My friend, Cathy, inspired me to make this golden glowtion shimmer oil recipe after seeing my mermaid shimmer spray. However, she was a looking for a much bolder shimmer and a simpler recipe to recreate. Therefore, I kept the ingredients for my Cleopatra’s golden glowtion shimmer oil recipe extremely simple but added a lot more mica.

For those of you who aren’t destroying your kitchen on a regular basis like the rest of us, this easy 4-ingredient recipe will also help to make the startup costs for this project a lot more affordable.

However, if you prefer the dry oil recipe I used for my mermaid shimmer spray, you can use that one instead. Just be sure to either double that recipe or halve the amount of mica. (The mermaid shimmer spray recipe yields one 4 oz. container while this one yields two.)

The mica for this golden glowtion shimmer oil does settle when not in use. So be prepared for that. I wanted to avoid using emulsifiers and other more complicated ingredients simply for the sake of keeping the mica suspended in the product. I found that a light dry oil works fine for this application. You just need to shake the golden glowtion vigorously before each use for consistency.

The gold shimmer is dazzling when sprayed onto skin and massaged in. Cathy used it on her skin and ended up with something akin of a light shimmering tan. (She and I are both super pale.) However, I’m sure it would be just as stunning on dark skin as well!

We also chose a lip and eye safe gold sparkle mica for this project so you can use it anywhere your heart desires. I hope you have fun with this recipe!

To use, vigorously shake the bottle to evenly remix the ingredients (the mica will settle) then spray onto skin and massage in.

No one wants to douse themselves in heavy, greasy feeling oils, especially in summer. So I formulated my mermaid shimmer body spray as a dry oil body spray. It sprays on and absorbs quickly so there’s greasy after feel. What’s left behind is soft, shimmering skin and a lovely fragrance!

Even better, this mermaid shimmer body spray is super easy to make. Just weigh, measure and mix the ingredients. Your final product is then ready in under ten minutes!

Ingredients:

.5 oz. rosehip seed oil
1 oz. clear jojoba oil
1.25 oz. fractionated coconut oil
1 oz. apricot kernel oil
.1 oz. skin safe fragrance oil
2 mL vitamin E oil (optional)
1/4 teaspoon cellini blue mica powder (or similar)
4 teaspoons super pearly white mica powder

Instructions:

You will need a digital scale and a set of measuring spoons for my mermaid shimmer body spray recipe. You’ll also need a graduated plastic transfer pipette to measure out the vitamin E oil.

Begin by weighing out the rosehip seed oil, jojoba  oil, fractionated coconut oil and apricot kernel oil. Combine in a glass beaker or a glass Pyrex measuring cup. Stir to combine.

Now weigh out your fragrance oil of choice and mix into the container of oils. I used a Citrus Blossoms & Heliotrope fragrance oil for my mermaid shimmer body spray recipe.

Using a graduated plastic transfer pipette, measure out the vitamin E oil and stir in. (Learn more about vitamin E oil and its use in DIY skin care here.)

Next, using a teaspoon measurement, measure out the micas and add to the oils. Stir vigorously until the mica is fully incorporated into the dry body oil base. There shouldn’t be any clumps and the color should be uniform throughout.

Note: Swap out the cellini blue mica for another color to customize the final color of your mermaid shimmer body spray! And don’t worry. This color won’t translate onto your skin.

Tip: If you’d also like to include glitter in your mermaid shimmer body spray, you can add glitter as well. However, you’ll need a very fine glitter that is .004″ in size so it doesn’t clog the sprayer.

Screw on the sprayer then label your bottle as desired for personal use or gifting. (I made a sticker for mine by printing mermaid cat clipart from LePetite Market onto sticker paper.)

If you’d rather make my mermaid shimmer body spray recipe to sell, you’ll need to follow FDA guidelines for labeling your product. If you’re unsure about the rules and regulations regarding labeling cosmetics, I highly recommend the book, Soap and Cosmetic Labeling: How to Follow the Rules and Regs Explained in Plain English, by Marie Gale.

To use, simply shake the bottle to remix the ingredients (the mica will settle) then spray onto skin and massage in.

DIY Unicorn Balm Recipe

Ingredients:

1.5 oz. sweet almond oil
1 oz. fractionated coconut oil
1 oz. emulsifying wax
1 oz. sal butter
.15 oz. skin safe fragrance oil of choice
1 teaspoon arrowroot powder
1/4 teaspoon each of three mica colors of choice
3/8th of a teaspoon flashing pearl, shimmer pearl or silvery white pearl mica

Instructions:

You will need a digital scale for this project. A regular kitchen or postal scale will work for this particular project, however I specifically use a Baker’s Math Scale. (I recommend this scale if you are making soap or plan on doing a lot of bath and body projects in the future.)

Begin by weighing out the sal butter and emulsifying wax. Combine in a large glass Pyrex measuring cup, then melt in the microwave at 50% power. (Alternately you may also use a double boiler.)

If you don’t have sal butter or prefer to use another butter, you can also use refined shea butter or mango butter in place of the sal butter. (Sal butter is a great substitute for shea butter for anyone who is sensitive to shea butter or has a latex allergy. Sal butter is a superb moisturizer and is believed to help with various skin disorders such as acne, eczema and psoriasis. It can also help to reduce skin inflammation. In addition, its chemical composition makes it especially suited for hard lotions.)

Using a measuring spoon, measure out one level teaspoon of arrowroot powder. Stir or whisk into the melted sal butter and emulsifying wax until the arrowroot powder has dissolved and there are no clumps.

Next, weigh out the sweet almond oil and fractionated coconut oil. Stir or whisk into your DIY unicorn balm mixture.

You can substitute the sweet almond oil with another carrier oil if desired such as grapeseed oil. Just be sure it is liquid at room temperature. If you are substituting the fractionated coconut oil, choose another liquid at room temperature dry oil for best results. Other dry oils I like are rosehip seed oil and hemp seed oil.

If you using a fragrance oil, weigh out and stir in the fragrance. (You can also use an essential oil or essential oil blend of your choice. In this case, use .05 oz. of essential oil.)

Now divide the DIY unicorn balm base into three containers.

Using a measuring spoon, add 1/4 teaspoon of your first mica color to one container of the unicorn balm. Stir well to combine. Repeat with a 1/4 teaspoon of the next mica color in the second container, and then add 1/4 teaspoon of your third mica color to the last and final container, mixing after each addition. (Please note you do not want to use lake dyes for this project.)

Now add 1/8 teaspoon of your flashing pearl, shimmer pearl or silvery white pearl mica to each of the three colors. This will give skin a very subtle shimmer. For more obvious shimmer, increase the amount used to suit. Stir each container well to ensure all of the mica is thoroughly combined in each container.

Once the individually colored DIY unicorn balms start to solidify from a liquid state, stir again. Then scoop one of the colors into your container(s) so it fills 1/3rd of the container(s) you are using.

Repeat with the rest of the colors until your container(s) are filled.

Now use a mini spatula or the flat side of a knife or a spoon to swirl the top layer of the DIY unicorn balm. Finally, dust the top of your unicorn balm with the Diamond Dust, white or pearl mica.  Allow the unicorn balm to completely set up, then gently smooth the tops with the back of a spoon. Screw on the lids to your containers. Your completed DIY unicorn balm will have the consistency of a cream or thick lotion.

You’ve now made your own DIY unicorn balm! Yay! For this project I used a 100 mL wide-mouth cosmetic style screw top jar from Infinity Jars. These jars are really cool, not only because of the awesome color – they are made from a deep violet glass that looks black – they also offer an airtight seal, filter out UV light and are scent proof. I had enough of the unicorn balm left over to also fill three 10 gram/mL lip balm pots.

New Year's Beauty DIY - Gala Shimmer Stick Recipe

Celebrate the New Year with lots of sparkle and shine by crafting your own DIY Gala Shimmer Sticks! These sparkling beauty sticks can be applied to your face, lips and body for a shimmering effect wherever you want! Keep them simple or “dress” them up with fragrance and even a hint of color!

Handmade DIY New Year Gala Shimmer Sticks

This beauty recipe was created using the DIY Shimmer Stick Kit from Wholesale Supplies Plus with a few additional fun ingredients. As I chose to add fragrance – and even color! – to mine, you’ll need a few additional ingredients in addition to the kit if you also wish to add a scent and/or color. I also created cute labels that you can print for your own shimmer sticks.

DIY Tinted Pink Champagne New Year's Gala Shimmer Stick

Pink Champagne New Year Gala Shimmer Stick Recipe

Adapted from the Shimmer Stick Recipe at Wholesale Supplies Plus

Ingredients:

2 oz. Refined Shea Butter
2 oz. Smooth & Creamy Lotion Bar Additive
2 ml Pink Champagne Fragrance Oil
2 Tablespoons Iridescent Super Sparkle Glitter
Red Orange Oil Locking Mica Shimmer (to suit, optional)

Instructions:

In a double boiler melt the smooth and creamy lotion bar additive, then add the shea butter and continue to heat until all ingredients are fully melted. If you don’t have a double boiler, you can use a microwave. Simply melt the lotion bar additive in a glass Pyrex measuring cup at reduced power until it has melted about half way, then add the shea butter and continue heating at reduced power until fully melted. Carefully remove from heat source.

Using a plastic transfer pipette, measure out 2 ml of the fragrance oil and stir into the shimmer stick base. Then measure out the glitter and stir in as well. Allow to sit for several minutes, then stir again to thoroughly incorporate glitter, then pour evenly into four 1 oz. clear push up sticks.

To tint your shimmer sticks pink that won’t leave color behind, add 1/2 teaspoon to base and mix well before pouring. For a lightly tinted shimmer stick that gives just a hint of color to lips and cheeks, add 2 teaspoons. For richer lipstick like color use four teaspoons of red orange oil locking mica shimmer. (Note that if you plan to use shimmer sticks on lips, only use lip safe flavor fragrances.)

Allow product to cool at room temp as sharp temperature changes will cause the product to sink and crack in the middle.

DIY New Year's Gala Shimmer Sticks with Printable Labels

Once your shimmer sticks have cooled, screw on the lids and add your labels! For this project I decorated my shimmer stick containers with my Printable Gala Shimmer Stick Sticker Labels {download labels here} as well as Pink Cherry Blossom Snowflake and Peach & Gold Corner Japanese Washi Tapes from Cute Tape.
