There’s a universal truth about soapmaking. And it’s not really one we’re aware of until we actually devote ourselves to becoming soapmakers head on. It’s not a cheap hobby. In fact, getting started can require a pretty hefty investment. Throw in beauty and skin care recipes and you accidentally blew your entire grocery budget for the month. Even those DIY kits from soapmaking suppliers can run on the high side. I’ve seen a few that were over $100. And they only make a single recipe. Add essential oils to the mix and it can get expensive AF pretty quickly.

So why can’t there be an affordable way to explore multiple arenas of making simple essential oil recipes for home, health and beauty?

There is. It’s called Simply Earth.

What makes Simply Earth so amazing?

I received the January box from Simply Earth and can’t say enough great things about it. What makes it so amazing? Well, I’ll tell you.

1. It saves space.

If you’ve ever purchased materials in bulk for a project you know how much space they can take up. Living in a tiny *almost* studio sized apartment, I understand how important it is to save on space. So if you end up with a massive amount of containers and ingredients for a project you only plan to make once, it’s a challenge to find room for the leftover supplies. With Simply Earth you get all the materials you need in a SINGLE box for multiple recipes. There are still ingredients like essential oils, carrier oils and even beeswax leftover to use in future essential oil recipes. However, they aren’t going to take up three shelves in your cabinet.

Everything you need to get started with no special equipment to buy. Plus there are six, brand new simple essential oil recipes to make each month.

One of my favorite beauty secrets, in addition to using a plumping hyaluronic serum, is a simple oil-based anti aging serum. There are a number of skin care benefits to using an oil based, homemade anti aging serum recipe. Not only does this natural anti aging serum keep my skin moisturized, it’s also helped diminish scarring from a dog bite last year. In addition, it also effortlessly removes waterproof makeup. Plus it’s incredibly easy to make. Simply weigh out the ingredients and mix to combine. In five minutes or less, you’ll be on your way to more youthful looking skin that not only looks healthy, but feels healthy as well!

I’d had this homemade anti aging serum recipe – like most things – on my to do list for quite some time. (Which is why tackling my to list is NOT one of my goals for the New Year. I mean, life happens. Right?) I’d purchased the ingredients for this natural beauty recipe many months ago. However, it wasn’t until my friend’s eczema got really bad that I finally committed myself to this project.

You see, one of the ingredients I used for my anti aging serum recipe has some pretty stellar skin care benefits. Not just for maturing skin, but for treating eczema as well. So I made my anti aging serum recipe first. Then I worked with the same ingredients to formulate a natural beauty balm to soothe my friend’s eczema. (Subscribe to my newsletter so you don’t miss my upcoming eczema relief salve recipe! Or shop for natural remedies.)

Anti Aging Serum Recipe: Ingredients & Benefits

So, just what ARE the ingredients I chose for my anti aging serum recipe? And what are their natural skin care benefits? The main components of my anti aging serum are rosehip seed oil, borage oil, raspberry seed oil and moringa seed oil.

Skin Care Benefits of Borage Oil

You may be most familiar with borage oil from its use in hair care products to promote scalp health. However, borage oil is also an exceptional carrier oil for other natural beauty and skin care recipes as well. Because borage oil is rich in both GLA and Omega 6 Fatty Acids, it’s especially useful at fighting skin inflammation. So conditions such as acne, skin reddening and rosacea are naturally calmed when borage oil is applied due to its natural anti-inflammatory properties.

Additionally, borage oil, which comes from a flower known as the starflower, has shown benefits for those who suffer from topical skin problems such as eczema, atopic dermatitis and psoriasis. This is because borage oil contains high amounts of Gamma Linolenic Acid (or GLA.) Borage oil is also a superior moisturizer for dry skin. And, it’s also suitable for sensitive skin. On babies, borage oil is a common treatment for skin conditions such as cradle cap.

Research has shown that the high amount of GLA in borage oil makes it an effective topical treatment for promoting skin health when used as a treatment for dry skin, inflammation, wounds, dermatitis and eczema. What makes borage oil unique is that it is comprised of 20%-24% GLA. Where, in comparison, other carrier oils used in anti aging formulations contain less. Evening primrose oil, for example, contains only 8%-10% GLA.

So whether you suffer from eczema or acne, or simply moisture loss in skin due to aging, borage oil is a must for any anti aging serum recipe. (It’s also why I used it as a key ingredient in my eczema relief salve.) You’ll love its ability to calm irritated skin, combat acne and lock in moisture to hydrate maturing skin. (Shop for natural anti-aging facial care products with borage oil here.)

Skin Care Benefits of Moringa Seed Oil

Like borage oil, moringa seed oil is another nutrient dense carrier oil with anti aging skin care benefits. It’s rich in antioxidants, like vitamin E, as well as vitamins A and C. So it helps fight the free radicals that lead to the visible signs of aging. In addition, it also has a high oleic acid content of more than 72%.

Not only does moringa seed oil help fight the visible signs of aging such as fine lines and wrinkles, it also has both antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties that can help prevent and treat acne. Commonly used in anti-aging skin care formulations, moringa seed oil also promotes glowing skin and reduced pore size. Likewise it aids in collagen production to improve skin elasticity and firmness as well.

Additionally, you’ll also find that moringa seed oil promotes healing of minor wounds. Plus it’s incredible moisturizing properties help to hydrate maturing skin as well as help with eczema, dermatitis and psoriasis. This makes this carrier oil a great choice not just for my anti aging serum recipe, but also for moisturizing body butters, herbal salves, eczema remedies and beauty & lip balms. (Shop for natural moisturizers and facial care products containing moringa seed oil here.)

Skin Care Benefits for Raspberry Seed Oil

Much like moringa seed oil, raspberry seed oil also boosts collagen for firmer skin. And it contains antioxidants that fight free radicals. This natural carrier oil also targets acne, age spots and premature aging in addition to combating sun damage. You’ll love that this oil is also suited for eczema prone skin – much like the other oils used in my anti aging serum recipe. Similarly it also has anti-aging, anti-inflammatory and hydrating properties when used in skin care applications.

Similar to composition to pomegranate seed oil, raspberry seed oil is commonly found in homemade creams and makes a nice addition to sunscreens for its ability to absorb UV light. It’s natural scent is earthy, fresh and light – almost like cucumber – and therefore adds a pleasant, natural fragrance to products. However, as raspberry seed oil has a slower absorption rate than both borage and moringa seed oil, it’s recommended this oil not be used as a base oil for your formulations. Therefore, you’ll find that I use less of this oil in my anti aging serum recipe.

Skin Care Benefits for Rosehip Seed Oil

You may recall the natural anti-aging and beauty benefits of rosehip seed oil from my simple plantain salve recipe. This gentle, hydrating carrier oil absorbs quickly making it wonderful base oil for my anti aging serum recipe. Rich in essential fatty acids, rosehip seed oil offers many of the same natural skin care benefits as the other other oils used in my anti aging serum.

In addition to hydrating dry or maturing skin, rosehip seed oil also helps boost collagen production, reduce inflammation, reduce hyperpigmentation, protect against sun damage and brighten skin. It has also been shown to reduce fine lines and scars. So whatever your skin type – dry, maturing, acne or even eczema prone – you’ll have healthy looking, glowing skin. Anti Aging Serum Recipe with Borage Oil

© Rebecca D. Dillon

Ingredients:

2 oz. rosehip seed oil
.25 oz. borage oil
.2 oz. moringa seed oil
.1 oz. raspberry seed oil
4-5 drops vitamin E
12 drops frankincense or carrot seed essential oil, optional

Recipe Notes:

My anti aging serum recipe yields approximately six 1/2 oz. glass vials. (I bottled my anti aging serum in these 1/2 oz. clear glass Boston round bottles with child resistant glass droppers from SKS Bottle & Packaging.) While you can reduce this anti aging serum recipe as needed, I gave the extra vials of my anti aging serum as gifts.

Additionally, as is your preference, you can substitute the essential oil in the recipe with one of your choice. Or, if price isn’t an issue, my homemade anti aging serum recipe is lovely with a few drops of rose damask absolute.

Instructions:

I did use a digital scale to weigh out the ingredients for my anti aging serum recipe. As the oils used are different weights, be advised that if you use liquid measurements, the final product will vary slightly.

To make this serum, simply weigh out the carrier oils into a glass container. Then use a plastic transfer pipette or glass dropper to add the vitamin E and essential oil. Mix to combine, then use a fresh plastic transfer pipette to fill the container(s) of your choice.

Usage:

To use your natural anti aging serum recipe, simply apply a few drops to clean, dry skin after applying your toner. Then massage into skin. Follow with your favorite moisturizer.

To use as a makeup remover, massage a dropper full of this anti aging serum onto skin and eye makeup (with your eyes closed.) Then wipe clean with a damp washcloth. Follow with your regular facial cleanser, toner and facial serum. (Or try this 2-ingredient anti-aging argan cleansing facial oil recipe.

What Order You Should Apply Skin Care Products In?

Not sure what order to apply your skin care products? It’s easy. Simply apply products in the following order:

  1. Makeup Remover
  2. Cleanser
  3. Exfoliator or Toner
  4. Treatments (Acne spot medication, antioxidant serums, leave-on hydroxy acids or retinols.)
  5. Hydrating Mist
  6. Cream Moisturizers & Eye Cream
  7.  Mineral Sunscreen
  8. Foundation

How to Make A Simple (Affordable!) Hyaluronic Acid Serum

Making a skin plumping, moisturizing hyaluronic serum recipe is super easy and affordable. With as few as two ingredients, you can create your own hyaluronic serum for your natural skin care routine.

I previously shared a recipe that makes a large container of hyaluronic serum so you can use it EVERYWHERE. However, you can make a smaller amount as well. Simply combine one teaspoon of Bos Essentials Hyaluronic Acid Powder with 3.5 ounces of water in an airtight glass container. Shake vigorously to mix. Then refrigerate for several hours until the mixture gels.

If desired, you can also add 1/2 teaspoon of glycerin for extra hydration. Or even add a drop or two of rose damask absolute.

My DIY anti-aging under eye cream with hyaluronic acid will leave your skin feeling soft and nourished while reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Natural Skincare for Women Over 40

Love the skin you’re in! At least that is the goal most women have as age creeps up. It is no secret that skin changes as we age and some women face dramatic changes, whether it be with a sudden surge of acne, dryness, skin elasticity, and so on. Yes, even after 40, acne can suddenly become an issue! Who wants to deal with that?! It is important to create an age-friendly skincare routine.

Luckily, the skincare industry has made a point to provide thousands of options to tackle any number of these woes. Take a trip down your local drugstore aisle and you can see the proof. So much proof, it can be overwhelming to decide what to choose. You may pick up containers of face washes and creams and not even recognize the long list of ingredients that promise to brighten your complexion and erase the signs of aging. Are these chemicals actually helping?

You have a right to be concerned about what goes into your products and eventually ends up on your skin. In fact, skin absorbs these ingredients incredibly fast – in under 30 seconds – so it is important to weed out the harmful toxins. This is why a handful of brands have come out with all natural skincare that you can trust. There are even natural skincare products you can integrate into your skincare routine that are not found in your typical drugstore. In fact, you will probably be more successful at the supermarket!

Honey

That’s right! Honey not only tastes delicious, but it can be beneficial to your skin as well. A natural antibacterial, honey is great for battling unwanted blemishes with just a few dabs. It is also loaded with those helpful antioxidants that help to soothe and moisturize skin. It becomes a great anti-aging tool, as it can be worn on its own as a mask or mixed with other skin-loving ingredients. Either way, you’ll want to eat it right up!

Green Tea

While drinking a cup of green tea is a nice way to start the day, it is also a great addition to your skincare routine, transforming the surface from the inside out. This tea packs a punch with a high concentration of powerful antioxidants that protect your skin cells from damage. Combined with the caffeine stimulation of green tea, these antioxidants provide some amazing anti-aging effects. Green tea can be found as an ingredient in masks and moisturizers as well, so it is worth putting on your list the next time you hit the store.

Avocado

They may be all the rage on your morning toast, but did you know that avocado is actually an incredible moisturizer? Fact. We eat avocado because they are full of “good fats” for our diet, but those fatty acids are also perfect for keeping your skin supple and nourished. The oils in avocados contain both vitamin E and potassium, making them a perfect addition to your routine. Want a perfectly hydrating mask for your entire body? Mash up an avocado and mix it with honey for an all-over treat!

Sea Salt

As skin ages, it slowly starts to shed dead cells and can show signs of dryness, causing those unwanted wrinkles to be a little more exaggerated than you may like. Therefore, it is important to add exfoliation into your skincare routine. Enter the perfect exfoliator – sea salt. Adding this simple ingredient to your cleansing regimen will help remove dead skin cells as well as keep your skin’s oil production balanced, preventing extra dryness and breakouts.

Essential Oils

Essential oils have been around for a long time, but over the past five years or so the industry has taken some heavy strides, and with good reason. There is an essential oil for almost everything, including skin. If you have sensitive skin, try a chamomile oil for its soothing properties. If you find that your skin suffers from inflammation, causing discoloration, give lavender or tea tree oil a try. Dull skin? Carrot seed oil is for you! There are hundreds of options and dozens of brands. A few drops go a long way and can be mixed with cleansers, toners, and moisturizers to create the perfect mixture for your unique skincare needs.

Vitamin E

You may love the sun, but it is not uncommon to see aging skin associated with sun damaged skin. Prolonged sun exposure, as we know, can lead to skin melanomas and other unwanted medical issues, so it is so important to protect the skin from harmful UV rays. Vitamin E can really make a difference here and can be found in oil form as well as within some of your favorite foods like broccoli, salmon, and sunflower seeds, and has been shown to significantly reduce UV damage.

Spearmint

Wrinkles be gone! Spearmint is here to save the day! The subtler of the mints, spearmint holds a skin-loving secret. Another amazing antioxidant to add to the list, spearmint increases skin elasticity. When skin loses its elasticity, or tightness, wrinkles form, immediately giving way to one of the most common signs of aging. As an added bonus, this magic mint can aid with acne struggles and discoloration from breakouts. Spearmint, like many other natural ingredients can be found in a concentrated oil format, but is also commonly found in teas.

Hyaluronic Acid

One of the major aspects of keeping skin looking young is to moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. You may have seen hyaluronic acid in the list of ingredients in your natural skincare moisturizer or lip balm, and you should be thrilled it was included. Hyaluronic acid is actually made naturally by your body and is responsible for helping your skin retain moisture. When skin is moisturized, it creates that plumping effect, filling in the fine lines caused by aging, making them less and less noticeable. By adding hyaluronic acid to your products, your skin is sure to remain firm and bright for years to come.

Collagen

You may have heard about collagen over the years, but did you know that it is one of the most abundant proteins found in your body? Found in everything from skin and muscles to bones and ligaments to your blood, collagen may just be one of the most important natural skincare ingredients for skin health. Similar to hyaluronic acid, collagen aids with the elasticity of skin. Unfortunately, as you age, the body does not produce as much collagen as it did when you were in your twenties. Collagen can be taken as a supplement, but is also found in many natural skincare products on the market today.

Shea Butter

A product that has been around for seemingly forever, shea butter is a wonderful addition to consider when it comes to a natural body moisturizer. While it is not recommended for the face, shea is perfect for any skin type because it is gentle, as not to irritate those who have sensitivities, such as eczema or body acne. It absorbs quickly and can provide a thin UV barrier, making it perfect for those who just want to grab something light and get out the door. Luckily, the news of shea butter’s benefits spread like wildfire and the product can be found virtually anywhere.

Aloe Vera

Your first thought of aloe may lead you to the green gel in the sun-care aisle of the drugstore, as this is probably the most commonly sold variety. However, pure aloe vera gel can be taken right off the leaf of the plant and used to fight the signs of aging. The reason aloe vera is so often used as a treatment for sunburn is the same reason it is great for skin in general. Aloe is able to keep your skin hydrated while also stimulating new cell growth. Not only that, but it also contains both vitamins E and C, making it a triple threat of skincare items. An aloe plant is fairly simple to tend to, so it is definitely worth keeping around the house. From plant to skin – how much more natural can it get?

Rosehip Oil

Still a part of the family of magical oils to help the skin, rosehip seed oil holds a special place in the mix. This oil, while sounding dainty and light, works deep within the skin to urge cells to produce more collagen. Remember, more collagen equals tighter skin. When skin elasticity is improved, wrinkles are reduced and other bodily signs of aging such as stretch marks, dark spots, and scars begin to fade away. Don’t let the title fool you. A little rose can make a big difference.

Women over 40 rejoice! There is hope for your skin and it is all natural – and may be just a supermarket aisle away. You no longer need to worry about the insanely long list of chemically-derived ingredients in your skincare. Your natural skincare regimen does not need to be complicated or incredibly expensive. There are so many simple options you can mix and match on your own, as well as some fabulous makers who have already done the work for you.

Natural skincare is worth the time and effort finding the right combination for your skin. It is safe and effective and you are in complete control over what you do and do not use. Treat your most troubling signs of aging with ingredients you can trust and go back to again and again. It will be one less stress and a lot less wrinkles! The natural route allows you to age gracefully so you can spend the next 40 plus years fielding compliments like, “Your skin looks incredible!” Now that’s what every woman wants. It is time to love that skin you’re in.

When it comes to makeup removing products, there is a truly overwhelming number of options. Between the vast selection of cleansing oils, cleansing creams, makeup wipes and micellar waters, it can be difficult to choose the right product for your skin.

We believe it’s ideal to switch your skin care products with the seasons, and that also includes your choice of makeup remover. For instance, we prefer using our DIY micellar water during the summer, as it has a light and cooling skin feel that’s perfect for offsetting the heat.

However, when the temperatures fall, we gravitate towards textures that feel a little more nourishing. This makes fall or winter the perfect time to switch to a cleansing balm — or better yet, a chocolate cleansing balm.

This DIY chocolate cleansing balm has a luxurious, velvety feel that’s reminiscent of warm chocolate fudge. And thanks to the addition of cocoa butter and cocoa absolute, it smells just like dark chocolate, too.

Our DIY vanilla cleansing balm is our go-to cleansing balm, but this chocolate cleansing balm has quickly become our new favorite!

Before we get into the recipe, let’s take a look at why cleansing balms are so good for your skin.

Why use a cleansing balm?

Between the many options for makeup removal, a cleansing balm is the most nourishing of them all. Not only is the rich, creamy texture of a balm perfect for emulsifying even the most stubborn waterproof makeup, but it also helps mitigate the inevitable skin dryness that comes with fall and winter weather.

Not only that, but cleansing balms are gentle. Since like dissolves like, cleansing balms are able to melt away oil and makeup effortlessly without disturbing the skin’s delicate balance. Many people are simply too rough with their skin, using abrasive scrubs and astringents that can do more harm than good.

A feeling of tightness or dryness after cleansing shouldn’t be confused with cleanliness. If your face feels tight after washing, it’s likely that your skin’s acid mantle has been disrupted. Disturbing this protective barrier raises the pH of your skin, making it too alkaline.

Our skin prefers to be slightly acidic, so a pH that is too alkaline not only leaves your complexion vulnerable to dryness, but it also makes issues such as acne and dermatitis more likely.

By creating a buffer between your skin and your cleanser, cleansing balms help protect your acid mantle and prevent your skin from being over-cleansed. Instead of feeling dry and stripped after washing, your skin will be left feeling soft and hydrated.

Benefits of bacuri butter for skin.

We created this DIY cleansing balm recipe after reading Rebecca’s post on bacuri butter body balm. We knew we had to get our hands on some bacuri butter after she called it the most magical of all beauty butters!

Exotic bacuri butter hails from the Brazilian Amazon rainforest and is a highly versatile butter. It has a wonderful skin feel that is intensely smooth and emollient, making it a perfect ingredient for a DIY cleansing balm.

Rather than sitting on the surface of the skin, bacuri butter sinks in readily, leaving the skin feeling like silk. Its texture is so luxurious that we might even prefer it to shea butter.

Bacuri butter’s stellar nutritional profile is another aspect of what sets it apart. It’s incredibly rich in vitamins, antioxidants, and minerals that promote skin health. As well, it contains the important sulphur-containing amino acid methionine. Sulphur is one of the main building blocks of healthy skin, which means bacuri butter is particularly beautifying.

Bacuri butter smells very earthy in its raw form, and its deep color and rich texture immediately reminded us of chocolate fudge. For all these reasons, using bacuri butter as the base of a chocolate cleansing balm was an obvious choice.

DIY chocolate cleansing balm ingredients.

In addition to bacuri butter, cocoa butter and cocoa absolute, this DIY cleansing balm recipe also contains:

Macadamia oil

Macadamia oil has a an impressive fatty acid profile. It’s rich in monounsaturated fatty acids and low in polyunsaturated fatty acids, making it much more heat stable than other nut oils.

It’s important to use heat stable lipids when formulating a cleansing balm, as the hot water used to wash your face will oxidize unstable oils. There has been some debate, but some research has suggested that using oxidized oils on your skin can accelerate aging.

Olivem 1000

This cleansing balm’s secret ingredient is Olivem 1000, a natural olive-derived emulsifier. Olivem 1000 is what makes this balm able to effortlessly emulsify and cut through makeup, sunscreen, and sebum.

Due to Olivem 1000’s viscous texture, it’s best to remove the cleansing balm using a hot washcloth before following it up with your usual cleanser.

DIY Chocolate Cleansing Balm Recipe with Bacuri Butter

Ingredients:

1/4 cup/54.5 g bacuri butter
1/4 cup/54.5 g cocoa butter
2 tbsp/26.7 g macadamia oil
1 tsp/4.8 g Olivem 1000
5-10 drops cocoa absolute

Supplies:

Double boiler
Whisk
Glass jar or stainless steel container for storage

Instructions:

Begin by melting the bacuri butter and cocoa butter in a double boiler (or makeshift double boiler) on medium heat. Whisk frequently to break any lumps.

Add the Olivem 1000 and whisk until combined. Once the Olivem 1000 has been completely incorporated, remove the mixture from heat and allow it to cool for 5-10 minutes.

Turn the heat to low and add the cocoa absolute, if desired. Leave it to infuse for at least 10 minutes, whisking frequently. Note: cocoa absolute is not soluble in oil, so it will not dissolve completely into the mixture. Allowing it to infuse ensures that its aroma will permeate the balm.

Once the cocoa absolute has infused, remove the mixture from heat and allow it to cool once again for 5-10 minutes, but do not allow it to solidify. Once cooled, add the macadamia oil and whisk again to combine.

Pour your cleansing balm into a glass or stainless steel container of your choice. Place in the refrigerator to set for at least an hour. After it sets, your balm can be kept at room temperature.

Your face will be left clean and soft while you enjoy the subtle aroma of deep, dark chocolate.

Chocolate Cleansing Balm Recipe Notes:

The cocoa absolute is an optional ingredient. The cocoa butter alone will give the cleansing balm a lovely chocolate scent; but if desired, the cocoa absolute will provide an even more potent dark chocolate aroma. Please be aware that since cocoa absolute can be a sensitizing ingredient, we recommend omitting it if you have sensitive skin.

How to use this DIY chocolate cleansing balm.

To use your DIY chocolate cleansing balm, massage a generous amount into dry skin and allow it to emulsify your makeup. Then, soak a dark colored washcloth in hot (but not too hot) water and drape it over your face to open your pores. (We recommend using a dark colored washcloth since bacuri butter has the tendency to stain lighter fabrics.)

Gently glide the cloth over your skin to remove the balm, taking care not to tug, especially around the delicate eye area. Your skin should feel clean at this point, but you can follow it up with your usual face cleanser to remove all traces of makeup. As always, a gentle, sulfate-free cleanser is preferable.

If using the oil cleansing method, you can repeat this process until your skin feels completely clean of makeup, omitting the cleanser.

If you prefer not to use a washcloth, you can also use wet cotton pads to remove the balm. We recommend high-quality, unbleached organic cotton pads whenever possible.

Who is this DIY chocolate cleansing balm suited for?

Due to the composition of this cleansing balm, it’s best suited to normal, dry, or mature skin types that require a lot of moisture. This recipe may also work for oily skin types, but only when not accompanied by acne. Bacuri butter, cocoa butter and especially macadamia oil are all very high in oleic acid, which can exacerbate both regular and fungal acne.

How To Be Beautiful Inside & Out

Tips to Make Inner Beauty Shine

Beauty isn’t just skin deep. Beauty also comes from the inside. It’s your heart, your compassion, the help you offer your community. It’s lifting one another up or offering a simple kindness. With all the hate and violence currently taking place in the United States, I think it’s more important than ever to let your inner beauty shine through. That’s why, my first beauty tip for women is to lift other women up.

Recently I attended a local event in which some of the women attending did just that. I was in the women’s restroom (where it’s impossible not to end up when wine is involved) surrounded by a group of women somewhat older than myself. So, I asked, “How do you handle aging? Your body is changing constantly. Your hormones are out of control. And exactly why does no one prepare your for perimenopause like they do for puberty during adolescence?” They laughed. They also acknowledged that I was right. And they not only gave me the best advice, they made me feel included in my discovery of the ever so mysterious circumstances of aging.

This brings me to my second (of many) natural beauty tips. Because those women’s advice was to, no matter what, be confident. Because confidence is beautiful. Own your life, your body and everything about yourself. Take all the wonderful things about you and let them shine. Then use your confidence to speak up others, stand up for the underdog and to be kind to others.

Natural Beauty Tips for Skin, Hair & Health

Taking time out to care for your skin, hair and health not only helps you look better, it’s also a wonderful way to practice self care. Following of some of my own favorite natural beauty tips as well a few tips from several of my favorite fellow bloggers.

Tackle your adult acne with these natural beauty tips.

Adult acne can be a beast. And it’s not always easy to control. With hormones that are constantly changing throughout our lifetime, preventing acne can be a struggle. Before you see a dermatologist however – or decide to throw in the towel – I recommend trying probiotics. I know I’ve mentioned probiotics a lot lately, but it’s because they really do work! I take Lovebug’s Here’s the Skinny Daily Probiotic. It’s not only cleared up my skin, it also has significantly diminished hormone breakouts from perimenopause. This is the only brand of probiotics I take now.

Retinol serum from Kate Blanc Cosmetics. Natural acne treatment and anti-aging serum. Combined with Hyaluronic Acid and Jojoba Oil, Kate Blanc's Retinol Serum provides superior results with less irritation. It easily soak into your skin without leaving an oily greasy feeling.

Unfortunately, even if you do everything right, you can still end up with an acne break out. Stress, hormones – even sneaking in that junk food! – can lead to those occasional volcanic facial eruptions. I’ve found that organic neem oil works wonders at pulling whiteheads to the surface of those painful red bumps literally overnight. In addition, retinol is also another great acne treatment to help keep your skin clear. This retinol serum from Kate Blanc Cosmetics is specially formulated with hyaluronic acid and jojoba oil to fight both aging and acne. Bacuri butter works great too! Or give one of these natural acne remedies a try.

Of course, getting rid of acne isn’t the only blemish you have to contend with. When I get desperate to clear up that horrid giant pimple that won’t pop, sometimes I over treat it. Then I have a blob of dry skin or a scab left in its place which looks as bad as, if not worse than, the pimple did. Luckily my Allure beauty box arrived in the knick of time with a free sample of  Sunday Riley Good Genes Lactic Acid Treatment. It quickly gets rid of the dry skin around those zits that didn’t want to heal. So you can spend less time picking your face and more time amazed by how great your skin looks.

Oral care natural beauty tips.

While not all of us have dental insurance, or can afford regular cleanings, there steps that you can take to help keep both your teeth and gums healthy. After all, who doesn’t want a beautiful smile? One of the easiest things you can do to promote oral health is to floss. Flossing your teeth everyday helps to prevent your gum line from receding. Something that is a concern for all of us as we age.

Brushing your teeth too hard can also lead to a receding gum line. However, something as simple as switching to an electric toothbrush can help if you’re guilty of being a bit overzealous when your brush. My boyfriend’s dentist recently advised that he he was brushing too hard which was causing his gum line to recede. So Greg bought us both Oral B electric toothbrushes like this one, which his dentist indicated could help remedy the problem.

In addition to daily flossing and brushing, I also switched to a fluoride free toothpaste. Studies have shown that excess consumption of fluoride can lead to brittle bone disease. As my local water is fluoridated, reducing my fluoride intake is even more important to me as I age. Women especially are at risk of losing bone density and strength after menopause. Therefore, in addition to taking supplements of vitamin D3 daily, I also filter my drinking water through my Brita pitcher. I’ve also switched to a fluoride free toothpaste.

I’ve used every kind of name brand toothpaste at some point. None of the big toothpaste brands, however, have worked as well as Jason Powersmile Whitening Paste. This natural toothpaste is fluoride free, SLS free and gluten free. I have sensitive teeth. However, I’ve had zero problems with sensitivity after switching to this toothpaste. Additionally, the plaque that likes to collect on my bottom teeth (both between teeth and along the gum line) has completely disappeared since using this toothpaste. My teeth literally look “dentist clean.” (And this was before the electric toothbrushes made their way into our bathroom.)

Natural beauty tips for hair care.

There’s nothing like a bad hair day to make a bad day even more stressful. Fighting with your hair can be the worst. But no one wants to get stuck putting one’s hair in a ponytail just to be done with it.

The texture and condition of my hair has changed a LOT since turning forty. Not only do I have stray gray hairs popping up here and there, my hair is also drier and more coarse than it was earlier in my life. Having grown up in the 80s, I did a lot of damage to my hair. From Sun In products, to straight up bleaching and crazy curly perms, I put my hair through some chaos. My hair’s been every color from a horrible brassy blonde to blue, black and pink. Once I finally grew my hair out in my late twenties, I vowed to never put it through that kind of abuse again.

Instead, I’ve started applying henna every few months. Made from completely natural plant botanicals, henna doesn’t JUST color hair. It also conditions your hair, adds shine and gives hair extra volume. Henna lasts about three months.  And it naturally fades out of your hair. So unlike chemical hair color, it doesn’t leave obvious roots. It’s also a much healthier hair color alternative. I always know when it’s time to apply more henna because my hair becomes difficult to manage at that point.

Not only does henna do a great job at conditioning my hair, I also love that it hides the few grays I have sneaking in. It works great for hair that’s less than 10% gray. However, if you have more than 10% gray you have to use a 2-step process for the color to hold. Light Mountain Natural Hair Color and Conditioner, which is the brand available at my local co-op, also offers henna hair color products that work for gray hair in addition to their regular henna hair color. And it’s not just available in red. You can also purchase various shades of brown, auburn and black.

Natural herbal hair conditioner from Night Blooming. HennaSooq's Henna Gloss Bar is the perfect all in one moisturizer, and conditioning Ayurvedic hair treatment. A henna gloss is a very easy to use henna product that will nourish the hair, strengthen, create vibrant shiny hair, promote hair growth, reduces itchy scalp, and will give your hair a touch of red color from the henna.

If henna sounds amazing, but you don’t want to add color, you can also purchase neutral henna hair coloring. This product offers all the benefits of henna without a noticeable color deposit. However, it’s not recommended for light hair. Alternately, you can also purchase Organic Zizyphus Spina Christi. This botanical hair care product conditions hair in a way similar to henna but without depositing ANY color, even on white hair. Like henna, you’ll find that this herbal conditioner provides body, aids with detangling and also conditions your scalp. For hair that needs extra conditioning, I highly recommend HennaSooq’s Henna Gloss Bar, which I’ve used in the past with wonderful results.

Before you try henna, you’ll need to be sure you haven’t processed your hair with chemical hair coloring or a perm in the past three months. Also be aware, that the processing time is somewhat consuming. While I’ve found I can easily use henna hair coloring at home without extra hands, processing time ranges from two to four hours depending on the depth of color you are looking for. Additionally, it will give your hair an herbal smell similar to spinach for several days afterward.

My favorite place to purchase henna is from Night Blooming on Etsy. She sells not only henna coloring and conditioner, but also essential oil blends, hair oils and rinses and other related natural hair care products. Or try moringa oil for a fabulous one-ingredient hot oil hair treatment.

Natural beauty tips to promote skin health and combat dry skin.

If you suffer from dry skin or eczema, then these natural beauty tips (and recipes!) will be perfect for you.

A few years back I struggled with several bouts of extremely dry skin and patches of eczema. Lotion and body butters helped initially, but then they would make my skin extra itchy. They also never really solved my dilemma. No matter how much lotion I used, at the end of the day, my skin was still dry and its condition never actually improved. Rather, the products I was using to treat my dry skin were only temporarily masking the issue.

I finally stumbled onto the perfect, natural dry skin remedy – hemp seed oil. Hemp seed oil is an exceptionally rich oil high in essential omega fatty acids and proteins. Produced from the oil of cold pressed seeds of the hemp plant, hemp seed oil provides the four essential fatty acids beneficial to the skin. (Linoleic acid, alpha-linoleic acid, gamma linolenic acid and stearidonic acid.) In fact, hemp seed oil has one of the highest contents of essential fatty acid contents topping out at 76%!

This non-greasy carrier oil absorbs quickly and easily when applied to skin without clogging pores. Its natural anti-inflammatory properties make it especially beneficial for irritated or eczema prone skin. My DIY dry skin body oil recipe with hemp seed oil, that I created a few years back, ended up being one of the best natural remedies I’ve tried to date.

Refrigeration, however, is recommended for hemp seed oil as it has a short shelf life. Therefore, when using this oil to make your own natural dry skin care products, you may want to consider adding an antioxidant to extend the shelf life.

Alternately, you can also try using hemp seed butter in its stead. Unlike hemp seed oil, hemp seed butter is shelf stable and has an extended shelf life of two years. It’s wonderfully moisturizing and is particularly beneficial for dry or damaged skin, eczema, psoriasis and mastalgia. Hemp seed butter is produced using the fatty fractions and unsaponifiables which are collected during the refining process and are then blended with hydrogenated vegetable oil to produce a butter-like material suitable for use on skin and hair.

Moisturizing Hemp Antioxidant Facial Serum (Diamond Serenity) for Dry Skin. This Hemp Antioxidant Facial Serum works for all skin types! It is light in consistency but contains deep moisturizing properties and is rich in nutrients, protein and antioxidants and is the ideal daytime moisturizer.

If making your own natural skin care products isn’t for you, then I highly recommend the natural skin care and beauty products from Diamond Hemp. All of the products available from Diamond Hemp are made in the USA using natural cold pressed hemp seed oil. They carry a full line of hemp care bath and body products that includes body butters, body scrubs, facial masks, facial serums and anti-aging creams.

Natural Anti Aging Antioxidant Cream with hemp oil. This Diamond Aloha antioxidant cream is made with organic antioxidants and pure hemp oil to help maintain a healthy youthful glow while fighting the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It also contains neem oil, which I previously mentioned to help fight acne, as well as willow bark extract which contains anti-inflammatory salicin which is similar to acne fighting salicylic acid.

In addition to natural skin care products, you can also promote skin health with beauty tools. My friend and fellow blogger, Cari of Everything Pretty, recommends dry brushing as one of her top natural beauty tips to promote healthy skin. Not only does dry brushing exfoliate skin and help to increase circulation, it also may help reduce acne breakouts. Cari also likes dry brushing because it just feels good. The massaging motion is a simple and easy way to sneak extra self care into her busy schedule and it gives her a boost of energy. Natural beauty tips for face mask lovers.

If you love face masks then you’ve got to try these natural beauty tips from A Life Adjacent and Country Hill Cottage!

Natural beauty tips for face mask lovers. This DIY caffeine face mask from A Life Adjacent packs a serious punch against stubborn water retention. Thanks to natural ingredients like matcha & organic instant coffee, this mask has enough caffeine to get rid of a puffy face in an instant. Read on to learn how to make this fast-acting & de-bloating DIY coffee face mask!

Kim and Kyla of A Life Adjacent use caffeine as part of their morning skin care routine. By adding instant coffee and matcha powder to their face masks, they’ve found it works wonders at combating puffiness and bloating. This can sometimes happen when they overindulge on carbs. However, you may experience this if you had a bit too much to drink the night before. You can find the caffeine face mask recipe that Kim and Kyla use here. Not only does if fight that stubborn water retention, it’s made with natural ingredients you can find in your kitchen. (Or try this Awake Facial Mask from Wicked Soaps on Etsy!)

They also suggest using raw honey as a morning facial wash when your skin doesn’t feel dirty enough to use a real cleanser. Not only does it gently cleanse facial skin, it won’t dry it out like soap and other cleansers can. This is especially helpful when the air is cold and dry during the winter months.

Sisters Irena and Cyna of Country Hill Cottage, on the other hand, turn to papaya to revitalize dull and dry skin. Papayas are, of course, wonderful for your health both inside and out! These fruits are rich in vitamins A and C, a powerful antioxidant, and many minerals, such as calcium, iron, phosphorus, copper and potassium. They also contain the enzyme papain, which is fabulous for skin. This gentle exfoliant helps unclog pores and restore skin’s elasticity.

To get glowing skin for your face, you can prepare their quick and easy papaya face mask! Simply mash 1/2 fresh papaya (without seeds) and combine with 1 tsp honey and 1 tsp olive oil. Apply the mask to your face, then leave on for 10 to 15 minutes. Then remove and rinse your face. Pat dry for brighter, glowing skin.

Natural beauty tips for health and wellness.

You can also promote beautiful, healthy looking skin from the inside out. Kim and Kyla both add collagen powder to their morning coffee for better skin and hair. They love that it makes their coffee extra creamy. Not being able to taste it in the coffee is another big plus. (Especially for those of us who are picky about things like butter coffee and avocado toast.) Or you can also try collagen in this healthy Collagen Hot Cocoa Mix from Ginger Berry Organics.
