As if being overrun with soapmaking supplies wasn’t bad enough, I also have a rather large craft stash. Among these items was an Ikea MOPPE mini storage chest. Being short on space since moving in with my best friend this past December, I decided it was finally time to put this storage chest to good use. Thus, this DIY crafts desk organizer became my first Ikea hack.

I love the bright colors I chose to use for this project. As my bedroom/office area is mostly gray, the bold pop of colors really added a bit of the cheer and fun that reflects my personality. (As you may recall my kitchen table makeover from this past summer.)

Additionally, this storage chest makeover freed up additional shelving on my double trestle desk I bought from Target recently. So I really love all the extra desktop storage space I now have as a result of my DIY crafts desk organizer.

While the Ikea MOPPE mini storage chest is currently not available, you can easily recreate this DIY crafts desk organizer idea using a similar unfinished wood storage chest or desktop organizer.

What to Do:

Begin by painting the outside of each of the box drawers, the cabinet and the wood shapes for your DIY crafts desk organizer. You’ll need two to three coats of paint on all of the surfaces depending on the quality of your paint.

I also painted the inside of the box drawers in contrasting colors. And, because of the footed foundations I chose to use for my crafts desk organizer, I chose to use the bottom drawer on top of my organizer. This in turn gave me additional shelf space on the bottom and created a tray space on top for supplies I use the most.

Once the paint dries, you can add decorative washi tape to your DIY crafts desk organizer as desired. Then spray your storage cabinet with two or three coats of a clear acrylic sealer to keep the washi tape in place or to further protect your cabinet.

Once the sealer dries, use E-6000 to adhere the curio knobs to the the notches in the drawers. You can also use the same adhesive to glue on your painted wooden shapes as desired. If needed you can use masking tape to hold the curio knobs in place until the glue has set up. (Note that it can take up to 72 hours for E-6000 to fully set up.)

Now use the E-6000 to glue the footed foundation onto the bottom of your DIY crafts desk organizer.

Once the glue has cured, you can put everything together. I added some cute decorative cups to the bottom shelf that I found at Target’s Dollar Spot. All that’s left is to fill your DIY crafts desk organizer with your craft supplies and tools!

I used my crafts desk organizer to store my paint markers, pens, markers and pencils.

It also gave me a LOT of extra room to stash all of my washi tape.

DIY Magnetic Tin

Yesterday I went a little crazy making things with some rare earth magnets. While I had them out I decided to make a tin to hold my chalk for writing on my chalkboard cabinet doors.
My Chimes Ginger Chews tins were the perfect size for holding my chalk and I love the tins just the way they are. However, if you want to use this idea, feel free to decoupage the tins first with some of your favorite scrapbook papers or fabric. All I did was glue two rare earth magnets onto the back of the tin with some E6000 and let dry.
Then I filled the tin with chalk and stuck it to the fridge! Now the chalk is in easy reach for both the family and guests when they come over without having to dig through drawers.
Need other things close at hand in the kitchen? Use tins to hold pens, pencils and short scissors as well! What small items or utensils do you like to keep at hand in the kitchen that would fit into a magnetic tin on the fridge?

Books, books and more books. I love to read, but lately I just haven’t had the time. I’ve been trying to finish up the 4th book in the Vampire Academy series, Blood Promise, by Richelle Mead since school let out. I’d been reading it slowly on the days I’d pick my son up from school while I was waiting for him in the parking lot. Now it’s just hit and miss when waiting for dr. appointments, etc. I’m hoping to wrap up the hundred pages pretty soon though as I’m dying to dive into two new books I just purchased from series I read regularly.

Last week I bought Bullet the latest in the Anita Blake Vampire Hunter Series by Laurell K. Hamilton – and River Marked – part of the Mercy Thompson Series by Patricia Briggs. Of course, I still need to get my hands on Charlaine Harris’ newest book in the Sookie Stackhouse Series, Dead Reckoning. I’ve been reading these series since I first discovered them about seven years ago. As a result, not only am I hooked, but I’m also a loyal fan of the HBO series, True Blood, based on the books by Charlaine Harris. I anxiously awaited for two years for the show to air between hearing that HBO was going to produce the show and the show actually airing. Now that I’ve gotten my hands on some of the books I want, there’s just finding the time to read. For those of you with crazy busy schedules, how do you find the time to squeeze in a book here and there?

Anyhow, since I’m on the topic of books, I thought I’d share a few diy craft projects for book related projects.

DIY Project: Brenna’s Secret Storage Books from Design*Sponge

I love this project for Secret Storage Books from Design*Sponge. Made from recycled clamshell style boxes and cardboard, these tiny “storage units” look like real life books and will neatly on your bookcase blending in with the other books on your shelves. Use them to hide supplies, cash, documents, journals, and secret gifts. You can find the full, step by step tutorial on Design*Sponge blog. What will you hide in yours?

Modern Library Storage Bin from Roadside Photographs

Have old books that are falling apart or can longer be used? Remove the spines from a selection of old books and recycle them by gluing them along a wooden box or crate for an enticing storage space like this Modern Library Storage Bin for sale from Roadside Photographs. Use it to store and organize books, magazines, cds, dvds, scrapbooking papers or anything else your mind can think up! Use the pages from your discarded books to decorate recycled jars into candle holders. You just need a little mod podge and some imagination. Arrow & Apple blog provides a diy tutorial for doing just this!

How To: Not Your Ordinary Book Light from Grathio Labs

I’m also in love with this diy book light project from Grathio Labs. While you start by recycling a hardcover book, the process is a bit complicated and requires some wood, glue, soldering and wiring. The end result though is worth the effort. However, if this is beyond your crafting expertise, you may be able to sweet talk a handy man in your life into the task in exchange for something you’re more capable of crafting on your own. You’ll find full instructions and a project list for this book light at Grathio Labs.
