DIY Crayon Canvas ArtworkMy co-worker Erica, who made me a set of lovely coasters last Christmas, has been getting her craft on recently to bring some new life to her office here at work. Inspired by projects she discovered on Pinterest, she created a lovely collection of new “attire” for her blank walls. (Please excuse the quality of these pics. I photographed them with my cell phone.)

Crayon Canvas Paintings - DIY Art Project for your walls that's both inexpensive and easyErica made these crayon “paintings” from a box of crayons – with back to school right around the corner you can pick these up for super cheap! – artist canvas, a hot glue gun and a hair dryer. Simply use a hot glue gun to glue crayons along the top of a blank canvas, then use a hair dryer to melt the crayons so the colors run down the canvas creating a one of kind work of art.

Mod Podge Scrapbook Paper Wall Covering Art DIYThese works of art were created using square canvases, scrapbook papers, mod podge and paint. Simply cut scrapbook papers to fit the canvas size and use mod podge to adhere the decorative papers to the front of the canvas. Once dry, paint around the sides of the canvas – based on Erica’s paper choices she used brown paint – and lightly brush paint around the edges of the papers on the front. Let dry and hang!

DIY Ruler Clip Board OrganizerErica also made a place to hold and organize her important notes and phone lists she uses on a daily basis. She purchased jumbo clothespins, painted them black then glued them to a yard stick. She initially tried to hot glue the clothespins but found that they didn’t hold with hot glue. I recommended E-6000 glue (craft adhesive) since it holds just about everything and it worked like a charm.

I finally found that part time job I’d been searching for, and this past Friday I started my first day of work as an office assistant. It’s a great job, and while I still have a lot to learn, I’m excited to not only be working for a small family owned company, but to have friendly and awesome co-workers as well. As it turns out, however, I now have two offices. The office at work and my office at home. So of course I found myself in need of a few home office organizing tips.

While there’s not a lot I can do about the office that isn’t mine – at least there are no scary cubicles lurking about – I can find ways to make mine better organized. Because no matter what there never seems to be quite enough desk space to keep the clutter at bay without daily filing. And drawers tend to eat important necessities that I need for running my office smoothly. To solve this problem I’ve taken to seeking out the advice of others on the subject of office organization. Following are some of the brilliant tips and projects I’ve found.

Home Office Organizing Tips + DIY Projects

Here are some of my favorite home office organizing tips!

Desk space is always going to limit you, so the key to finding more space is looking up. Use the walls to hang clip boards with notes, schedules and other important papers and to do lists you need to keep up with. Utilize the hooks above the clip boards for small, less often used objects. A roll of tape, scissors, rubber bands…whatever your mind can conjure up.

You may also remember from my earlier blog post, Helpful Tips for Everyday Success, which included another idea for storing “up.” Bring an inexpensive, plastic pegboard into the home office to hang over your desk or on the wall beside your desk. Add hooks and containers to the pegboard and bring everything you need on a daily basis right in front of you, just above your computer. That post also has some great tips for cord organization.

Again, if your short on desk space then you don’t want bins stacking up for incoming and outgoing mail. Instead, create a diy mail sorter with this simple tutorial from bright and blithe blog. Made from unbleached cotton, this mail sorter can be hung on a neighboring door or wall. The tutorial includes printable labels for “action required,” “to be paid,” “to be filed,” and “to be sorted.”

Again, if you’re looking to create more desk space, look up, and organize with a wine rack. Attaching under the shelf wine or stemware racks to a wall bookshelf, gives you more room for those everyday supplies. Simply insert glass cylinders in the racks then fill with pens, pencils, markers, and even paint brushes.

I Heart Organizing offers more insight into ways to create more room for more concise organization. Attach baskets to walls for folders, reference guides or craft papers. Attach a towel bar or rail above your desk space with hooks for hanging scissors, tape, and Asker Cups from Ikea that can hold pens, pencils and more.

Hide your filing cabinet inside a chest when not in use by creating a Mini Office in a Chest. Not only does this allow you to hide important papers out of view in a room that you might not want to look like an office, it can also double as extra seating by throwing a few throw pillows on top. This chest is large enough to hold a mountain of files, plus it allows for extra storage on TOP of your files with a removable tray that stacks neatly over files for extra paper clips, staples, etc. The inside of the chest drawer doubles as a corkboard for pinning important notices.

Use the side of your desk for more storage room and places to tack notes. Install a magnetic knife wall mount to the side of your desk or a shelving unit and attach magnetic hooks. Use it to hang your keys, purse, or even binder clips with notes.

Sometimes things can be a little overwhelming. So why not try a few life hacks to make it simpler? This collection of helpful tips are a great start!

Life hacks for helping make life easier and keep your space organized! 8 helpful tips that turn everyday into a success! #lifehack #lifetips #diy #cleaning #lifestyle

Life isn’t always easy, and it’s been a lot harder. Otherwise we wouldn’t have so many nifty inventions for gadgets to simplify our lives. I know I couldn’t live without my immersion stick blender. I can’t imagine the time it would take to make soap without it!

Still, between work and family and just living, anything we can do to make things simpler and save time are always helpful. Here are a few helpful tips I’ve compiled to make your day of household chores and organizing easier.

Helpful Tips for Lifestyle + Living

1.) Mason Jar as a Blender Jar – If your blender canister breaks, you can easily replace it with a mason jar by screwing it onto the blade and save money by not having to replace the entire blender. Plus, it’s perfect for making salad dressings, marinades, and spreads all in one container with no transfer later. Just be careful. Avoid using hot liquids and don’t fill the jar more than halfway. (Via Real Simple.)

2.) Pegboard Organization – Move the pegboard out of the garage and bring into the home office. If you’re like me you’re always lacking desk space and finding things in drawers can be daunting and time consuming. Bring everything you need into view by creating a pegboard organizational space above your desk. (Via Heart of Wisdom.)

3.) Freezer Meals – With a busy lifestyle finding time to cook can be scarce. Not to mention buying frozen dinners can be expensive. Use your free time to create meals for the entire week and freeze them for lunches and quick solo dinners later. This handy article contains tips on freezing basics, foods that don’t freeze well, freezing containers, the effects of freezing on spices, and even some recipes for foods that do freeze well like stuffed shells, bourbon chicken, and lemon cupcakes. (Via Or So She Says.)

4.) Cord Organization Tips – Use metal clips to organize your cords for your gadgets and chargers on the side of a desk or table so you aren’t hunting down a cord every time you need to plug in your laptop or ipod. You can also use bread tags as cord labels by writing the cord type on the tag and clipping it to the cord. (Via Be Different Act Normal.)

5.) Makeup Brush Storage – Make makeup brushes easy to find and keep them dry by storing them in upright in containers filled with clear plastic beads. (Via Liz Marie Blog.)

6.) Re-use Pour Spouts – Re-use spouts from salt canisters on mason jars by cutting the lid with spout from your salt container, measuring to fit your canning jar ring and attaching to your mason jar. Fill the mason jars with anything you use often like sugar or non-dairy creamer. (Via Thrifty Fun.)

7.) Water Dispenser – Use a dustpan to fill up buckets in sink areas where buckets won’t fit in the sink. (Via Pinterest.)

8.) Car Trash Receptacle – Use a cereal storage container as a trash bin for your car. The lid keeps trash in while you’re driving. (Via Better Homes & Gardens.)
