Creative Ways to Package Soap

Just because the homemade soaps you sell need to include the weight and ingredient list doesn’t mean you’re stuck using a traditional soap label. If you’re looking for creative ways to package your cold process soap bars, then try thinking outside the box. (Learn how to legally label your soaps for sale.)

Easy Ways to Package Soap Using Scrapbook Supplies

I used scrapbook supplies and bakers twine to decorate these homemade soap bars. Simply print out your ingredient list and other information onto squares of cardstock. Then use bakers twine or a decorative ribbon to attach the ingredient list to the bottom or back of your soap bars. Simply slip the ingredient list under the bakers twine to safely secure it to your soap.

How to Package Round Soap

One of my favorite ways to package round soap is by using washi tape. You can do this one of two ways. You can either tightly wrap your soap in foodservice film, then wrap a piece of washi tape around the diameter of the bar. Or, you can cut brown paper to fit the diameter of your soap. Then wrap the paper around the diameter. Tape the paper closed. Then add decorative washi tape over the brown paper (as pictured above.)

If you’re looking for ways to package your soaps to sell you can also put your label around the diameter of your soap in lieu of the washi tape. Or try one of the following ways to package round soap. I love how attractive the soap label is on these ways to package soap from Etsy sellers.

DIY Ideas for Homemade Soap Labels

DIY Ideas for Homemade Soap LabelsOne of the most difficult things for me about soapmaking isn’t coming up with new recipes or ideas, it’s coming up with a design for the actual labels that go on the resulting soaps. So I thought I’d share just a few ideas for inspiration to help you with your own homemade soap labels whether you’re crafting handmade soaps to sell or to give as handmade gifts.

I created the side wrap labels for my handmade activated charcoal facial soap (pictured above) in Open Office, which is a free open source program similar to Word. First, I measured out my soap bar to figure out what size my labels needed to be then created two columns with these size guidelines in Open Office. (Don’t forget to create padding between the two columns to compensate for the width of your soap.) In the left column I typed out the ingredient list, weight and company information. I then copied and pasted this information down the entire left side of the column. Then, in the right hand column I typed in the soap name using a decorative font.

Then I placed a frame in center of the name and left it blank so I could adhere a “Handmade with Love” sticker inside the empty frame once printed. I purchased these particular stickers from Cute Tape, however you can create your own Kraft stickers and labels with Kraft sticker paper from World Label. Alternately, you could also insert a picture or drawing here in lieu of a frame.

Also, if you are creating frame around the label with an existing frame or picture, you will need to wrap the frame in the background and then arrange it by sending it to the back. Once I had my design in place for the front side of the label, I then copied and pasted the soap name and frame down the entire right side of the column so that it lined up with the ingredient list on the left. I then printed them onto a full page white sticker sheet.

Too much of a challenge? You can download the soap labels like the ones pictured above here, then use a PDF converter to edit the text with your own information.

Printable Mountain Range Soap LabelUsing the same basic concept I also created this Mountain Man Detox Soap Label using my own drawing I scanned into the computer in place of the frame.

Creating Custom Soap Labels

Like the previous soap label, the ingredients, weight and business info wrap around onto the back of the soap so just the soap name and image appear on the front. Alternately, you could also place the company name on the front above the picture with the type of soap below the picture. You can use a black and white image and either leave it black and white or color it in with markers by hand for a more homemade look. Or you can simply use a color image and print the labels out in color. You can download my Mountain Range Soap Labels in black and white here. Or download in color here. You will have to use a PDF converter to edit and customize the labels.

Ideas for Wrapping and Labeling Homemade Soaps - Cigar Band Soap Label

Another simple way to label your soaps is with a cigar band label. These labels can be wide or thin. And as the only labeling requirement for true soap (created from primarily fats and an alkali) is the weight, you can make these a minimalist as you like. Rather than make a perfectly straight rectangle shaped cigar label for my Handmade Summer Festival Soap, I included some clip art I purchased for this soap label to give it some shape and dress it up a bit.

Handmade Soap Packaging Idea - Homemade Soap Wrapped in Kraft Paper with a Sticker Cigar Band Soap LabelYou can use images in any number of ways on these cigar band labels. However, the smaller your label, the small and simpler the image for your soap label should be. Here, I wrapped the soap first in Kraft paper and then applied a cigar band soap label that was printed onto sticker paper.

Handmade Cork Wrapped Soaps from Bodhi Basics - Homemade Soap Labeling and Packaging IdeaFor more ideas, I suggest window shopping! There are so many amazing handmade soap artisans online, that’s it’s easy to browse products from other companies to help inspire your next soap label or packaging design! For example, Bodhi Basics (pictured above) wraps her lovely natural, organic soaps with paper cigar band labels printed on Kraft paper with a piece of cork tucked inside.

Black Licorice Halloween Soap from Daily ReposeWhile Daily Repose dresses up her simple Kraft paper labels from her handmade soap line with a lacy paper doily edge and ribbon. I also love how she decorated her seasonal soaps for Halloween with little accents like the skull featured on this black licorice scented soap (above.)

Sandalwood and Vanilla Scented Soap from Sunshine GardenSunshine Garden wraps her soaps in what appears to be waxed paper or parchment. Then wraps with a cigar band label made from decorative papers. A round sticker label with her company name, fragrance and weight.

What are some of your favorite ways to wrap your own homemade soaps whether to sell or to gift?

Retaining Your Customer Base for Your Handmade Business Via Email Marketing

Business Marketing - Retaining Your Customer Base for Your Handmade Business Through Email MarketingSelling and marketing your handmade products online has evolved a lot over the years. I think back to when Etsy was in beta and the first and only handmade marketplace of its kind and I’m just in awe of the both the technological advancements in computers and digital media as well how social networking has evolved. However, one thing has stayed the same whether your company is big or small – the email newsletter. Online shops to social networks all utilize email marketing and there’s a good reason why. It allows them to reconnect with consumers they know are already interested in their products, remind them they are still there and even offer them a little incentive to come back. Every time I’ve sent out my own monthly business email newsletter, it has resulted in sales. (I always include a coupon code so I can track the sales it brings in. And this is definitely the answer to “How do I let people know about my sale?”) But your business newsletter can do more than just bring in cash flow during slow or stagnant sales periods, it also has the ability to tell you exactly what type of content your consumer base is interested in!

For my email list I use Your Mailing List Provider, or YMLP for short. They offer a ton of great features to help you get the most out of your email list with everything from a built in editor and email templates to unlimited image hosting and embedded images as well as google analytics integration, newsletter archives and more. Some of my favorite features however are the groups and the email reporting.

YMLP allows you to create different sign up forms, each of which can contain their own custom fields as well as the option to assign that specific form to a specific group you create. This allows you to track where people are signing up for your newsletter as well as send out targeted newsletters to different groups of people. For example, the newsletter sign up form I have on Rebecca’s Soap Delicatessen differs from the one on my blog, Soap Deli News. My main website registrations all go to my default group while the blog registrations go to a separate group I simply named “Blog Sign Ups” for my reference. You can also create different forms to track registrations you have via giveaways for example. You can then send out a different, customized email newsletter for each group or you can send the same newsletter out to everyone in all of the groups. Because hey, you might want to send your customers a coupon code, but give your subscribers who signed up through your blog notification of a new giveaway. Pretty neat, right? Well, there’s more of course. My favorite of which is the reporting for sent messages.

Email Newsletter Reporting - Opens and Clicks Over Time

For each newsletter you send out you can track opens and clicks over time. This report will tell you how many newsletter recipients received your email, how many actually opened the email and even how many people clicked on links within the email. It will also tell you how many people unsubscribed or better yet, forwarded that particular email on to someone they knew! You can track this progress through the first day, the first two days, a week or even by the hour.

Email Newsletter Opens By Location

If you are trying to reach a specific country or state or you want to  find out what locations you need to focus on to improve your reach, you can also track the opens by location. For the United States and Canada you can double click on those locations on the map to whittle down your stats to opens by state. (They seem to really like me out in California!)

Email Programs Used to Open Your Newsletter

If you want to know what types of devices or services are being used to open your emails, then check out the reporting for Email Programs Usage. It will tell you if people are reading on the go via their iPhone or accessing your email newsletter through a webmail, like Gmail or Hotmail, for example.

Email Newsletter Reporting - Email Click Map That Shows Click Throughs On Specific Links

My absolute favorite report, however, is the E-mail Click Map. For each link included within the body of your email, you are given a breakdown of which links were clicked and what percentage of people who opened the email clicked on each particular link. Hovering over the percentage bar indicator will tell you how many how many clicks were made through that particular link out of all the click throughs made within the email. This will help to tell you what content your newsletter subscribers are most interested in and want to see more of without you having to survey your subscribers. All that’s left for you to do is come up some creative new content to encourage your readers to open your newsletters and visit your links!

To find out more about all of the fabulous features YMLP has to offer or to sign up for a free 30 day trial, simply visit YMLP here. You can also take advantage of their free plan for up to 1,000 subscribers.

Mineral makeup trends. Creating your own personal color style.

Mineral makeup has become the new alternative to traditional store bought cosmetics. Not only are major cosmetic companies jumping on the bandwagon, but small businesses are forming everyday creating their own handmade versions of eye shadows, foundations, and lip colors as a natural alternative to chemical laden cosmetic brands.

rainbow eyes, originally uploaded by Erinna.

With a little practice and some basic ingredients you too can create your own custom color eye shadows. Point of Interest Blog provides multiple tutorials on how to make your own mineral makeup. From explaining the basic ingredients that go into the recipe to creating that first eye shadow, Point of Interest gives you recipes and tips for creating eye shadows in a variety of basic colors along with a run down of the basic cost of supplies to get started. There are also recipes for making foundations, lip colors and more. To get started on making your own eye shadows, visit this page. Links to the follow up tutorials are listed in the comment section. You can view all of the tutorials by clicking here. Click on older posts to continue viewing all articles. There are approximately 72 in all.

Aside of the mineral makeup basics, there are also things like primers and sealants to help your makeup look it’s best and stay put throughout the day. You can experiment with creating these type of products as well or you can purchase them from other companies who specialize in handcrafted mineral makeup. The All Natural Face makes a Vegan Eye Shadow Primer that is applied to your lid before applying your shadow and eye liner. Not only does it help your shadow to stay put but it also gives you more freedom to blend your shadows and build up a nice bold color. Their Seal It Eye Shadow/Eye Liner Sealant is a natural alternative to keeping your eye shadow and liner smudge proof and in place all day while giving your shadows a foiled, wet look. Both products are excellent. My favorite eye shadow shade from The All Natural Face is Lemon Ice. It’s lovely as a highlight color on my brow bone with a pretty shade of pink on my lids.

Do you currently use mineral makeup? What is your favorite brand(s) and color(s)?
