I created this body butter recipe with my grandmother in mind. My grandmother is now in her mid-80’s and her health has gotten worse recently. This of course means a lot of doctor visitors, getting blood drawn or being hooked up to IV’s and some hospital stays. Inevitably this has caused some pretty nasty bruising. In addition to the bruising, aches and pains are also more common. So for this recipe I combined magnesium hydroxide and arnica infused sweet almond oil into a wonderfully soothing and beautifully scented body butter.

Did you know?

It’s common to have low levels of magnesium in your body. Unfortunately magnesium is the fourth most abundant mineral in your body and is necessary for over 300 reactions within your body. So low levels of magnesium can cause some health issues to arise. Fortunately, it’s easier to increase your magnesium levels than you might think. As magnesium has the ability to be absorbed through skin, a topical body butter is the perfect way to increase your magnesium intake.

So why is magnesium so important?

Magnesium is important for many reasons. It helps to increase rigidity and flexibility in your bones – which is especially important as you age – regulate and normalize blood pressure, increase bioavailability of calcium, prevent congestive heart failure, promote restful sleep, ease muscle cramps and spasms, decrease insulin resistance, end cluster and migraine headaches, enhance circulation, aid in weight loss and so many other common health ailments. More importantly it also helps to ease fibromyalgia and chronic pain. Which is something I can fully attest to. (Discover more benefits of magnesium here.)

With these things in mind and the more frequent medical care my grandmother needs, I thought that magnesium and arnica would make an incredibly suited body butter for my grandmother.

In addition, I also included neem oil in my homemade magnesium and arnica body butter recipe. Neem oil has analgesic properties and is also a strong anti-viral. I had used neem oil previously in a lavender body butter I’d made for my grandmother a few Christmases back for her shingles flare up. She indicated that the body butter I made her had helped her immensely, therefore I really wanted to include neem oil in this recipe as well. (And yes, neem oil smells pretty rank. But I pinky swear that the lavender and blood orange essential oils I use in my recipe to scent the body butter completely mask the smell. Plus they smell AMAZING together!)

Arnica is traditionally used as an external herbal medicine for bruises. It is approved by the German Commission E for topical use when applied for inflammation, bruises and joint pain.

In anticipation of creating my homemade magnesium and arnica body butter recipe I infused arnica flowers in sweet almond oil for just over two months using the solar infusion method. (Herbs, oil and a sunny window.) If you don’t want to wait on a solar herbal oil infusion, you can speed up the process using heat. One way to do this is to make your herbal oil infusion using the crock pot oil infusion method.

To do this simply fill a mason jar with dried arnica flowers and cover with sweet almond oil. Next, place the mason jar in the crock pot half filled with water so that the jar is 3/4th of the way covered. (You can place a tea towel on the bottom of the crockpot with the mason jar on top if needed to keep the jar from moving around.) Turn the crock pot onto low heat and allow the arnica and oil filled mason jar to infuse for 10-12 hours. Remove the mason jar from the crockpot and strain the oil from the arnica flowers. Then transfer the oil into a glass amber bottle for storage.

Alternately, if you are pressed for time, you can also purchase solar infused arnica herbal oil from Mountain Rose Herbs here. While the arnica in this product is infused in olive oil, it is still a suitable substitution for sweet almond oil.

Magnesium and Arnica Body Butter Recipe

Ingredients:

3 oz. refined shea butter
.25 oz. natural cocoa butter
.5 oz. arnica infused sweet almond oil
.2 oz. magnesium hydroxide powder
.1 oz. 100% natural neem oil
.1 oz. emulsifying wax
.1 oz. arrowroot powder
2 mL lavender essential oil
1.5 mL blood orange essential oil

Instructions:

My homemade magnesium and arnica body butter recipe yields one 4 oz. jar of product.

Using a digital scale, weigh out the shea butter, cocoa butter and emulsifying wax into a medium sized Pyrex glass measuring cup. Heat at 40% power in the microwave until melted. (Alternately, you can use a double boiler.)

Now weigh out the neem oil and arnica infused sweet almond oil and stir into the melted butters and wax.

Next, using a graduated transfer pipette, measure out the lavender essential oil and stir into your body butter ingredients. Do the same with the blood orange essential oil, using a fresh pipette to avoid cross contamination.

Now weigh out the arrowroot powder and magnesium hydroxide powder and whisk into the body butter until it is thoroughly combined.

Pour your magnesium and arnica body butter into a clean, sterilized 4 oz. glass salve jar. Allow to cool completely.

Once your body butter has cooled and completely solidified, screw on the cap and label as desired.

Natural Lavender Cream Deodorant Recipe

Ingredients:

1 oz. fractionated coconut oil
.5 oz. refined shea butter
.3 oz. neem oil
.05 oz. emulsifying wax
1.75 oz. arrowroot powder
.5 oz. bentonite clay
.5 oz. magnesium hydroxide
3 mL lavender essential oil
1 mL tea tree essential oil

Instructions:

You’ll want to note beforehand that this product, like many all natural products, is very temperature sensitive. It is the consistency of a cream that feels kind of like Play-doh and takes a minimum of 2-3 days to fully set up. It’s best kept in a temperature controlled setting. If you live in a cooler area you may find that my cream deodorant is a little thicker, especially in the winter.  If you live in a warmer area, it may be thinner. In this case, I’d advise adding a small amount more of emulsifying wax or arrowroot powder. If it’s too thick, add a small amount more of fractionated coconut oil.

You’ll need a digital scale to weigh all of the ingredients, except for the essential oils which are measured out using graduated transfer pipettes.

To make my lavender cream deodorant recipe, you’ll begin by weighing out the shea butter and emulsifying wax into a glass Pyrex measuring cup. Melt either in the microwave at 50% power – higher temps can cause your shea butter to become grainy – or in a double boiler.

Now weigh out the neem oil – you’ll need to use 100% neem oil for this recipe, not one that’s been diluted so it stays in a liquid state at lower temperatures – and the fractionated coconut oil. Stir into the melted shea butter and emulsifying wax. If needed, gently heat again then mix well to combine.

Using graduated transfer pipettes, measure out the lavender and tea tree essential oils and stir into the melted ingredients. You’ll want to use a new pipette for each essential oil in order to avoid cross contamination.

Now weigh out the arrowroot powder, bentonite clay, and magnesium hydroxide into a glass container. Mix well with a non-metal utensil until the powders are thoroughly combined.

Slowly pour the powder mixture into the melted wet ingredients mixing as you go until both wet and dry ingredients are mixed completely into one another.

Pour your cream deodorant into a 4 oz. glass salve jar or similar – I used the glass jars from Container and Packaging for this project – and screw on the lid.

Allow your cream deodorant to thicken and set up fully. In most cases this will take about two days. However, in warmer climates it can take three. Mix once or twice a day until it fully sets up. The final deodorant will feel pillowy when you touch it and if you were to scoop all of it out of the jar, it would feel a lot like Play-doh, except it starts to thin out to a lotion like consistency when handled due to your body temperature.

I have not found that the refrigerator speeds up the process as the deodorant will go back to it’s previous state once it goes back to room temperature. You’ll want to keep the extra heat from where you melted the shea butter and emulsifying wax to help the arrowroot powder work as a thickener.

Alternately, you can also try heating the ingredients continuously in a double boiler until all the ingredients have been combined prior to pouring into your jar to shave some time off the process. However, I’ve not tested making my deodorant cream recipe this way, therefore I don’t know if it affects the final consistency of the product or not.

Once your lavender cream deodorant is ready, simply scoop out a small amount and rub onto your armpits. It should melt nicely into your skin and won’t leave your skin feeling sticky or greasy. Yay!

To use on your feet, simply massage a small amount onto the bottoms your feet – and your toenails if they’re prone to fungus – prior to applying socks and/or shoes.

To mattify your face, keep your complexion shine free and to help prevent acne breakouts, massage a tiny pea sized amount of deodorant onto your face after your moisturizer and under makeup. Concentrate the deodorant cream in areas that are most prone to oil. For me, that’s my T-zone.

Or, to use as a face mask, scoop out a generous amount of deodorant and apply to clean skin in the same way you would a regular clay mask. Once dry, gently rinse off then follow with your favorite toner and moisturizer.

My natural lavender deodorant cream recipe makes enough deodorant to fill one 4 oz. jar. For best results, use within six months. If you are shipping your product and it melts, simply stir then pop it in the refrigerator until it thickens back up. Stir again and use as normal.

This cayenne pain relief salve recipe is wonderful for treating pain caused by arthritis, sore muscles, stiffness and swelling. You can make it using either chili seed essential oil – a hotly pungent variety of Capsicum – or a cayenne extract – depending on what is most accessible to you. Both of these natural ingredients warm skin to help to relax tight or sore muscles.

I’ve also included neem oil as one of the ingredients for it’s healing and analgesic properties. For even more pain fighting power, you can opt to use arnica infused grapeseed oil over regular grapeseed oil in this recipe. Or even sub out the grape seed oil with your own favorite carrier oil of choice. (You can check out my chamomile balm recipe for instructions on how to make an herbal infusion.)

Finally, I scented this cayenne pain relief salve with a delicious fragrance blend of lavender and chocolate. The fragrance is optional, but it really smells amazing. I also created free printable labels for your cayenne pain relief salve to make it suitable for gifting.

Chocolate & Lavender Cayenne Pain Relief Salve Recipe

Ingredients:

.75 oz. beeswax
.25 oz. traditional emulsifying wax
1 oz. cocoa butter (or mango butter)
1 oz. shea butter
.75 oz. grapeseed oil (optional to infuse with arnica flowers)
.25 oz. neem oil
.05 oz. vitamin E oil
1.5 mL chili seed essential oil (or cayenne extract)
1 mL lavender essential oil
1.5 mL chocolate fragrance oil of choice, optional

Instructions:

Using a digital scale, begin by weighing out the waxes and butters into a small glass Pyrex measuring cup. Heat in the microwave at 50% power until the wax has melted completely, approximately 3 to 4 minutes. (Alternately you can use a double boiler.)

Now weigh out the grape seed oil and neem oil and stir into the melted wax and butters. Follow with the vitamin E oil.

Using a different graduated plastic transfer pipette for each ingredient, measure out and add the essential oils and fragrance. Stir well.

Now pour your cayenne pain relief salve evenly into your containers. I used two 2.65 oz. white dial up empty deodorant containers. However the 2.5 oz. size will also work. Allow the product to cool and solidify completely before placing the caps onto your containers.

Finally, print out the labels (found here) onto your choice of full size clear inkjet (or laser) labels. (I used labels from WorldLabel.) Plain white sticker labels will also work. Cut out the individual labels using scissors, remove the backing and adhere the labels to the front of your containers. And you’re done!

To use, dial the product up the same as you would deodorant and apply to affected areas of skin as needed. Massage in. Avoid using on broken skin and be sure to wash your hands well after use. Due to the chili seed essential oil this product will irritate mucous membranes, eyes and other sensitive areas.

Homemade Rose & Lavender Body Wash Recipe

Ingredients:

3 oz. organic liquid Castille soap
2 oz. aloe vera gel
1 oz. rose hydrosol
.25 oz. evening primrose oil
30 drops (or 1.5 ml) lavender essential oil

Instructions:

Using a digital scale, weigh out the Castille soap, aloe vera gel, rose hydrosol and evening primrose oil into a medium to large glass Pyrex measuring cup.

Use a dropper or graduated transfer pipette to add the lavender essential oil.

Mix the ingredients for this rose and lavender body wash recipe until they are fully incorporated then use a funnel to pour the body wash into a 6-8 oz. container of your choice.

Shake before use and enjoy as you would any other body wash!

Use it as moisturizing hand soap!

Alternately, this homemade rose and lavender body wash recipe also makes a wonderful, moisturizing hand soap by the sink! Simply refill your existing hand soap container with this body wash. To refill a foaming hand soap container, fill the container 1/3 of the way full with your body wash then fill the remainder of the container with distilled water.

Why evening primrose oil?

Evening Primrose Oil contains a high concentration of the fatty acid, gamma-linolenic acid, also called GLA. This fatty acid gives this plant its remarkable healing properties. Studies have shown that evening primrose oil helps to moisturize, rejuvenate and repair skin cells as well as provide relief from skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis and rosacea. Don’t want to use evening primrose oil? You can substitute any carrier oil in it’s place.

What about other substitutions?

In addition, you can easily change the fragrance of this body wash recipe by substituting the rose hydrosol with any other flower hydrosol of your choice. Prefer simply a rose scented body wash? Omit the lavender essential oil. Or use your favorite essential oil in its place! Mix and match your favorite flower hydrosol and essential oil(s) for a fun custom scent.

I made this lavender body butter recipe specifically for my grandmother as a homemade Christmas gift. Her favorite scent is lavender lavender lavender. And I chose to add the neem oil to the recipe as she suffers from reoccurring shingles and neem oil has very strong anti-viral properties. In addition neem oil has also been shown to offer relief from common skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis.

Non-greasy Lavender Body Butter Recipe

Ingredients:

3 oz. refined shea butter
.25 oz. refined/deodorized cocoa butter
.2 oz. hemp seed oil
.1 oz. lanolin
.1 oz. Cyclomethicone
.05 oz. arrowroot powder
.07 oz. lavender essential oil
1 ml pure 100% neem oil
1ml vitamin E oil

Instructions:

If you prefer an all natural lavender body butter then you can omit the Cyclomethicone. However, this ingredient gives the resulting body butter a smooth, silky feel and also helps the end product not feel greasy once it absorbs into skin. Color is also optional. If you’d like a lavender tinted product you can use micas or oxide and ultramarine pigment powders. In addition you can use unrefined shea butter and cocoa butter but it may impact the fragrance of the final product depending on where you source your ingredients.

This lavender body butter recipe yields one 4 oz. container and will weigh around 3.8 oz. You can easily double or triple this recipe to make more than one lavender body butter at a time.

Begin by using a digital kitchen scale to weigh out the shea and cocoa butters. Combine in a large glass Pyrex measuring cup and heat at reduced power until fully melted.

Weigh out the arrowroot powder and stir into the butters until it has dissolved.

Now weigh out the lanolin and stir into the melted butters until it has liquified.

Next weigh out and stir in the hemp seed oil, lavender essential oil and Cyclomethicone. Follow with the vitamin E and neem oils, using graduated plastic pipette to measure out and add these ingredients. Mix well.

This homemade non-greasy lavender body butter recipe makes a lovely homemade Christmas gift idea and contains natural lavender essential oil and neem oil.

Pour the body butter into a 4 oz. container of your choice. I used a small 4 oz. quilted Ball canning/jelly jar. (My 12 pack of jars came with a set of blank labels you see on the front of my lavender body butter.) You can easily find these at local grocery stores as well as big box stores. Keep in mind that this lavender body butter recipe will take a while to harden up. You can speed this up by placing it in the fridge.

To use simply scoop out a small amount and rub onto skin as desired. Keep in mind that less is more. A little goes a long way and using too much will take the product longer to absorb.
