Darn Those Wacky Hormones

When I was a teenager I always assumed that I would grow out of my acne. Sadly, that was not the case. I had terrible acne flare ups throughout my thirties. Some of which were hormonal. Others were due to stress. I figured that in my forties I could finally kiss acne goodbye. Well, no one told me about perimenopause.

It’s like my entire life since I turned twelve has been plagued by hormone changes. And now I’m stuck with yet another bout of insane hormone surges. Surges that not only cause worsening acne, but also ridiculous mood swings, fatigue, hot flashes, worsened premenstrual syndrome and tender ta ta’s.

Lucky for me perimenopause only lasts an average of four to ten years. (Please insert sarcasm here.) After that, without some type of hormone therapy, it’s completely plausible that I’ll be able to grow a beard. But hey, at least they have contests for that!

(Incidentally, if you are also struggling with perimenopause, I’ve found several natural supplements that work for me. Ashwagandha root, a B-complex with ginseng and evening primrose are great for increasing energy, preventing hot flashes and improving stress response.)

For the most part I’m able to prevent most of my acne with the right skin care products – with one hold out. My chin seems to be completely immune to nearly everything I’ve tried. And with summer here, I feel like I constantly have a volcano erupting somewhere on my face. Especially since I sweat like a teenage boy.

How to Get Rid of Your Farmer’s Tan (Using Sunless Tanner)

I may receive compensation from links on this site. See my disclosure policy.

I promise this isn’t some spammy magazine article. It just sort of looks like one. But seriously. This really is what happened when I used sunless tanner on my boyfriend to cover up his farmer’s tan.

Do you have a farmer's tan? Then you must read this article on how to hide your farmer's tan. Learn how I tackled my boyfriend's farmer's tan using a sunless tanner - and what the results were like a week later. Plus tips for using sunless tanners and natural ways to give your skin that summer kiss of bronze without using a sunless tanning product with DHA.

Sunless tanners sort of terrify me. The last time I used a sunless tanner was toward the end of the 80’s. I distinctly remember being very very orange by the end. And of course the tops of my toes and my knees and elbows were uncomfortably darker than the rest of my body. For these reasons I have avoided sunless tanners like the plague ever since.

Last month I received a deluxe sample of St. Tropez Self Tan Purity Bronzing Water Mousse in my allure beauty box. Basically a sunless tanner in a pump bottle. Much thinner than a hair mousse, this sunless tanner goes on clear. The formula is supposed to allow you to be able to dress immediately after application. However I found that this product was still slightly tacky to the touch for about a half hour after applying.

Reviews for the St. Tropez Self Tan Purity Bronzing Water Mousse agree that this sunless tanner gives you a natural looking tan. Nothing too dark. Just more of a subtle glow. While subsequent applications build color for darker looking skin.

Still, as a Gen-exer who’s survived big hair, orange skin and what is probably the worst fashion decade ever – I was still hesitant to give this sunless tanner a try. So I turned my boyfriend (who is incredibly WONDERFUL btw) into a guinea pig.

My boyfriend often works outside for this job. As a result, he’s developed quite the wicked farmer’s tan. If you’ve ever had a serious farmer’s tan, then you know there’s not coming back from it. At least not until the middle of winter with three feet of snow on the ground.

So, as Greg (the BF) has zero plans for going shirtless this summer, I decided to try out this sunless tanner on this chest. That way, if this sunless tanner turned his skin orange AF, he and I were going to be the only two people to see it.

This Is What Happened When I Used Sunless Tanner - On My Boyfriend! I promise this isn't some spammy magazine article. It just sort of looks like one. But seriously. This really is what happened when I used sunless tanner on my boyfriend.

Here is the before photo. Greg was adamant that I hid his face. Not because he’s self conscious, but because he’s a ghost on social media. He’s the kind of guy who enjoys private moments, well – privately. (I know. He’s already wondering WTF he’s gotten himself into.) Therefore, in this photo he has a frowny face. After all, his chest is white AF compared to his face, neck and arms.

My Review of St. Tropez Self Tan Purity Bronzing Water Mousse

After the first application Greg no longer glowed in the dark. However, there also wasn’t really a drastic change. Nothing was orange though, which was awesome. So the next day we decided to try it again.

By the third application, Greg’s fake tan darkened considerably. And it definitely looked more natural than I had imagined it would. (Thus the super happy face!)

And a side by side comparison. The lighting is unfortunately different. Not because I lacked the foresight to take photos at the same time each day, but because it’s been like Seattle in Southwestern Virginia lately. The rain just never stops. (Also I lacked the foresight to take photos at the same time each day.)

The results of this sunless tanner were pretty impressive at tackling Greg’s farmer’s tan. Especially when you compare them to what I had to work with over twenty years ago. You do, however, have to be really careful about applying it. Because you can’t see this tanner once you put it on, you won’t know if you botched your application until after the fact.

This Is What Happened When I Used Sunless Tanner - On My Boyfriend! I promise this isn't some spammy magazine article. It just sort of looks like one. But seriously. This really is what happened when I used sunless tanner on my boyfriend.

Here’s a photo where I had grabbed Greg’s arm, after the product had dried, but before I’d had a chance to wash my hands. (Oh no!)

We also found that the color started to lighten within a few days. By the end of the week, Greg’s chest looked nothing like the after photo. And the sunless tanner became uneven as it faded. The parts of Greg’s chest that had hair stayed darker than the other parts of his chest. So it almost looked like he had rolled around in dirt.

All in all, though, I think that the St. Tropez Self Tan Purity Bronzing Water Mousse is a decent product. While it’s not something I would probably ever use, it is perfect for hiding a farmer’s tan. I think this product would be great summer events or weddings that require something like a strapless dress.

Organic sugar scrub. This moisturizing body polish contains a luxurious combination of sunflower oil, shea butter and authentic monoi de tahiti oil blended together into a nourishing emulsion that resurfaces dry skin. Formulated using organic sugar, this natural body scrub gently removes dead skin and impurities. It also helps skin to attract & retain moisture, while revealing a smooth, dewy glow.

Tips for Using A Sunless Tanner

1. Exfoliate.

If you’re planning to use a sunless tanner this summer, then you’ll want to be sure to exfoliate first. This helps to ensure an even looking tan. Otherwise self tanning products tend to look blotchy and will fade unevenly. You can easily make your own custom body scrubs. Or you may like this organic sugar scrub (pictured above) from BK Apothecary.

Formulated using organic sugar, this natural body scrub gently removes dead skin and impurities. It also helps skin to attract and retain moisture, while revealing a smooth, dewy glow. (Buy it here.)

2. Moisturize.

After exfoliating your skin in the shower, be sure to apply a moisturizer. You’ll want to apply an oil free, fragrance free moisturizer on your hands as well as on the backs of your heels and on knees and elbows. The skin on these parts of your body tend to be drier than the rest of your skin.

Because dry areas of skin tend to absorb more pigment, applying a moisturizer beforehand will help your sunless tanner look natural and even. When applying a sunless tanning product, you’ll also want to skip these areas every other application for a more natural look.

Natural Self Tanning Lotion. If you find that sunless tanners dry out your skin, opt for a natural self tanning product. Essenu's Steal A Tan™ Dark Indoor Sunless Tanning Lotion not only contains natural tanning boosters, it also contains naturally moisturizing shea and cocoa butters as well as aloe vera and green tea. It's also formulated with marine elastin and caffeine extract to help to tighten and tone your skin for a smooth, beautiful tan.

3. Apply in a cool, dry location.

Additionally, always apply your sunless tanner in a cool, dry area. You definitely don’t want to be a perspiring mess when using a self tanning product. Dead skin cells along with sweat, dirt and oil can cause streaking. This is because dirt and sweat form a barrier between your skin and your sunless tanner preventing an even application. So steer clear of that steamy bathroom and opt for an A/C vent instead.

4. Dust on powder where you tend to sweat.

You may also want to dust the insides of your elbows, armpits, the backs of your knees and, um, under your boobs (Hello?! AMIRITE?) with arrowroot powder once your sunless tanner dries. A talc free alternative to baby powder, arrowroot powder helps to prevent creasing or sweating while the product develops. And, of course, once you’ve done the deed, be sure to wait at least four hours before getting wet to avoid streaking or partially washing off the product.

Are DHA Sunless Tanners Safe?

Though FDA has approved DHA, a “natural” sunless tanning agent as safe for cosmetic use, there is some controversy surrounding this ingredient.

DHA, or dihydroxyacetone, is a chemical derived from beet or cane sugar. Restricted to topical use only, “DHA works by reacting to the amino acids present in the top layer of the skin, the dead cells of the stratum corneum, to create a browning effect.” (Source.) It’s generally believed that DHA is safe to use as a tanning agent as long as you avoid inhaling the product. You should also avoid applying your self tanning product to mucous membranes.

If inhaled, or applied to unapproved areas of the body, DHA has the potential to cause asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or cancer. For this reason, spray tans containing DHA are not recommended. Additionally, even with the topical application of a DHA tanning product, there is a risk of an allergic reaction that can lead to itching or even hives.

Natural Coffee Sunless Tanner. Holly + Nectar sells a Summer Daze Sunless Tanner that's DHA free. This natural coffee sunless tanner is all natural, vegan, and super moisturizing. Free of harsh chemicals, this natural streak free sunless tanner instead uses a blend of nutrient rich oils and coffee that revitalize skin, add moisture, and give your skin a healthy looking tan.

DHA Free “Tanning” Alternatives

There are other options if you’d like a sunless tanning product that offers a golden glow without DHA. Holly + Nectar sells a Summer Daze Sunless Tanner (pictured above) that’s DHA free. As if that wasn’t enough, the bonus is the scent! There’s none of the chemical smell that comes with self tanning products that contain DHA. Instead, this natural hazelnut sunless tanner smells like hazelnut and espresso. And, it won’t clog pores! (Buy it here.)

There are a number of ways to boost your immune system naturally before you get sick. With a deadly flu going around, not to mention all the other illnesses we’re more likely to acquire when our body is worn down, you really don’t want to take chances.

How to Boost Your Immune System Naturally! Boosting your body's immunity does more than just help deter illnesses. It can also help your body respond better to stress as well as lead to a more restful night's sleep. And as a busy mom or a career driven rockstar, those are both things we can all use. #healthcare #healthandwellness #healthyliving #wellness #health #herbs #herbalsupplements #naturalremedies #homeremedies #lifestyle

Boosting your body’s immunity however does more than just help deter illnesses. It can also help your body respond better to stress as well as lead to a more restful night’s sleep. And as a busy mom or a career driven rockstar, those are both things we can all use. I know I can.

So whether the kids are bringing home germs from school, your coworkers are passing a bug around the office or you’re simply feeling puny, here are five easy ways you can boost your immune system naturally for overall wellness.

How to Boost Your Immune System Naturally (5 Products to Buy Right Now!)

How to Boost Your Immune System Naturally! Boosting your body's immunity does more than just help deter illnesses. It can also help your body respond better to stress as well as lead to a more restful night's sleep. And as a busy mom or a career driven rockstar, those are both things we can all use.

1. Mushrooms, Turmeric + Astragalus

I have two herbal supplements that I take daily to help boost my immunity. The first is Gaia Herbs Mushroom + Herbs Everyday Immune which contains a potent combination of mushrooms (Maitake, Reishi, Chaga, and Cordyceps) and herbs like turmeric and astragalus that have been seen to work at the cellular level.

About Chaga Mushrooms

The Chaga mushroom is commonly found on Birch trees throughout the colder climates of the Northern hemisphere. Historically consumed for centuries in the East as a tea, this powerful antioxidant rich mushroom is rich in Beta-D-Glucans which help to balance the body’s immune system response. Additionally, Chaga is also used to supports the body’s response to modern cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy, by compensating for the negative side effects.

In addition, it’s also believe that Chaga can soothe pain associated with neuropathy and diabetes. As such this herbal supplement has been a key component in my overall health as someone who has struggled with fibromyalgia.

Other health benefits include its support for healthy blood pressure and cholesterol – Chaga is able to break down LDL cholesterol or bad cholesterol in the bloodstream – as well as offering support for gastrointestinal issues such as ulcers.

About Turmeric

Turmeric, a powerful antioxidant with anti-inflammatory properties, contains curcumin which is also believed to have anticancer properties. There have been over 2000 studies and a phase 1 cancer trial in the UK that have shown curcumin can help to prevent several forms of cancer including breast, lung, stomach, liver, and colon cancer.

About Astragalus

Astragalus, a perennial flowering plant traditionally used in Chinese medicine as an adaptogen, also aids in fighting off stress and disease. Continuing research suggests that astragalus boosts immunity, acts as an anti-inflammatory, aids in the proper regulation of insulation and related illnesses, can slow tumor growth and protects the cardiovascular system.

It can also help your body respond better to stress as well as lead to a more restful night's sleep. And as a busy mom or a career driven rockstar, those are both things we can all use.

2. Ashwagandha Root

The other herbal supplement that I take daily is Gaia Herbs Ashwagandha Root. Ashwagandha root, like astragalus, is another adaptogenic herb. It helps to nourish and restore optimal nervous and immune system health by normalizing mood, energy levels, and overall immune function.

For me, ashwagandha root helps immensely with my physical response to anxiety. Additionally, in Ayurvedic medicine, ashwagandha is used for its “grounding” properties for those with a high Vata as it aids in calming the mind and promoting restful sleep.

Further, this highly nutritional herb assists in maintaining proper body nourishment while also supporting proper function of the adrenals. Ashwagandha is especially beneficial to seniors in need of a nourishing, natural source of energy.

3. Probiotics

Probiotics are another easy, natural way to boost your immune system naturally. A must for a healthy gut, probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts that aid a healthy digestive system.

Studies show that probiotics can help with issues such as irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease and both infectious and antibiotic related diarrhea. While others have also experienced relief from skin conditions such as eczema.

Additional benefits include improved oral, vaginal and urinary health. And of course, for many people, probiotics also aid in the prevention of allergies and colds.

How to Boost Your Immune System Naturally! Five proven ways to naturally boost your immunity and help your body's response to stress in addition to aiding in more restful sleep.

Because I need a healthy multi-vitamin I can trust in addition to probiotics, I take Garden of Life’s Vitamin Code Women’s Multivitamin. This product contains a blend of a raw organic fruits & vegetables, a raw probiotic & enzyme blend and a raw antioxidant & immune support complex. Additional ingredients include vitamins that support breast health, a woman’s reproductive system and bone strength.

Why drink apple cider vinegar during cold & flu season? Drinking raw apple cider vinegar everyday is a great way to keep your immunity up. Not only can it help to prevent you from getting sick, but it also gives your body a boost to fight a cold or the flu if you do get sick. I have a great recipe for a turmeric ginger apple cider vinegar tonic here. If you already have a cold, adding a dash of cayenne pepper to suit can give this tonic an extra kick to help clear out stuffy nasal passages.

4. Apple Cider Vinegar

Drinking raw apple cider vinegar daily, either as a shot or as part of a tonic, is another great way to boost your immune system naturally. You know the saying “an apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Well, because raw apple cider isn’t pasteurized and still contains the “mother” it maintains many of the same nutritional benefits as the unfermented fruit. When apples are then fermented to produce apple cider vinegar, it produces a number of beneficial enzymes including natural probiotics that boost your overall wellness and immunity.

Additionally, raw apple cider is also rich in malic acid. Malic acid is naturally anti-viral and therefore it can help to prevent colds caused by viruses as well as hasten your recovery should you get sick.

Apple cider vinegar further aids in digestion, can help you to maintain a healthy weight, assists in regulating blood sugar and can even lower blood pressure. All of these things promote good health and can make your body more able to fend off illnesses.

I am a huge fan of Bragg’s Apple Cider Vinegar. Not only has this brand been around for a really long time, but you can also find it easily at most grocery and health food stores as well as online. Further, there is also a holistic book published by Melissa Bragg called Apple Cider Vinegar: Miracle Health System that help you get the most out of this superfood.

5. Essential Oils

Aromatherapeutic use of essential oils are another way to boost your immune system naturally. In addition to managing stress, getting sufficient rest and maintaining proper nutrition, essential oils can also help to protect your body from germs.

Not only can you use essential oils to ease stress and calm your mind through aromatherapy, but certain essential oils also have strong antiviral and antibiotic properties. When using these essential oils with a diffuser, they can help to combat the airborne spread of germs. Some of these essential oils include clove, eucalyptus, frankincense, lemon, oregano and peppermint.

I also especially like Spark Naturals Shield essential oil blend for this purpose. This natural essential oil blend is created from a combination of blend of clove, cinnamon bark, lemon, eucalyptus, and rosemary essential oils. Inspired by grave robbers during the plague in 15th century England, this blend was historically believed to protect them from illness when robbing dead plague victims.

Make elderberry syrup this cold & flu season to help naturally boost your immunity! Black elderberries have been used for hundreds of years for their medicinal value in treating colds, the flu, allergies and to boost overall respiratory health. Found along rivers, forests and even roadsides, this common botanical yields ripe berries that are rich in antioxidants, potassium, beta carotene, calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin C. Elderberry syrup is a simple and tasty way to ingest the nutrients offered by elderberries. It’s believed that taken daily, it can help to prevent flu and colds as well as aid in the recovery of an existing illness such as the flu, colds, excessive mucus and even a sore throat. You can learn how to make your own homemade elderberry syrup here.

In addition to these five ways to boost your immune system naturally, I also have a collection of natural ways to fight colds and flu. You can find that information here. You may also be interested in my Natural Home Remedies + Herbal Health Care Pinterest board.

Making Your Own Whipped Sugar Scrubs

Now that you’ve tried – and fallen head over heels for – the awesomeness that is the whipped sugar scrub, why not try your hand at making your own?

I’ve found that a lot of the simple recipes that whipped sugar scrubs call for include coconut oil. It’s important to note, that while coconut oil does have some amazing skin care properties, it also rates pretty high on the comedogenic chart. What this means is that it’s likely to clog pores in most people which in turn can lead to acne.

Additionally, I find that straight up coconut oil irritates my dry skin. If this has been your experience as well, you can easily substitute the coconut oil in any of these whipped sugar scrub recipes with babassu oil.

While coconut oil rates a 4 on the comedogenic chart, babassu oil is a low-comedogenic oil with a rating of only 2 – meaning it won’t clog pores for most people. It also works as a mild moisturizer that calms and soothes all skin types, whether you’re acne prone or suffer from skin conditions like eczema or dry skin.

What are the Other Skin Care Benefits Babassu Oil?

Babassu oil has many of the same properties to regular coconut oil. Like coconut oil, babassu oil is semi-solid at room temperature with a melting point around body temperature – slightly higher than coconut oils own 76°F melt point. A great substitute for those with coconut allergies, this mild moisturizer also won’t leave skin feeling oily or greasy and it works great in hair too.

In addition babassu oil contains a high amount of skin beneficial fatty acids including lauric, stearic, myristic, palmitic and oleic acid. It’s also rich in vitamin E, a natural antioxidant, and has anti-inflammatory properties. It’s a wonderful choice for an itchy scalp or dry skin and hair. (Learn more about using babassu oil for hair care here.)

You can learn more about common carrier oils and where they rank on the comedogenic chart at the Holistic Health Herbalist here. Also be sure to check out my other skin care recipes that contain babassu oil here.
