social media for my blog. I made lunch. I walked around in those shoes – though cautiously on the stairs since I have a habit of falling down them.

Then Jasper, my dachshund, decided he needed to go outside. Jasper is not one who’s often willing to wait for me to primp. He’s basically a spoiled child in dog form. If he doesn’t get his way he will yell (bark) at you until he does. And if you tick him off, well. Let’s just say he will pee in all the wrong places.

There was no way however that I was going to make it out of the house in those foot peeling shoes. Our side door exits onto gravel and grass and dirt. And Jasper is finicky about where he’ll lay his load. So I removed the foot peeling shoes. I wiped my feet off with a tea towel, slid on a pair of flip flops and off we went.

My day resumed as usual after that. Work and dinner. I caught up on the new season of The Handmaid’s Tale on Hulu. I went to bed, got up, showered. That’s about when I realized I’d forgotten to wash off the residue from the foot peeling shoes. Oops.

A few days later the skin peeling commenced. It was the stuff of nightmarish google images – so totally gross. I would walk around the house leaving bits of dead skin everywhere. My roommate started having nightmares about her own feet peeling. So much in fact, she was peeling off dead skin in her dreams only to hit a road block that required scissors. Yes, scissors!

I alternated back and forth being using my diamond file and moisturizing – day in and day out. Until finally – FINALLY! – my feet started to resemble the feet of a normal human again. That’s when I decided to make a homemade callus treatment balm.

About my homemade callus treatment balm.

I formulated my homemade callus treatment balm using natural skin conditioning carrier oils like coconut oil and camelina seed oil. These oils were then combined with turmeric root powder and a blend of organic essential oils proven to minimize inflammation caused by calluses while also encouraging blood flow, fading discoloration and softening the build up of tough skin.

Essential oils such as tea tree oil and oregano essential oil also help to prevent and treat common fungal infections you get on your feet, including athlete’s foot, toenail fungus and fungus caused by candida.

Homemade Callus Treatment Balm Recipe

Ingredients:

1 oz. refined coconut oil
1 oz. safflower oil
1 oz. natural beeswax pastilles
.75 oz. sunflower oil
.25 oz. camelina seed oil
.025 oz. turmeric root powder
12 drops tea tree essential oil
12 drops chamomile essential oil (3% dilution)
12 drops oregano essential oil
12 drops lavender essential oil

Instructions:

Weigh out the ingredients.

Using a digital scale (I use this Baker’s Math Scale for all my bath, body and homemade soap recipes) weigh out the carrier oils, beeswax and turmeric root powder.

Melt the ingredients.

Combine the oils, beeswax and turmeric in a double boiler and gently heat until the beeswax has completely melted. Remove from heat.

Add the essential oils.

Using a graduated transfer pipette or dropper, add the essential oils to the melted homemade callus treatment balm ingredients. Stir to combine.

If desired you can omit the turmeric root powder and use turmeric essential oil in place of the lavender or chamomile essential oil.

Pour into containers.

Now pour your homemade callus treatment balm into clear or amber glass jars. Once cool, screw on the lids for each jar.

Decorate the amber glass jars for your homemade herbal salves and balms with washi tape or stickers for a personal touch when gift giving!

Decorate or label your jars.

I used two 2.3 oz. thick wall glass cosmetic jars for my homemade callus treatment balms, then decorated the outside of the jars with decorative washi tape. Washi tape and stickers are a fun way to give your balms a personalized homemade look for gifting.

Use your homemade callus treatment balm.

To use simply apply your homemade callus treatment balm after bathing or soaking feet, then exfoliating with a pumice smoothing stone or diamond file. (Note that this product may stain light colored clothing.)
