What you’ll need:

10 oz. of natural soy wax
1 oz. candle fragrance oil
two 8 oz. deep round tins with lids
2 large wooden wicks with bases
candy thermometer
printable candle safety & blank labels {download pdf file}
printable diy soy candle instruction sheet {download pdf file}
full size blank white sticker sheet(s)
three 5″ x 7″ clear poly zipper bags or equivalent
box to put it all in

What you do:

Using a digital kitchen scale weigh out 10 oz. of natural soy wax. Split the wax in half and put 5 oz. in one zipper bag and 5 oz. in another. If you like you can draw labels for the bags of wax onto blank sticker paper and adhere to each bag.

Next, if desired label the candle fragrance oil with a hand drawn label as well. I used a Jammin’ Rock Candy fragrance oil for my kit. It’s a really great scent for kids and I specifically chose this one for my niece. However, you can use any age appropriate fragrance – Snickerdoodle Latte maybe? – or your recipients favorite scent. I’m personally in love with Moonlight Pomegranate.

Print out the sticker candle safety labels and blank round labels for decorating the lid of the tin onto a full page sticker sheet.

Now print out the diy soy candlemaking kit instruction sheet onto a regular piece of paper.

Cut the sticker labels down to fit inside a third zipper poly bag. Place the stickers in the bag along with the two wooden wicks and bases.

DIY Soy & Beeswax Candles

DIY Soy and Beeswax Candles - Easy Homemade Gift Idea

I’ve been playing around a lot with candles lately. I’ve made numerous hand poured candles with soy wax as well as beeswax, so I figured why not combine the two? I love how simple and easy the soy wax candles are to make – especially since I’ve hear paraffin can be a nightmare – as well as the long burn time of all beeswax candles.

However, because the beeswax is such a hard wax – soy wax melts at 102 degrees F which incidentally makes them perfect for making homemade massage candles and wax melts – while beeswax melts at a much higher temperature of 144 – 147 degrees F, my beeswax candles would burn down with a hole in the center. So I combined the two waxes and used a larger wick to get the perfect, long last candle that burns much more evenly.

How to Make Soy and Beeswax Candles

As these candles cool much more slowly than straight up beeswax candles, you’ll want to pour these right when they start to look a bit slushy. That way they won’t crack on the top as they cool. If you have trouble and your candle does crack, no worries. It’s only an aesthetic issue and the candle will still burn beautifully. Following is my favorite recipe for a holiday pumpkin scented candle although you can use any candle fragrance you like. It will yield one 6 oz. candle though feel free to double it for multiple candles. You’ll use a little more wax by weight than the tin size as the beeswax is heavier than soy.

Handmade Holiday Pumpkin Soy & Beeswax Candles

Ingredients:

3.5 oz. white beeswax pastilles
3.5 oz. natural 100% soy wax
.35 oz. Pumpkin Pie Spice fragrance oil
.35 Crafter’s Choice Perfect Pumpkin fragrance oil

Supplies:

digital kitchen scale
glass Pyrex measuring cup
butter knife or stirring utensil
one 6 oz. deep round tin with lid
one large wooden wick
microwave or double boiler
candy thermometer (optional)

Instructions:

Weighing out soy wax for diy homemade candles

Start by weighing out the wax in the pyrex measuring cup using the digital scale. Next, melt your wax either in the microwave or in a double boiler on the stove. Once melted, set aside to cool to about 185 degrees F, then weigh out the fragrance oils and stir into the wax. Set aside to cool further.

How to Make Homemade Candles

Now prepare your candle tin by cutting the wood wick so it fits inside the tin and place inside the metal base. Dip the bottom of the wick base slightly into the wax, then place in the center of the tin.

Once the wax starts to take on a slightly slushy or foggy appearance and is no longer completely clear, slowly pour the wax into the tin around the wick and then allow to cool completely at room temperature. For best results, wait at least 24 hours before burning and don’t forget to trim your wick to 1/4″ before every burn.

making candle labels

You can also label your candles. My son made several soy candles for gifts this year – that’s him pictured above working on his homemade Christmas gifts – and he used my full page blank sticker labels to draw his own labels with permanent markers.

DIY Handmade Soy Candles - Homemade Christmas Gift Idea

He then cut out his labels/gift tags and applied them to the lids of each tin and tied a ribbon around the outside of the tins. (This is where all those ribbons and pretty bits from handmade packages you’ve received come in handy!) He made his candles one at a time and scented each one differently using a Peppermint Stick fragrance oil, a Vanilla Buttercream fragrance oil, and one of my very favorites a Red Velvet Cake fragrance oil.

I’m actually planning on making more candles as handmade gifts of my own as well as wax melts and will be using a Frosted Pinecones fragrance oil I just purchased. I am admittedly a little head over heels for this at the moment. It’s a mix of pine and spruce with a touch of spice and is the perfect compromise if you have a guy in your life who isn’t big on more feminine scents.

I’m also planning to make a DIY Soy Wax Candle Making Kit for my niece for Christmas this year. Last year I put together a DIY Lip Balm Kit for her and she really enjoyed it so I thought the candles would be fun for her. I’ll be include one pound of soy wax, four 4 oz. tins, four medium wooden wicks and 1 oz. of Jammin’ Rock Candy fragrance oil which is just perfect as a kids’ scent.

Ingredients:

65 grams soy wax
10 grams refined shea butter
7 grams Perfect Pumpkin fragrance oil

Supplies:

Small soft wooden wicks
4 oz. deep round tin with lid
blank full page Kraft sticker label sheets (I used the ones from WorldLabel.com)

Tools:

digital kitchen scale
metal utensil for stirring
glass pyrex measuring cup
plastic transfer pipette
permanent color markers (optional)
pot holder or kitchen towel
Printable Perfect Pumpkin Massage Candle Labels
microwave
scissors
printer

Instructions:

This recipe yields one 4 oz. candle. However, with the minimum purchase of materials you purchase – 1 lb. soy wax, 2 oz. fragrance oil, 12 oz. shea butter, 10 wooden wicks, and 10 metal tins – you can make about seven candles. If you prefer to use essential oil rather than a fragrance oil, use half the amount of a skin safe essential oil. (Also be sure to try these candles in Frosted Cranberry!)

Start by placing the wooden wick inside the metal tin then use scissors to cut the wick so it’s just a hair shorter than the tin. Place the wick inside the metal base and set inside the middle of the metal tin.

Now, using a digital kitchen scale, weigh out the soy wax and shea butter inside the glass pyrex measuring cup. Heat in the microwave until the wax and shea butter have melted, approximately 2 minutes. Carefully remove from the microwave using a pot holder or kitchen towel as the measuring cup will be hot.

Place the container of wax and shea butter onto the digital kitchen scale and press tare. Using a plastic transfer pipette to slowly add the fragrance oil to the wax base, weigh out 7 grams of fragrance oil. Then stir with a metal utensil. I generally use a butter knife.

Now slowly pour all of the scented wax into the metal tin. If your wick shifts, don’t worry. You can easily reposition it after you’ve poured the wax.

Finally, allow the wax to cool completely then label, use or gift! The safety and caution label should go on the bottom of each candle. If desired, you can color in the labels with markers to give your candles a handmade touch or to express your own creativity. Be sure to trim your wick to 1/4″ high before every use and blow out the candle before dipping your fingers into the wax to avoid accidental burns from the flame. {Download the Printable Perfect Pumpkin Massage Candle Labels here.}

About Homemade Massage Candles

Since around 2006 massage candles, also known as lotion candles, have risen in popularity. These nifty 2-in-1 candles not only make your home smell great, but the melted, liquified wax can also be used to massage onto skin to moisturize and add a lovely fragrance to your skin.

Most homemade massage candles I’ve come across are simply make from natural soy wax, which has a low melt point of about 102 degrees F, and fragrance. However, when I was at Floyd Fest over the summer, there was a vendor there selling homemade massage candles made with not only soy wax, but also with shea butter and essential oils. As prospective customers would approach her booth, she would offer them a “hand job” and massage the melted wax from these homemade massage candles onto each recipients’ hand. She would then give each customer a sticker that stated, “I got a hand job from” her company name.

I really loved the addition of the shea butter, so I decided to try my own. These are super simple to make – definitely easier than making homemade soap from scratch – and you can scent with them your choice of essential oils or with a fragrance oil like I did for mine. I’ve created this massage candle recipe to make one single 4 oz. candle at a time, but you can make multiples at once by simply doubling the recipe as needed. I also chose to use wooden wicks for these candles as not only do I love the burn of a wood wick, but they are a lot easier to work with for beginners.

I LOVE these for handmade Christmas gift ideas, stocking stuffers, housewarming gifts or even DIY winter wedding favors! You’ll really be surprised by how amazingly easy these are to craft. Plus, I’ve included printable labels to make packaging your candles a snap! Dress them up further with your favorite patterned washi tape.
