Lately, I’ve been drooling over all the bright, clean kitchens on Instagram.

Even though a full kitchen makeover isn’t in my budget, I’ve found some affordable ways to rediscover pride in my home, so I wanted to share them with you. (My roommate LOVES all of these ideas! Being a little OCD herself – like that’s a bad thing? – she’s always excited when my order from Grove Co. arrives.)

It’s amazing how something as simple as a good spring cleaning or a bouquet of fresh flowers on the counter can help you fall in love with the home you have — whether it’s a tiny apartment or your dream home.

Green Cleaning Tips & Tricks for Spring Entertaining

Step 1: Instead of treating spring cleaning as a chore, set the tone for an enjoyable day by opening the doors to let the spring air in and brewing a fresh pot of coffee.

Step 2: Start with a clean slate. Mrs. Meyer’s multi-surface spray makes quick work of cleaning appliances, the inside of the fridge, countertops, and backsplashes. Plus, it leaves your kitchen smelling like a spring garden!

Step 3: To get your pots and pans ready for new spring recipes, make a paste with Bon Ami and water and apply it all over. Let it sit for about 10 minutes, then wipe away those scorch marks with a sponge. I prefer Grove’s walnut scrubber sponges because they don’t scratch your cookware!

Step 4: The sink is probably the most used area in your kitchen, but gets the least love when it’s time to clean. Grab the Bon Ami again and sprinkle it on your sink and faucet, rub with a wet cloth, and then wipe clean. To freshen up your garbage disposal, squirt Mrs. Meyer’s dish soap into the disposal and run the disposal with hot water. The mint scent is especially good for neutralizing odors!

Step 5: Just like a statement necklace can make an old outfit feel new, sink-side accessories can totally transform your kitchen. I love Mrs. Meyer’s hand and dish soaps because they add a pop of cheerful color to my kitchen and smell amazing!

Step 6: Treat your kitchen to a fresh new towel in a spring color. I consider these Grove chef’s towels an essential, since they work for everything from wiping hands, to drying spills and dishes, to grabbing hot pans. The cornflower blue color is brand new, and you’ll be among the first to get one!

Step 7: Trick your guests into thinking you redecorated with strategically placed accessories like a bamboo cutting board, a wooden handle dish brush, or a stoneware tray. I got all of mine from Grove! (And, if you’re a soapmaker like me, these are also the perfect props for photographing your homemade soaps to sell.)

Step 8: Of course, you can never go wrong with cut flowers. But lately, I love filling glass jars with fresh herbs like cilantro, mint, or chives. Decorative, and useful!

DIY Succulent Container Garden

So whether you have a green thumb – or a not so green thumb – you’ll love the natural beauty a succulent container garden offers! Here’s how to make your own.

Not only do these succulent container gardens make a beautiful home accent piece both indoors or out, but they are also extremely low maintenance! In fact, my succulents tend to fare best when I forget to water them.

DIY Succulent Container Garden

To create your DIY succulent container garden you’ll need to start by purchasing the dirt, succulents and other materials you’ll need to use for your container garden. I started with an assortment of my favorite succulent plants.

DIY Succulent Container Garden! Learn how to make your own DIY succulent container garden. Not only do these succulent container gardens make a beautiful home accent piece both indoors or out, but they are also extremely low maintenance!

As I was working with smaller containers, I bought the smallest pots of succulents I could find. You should be able to purchase succulents from your local farmer’s market or greenhouse or from a home & hardware store. Alternately you can also buy live succulent plants online from both Amazon and Etsy.

Learn how to make your own DIY succulent container garden. Not only do these succulent container gardens make a beautiful home accent piece both indoors or out, but they are also extremely low maintenance! In fact, my succulents tend to fare best when I forget to water them.

In addition to the succulents, I also bought some cactus and succulent soil mix for my DIY succulent container garden. This soil mix allows for drainage that your succulents need. You’ll also need a container, some small rocks or stones or other interesting found items.

I used a handmade pottery dish as my container. I liked the low, wide round shape that gave me room to include a variety of succulents together.

Upcycled Ketel One Vodka Succulent Planter from Looking Sharp Cactus

Of course, you don’t need to choose a traditional container for your DIY succulent container garden. Containers like an upcycled bottle also works well. I love this succulent arrangement from Looking Sharp Cactus in which a vodka bottle is used as the planter. (You can even purchase all of the components for your succulent container garden as a kit if you like.)

Upcycled Wine Bottle Planter from Gottles! This upcycled wine bottle planter is perfect for creating your own DIY succulent container garden!

Alternately, you can also buy and upcycled bottle planter that’s pre-cut for you. I like this upcycled wine bottle planter from Gottles. Gottles also sells an array of other upcycled glass bottle planters made from liquor bottles as well as some pretty cool upcycled bottle pendant lamps.

All of the rocks I used for my DIY succulent container garden I was able to find with a little foraging. If your yard is rock free, take a walk through a local park to see what you discover.

DIY Succulent Container Garden! Learn how to make your own DIY succulent container garden. Not only do these succulent container gardens make a beautiful home accent piece both indoors or out, but they are also extremely low maintenance! In fact, my succulents tend to fare best when I forget to water them.

Once you’ve gathered all of your materials, you’re ready to create your succulent container garden! To do this, simply fill your container with the succulent soil mix, then add succulents throughout the container using rocks to break up sections or fill in gaps.

I left my DIY succulent container garden a little sparse. However, my succulents grew and filled the plant in rather quickly. In addition, if you’ll be keeping your succulents indoors, it’s best not to crowd them so they get as much light as possible. (Check out 9 secrets to growing succulents indoors at Gardenista blog here.)

Alternately, you can crowd your succulents a bit and plant up to the edges for a container garden that looks lush from the start if you’ll be displaying them outdoors.

Once you’ve planted all of the succulents in your container, water the soil in your pot.

Keep your succulent in a bright, sunny spot in your home – in front of a window is a wonderful spot – or outside on a patio. Succulents grow best when they get a lot of light. However, they do need some sun protection if temperatures are above 90°F.

DIY After Sun Moisturizers to Soothe Sunburned Skin

I may receive compensation from links on this site. See my disclosure policy.

Well, spring is here and it’s in full force. I got sunburned on my neck and collarbone yesterday simply driving the car with the windows down! Luckily I had sunscreen on my face but it was an important reminder that we should be applying sunscreen to our décolletage as well.

DIY After Sun Moisturizers to help soothe sunburned skin and promote healing.

Of course, there are times we do forgot sunscreen. Or we didn’t apply it often enough. Or it wasn’t strong enough. So here are three DIY After Sun Moisturizers to help soothe sunburned skin and promote healing.

3 DIY After Sun Moisturizers

Quench parched sunburned skin with this easy spray on silky after sun moisturizer recipe. Hemp and jojoba oils naturally moisturize skin without clogging pores while cyclomethicone helps give this after sun moisturizer a silky smooth feel that's not heavy or greasy.

This Silky After Sun Moisturizer Spray Recipe quenches sunburned skin with moisturizing hemp seed and jojoba oils. The addition of cyclomethicone adds a silky smooth feel that’s not heavy or greasy while also helping to protect skin from irritating clothing. It also contains natural vitamin E to promote healing while calming lavender and chamomile essential oils round off the finished product for an after sun moisturizer that’s sure to please. Learn to make it here.

This natural After Sun Skin Soother Cream Recipe is made from natural skin nourishing oils, shea butter, essential oils and aloe vera gel. It's perfect for replenishing those stubborn spots of dry skin or for soothing and speeding up the healing process after a sunburn.

My Sun + Skin Soother After Sun Cream Recipe is made from natural skin nourishing oils, shea butter, essential oils and aloe vera gel. It’s perfect for replenishing those stubborn spots of dry skin or for soothing and helping to promote healing after a sunburn. It’s made with Mountain Rose Herbs’ Restorative Skin Oil which is also lovely all on its own. The much revered and time-tested formula is well suited for mature skin, and perfect to use when running into problems with dry and other “leathery” or “lizardy” skin appearance. Learn to make this sun + skin after sun moisturizer here.

This natural burn relief spray recipe was created for a friend with breast cancer to help soothe the pain caused by radiation treatment and promote healing. However, you'll find this burn relief spray also works great on run of the mill sunburns.

My natural burn relief spray recipe is also a wonderful after sun moisturizer that you can spray on. It contains a special blend of natural ingredients to soothe the pain caused by sunburns. It’s ingredients include arnica infused oil and neem oil. Arnica, like neem oil, not only has analgesic (meaning it relieves pain) properties, but it also helps with inflammation. Learn to make it here.

Strawberry Smoothie Foaming Salt Scrub Recipe

Dish up some fun in the kitchen with this amazing strawberry smoothie salt scrub recipe! It’s exfoliating and toning skin care properties will help keep your skin ready to show off all season long! Keep reading to learn how to make this easy spring inspired strawberry smoothie foaming salt scrub recipe!

Strawberry Smoothie Foaming Salt Scrub Recipe! Learn how to make this easy spring inspired strawberry smoothie foaming whipped salt scrub recipe! It's made with real strawberry powder which is rich in polyphenols and Vitamin C and has natural skin soothing properties.

I created this foaming salt scrub recipe with real strawberry fruit powder for it’s skin soothing properties. Strawberry fruit powder is rich in polyphenols and Vitamin C and has toning properties when used in skincare products.

In addition, I used dendritic salt in lieu of regular salt. Dendritic salt has a finer grain and larger surface area than other salts which offers greater fragrance retention in cosmetic applications. It also dissolves faster in water.

Ingredients:

8 oz. (227 grams) foaming bath whip
14 oz. (113 grams) dendritic salt
1 oz. (28 grams) strawberry fruit powder
.25 oz. (7 grams) strawberry fragrance oil
2 teaspoons Fuschia Pink mica powder

Instructions:

In a large container, weigh out the foaming bath whip base and the fragrance oil. Mix together. (I specifically used Crafter’s Choice foaming bath whip for my strawberry smoothie foaming salt scrub recipe.)

In a separate container weigh out the salt and strawberry fruit powder.

Then, using a measuring spoon, measure out the mica powder.

Mix the mica, strawberry powder and salt together then pour into the scented foaming bath whip base, mixing with a spatula as you go.

Once the dry ingredients are incorporated into the scented foaming bath whip base, mix well with a hand mixer on high speed for 3-5 minutes.

Now spoon or pipe the strawberry smoothie foaming salt scrub into your containers of choice. I used 9 oz. clear straight sided glass jars with silver metal lug caps from from SKS Bottle & Packaging. This product will yield around 22 oz. (624 grams) of product by volume. So I was able to fill two 9 oz. and one 4 oz. glass jars.

To use, simply remove desired amount and massage onto damp skin in the shower to cleanse, tone and exfoliate, then rinse off.

My strawberry smoothie foaming salt scrub recipe is best suited for normal to oily skin.

It is important to note that fine salt crystals will dissolve in this base over time. Therefore I recommend using larger salt crystals than the dendritic salt if you aren’t using this product right away. You can also substitute the salt with sugar.

In addition, I advise using an additional preservative if you’re planning to sell or store your strawberry smoothie foaming salt scrub prior to use for an extended amount of time. If selling your homemade products, you’ll need to follow FDA guidelines for labeling your product. Not sure how to label your creations? I highly recommend the book, Soap and Cosmetic Labeling: How to Follow the Rules and Regs Explained in Plain English, by Marie Gale.

Like the idea of strawberries but don’t want a strawberry scent? This foaming salt scrub recipe is also nice with a pink lemonade flavor oil!

Ingredients:

6 oz. ultra refined high melt point shea butter
.75 oz. refined cocoa butter
.5 oz. jojoba oil

.5 oz. emulsifying wax
.2 oz. aloe vera oil

Exfoliating Whipped Sugar Scrub Recipe

© Rebecca D. Dillon

Ingredients:

13 oz. white granulated sugar
6 oz. ultra refined high melt point shea butter
.75 oz. refined cocoa butter
.5 oz. jojoba oil
.5 oz. fractionated coconut oil
.5 oz. emulsifying wax
.5 oz. lagoon green jojoba beads
.2 oz. aloe vera oil
1/2 teaspoon xanthan gum powder
.2 oz. fragrance oil or .1 oz. essential oil

Instructions:

Using a digital scale weigh out the shea butter, cocoa butter and  emulsifying wax. Heat in a double boiler until melted. (Alternately you can also heat in a large glass Pyrex container in the microwave at 50% power.)

Next weigh out the jojoba oil, fractionated coconut oil and aloe vera oil. (Please note that fractionated coconut oil is not the same as regular coconut oil and it is always liquid at room temperature or colder. In addition aloe vera oil is not the same thing as aloe vera gel. It’s actually an oil.)

Add the oils to the double boiler and stir well to combine.

Remove from heat and measure out the xanthan gum powder. Whisk into the melted butter mixture until it dissolves.

Now weigh out your fragrance of choice and stir into the melted body butter mixture.

A great scent choice for essential oils is equal parts lemongrass essential oil and peppermint essential oil with just a “splash” of lime peel essential oil. Or if a fragrance oil is preferred, I really love a limoncello fragrance oil for spring!

Allow the mixture to cool until it begins to get cloudy. (You can speed this process up by placing your melted ingredients in the refrigerator for a short amount of time.)

And whether you're creating these products to gift or to sell, you can give them the same professional look as the big companies with your own custom designed waterproof vinyl labels from StickerYou!

To make the whipped body butter soufflé recipe:

Then, if you are making the whipped body butter soufflé, pour the melted mixture into your mixing bowl and whip until your body butter reaches the desired consistency. I highly recommend a stand mixer for this step as it can take a while.

Once your whipped body butter soufflé has a creamy, marshmallow fluff like texture it can be spooned into your jars. (You should be able to hold a spoon of the whipped body butter upside down without it dripping off.) This recipe will yield two 8 oz. whipped body souffles.

To use, apply sparingly as a little goes a long way. Once your skin absorbs the body butter souffle, it will not feel greasy or tacky and you will really be able to feel the hydration that it locks in. For this reason I loved this product on my hands and feet – but feel free to use it anywhere you like.

If you are scenting your whipped body butter soufflé with essential oils or lip safe fragrance oils, this feels AMAZING on lips too!

To make the exfoliating whipped sugar scrub recipe:

If you are making the whipped sugar scrub, once your melted oils have cooled, weigh out the jojoba beads and the sugar and combine with the melted body butter mixture in your mixing bowl. Whip until the sugar scrub reaches desired consistency or until it holds onto your whisk or a spoon without dropping off.

Now spoon or pipe your whipped sugar scrub into your containers. My whipped sugar scrub recipe yields approximately four 8 oz. jars.

To use, scoop out desired amount and massage onto wet skin in the bath or shower as desired. Rinse off then pat dry.
