Why Yerba Mate & Apple Cider Vinegar?

Raw apple cider vinegar is traditionally used in hair rinses for a variety of reasons. Not only does raw apple cider vinegar contain beneficial nutrients such as B vitamins, vitamin C and potassium that benefit hair, but the natural acidity of apple cider vinegar helps to restore hair’s natural PH balance. What this means for you is smoother, shinier hair that’s less prone to snagging and tangling. In addition, the alpha-hydroxy acid found in vinegar helps to exfoliate both your scalp and hair to remove dead skin cells, sweat and product buildup and residue.

In short, the regular use of an apple cider vinegar rinse leads to healthier hair with increased body and shine, decreased frizz and improvement to issues such as itchy scalp or dandruff. Treated hair will also have increased clarity and your scalp will have fewer clogged hair follicles means reduced shedding and hair loss.

While this yerba mate hair rinse is especially beneficial for anyone using a no poo hair care approach, it's wonderful for all hair types.

Yerba Mate tea, like apple cider vinegar, is also packed with natural vitamins and minerals that help to strengthen hair follicles to reduce hair loss and improve volume. It’s also believed that yerba mate helps to restore hair’s natural luster and color.

Both yerba mate and apple cider vinegar shouldn’t be reserved just for your hair though. Both of these natural products have benefits for your body when consumed. Raw apple cider vinegar not only contains beneficial probiotics but it can also help you maintain a healthy weight. (I love my turmeric ginger apple cider vinegar tonic recipe for this.)

Uses for Yerba Mate tea other than just drinking it!

Yerba Mate, on the other hand, gives you that amazing caffeine kick that coffee normally would but without the jittery feeling that can come with it. It also helps to promote healthy weight loss and stimulates the immune system in addition to a variety of other health benefits. (Discover other benefits Yerba Mate has to offer here.) Plus it just tastes delicious!

You can add one Tablespoon of raw apple cider vinegar to 16 oz. of Yerba Mate tea with a touch of your fave sweetener to get the best of both Yerba Mate and apple cider vinegar in a healthful daily drink!

Got it? Great! Check out my yerba mate hair rinse recipe below to get started!

4 teaspoons Yerba Mate
12 drops lavender essential oil
12 drops rosemary essential oil
12 drops peppermint essential oil

While this yerba mate hair rinse is especially beneficial for anyone using a no poo hair care approach, it's wonderful for all hair types.

You’ll begin my making the yerba mate tea for your yerba mate hair rinse.

Yerba Mate tea, like apple cider vinegar, is also packed with natural vitamins and minerals that help to strengthen hair follicles which reduces hair loss and improves volume. It's also believed that yerba mate helps to restore hair's natural luster and color.

To do this, bring 16 fluid ounces of water to a boil. Remove from heat and add 4 teaspoons of Yerba Mate Tea. Steep 5-10 minutes.

I used the Shade-Grown Yerba Mate from Adagio Teas. (I’ve been a customer of theirs for years and am never disappointed.)

While this yerba mate hair rinse is especially beneficial for anyone using a no poo hair care approach, it's wonderful for all hair types.

Strain the tea from the water and add to a glass pitcher. Allow the tea to cool to room temperature as too much heat will kill the beneficial bacteria found in raw apple cider vinegar.

Once cool, mix in four tablespoons of raw apple cider vinegar.

I used Bragg’s apple cider vinegar that I purchased from Thrive Market. However, you can also purchase Bragg’s ACV at Amazon as well as find it at your local grocer. It’s typically in the organic section.

Add the essential oils if desired – they are optional but are wonderful for scalp health as well – and mix. Alternately you can also use your own favorite essential oil blend for hair.

I used essential oils from Mountain Rose Herbs for their trusted quality. You can purchase all their Classic Essential Oil Kit if you’re just getting started which contains all three essential oils used in my yerba mate hair rinse recipe as well as five other common essential oils.

After shampooing hair using your preferred method – whether that’s shampoo, a cleansing conditioner or a shampoo bar – either pour over hair or spritz onto scalp using a spray bottle and massage into scalp, then rinse. Use up to two times a week if you have oily hair or as little as once a month for dry hair.

Party Pleasers: A light Rooibos Peach Tea Rum Punch Recipe favorite and a crowd pleasing Black Bean Dip Recipe!

Over the weekend I hosted an amazing, super fun cocktail & cookout party filled with (now) proven party pleasers. I went all out for this party and included a selfie spot with props – this was not a thing twenty years ago – and in addition to make your own cocktail stations, I also included two pre-made spiked punches.

You must try this delicious Black Bean Dip Recipe for your next party! It's so simple to make. Just mix it all together the night before, refrigerate overnight and serve the next day!

There was also smoked pork butt, brisket and lamb along with grilled veggies and homemade dessert selections. I also made my fantastic black bean dip for pre-dinner snacking.

For the smoked meats we offered a BBQ sauce bar with four sauce and a crazy hot pepper vinegar. I also set out pink Himalayan salt in a dish and black peppercorns for extra seasoning.

I purchased my alcohol for this party from Mouth.com as they offered cocktail kits with recipes. This made the entire process of planning the cocktail menu a lot easier.

Their Au Pear Cocktail Kit was a huge hit. Made with Square One Botanical Vodka and George Spiced Pear Liqueur, this was also the most complex cocktail recipe. Fortunately we had someone dive right in with this one from the start so no one was intimidated by the process. You can find the recipe for the Au Pear Cocktail at Mouth here.

My own Rooibos Peach Tea Rum Punch Recipe was also a party pleaser. Made with a combination of light and dark rum as well as Adagio’s Rooibos Peach Tea, this drink offered lighter alcohol content and tasted exactly like summer peach tea!

Party Pleasers: Fun face coasters and a self spot plus a light Rooibos Peach Tea Rum Punch Recipe and a crowd pleasing Black Bean Dip Recipe!

The Paladone Face Coasters I’d purchased some time back were another of many party pleasers.

We had the most fun with these coasters and everyone loved them.

These crazy fun Realistic Fun Mouth Photo Stick Props are a sure party pleaser for selfie spots at your event!

We also had a blast playing with the mouth photo sticks I found and bought from Oriental Trading.

Party selfie prop ideas! This battle ax was the most fun for memorable party photographs!

It didn’t end there though. In addition to a blow up selfie frame, we also had a battle ax which turned out to be brilliant for creating memorable photos.

And of course everyone went home with fun party favor bags filled with handmade donut soaps, handmade solid donut salt scrubs, illustrated temporary tattoos and artisan lollipops.

Ingredients:

64 oz. water
4 Tablespoons Adagio Rooibos Peach Tea
1 1/2 Cups light (clear) rum
1/2 Cup dark or special rum
1/2 Cup simple syrup
2-3 ripe peaches

Directions:

To make this Rooibos Peach Tea Rum Punch Recipe you’ll first need to wash and dry the peaches. Once clean, cut the peaches in half and remove the seed. Then cut the peaches into wedges. Place the peaches in a large heat safe pot or container. (I used a large 8 cup glass Pyrex measuring cup as it has a spout.)

Then fill 1-2 paper tea filters with 4 Tablespoons of tea. (You can put all 4 Tbs into one tea bag or split it into two tea bags as desired.) Place the tea bags into the container with the peaches.

In a large container or an electric kettle, bring half the amount of water needed to a boil.

Once the water boils, remove from heat and pour over the tea bags and peaches.

Steep the tea for 5 minutes, then remove the tea bags from the container, squeezing them to remove the excess tea from the bags.

Measure out the simple syrup and stir into the hot tea.

Now measure out and the rums and the remaining water and combine in a separate gallon sized container.

Pour the hot tea into the rum/water mixture and mix well.

Cover and refrigerate until use.

You can remove the softened peaches if desired for another dish or leave them in the tea for visual interest.

To drink, simply pour the Rooibos peach tea rum punch over ice and enjoy.

Coffee + Black Tea Under Eye Cream Recipe

This coffee & black tea under eye cream is an energizing antioxidant balm that’s perfect for tired eyes and skin. Made with anti-inflammatory coffee essential oil and antioxidant rich darjeeling tea, this coffee & black tea under eye cream recipe helps to blur the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles while also lending its nourishing antioxidant skin care properties.

To create my coffee & black tea under eye cream, I first infused Darjeeling Sungma Summer Tea in camellia (tea seed) oil. This tea, which I acquired from Adagio Teas, is a wonderfully delicious second flush black tea.

Darjeeling tea is often called the “champagne of teas.” And like black, white and green teas, Darjeeling tea has been shown to fight cancer, cavities and obesity. However, Darjeeling tea is special in that it may have the additional benefit of protection against stomach ulcers. (Source.)

And of course tea is rich in antioxidants that are great not just for the inside of your body, but they’re also wonderful for the outside of your body. Because of this, tea extract is a common ingredient in many topical skin care products and anti-aging skin creams.

So, if you’re going to buy tea for my coffee & black tea under eye cream recipe, consider purchasing a Darjeeling tea which is a treat by the cup as well as on your skin!

In addition to black tea, this recipe also contains coffee essential oil. Coffee, which has anti-inflammatory properties, has been shown to help reduce under eye puffiness as well as help to relieve dark under eye circles (not caused by hereditary factors.)

In addition, research has shown that applying coffee to skin can offer a layer of protection from harmful UV rays. Coffee’s diuretic properties can also help to relieve redness and irritation from sun damage, especially for those who suffer from Rosaceae. It’s also believed to tighten and brighten skin. Coffee & Black Tea Under Eye Cream Recipe

© Rebecca D. Dillon

Ingredients:

3 oz. refined shea butter
.35 oz. Darjeeling black tea infused camellia (tea seed) oil
.15 oz. babassu oil
.45 oz. emulsifying wax
.1 oz. Dimethicone
.1 oz. isopropyl myristate
.1 oz. coffee essential oil
few drops vitamin E oil, optional

Instructions:

You’ll begin by infusing your Darjeeling tea in camellia (tea seed) oil. (Learn more about camellia seed oil here.)

How to make tea infused oil for a natural coffee & black tea under eye cream!

To do this, begin by filling a small mason jar about halfway with tea. Then pour camellia (tea seed) oil into the mason jar until it reaches about a quarter to a half inch above the tea. Gently heat the mason jar over low heat using the double boiler method for 1-5 hours. Alternately, if you aren’t in a rush, you can use the solar infusion method. (Learn more about infusing herbs in oil at the Mountain Rose Herbs blog here.)

How to make tea infused oil for a natural coffee & black tea under eye cream!

Once you’ve infused the camellia oil with tea, strain the oil from the tea using cheesecloth.

Using a digital scale, weigh out the emulsifying wax and shea butter. Heat in a glass Pyrex measuring cup in the microwave at 50% power or in a double boiler until melted.

Remove from heat. Weigh out the babassu oil and stir into the melted wax and shea butter mixture until it melts. (Learn more about babassu oil here.)

Now weigh out black tea infused camellia oil and add to the melted ingredients. Stir to combine.

Weigh out all of the remaining ingredients and stir into the coffee & black tea under eye cream mixture.

Add several drops of vitamin E oil if desired and mix in.

Now pour the liquid coffee & black tea under eye cream mixture evenly into two 2.3 oz. clear glass thick wall cosmetic jars with black lined caps. (I got my jars from SKS Bottle & Packaging here.)

Allow to cool completely, then screw on the lids. You can place your coffee & black tea under eye cream in the fridge to speed up the cooling process. As this recipe yields a soft non-greasy balm that melts on skin contact, it may take 24-48 hours to fully solidify and reach its final consistency.

Label your jars as desired for gifting or personal use.

To use simply apply a small amount of the coffee & black tea under eye cream under your eyes onto clean skin and massage in. Use daily under makeup to help energize under eye skin and reduce puffiness and dark circles as well as to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. This product is also wonderful on dry hands and feet!

If you plan to sell your coffee & black tea under eye cream, you’ll need to follow FDA guidelines for labeling your product. If you’re unsure about the rules and regulations regarding labeling cosmetics, I highly recommend the book, Soap and Cosmetic Labeling: How to Follow the Rules and Regs Explained in Plain English, by Marie Gale.
