What’s the story morning glory?

Everyone once in awhile by a sheer stroke of luck, I think, I come up with a skin care recipe that I’m just head over heels for. It’s kind of like, well… magic! My new unicorn glitter butter recipe is one of those magical recipes. Not only does it feel and smell amazing, but you will sparkle will like mad whenever you wear it! I hope you enjoy my new unicorn glitter butter recipe as I much as I do.

Unicorn Glitter Butter Recipe

Ingredients:

1 oz. refined shea butter
1 oz. fractionated coconut oil
1 oz. sweet almond oil
.25 oz. vegetable glycerin
.25 oz. kokum butter
.25 oz. cera bellina wax
.05 oz. candelilla wax
.10 oz. candy crush fragrance oil
.5 oz. iridescent super sparkle glitter
.1 oz. super pearly white mica
1/4 teaspoon colloidal oatmeal
1/4 teaspoon rose pearl mica
1/4 teaspoon mauvey gem mica
1 mL vitamin E oil

Instructions:

Using a digital scale, weigh out the shea butter, kokum butter, cera bellina wax and the candelilla wax. Heat until melted in a double boiler (or in a glass Pyrex measuring cup at 40% power in the microwave) until melted.  Remove from heat.

Weigh out the fractionated coconut oil, glycerin, and sweet almond oil. Stir into the previously melted ingredients.

Next, weigh out the fragrance and stir in. Follow with the vitamin E oil (optional) using a graduated transfer pipette to measure out the amount called for.

Now, using a teaspoon measure, measure out the colloidal oatmeal and the rose pear and mauvey gem micas. (You can substitute these colors for ones of your own if desired. These micas give my unicorn glitter butter the pretty purple tint, but won’t color skin.) Stir into the unicorn glitter butter base.

Finally weigh out the super pearly white mica and the iridescent super sparkle glitter and stir into the unicorn glitter butter.

Allow the butter to cool and thicken. Once it starts to thicken, remix the unicorn glitter butter with a fork or other utensil until the mica and glitter that have settled to the bottom are evenly incorporated throughout the product.

Once your unicorn glitter butter has completely thickened – this may take several hours to overnight – spoon the mixture evenly into two 1 oz. double walled jars.

Then screw the lids onto your jars and label as desired for personal use or gifting. I created my labels for my unicorn glitter butter using this magical unicorn clipart I purchased from Kenna Sato Designs.

A few important notes.

I don’t recommend substitutions for this recipe other than a color swap for the rose pearl and mauvey gem micas and the fragrance oil. The ingredients are kind of all perfectly balanced together based on their properties. It’s what gives this unicorn glitter butter its great creamy texture and keeps the glitter adhered to your skin.

This can be used anywhere on your body to add some shimmer and shine! However, this product is not recommended for eyes due to the glitter content. (Currently the FDA does not approve any glitters for use on eyes in the United States.)

If you’d like to be able to use my unicorn glitter butter on your lips as well as your body, you’ll need to swap out the mauvey gem mica for a lip safe mica and either omit the fragrance oil or use a lip safe fragrance oil.

If you make my unicorn glitter butter recipe I’d love to see how it turned out! Be sure to share a photo of your unicorn glitter butter along with your other bath and body recipe by using the tag #soapdelishowoff on instagram! (You might even get featured on my blog!)

How to Throw a DIY Bath Bomb Party

Disclosure: Blog posts may contain affiliate links for which I receive a small commission when you make a purchase. Full disclosure can be found here.

I’ve hosted several craft & cocktail nights already this summer. One project in particular however that a lot of friends and acquaintances wanted to try was bath bombs. But the logistics of setting up a DIY bath bomb party for a large group of people was a bit daunting.

How to throw a DIY Bath Bomb Party! It takes a bit of planning to pull the whole thing off. So, just how do you throw a DIY bath bomb party? Click through to learn how!

As I only own one scale and everyone wanted to create their own custom bath bombs it took a bit of planning to pull the whole thing off. So, just how do you throw a DIY bath bomb party? Keep reading to learn how!

How to throw a DIY bath bomb party!

Mermaid Lagoon Bath Bomb Recipe! Learn how to DIY a mermaid lagoon bath bomb for a fun and colorful addition to your bath time ritual. This mermaid lagoon bath bomb recipe yields two large bath bombs with moisturizing cocoa butter shells.

Step One

Your first step in planning a DIY bath bomb party is to choose a bath bomb recipe. (I used a spin off of my fizzing bath truffles recipe here for my DIY bath bomb party. Pictured above is my mermaid lagoon bath bomb for which you can find the recipe here.)

My recommendation is to look not only for a simple beginner bath bomb recipe, but perhaps use a no fail bath bomb recipe. You’ll also want to consider how your bath bombs are going to hold up in your current climate. Heat and humidity have a bad habit of turning a bath bomb success into a bath bomb fail and you don’t want your party guests to be disappointed.

Once you’ve found a recipe you think will work for your DIY bath bomb party, try it out! You’ll not only need to be sure that the recipe is easy to create, but that it’s going to be the success you’re hoping for. In addition, you’ll need to be confident in making the bath bomb recipe that you’ve chosen so you’re able to instruct your guests on not only the ins and outs of this project, but also to offer helpful tips if someone seems to be struggling to get it right.

So, just how do you throw a DIY bath bomb party? Click through to Soap Deli News blog now to learn how to throw a DIY bath bomb party for a large group of friends!

Step Two

The next step will be designing a bath bomb instruction sheet! This sheet should offer customization choices for your party guests.

I created my recipe and instruction sheet with the title of the bath bombs at the top of the page followed by a space that my guests could write in their name and the creation date of their custom bath bombs. I then typed out a list of the basic ingredients that would be needed to make the backbone of the bath bombs. This was followed by customization choices where party guests were able to write in the types and amounts of the additional ingredients they chose to use.

You can offer just one or two options for customization such as color and scent for a quick and easy project. Alternately, if you have a lot of various materials on hand, you can also offer different options for butters, carrier oils, clay, micas, lake dyes, and/or botanicals. For each of the additional ingredient options, you can either pre-fill in the amounts needed or let your guests choose which ingredient to use. You can also create the recipe so that all of the additional ingredients are entirely optional.

I used a high amount of cocoa butter in the DIY bath bomb party recipe I chose to help the bath bombs stay together and unmold easily even in the summer heat. However, if you also want to give your guests the choice of using hard or even soft butters in their bath bomb recipe, then keep in mind you will need a way to melt the butters.

I have only two microwaves and very little kitchen space. Therefore my guest created bath bombs in stages in sets of two with one group picking up where the next group left off. This also allowed for those a little shy about plunging right into the process time to get a feel for how it all worked.

For my liquid additives, I designed my DIY bath bomb party recipe sheet so that carrier oils, fragrances, etc. were measured out in mL using graduated plastic transfer pipettes which can be purchased inexpensively in bulk. The dry ingredient additions were also measured in teaspoons rather than a weight measurement as I currently only own one scale. This way no one was on the sidelines of the process for too long.

Once you have the logistics for your bath bomb recipe worked out, type up an instruction sheet for your DIY bath bomb party guests in a word program. Then simply print off enough sheets for everyone who will be in attendance. (You’ll want your guests to RSVP early so you have time to purchase enough supplies for everyone as well as to print off the correct amount of instruction sheets you’ll need. It’s up to you whether or not you’ll charge a materials fee.)

So, just how do you throw a DIY bath bomb party? Click through to Soap Deli News blog now to learn how to throw a DIY bath bomb party for a large group of friends!

Step Three

Once you’ve decided on your recipe and options, you’ll need to decide what type of bath bomb mold to use. I opted for halving the bath bomb recipe I chose in order to use smaller 1.75″ diameter round bath bomb molds. This allowed everyone to make a handful of bath bombs rather than just one or two large ones.

In addition, it also enabled everyone to take their bath bombs home while they were still in the molds. This way no one felt pushed to unmold their bath bombs too early. And no one had to worry about picking them up later if they chose to wait. It also kept their bath bombs from being damaged in transport home and they got to keep their molds. The smaller molds also allowed more guests to attend without driving up the cost of purchasing enough large 2.75″ bath bomb molds for everyone to create several bath bombs each.

Otherwise, you’ll need to allow enough time during your DIY bath bomb party for the bath bombs to harden enough to be unmolded prior to your guests leaving.

Step Four

Either the night before or the morning of, create a basic DIY bath bomb party kit for each of the guests who will be in attendance. By doing this, your guests don’t need to fight for access to a scale in order to weigh each of the ingredients. It also makes the process less daunting for first timers and leaves more time for social interaction.

For my DIY bath bomb party kits I weighed out 1 oz. of cocoa butter (per my recipe sheet) for each guest and put it into a snack sized zipper bag. I then weighed out and combined baking soda and SLSA into a sandwich zipper bag for each guest along with a third bag with the citric acid. Each kit was then placed into a brown paper bag with the three ingredient bags and bath bomb molds.

So, just how do you throw a DIY bath bomb party? Click through to Soap Deli News blog now to learn how to throw a DIY bath bomb party for a large group of friends!

Step Five

With your DIY bath bomb kits ready to go and guests arriving later in the day, it’s time to lay out your additional ingredients that your party guests can choose to use in addition to the kits.

For my carrier oils and Polysorbate 80 I filled 2-3 small 2 oz. bottles for each liquid ingredient. This allowed more hands to access the same ingredients at the same time. This also helped to prevent cross contamination on larger bottles of ingredients that you’ll be using in future products. You can do the same thing with your fragrance or essential oils if desired. Or simply be sure everyone is using a fresh pipette when they are adding more valuable resources that you aren’t able to divide into smaller containers for this purpose.

Make sure to label your smaller containers with sticker paper so everyone knows what’s inside of each one.

I then filled low profile jars with various clays and botanicals and labeled them as well. I left my mica colors and glitter in the original containers.

Be sure to set up a container of fresh pipettes and measuring spoons on your ingredient table along with large glass mixing bowls – one for each guest – utensils and/or large glass Pyrex measuring cups. If you only have one set of measuring spoons and are short on glass mixing bowls, ask if some of your DIY bath bomb party attendees can bring a set of their own.

You’ll also need to set out the bath bomb recipe instruction sheets and some pens. In addition, I also included a roll of masking tape for everyone to tape their bath bomb molds closed together once they were made for easier transport home.

Step Six

It’s finally time to get your party on! Once everyone arrives for the party I recommend kicking things off with light appetizers or a cheese tray and some wine or sangria. Unless of course you’re hosting a teenage DIY bath bomb party. In which case you could whip up one or two pitcher mocktails just for fun!

Once everyone has had a chance to get settled in, do a meet and greet to get comfortable. Then pass out the instruction sheets, kits and pens to each party guest. Go over the basics of making their bath bombs then instruct the group as begin the fun filled journey of making their very own DIY bath bombs!

Once everyone had completed their individual bath bombs at my party, my guests also combined the leftover bath bomb mix they’d made into layers into a popsicle mold to make unicorn horn bath bombs. These made for some really creative unicorn horn bath bombs especially since everyone chose different additives and fragrances.

I unmolded the unicorn bath bombs the next morning – you do need to give these a solid tap to get them out – and distributed them among my friends in attendance the next time I saw them.

If there’s time after everyone has made their bath bombs and not everyone is ready to rush off, then I recommend relaxing with a fun party game afterwards! My friends and I recently had a ton of fun playing Exploding Kittens with the first expansion pack, Imploding Kittens, after a DIY Nail Polish Craft & Cocktail Night.

Ready to jump right into creating your own unicorn inspired eyeshadow? There are a few things you’ll need for this mineral makeup project.

DIY Unicorn Eyeshadow Ingredients & Materials:

I used the 10 ml black plastic jars with 3 dividers with black window lids from SKS Bottle & Packaging for my DIY unicorn shadow to keep the colors separate. However, you can mix all of the colors individually then fill an undivided jar in three sections of color. This will allow you to swipe all of the colors onto one brush at the same time to use as a highlighter.

You’ll also need an assortment of eye safe micas, fine silver rainbow cosmetic glitter and sericite to create your colors. I purchased these ingredients from Brambleberry.

And, to keep the colors together when pressed, improve glide and staying power, I also used isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol and dimethicone.

If you’d like your DIY unicorn eyeshadow scented, you’ll also need a skin safe fragrance oil. I used a rose quartz fragrance oil, also from Brambleberry, however you can use any fragrance oil you prefer. I recommend a skin safe fragrance oil with no vanilla content and that’s mostly clear without a heavy yellow cast.

Have everything you need? Let’s get started! You’ll find the mineral makeup recipes for each of the colors for your DIY unicorn eyeshadow below. I used .15CC scoops for all of the dry measurements indicated and a graduated transfer pipette to measure out the liquid ingredients in drops.

Pink Shimmer Eyeshadow Ingredients:

8 scoops sericite
16 scoops rose pearl mica
8 scoops super pearly white mica
20 scoops fine silver rainbow eco-glitter

12 drops isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol
16 drops dimethicone
5 drops rose quartz fragrance oil

Purple Shimmer Eyeshadow Ingredients:

8 scoops sericite
8  scoops mauvey gem mica
8 scoops amethyst purple mica
8 scoops super pearly white mica
20 scoops fine silver rainbow eco-glitter

12 drops isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol
16 drops dimethicone
5 drops rose quartz fragrance oil

Blue Shimmer Eyeshadow Ingredients:

8 scoops sericite
16  scoops cellini blue mica
8 scoops super pearly white mica
20 scoops fine silver rainbow eco-glitter

12 drops isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol
16 drops dimethicone
5 drops rose quartz fragrance oil

Instructions:

Begin by cutting out a small piece of cardboard that fits into the cavities of your container. You can do this by tracing a circle around the jar, then cutting it out slightly inside the circle you drew so that it fits inside the jar. Then cut the circle into three equal parts that match the cavities of your container. Trim them down slightly until each fits inside a cavity.

Next, you’ll make the eyeshadow colors for your DIY unicorn eyeshadow. To do this, start with your first color recipe. Begin with the sericite, adding 8 scoops of the ingredient to a small dish or shallow bowl. (My scoops were not exact. I used slightly rounded scoops for each ingredient.)

Learn how to make your own scented DIY unicorn eyeshadow. This fun trio of scented pressed eyeshadows offers lasting pastel color and shimmer that’s perfect for eyes. Once you’ve mastered these colors, be sure to try out your own custom DIY unicorn eyeshadow in custom colors and scents!

Follow with the micas, then mix well using a toothpick or other small utensil.

Now add the glitter and remix until all of the dry ingredients are fully incorporated into the shadow.

Once you’ve mixed the dry ingredients, use a dropper to add the rubbing alcohol, dimethicone and the fragrance oil. Mix well with a toothpick until the eyeshadow is evenly coated with the wet ingredients.

Fill one of the cavities of your eyeshadow pan with the shadow, piling it into a mound. Gently press the shadow down with your finger just until the eyeshadow is about even with the top of the jar.

Next, wrap one of the small pieces of cardboard you cut out in a piece of thin linen or wax paper.

Press the wrapped cardboard on top of the shadow into your cavity with as much force as possible, then gently remove the wrapped cardboard. Your first color is now complete!

Simply follow the same process with your remaining scented DIY unicorn eyeshadow colors until your tri-color eyeshadow pan is full.

Let your scented unicorn eyeshadow rest overnight. They’re then ready to use the next day!

To use your scented DIY unicorn eyeshadow, apply as desired with an eyeshadow brush over your favorite eyeshadow primer for long lasting shimmer and color.

Can I sell my eyeshadows?

If you are wanting to sell your scented DIY unicorn eyeshadow palettes, there are a few things you should be aware of first. Currently glitter, mica-based pearlescent pigments, and other composite pigments used in cosmetics are NOT FDA approved for cosmetics.

The FDA is currently exercising discretionary enforcement of these color additives while they are in discussion over regulatory status and safety. You can find further discussion on this at Marie Gale’s blog here. Marie Gale is author of the book, Soap and Cosmetic Labeling: How to Follow the Rules and Regs Explained in Plain English, which I highly recommend for anyone selling handcrafted cosmetic and skin care products.

While this glitter is non-toxic, it’s important to note that this is not a cosmetic glitter and therefore it should not be used on lips and eyes. Instead, stick to applying this DIY unicorn body glitter to your body and hair. (Don’t want to make it? You can shop for pre-made cosmetic unicorn glitter mixes on Etsy here.)

As this glitter is larger than cosmetic glitter, it can cause damage if used around eyes or on eyelids. So while this DIY unicorn body glitter may look fabulous on your face, it’s not worth the risk of getting glitter in your eyes! (I got a speck of glitter in my eye on accident in the midst of painting and applying glitter to unicorns and it actually tore my contact lens.)

How to Throw a Unicorn Party!

Whether you’re planning a unicorn party for a child or simply a crazy fun cocktail party for adults, here’s how to throw a unicorn party that everyone will love!

How to Throw a Unicorn Party! Whether you're planning a party for a child or simply a crazy fun cocktail party for adults, here's how to throw a unicorn party that everyone will love!

My friend Cathy and I have birthdays just three days apart. Cathy really wanted to have a birthday party for our 42nd birthdays. So I threw her a unicorn party! While unicorn cakes and other crazy rainbow colored desserts are fab, we got back in touch with our inner child a bit for this birthday and instead painted paper mache unicorns!

Following are some of the photographs from our unicorn birthday party as well as a tutorial on hacking mini party hats into unicorn party hats, what you’ll need to paint your own unicorns, a pitcher margarita recipe (Cathy LOVES margaritas!) and ideas for unicorn party favors.

DIY Unicorn Party Hats

To create my DIY unicorn party hats, I hacked some mini pineapple party hats that I found at Target.

I used Krylon Short Cuts Spray Paint, a glitter set, and a clear acrylic sealer to transform them.

I placed all of the hats onto cardboard outside and sprayed each one a solid color with the spray paint. I painted four purple hats, four black hats and four blue hats.

After painting each color I threw/tossed/sprinkled different glitters into the wet paint.

I then went back and painted “highlights” of other colors onto each hat in a strip or along one side. So, for example, a black hat got sprayed with purple paint and a purple hat with black and/or blue.

I then threw/tossed/sprinkled additional glitter into the freshly spray wet paint.

Once that paint dried, I sprayed each unicorn party hat with a clear acrylic sealer to reduce glitter fall out.

Then I completed the hats by sticking the “pineapple” green tops into each hat. This step of course is optional.

All in all these unicorn party hats took no time to paint and decorate as there was no glue involved. (This is Cathy! She’s AMAZING!)

Paint your own unicorns!

When you’re turning 42 your birthday gifts are your friends and the many blessings you’ve accumulated throughout your life rather than physical gifts. So my gift to my friends for celebrating my life with me – and Cathy! – were these fun paper mache unicorns we all got to paint!

I picked up these paper mache unicorns from Target – one for every guest – and an assortment of paints, brushes and 0f course, glitter! I went a little crazy with Target’s Kid Made Modern line.

Supplies you’ll need for you and your guests to paint their own unicorns are: paper mache unicorns, acrylic paints, Krylon Short Cuts Spray Paint, glitter, Mod Podge and/or Elmer’s Craft Bond Fabric and Paper Glue, patterned tissue paper, stickers, small embellishments, Sharpie Paint Markers, foam and bristle paint brushes, small bowls or dishes to mix paint in, water glass with water for rinsing out brushes, and napkins or paper towels for drying brushes.

As my house is small and glitter is crazy messy even without margaritas, we had the painting portion of the unicorn party outside on my patio table. The party started at 8pm so I wrapped weather resistant white string LED lights around the patio railing, lit hand poured citronella outdoor candles, and turned the porch light on. It worked out beautifully!

And everyone painted really creative and amazing unicorns!

The food, of course, was my dog Jasper’s favorite part of the night.

For the pitcher margaritas I used a variation of a recipe I found on Mouth.com as I already had a bottle of Fruitlab Orange Liqueur from a prior purchase.

Pitcher Margarita Recipe

32 oz. Jose Cuervo Especial
12 oz. Fruitlab Orange Liqueur
16 oz. lime juice
4 oz. Tres Agaves Organic Agave Nectar

Instructions:

Combine all ingredients in a gallon sized pitcher. Mix well, then fill the pitcher the rest of the way up with ice.

Create a drink station with your margarita glasses, a bowl of ice, lime wedges and a plate with margarita salt.

Adult guests can make their own drinks as it suits them. If salt is desired on the rim, they simply run a wedge of lime along the rim of the glass, then turn it upside down and press it into the salt!
