For the love of pumpkin spice.

OMG. Summer has just dragged on forever this year. But basic or not, I’m so ready for pumpkin spice season! My boyfriend, on the other hand, is just psyched it’s finally football season again. While he’s cheering on the Jacksonville Jaguars, you can find me sneaking across the street for a pumpkin spice latte at our local Starbucks.

I just can’t resist the warm, spicy taste of pumpkin spice – or the fragrant scent! So when I found out that Grove Collaborative now has Mrs. Meyer’s cleaning products in their new fall scents, I was instantly sold. Mrs. Meyer’s has three great scents for fall – mum, apple cider and pumpkin.

If you aren’t already a Grove customer, you can score a free trio of Mrs. Meyer’s cleaning products in your scent of choice. You’ll also get a replaceable head dish brush, free shipping and a free VIP trial when you make your first $20 purchase. You have to hurry, though, as this is a super limited time offer.

I’m a VIP member at Grove and I love that I can get free shipping AND a free gift with every order (with a minimum purchase.) Last month I scored a FREE Grove Collaborative bamboo prep board.

I’ve also gotten completely hooked on their European dish cloth set. These durable and absorbent sponge cloths are perfect for messes – and they helped my boyfriend give up his paper towel habit. Because these sponges are reusable, you simply pop them into the dishwasher to easily disinfect and clean them. If you’ve been working toward a zero waste lifestyle that reduces your carbon footprint, these dish cloths are a must!

Now if I can just break Greg of his Keurig coffee and convert him over to my favorite, lower acidity cold brew.

Once you’ve scored your free cleaning kit from Grove, be sure to check out these great tips for preparing your home for fall. Plus be sure to try one or more of my favorite pumpkin spice skin care and beauty recipes at the end of this post.

Fall homemaking & cleaning tips.

1. I’m not usually a baker (that’s more of my roomie’s expertise) but something about pumpkin spice season always inspires me to whip up an apple pie or a batch of pumpkin muffins. When that happens, Mrs. Meyer’s dish soap and the Grove replaceable head dish brush are perfect for a quick cleanup! Plus, they make a pretty sink-side display.

2. A fresh towel is such an underrated way to add some seasonal vibes to your kitchen. Grove’s heirloom red kitchen towel adds a pop of fall color and can handle the toughest messes.

Whether we’re hosting a casual cookout or a football party, fall is my favorite time of year to entertain. My roommate and I always make sure the guest bathroom is stocked with fluffy hand towels, plenty of toilet paper, and of course a seasonal hand soap. I receive so many compliments on Mrs. Meyer’s fall fragrances (and guests always want to know where I got them since our local stores sell out so quickly!)

3. Brisk fall days are perfect for tackling outdoor tasks and preparing your home for winter. Mrs. Meyer’s multi-surface is the only cleaner you need for wiping down patio furniture, light fixtures, and metal railings. Plus, the bold scents give you a boost of energy while you’re cleaning!

4. As the nights get cooler, it’s time to pull out your cozy fall bedding. To make your favorite blanket even softer and cozier, add a few drops of Grove’s lavender essential oil to Grove’s wool dryer balls before you toss them in the dryer!

My roommate, Bambi, wasn’t really sure about the dryer balls when I first purchased them, but now she’s hooked. Not only does it make our laundry softer, it also reduces static and decreases drying time so we can save energy.

5. Switching over your closet? Before you store your summer clothes, give them a good wash with Method laundry detergent so they’re fresh for next season.

I love using Method’s 4x concentrated laundry detergent. I bought the ginger mango fragrance two months ago and still have a ton of detergent left. I love the scent. However I really love that it doesn’t irritate my sensitive skin. Not only is this detergent HE friendly – I use it at my boyfriend’s apartment too – the bottle is designed so the cap doesn’t get all gummy from measuring out the amount I need.

6. Just like I reach for different clothes once the weather gets cooler, I also reach for different skincare products. I can’t live without Grove’s nourishing coconut skin superfood — it can be used as a face and body moisturizer, cuticle cream, and even eye makeup remover!

7. The start of fall also means the start of cold and flu season! To keep the sniffles at bay, I always keep a Grove hydrating hand sanitizer spray in my purse or travel bag. (This stuff is AMAZING!)

8. Can you believe stores are already putting out Halloween decor? This year, I’m aiming for zero-waste with natural decor like pinecones, potted mums, and gourds. They look festive and don’t take up that much needed storage space!

9. Tip to save on your fall product needs: Once you’ve submitted your Grove order, you will be signed up for the free 60 day VIP trial. For 60 days, save even more with free shipping, free gifts, price matching, exclusive sales and personal service. What are you waiting for? Order today!

DIY Pumpkin Spice Soap

Ingredients:

4 oz. Stephenson Crystal Hemp Melt & Pour Soap Base
1.1 oz. liquid vegetable glycerin
.25 oz. cornstarch
.1 oz pumpkin pie spice fragrance oil
orange color bar or liquid orange soap colorant, optional
skin safe cosmetic mica powders in colors of choice
isopropyl alcohol

Instructions:

Using a digital scale, weigh out 4 oz. of the hemp melt & pour soap base and cut into chunks. Place the soap chunks in a glass Pyrex measuring cup or bowl, then heat in the microwave in 20-30 increments until melted. Add color to suit, if desired, and mix well.

Next, weigh out the cornstarch and glycerin and stir into the melted soap base. Follow with the fragrance oil, weighing out the necessary amount first.

Whisk the soap base with a fork until all of the cornstarch has dissolved and the soap starts to thicken. Once the soap has cooled and can be molded without sticking to your hands, it’s ready to use!

Working on a covered surface or parchment paper, shape the soap into a pumpkin with your hands the same way you would clay. You can use a butter knife to help add details around the pumpkin. Once you have a pumpkin shape you like, you can paint your pumpkin!

Simply mix a small amount of mica with isopropyl alcohol in a dish to desired consistency to create your soap paints. I used green, gold and copper micas to paint my DIY pumpkin spice soap.

I mixed the copper mica with alcohol first at a thinner consistency to push the paint into the grooves I made around the pumpkin.

Once I had mixed the color I simply used a small paint brush to paint the lines around my pumpkin shaped soap.

I then used a gold mica and alcohol to fill in the areas between those I painted copper. Finally, I mixed up green mica and isopropyl alcohol and used that color to paint the stem.

Once used, the mica will wash off, leaving behind an orange shaped pumpkin soap that smells like pumpkin spice!

Let’s face it. Mondays suck. The solution? That one’s tough. But a little morning pick-me-up can go a long way towards perking up your mood. While these homemade fall soaps aren’t going to magically make your workload a breeze, they will bring a smile to your face. Plus they’re a great little reminder that sometimes it’s the little things that can turn it all around.

Homemade Fall Soaps for the Perfect Morning Pick Me Up!

While my Mondays aren’t as insane as they used to be when I worked for someone else, they can still just as challenging. Don’t get me wrong. Self-employment has its merits and its perks. However, I still have weekly goals, challenges and deadlines that I have to meet to keep advertisers. Otherwise, I don’t make the money I need to live off of. And just like you, when you’re sick but don’t have paid sick days, I’m typing away at the computer planning social media or struggling through processing photos for my next DIY.

In fact, last week I had a fibro flare up. This was followed by a return of TMJ. Both of these things are aggravated by stress but also in turn cause more stress. So I had to find something to help break the cycle. In the end, it’s you all – and some of my long time fans – that reminded me that it’s all worth it. And that, no, I’m not just writing for myself but also people that I relate to and that relate to me. Browsing all of the new homemade falls soaps out now on Etsy – that brought it all back home.

The best homemade soaps for fall! These lovely artisan soaps are inspired by the colors and scents of fall and are the perfect Monday morning pick me up to start off your week!

As a former seller on Etsy myself (and no stranger to farmer’s markets either!) I wanted to share some of my favorite fall soaps that I discovered. These amazing soaps are not only inspiring, but the artisans who crafted these homemade fall soaps are also small businesses owners. Perhaps like yourself. So I hope you’ll take the time to check out the creative soapmaking ideas they developed to celebrate the season as well as support those artists and soapmakers you love in their endeavor by making a purchase.

I hope you enjoyed this small collection of some of my favorite homemade soaps for fall. I am continually impressed by how far soapmaking has come since Etsy was in beta when I first joined way back in 2005.

The collective of soapmaking suppliers, soapmakers and soapmaking groups has since grown and expanded into a wonderfully supportive community that’s not only helped women and men delve into a new hobby or business, but it’s also shown how amazing and creative we can be when we all work together and support one another. I thank everyone of you for your myriad of inspiration over the years.

DIY Glitter Perfume

© Rebecca Dawn Dillon

Ingredients:

3-4 scoops bio glitter in color(s) of choice
6 grams clear jojoba oil (or fractionated coconut oil)
1 gram skin safe fragrance oil* of choice

Instructions:

It’s important to note that different fragrance oils have different usage guidelines based on maximum safe skin exposure. Some fragrances, such as pumpkin spice, are only safe for skin when used at 3.3% of the recipe for perfumes. Others, like jackfruit & kiwi, are safe up to 43.8% of your perfume recipe.

The amount called for in the perfume recipe above assumes that the fragrance oil you’ve chosen is safe at up to a 14.2% usage rate* for perfume. (I’ll give you some recipes for using other fragrance oils further down as well as tell you how to figure out how much fragrance you need for fragrances oils with a lower skin safe usage rate.)

For accuracy you will need a digital scale to weigh the jojoba oil and fragrance oil. You will also need a 10 mL glass roll on bottle for each DIY glitter perfume you plan to make. I obtained my bottles in bulk from SKS Bottle & Packaging.

Begin by adding three to four .15cc scoops of glitter to an empty 10 mL bottle.

Then place the bottle on the scale. Tare and set the unit to grams. Using a graduated plastic transfer pipette, add 6 grams of jojoba oil to the bottle. Then tare your scale again, and using a fresh pipette, add 1 gram of fragrance oil. This should fill up your bottle.

Now snap the housing and stainless steel roller ball onto the bottle and screw on the cap. Shake well to mix.

To use, simply roll onto wrists, behind ears and other pulse points as desired. And don’t forget to shake the bottle whenever you like for a fun snow globe effect!

DIY Glitter Perfume! True glitter fans continue to discover glitter EVERYWHERE - even after an OCD house cleaning. If you're a fan of glitter (and you totally know what I mean!) then you simply cannot pass up this tutorial for making your own awesome DIY glitter perfume!

If desired you can also decorate our perfume bottles with washi tape and stickers like I did.

Some of my favorite fragrance oils that can be used according to the recipe above are jackfruit & kiwi, citrus blossoms & heliotrope and cyclamen & citron.

Want to use a different fragrance oil?

You should be able to find out from your supplier what the recommended usage rate is for the fragrance oil you’ve chosen. Once you have that amount, multiply the amount of jojoba oil by that percentage to figure out how much fragrance to use. For example, if the maximum skin safe usage rate for perfume is 8.5% you would multiply 6 grams by .085. This gives you .51 grams. So you would adjust the fragrance oil in the recipe to .5 grams or less.

If your scale isn’t sensitive enough to weigh out a half of a gram, then you can make two perfumes at once. Simply fill each bottle with the desired amount of glitter, then mix double the amount of jojoba oil (6 grams) and double the amount of fragrance oil (1 gram) in a small beaker. Then carefully fill each bottle with equal parts of your perfume mixture using either the beaker spout (assuming your hand is steadier than mine!) or a pipette.

Want to make pumpkin spice perfume? Pumpkin spice fragrance oil has a much lower skin safe usage rate for perfume. It’s only 3.3%. So I recommend making six of these at once. You’ll need 36 grams of jojoba oil and 1 gram of pumpkin spice fragrance oil. (I used gold bio glitter for my pumpkin spice DIY glitter perfume.) Combine in a beaker, mix well, then evenly distribute between the six bottles. (Alternately you can also buy pre-made pumpkin spice perfume!)

To create a candy crush DIY glitter perfume, I used unicorn bio glitter, 18 grams of jojoba oil and 2 grams of candy crush fragrance oil to make three roll on perfume bottles. See how that works? Easy peasy! (You can also use a percentage calculator if you need more help.)

Glitter Pumpkin Spice Body Butter Recipe

© Rebecca Dawn Dillon

Ingredients:

1.25 oz. refined shea butter
1.5 oz. kokum butter
.25 oz. candelilla wax
1 oz. pumpkin seed oil
.3 oz. kaolin (white cosmetic) clay
.4 oz. biodegradable gold glitter
.05 oz. pumpkin spice fragrance oil
1/2 mL vitamin E oil (optional)

Instructions:

You’ll need a digital scale to make my pumpkin spice body butter recipe as you’ll be weighing out all of the necessary ingredients with the exception of the vitamin E oil.

If you are planning to make more homemade bath and body recipes in the future, I highly recommend purchasing a Baker’s Math scale. Weighing ingredients is not only more accurate than using liquid measurements, but it also allows you to easily re-size a recipe by a percentage and figure the correct percentage of essential oils, fragrance oils and preservatives that you would need when changing a recipe or developing your own.

Begin by weighing out the shea butter, kokum butter and candelilla wax. Combine in a double boiler and heat over medium to medium-low heat until melted. Alternately, you can also combine your ingredients in a glass Pyrex measuring cup or a glass scientific beaker and heat in a microwave until melted at 40% power. (I’ve found that glass beakers come in super handy especially when making cream eyeshadows and lip balms!)

Once melted, remove from heat. Then weigh out the pumpkin seed oil and stir into the melted butters and wax. Follow with the fragrance oil and kaolin clay, weighing each ingredient first, then mixing into the body butter. Using a plastic graduated transfer pipette, measure out 1/2 mL (or about 10 drops) of the vitamin E oil and mix in.

Finally, weigh out the glitter. (I used eco-friendly biodegradable glitter from The Sparkle Party.) Use .4 oz. of glitter for a bold look or half the amount for a more subtle appearance. (Alternately, if glitter isn’t your thing, you can simply omit it entirely.) Whisk the glitter into the body butter mixture with a fork until well combined.

As the body butter starts to thicken, remix, then spoon into an eco-friendly 4 oz. brown paperboard jar with a lid. (You can find these recyclable, renewable and biodegradable brown paperboard containers at SKS Bottle & Packaging in a variety of sizes.)

A must have for seasonal holiday parties, not only does this moisturizing pumpkin spice body butter smell just like everyone's favorite pumpkin pie, but it also makes skin pop with glitzy eco-friendly glitter!

Once your pumpkin spice body butter fully solidifies, cap and label your container as desired for personal use or gifting. Washi tape and scrapbooking/planner stickers are a simple and easy way to add a bit of pizazz to your jars.

If you want to recreate my pumpkin spice body butter recipe to sell, you’ll need to follow good manufacturing practices (GMP) when making your product. You’ll find that the book, Good Manufacturing Practices for Soap and Cosmetic Handcrafters by Marie Gale, is a valuable resource if you’re just getting started making your own homemade soaps, skin care products and cosmetics.

In addition to GMP, you’ll also need to follow FDA guidelines for labeling your products. If you’re unsure about the rules and regulations regarding labeling cosmetics, the book, Soap and Cosmetic Labeling: How to Follow the Rules and Regs Explained in Plain English by Marie Gale, spells out everything you need to know to legally label your products.
