As if being overrun with soapmaking supplies wasn’t bad enough, I also have a rather large craft stash. Among these items was an Ikea MOPPE mini storage chest. Being short on space since moving in with my best friend this past December, I decided it was finally time to put this storage chest to good use. Thus, this DIY crafts desk organizer became my first Ikea hack.

I love the bright colors I chose to use for this project. As my bedroom/office area is mostly gray, the bold pop of colors really added a bit of the cheer and fun that reflects my personality. (As you may recall my kitchen table makeover from this past summer.)

Additionally, this storage chest makeover freed up additional shelving on my double trestle desk I bought from Target recently. So I really love all the extra desktop storage space I now have as a result of my DIY crafts desk organizer.

While the Ikea MOPPE mini storage chest is currently not available, you can easily recreate this DIY crafts desk organizer idea using a similar unfinished wood storage chest or desktop organizer.

What to Do:

Begin by painting the outside of each of the box drawers, the cabinet and the wood shapes for your DIY crafts desk organizer. You’ll need two to three coats of paint on all of the surfaces depending on the quality of your paint.

I also painted the inside of the box drawers in contrasting colors. And, because of the footed foundations I chose to use for my crafts desk organizer, I chose to use the bottom drawer on top of my organizer. This in turn gave me additional shelf space on the bottom and created a tray space on top for supplies I use the most.

Once the paint dries, you can add decorative washi tape to your DIY crafts desk organizer as desired. Then spray your storage cabinet with two or three coats of a clear acrylic sealer to keep the washi tape in place or to further protect your cabinet.

Once the sealer dries, use E-6000 to adhere the curio knobs to the the notches in the drawers. You can also use the same adhesive to glue on your painted wooden shapes as desired. If needed you can use masking tape to hold the curio knobs in place until the glue has set up. (Note that it can take up to 72 hours for E-6000 to fully set up.)

Now use the E-6000 to glue the footed foundation onto the bottom of your DIY crafts desk organizer.

Once the glue has cured, you can put everything together. I added some cute decorative cups to the bottom shelf that I found at Target’s Dollar Spot. All that’s left is to fill your DIY crafts desk organizer with your craft supplies and tools!

I used my crafts desk organizer to store my paint markers, pens, markers and pencils.

It also gave me a LOT of extra room to stash all of my washi tape.

Things like decorative favor bags, scissors, glue and baker’s twine also found new homes!

Pinterest Inspired DIY Artwork for Home & Office

DIY Crayon Canvas ArtworkMy co-worker Erica, who made me a set of lovely coasters last Christmas, has been getting her craft on recently to bring some new life to her office here at work. Inspired by projects she discovered on Pinterest, she created a lovely collection of new “attire” for her blank walls. (Please excuse the quality of these pics. I photographed them with my cell phone.)

Crayon Canvas Paintings - DIY Art Project for your walls that's both inexpensive and easyErica made these crayon “paintings” from a box of crayons – with back to school right around the corner you can pick these up for super cheap! – artist canvas, a hot glue gun and a hair dryer. Simply use a hot glue gun to glue crayons along the top of a blank canvas, then use a hair dryer to melt the crayons so the colors run down the canvas creating a one of kind work of art.

Mod Podge Scrapbook Paper Wall Covering Art DIYThese works of art were created using square canvases, scrapbook papers, mod podge and paint. Simply cut scrapbook papers to fit the canvas size and use mod podge to adhere the decorative papers to the front of the canvas. Once dry, paint around the sides of the canvas – based on Erica’s paper choices she used brown paint – and lightly brush paint around the edges of the papers on the front. Let dry and hang!

DIY Ruler Clip Board OrganizerErica also made a place to hold and organize her important notes and phone lists she uses on a daily basis. She purchased jumbo clothespins, painted them black then glued them to a yard stick. She initially tried to hot glue the clothespins but found that they didn’t hold with hot glue. I recommended E-6000 glue (craft adhesive) since it holds just about everything and it worked like a charm.

DIY Washi Tape Storage Box Idea for Easily Organizing Your Washi TapeNeed a simple DIY way to organize your washi tape? Upcycle boxes! This adorable and sturdy box from Beauty Army contained my monthly selection of beauty samples. However, once emptied it’s the perfect size for storing rolls of washi tape! You can stack several of these one on top of the other and label the outside of each box with the style of washi tape inside – chevron, argyle, solids, stripes, etc. – if you have a massive collection. (I’m not quite there yet.) How do you store your washi tape?

Things I Love Lately

I’ve made lots of new discoveries of fabulous products lately. Here are just a handful of my many latest favorite that I thought deserved some love.
Limited Edition Birchbox - From the Garden

From the Garden Birchbox – Birchbox is a nifty site for those of us that love to try new products. You can get a monthly box subscription for just $10 a month that includes trial-sized samples from both well-known brands and emerging gems for everything from beauty products to home and garden. There’s currently a four week waiting list for the women’s monthly box and a two week waiting list for the men’s.However, in the meantime, you can browse their shop and even pick up their limited edition From the Garden Birchbox filled with seasonal picks. It’s an $89 value available for just $32. I purchased this exclusive box for myself and am anxiously awaiting its arrival. I’m also on the waiting list.

They also offer free shipping on products from the current month’s box, free shipping on full size product orders of $50 or more, free returns within 90 days of purchase and free samples and gifts from their bonus shop.

Adagio Thai Chai Tea – It wasn’t that long ago that I purchase a 40 oz. glass pitcher from Adagio Teas along with some Mango Iced Tea pouches when they were offering a special bundle at a reduced price. You simply add one iced tea pouch to the pitcher, fill with cold water and refrigerate overnight. In the morning, you have delicious iced tea with almost no work. This has now become my new favorite way to make tea especially since the fibro can make some of the simplest task one of the worst chores. However, you aren’t restricted to their iced tea pouches. You can use any tea you like. I’ve done with with other teas from Adagio that aren’t offered in the iced tea sized pouches as well as teas from other brands. If you buy the 40oz. (4 cup) glass pitcher, simply use four tea bags and allow to “steep” overnight removing the tea bags the following morning. For a plastic quart sized pitcher, use eight tea bags.

Love iced chai? I’m particularly fond of Adagio’s Thai Chai Tea (pictured.) I simply put four tea bags in my 40 oz. pitcher, fill with water and leave overnight. The following morning I fill my glass water bottle three fourths of the way with tea, add a dash of half and half, and a little bit of sugar, then shake. Then I take it with me to work for lunch!

I love that Adagio offers free shipping on orders of $49 or more or the option of low flat rate shipping of just $3.75 for all other orders. Shipping is always super quick and they also offer a rewards program where you can earn points toward free gift certificates.

Eco Friendly Reusable Snack & Sandwich Bag Set from Colorful House – If you’ve been looking for more ways to go green then I recommend the handmade reusable snack and sandwich bags from Colorful House. The color combinations of these cotton bags are modern and all grown up and the inner water resistant ripstop nylon shell keeps food fresh for lunch. Colorful House also sells super cute children’s stuffed toys – including stuffed Dachshunds! – and children’s room decor.

I also love the affordable unpaper cloth napkins from Little Green Nest.

Divide and Conquer Purse OrganizerDivide and Conquer sells an entire line of brilliant handmade purse organizers in all shapes and sizes to keep the purse digging to a minimum. I think these are especially brilliant for busy moms who carry everything for those “just in case” moments and fashionistas who like to have their beauty products handy at all times.
