How to Throw a Unicorn Party!

Whether you’re planning a unicorn party for a child or simply a crazy fun cocktail party for adults, here’s how to throw a unicorn party that everyone will love!

How to Throw a Unicorn Party! Whether you're planning a party for a child or simply a crazy fun cocktail party for adults, here's how to throw a unicorn party that everyone will love!

My friend Cathy and I have birthdays just three days apart. Cathy really wanted to have a birthday party for our 42nd birthdays. So I threw her a unicorn party! While unicorn cakes and other crazy rainbow colored desserts are fab, we got back in touch with our inner child a bit for this birthday and instead painted paper mache unicorns!

How to throw a unicorn party! Pair a paint your own unicorn paint project with fun DIY unicorn party hats and unicorn party favors for a magical event!

Following are some of the photographs from our unicorn birthday party as well as a tutorial on hacking mini party hats into unicorn party hats, what you’ll need to paint your own unicorns, a pitcher margarita recipe (Cathy LOVES margaritas!) and ideas for unicorn party favors.

DIY Unicorn Party Hats

DIY Unicorn Party Hat Hack! These mini pineapple party hats were transformed to dreamy unicorn colors with spray paint and glitter!

To create my DIY unicorn party hats, I hacked some mini pineapple party hats that I found at Target.

DIY Unicorn Party Hat Hack! These mini pineapple party hats were transformed to dreamy unicorn colors with spray paint and glitter!

I used Krylon Short Cuts Spray Paint, a glitter set, and a clear acrylic sealer to transform them.

I placed all of the hats onto cardboard outside and sprayed each one a solid color with the spray paint. I painted four purple hats, four black hats and four blue hats.

After painting each color I threw/tossed/sprinkled different glitters into the wet paint.

I then went back and painted “highlights” of other colors onto each hat in a strip or along one side. So, for example, a black hat got sprayed with purple paint and a purple hat with black and/or blue.

I then threw/tossed/sprinkled additional glitter into the freshly spray wet paint.

Once that paint dried, I sprayed each unicorn party hat with a clear acrylic sealer to reduce glitter fall out.

Then I completed the hats by sticking the “pineapple” green tops into each hat. This step of course is optional.

All in all these unicorn party hats took no time to paint and decorate as there was no glue involved. (This is Cathy! She’s AMAZING!)

Paint your own unicorns!

When you’re turning 42 your birthday gifts are your friends and the many blessings you’ve accumulated throughout your life rather than physical gifts. So my gift to my friends for celebrating my life with me – and Cathy! – were these fun paper mache unicorns we all got to paint!

I picked up these paper mache unicorns from Target – one for every guest – and an assortment of paints, brushes and 0f course, glitter! I went a little crazy with Target’s Kid Made Modern line.

How to throw a unicorn party! Pair a paint your own unicorn paint project with fun DIY unicorn party hats and unicorn party favors for a magical event!

Supplies you’ll need for you and your guests to paint their own unicorns are: paper mache unicorns, acrylic paints, Krylon Short Cuts Spray Paint, glitter, Mod Podge and/or Elmer’s Craft Bond Fabric and Paper Glue, patterned tissue paper, stickers, small embellishments, Sharpie Paint Markers, foam and bristle paint brushes, small bowls or dishes to mix paint in, water glass with water for rinsing out brushes, and napkins or paper towels for drying brushes.

As my house is small and glitter is crazy messy even without margaritas, we had the painting portion of the unicorn party outside on my patio table. The party started at 8pm so I wrapped weather resistant white string LED lights around the patio railing, lit hand poured citronella outdoor candles, and turned the porch light on. It worked out beautifully!

And everyone painted really creative and amazing unicorns!

The food, of course, was my dog Jasper’s favorite part of the night.

For the pitcher margaritas I used a variation of a recipe I found on Mouth.com as I already had a bottle of Fruitlab Orange Liqueur from a prior purchase.

Pitcher Margarita Recipe

32 oz. Jose Cuervo Especial
12 oz. Fruitlab Orange Liqueur
16 oz. lime juice
4 oz. Tres Agaves Organic Agave Nectar

Instructions:

Combine all ingredients in a gallon sized pitcher. Mix well, then fill the pitcher the rest of the way up with ice.

Create a drink station with your margarita glasses, a bowl of ice, lime wedges and a plate with margarita salt.

Adult guests can make their own drinks as it suits them. If salt is desired on the rim, they simply run a wedge of lime along the rim of the glass, then turn it upside down and press it into the salt!

DIY Party Hat Hack! These mini pineapple party hats were transformed to dreamy unicorn colors with spray paint and glitter!

It’s my birthday! And as a fellow soaper and facebook friend so eloquently put it, it’s my double 21st birthday! Can’t complain about that. I have super awesome friends, I’m doing what I love for a living, I have a shiny new husband and all my needs are met. So this is indeed a wonderful birthday. (It also doesn’t hurt that I can get away looking quite a few years younger.)

So, I don’t normally have a birthday party for myself, but this year I am throwing a birthday party not only for myself, but also for my dear friend, Cathy, who’s birthday is just three short days after mine. We are both turning 42 and know each other from all the way back in junior high school. We’re having a few good friends over for pitcher margaritas and to paint paper mache unicorns. Because, why not?

DIY Party Hat Hack! These mini pineapple party hats were transformed to dreamy unicorn colors with spray paint and glitter!

Last night I took time out to hack these mini pineapple party hats into some super amazing unicorn inspired glitter glam party hats using some Krylon Short Cuts Spray Paint, this glitter set, and a clear acrylic sealer. Aren’t they fun?

I’ve also been playing around with some free printable unicorn stickers I found via Pinterest, painting the borders with ella + milla Elite Drippin’ Gold glitter nail polish. I’m debating grabbing some plastic Solo cups last minute and adding the stickers to those, but they could end up as cupcake toppers as well.

Dr. Harvey's Herbal Multi-Vitamin + Mineral Supplement for Dogs! This powdered whole food multi-vitamin is made in the USA with no synthetic ingredients of any kind. Simply add powder to your dog's food daily to encourage optimal health! My dog LOVES this stuff!

All of that awesome aside, I am also in the midst of a free trial to Thrive Market. Not only did I discover and fall in love with Vigilant Eats Goji Cacao Superfood Cereal, but I also gave Dr. Harvey’s Canine Multi-Vitamins a try for my dog, Jasper. I didn’t realize when I bought it that it’s actually a powder and not a soft chew like I was expecting. But surprisingly Jasper absolutely LOVES this stuff. And as he’s aging – he’ll be 9 in August – I’m more careful about his dietary and health needs.

And, both because Jasper simply loves this stuff and he’s starting to get arthritis in his front knees, I’m going to purchase Dr. Harvey’s Canine Ortho-Flex Vitamins the next time around.

I got married!

Well, a LOT has happened since last week. This past Wednesday I got married! It was a super simple affair that took place in around 60 seconds in my living room, but it all also happened rather quickly. Rick, my new husband, was at one point my ex-fiance. But life sometimes pulls you in crazy directions for a reason and within a week we’d made the decision to get married. We mostly told everyone after the event, but we are planning a wedding reception a month or two down the road so friends and family can come celebrate. I’m super stoked though and crazy happy.

Outdoor patio dining furniture from Target! I love this new outdoor dining space!

My marriage came with stepkids who are pretty frickin’ awesome. Thursday Hannah (who’s 11) and Isaac (who’s 13) helped me pull together this awesome outdoor dining space for us to enjoy as a new family. (I bought the entire set at Target.)

And today Hannah painted a kick ass paper mache unicorn from Target’s Kid Made Modern line. (There’s also a third, Abbie, who’s currently planning for college, but we only have every other weekend.)

Rose Gold Bar Cart

I also got my hands on a bar cart – finally! – that I’d been lusting after forever. It finally went on sale and once I bought it it promptly sold out. I splurged a little on a set of matching copper martini glasses and rose flowers also from Target and a really nice Prince of Scots Professional Serie Boston Style Cocktail Shaker Set from Amazon. I still have to dig through Pinterest for some ideas on styling a bar cart though. Currently the bottom shelf is completely empty.

Unicorn Macaron Soap Tutorial

Made using melt and pour soap bases, my unicorn macaron soap tutorial will guide you through the steps of making your own unicorn macaron soaps! Just melt, pour then paint your soaps for a sweet homemade gift!

Supplies Needed:

Learn how to make unicorn macaron soap with this cute unicorn macaron soap mold and a tutorial from Soap Deli News blog.

You will need at least one unicorn macaron mold to create your unicorn macaron soap. I bought three of the molds (pictured above) from Sugar Skull Molds here.

(Note that if you buy any three molds from Sugar Skull Molds you will get a fourth one free. You will need to type in the fourth mold that you’d like to receive free in the notes when you check out. Otherwise a random mold will be chosen for you. Also, in addition to the unicorn macaron soap mold, Sugar Skull Molds also sells several other unicorn molds that you can find here.)

You will also need a white melt and pour soap base, a clear melt and pour soap base, your choice of fragrance oils or essential oils (if you’d like to scent your soap), a digital scale, isopropyl (rubbing alcohol), skin safe mica powders, skin safe glitter, liquid neon pink soap color, a spray bottle, Pyrex measuring cups, a round silicone soap mold, a microwave and stirring utensils. Cutting boards are also useful.

Learn how to make these sweet unicorn soaps with my unicorn macaron soap tutorial! Made using a melt and pour soap base, my unicorn macaron soap tutorial will guide you through the steps of making your own unicorn macaron soaps! Just melt, pour then paint your soaps for a sweet homemade gift!

To create my unicorn macaron soaps, I specifically used the blue vibrance mica and the pink vibrance mica from Nurture Soap. For the sparkle you can use either Nurture Soap’s twinkling lights glitter or super sparkles mica. The shimmer gold mica is also a nice choice if you prefer a gold horn.

The amount of soap and other materials you’ll need will depend on how many unicorn macaron soaps you plan to make at one time. However, I’ll explain how to figure out the amounts you’ll need as we go through the tutorial!

Ready to get started?

Step One: Make the unicorn macaron soap embeds!

Unicorn Macaron Soap Tutorial from Soap Deli News blog!

You’ll begin by making the unicorn macaron soap embeds for your soap. You’ll use around .45 oz. of white soap base for each unicorn macaron soap embed that you want to make. If you want to make three at a time, then you would multiply .45 oz. by 3 to give you the amount of soap you need. So .45 oz. x 3 = 1.35 oz. soap base.

Then, to figure the amount of fragrance oil you need to scent your soap, you’d multiply the amount of soap you’ll be using for the embeds by the percentage of fragrance oil or essential oil you’d like to scent your soap with. I recommend using fragrance oils at 2-4% or essential oil at .5-1%. However, you should also check with manufacturer guidelines to be safe so you are not exceeding the maximum usage rate for your product. So 1.35 oz. x .02 (or 2%) = .027 oz. fragrance oil.

It’s also important to note that if you’d like your unicorn macaron soap embeds to be a bright white, avoid any fragrances that contain vanilla or have a deep yellow tint. You can also simply leave your unicorn macaron soap embed unscented.

Additionally, not all melt and pour soap bases weigh the same amount – especially from brand to brand. So you may want to melt a random amount of base and pour into it one of the unicorn macaron molds, let it harden, then unmold and weigh it to determine the correct amount of soap you need for each embed. I recommend using slightly more soap base than what is called for as some inevitably ends up stuck to the side of the container(s.)

Now that you’ve figured out the amount of white soap base you need, you’re ready to create your unicorn macaron soap embeds.

How to make unicorn macaron soap.

Using a digital scale, weigh out the amount of white soap base needed to create your embeds, then cut the base into chunks.

Heat the base in the microwave in 20-30 second increments until melted. You’ll want to stir the base in between each heating session.

Now weigh out the fragrance or essential oil (if desired) that you need for the amount of soap base you are using and stir into the melted soap.

Unicorn Macaron Soap Tutorial

Now pour the melted white soap base into the unicorn macaron soap molds.

Unicorn Macaron Soap Tutorial

I recommend placing the molds between two cutting boards (of even height) to keep them from tipping (as pictured.)

Carefully pour the melted white soap base into the molds, then spritz the tops of the soap with rubbing alcohol to remove any air bubbles.

Unicorn Macaron Soap Tutorial

Allow the unicorn macaron soap embeds to harden completely, then carefully push each one out of the mold. You can freeze your molds first if you have trouble getting your soap out.

Carefully clean up the edges of your embeds with a sharp knife or the edge of your fingernail if needed. Set aside.

Step Two: Make the pink round soaps!

Unicorn Macaron Soap Tutorial

Now you’ll make the round pink soap bars that your unicorn macaron soap embeds will be placed on.

I used a Crafter’s Choice basic round silicone soap mold for this step. If you don’t own this mold you can use a similar round silicone soap mold.

If you want a bold pink round soap, use a clear melt and pour soap base for this step. Otherwise, if you’d like a pastel pink round soap, use a white melt and pour soap base.

Each of these cavities holds around 5 oz. of soap base. However, you may want to want to melt a random amount of base and pour the melted base into one of your mold’s cavities, let it harden, then unmold the soap to be sure of the the amount of soap you need for each bar.

However, it’s important to note that you aren’t filling the cavities for this soap mold to the top. Instead you’ll be leaving room at the top for the unicorn macaron soap embeds and additional soap to hold the embeds in place.

For each of my pink round soap bars, I used 4.55 oz. of white melt and pour soap base.

Weigh out the amount of soap you’ll need then cut the soap base into chunks. Heat to melt, then add the color and mix well. I recommend starting with a small amount of color and then adding more as needed until you reach your desired color.

If you’re scenting your soaps, figure the amount of fragrance needed for the amount of soap you are using. Then weigh out the fragrance and stir into the melted soap base.

Unicorn Macaron Soap Tutorial

Now slowly pour the melted pink soap base into each of the mold’s cavities (based on the number of unicorn macaron soap bars you are making) and spritz the tops of each with rubbing alcohol to remove any air bubbles.

Set the soap aside to cool and fully harden.

Once the soap has fully set up, you’re ready for the next step!

Step Three: Combine the elements!

Unicorn Macaron Soap Tutorial

You’ll now cut and melt a clear melt and pour soap base to adhere your unicorn macaron soap embeds to your pink round soap bars!

For each soap bar you’ll need about .5 oz. of clear melt and pour soap base. Determine the amount of soap base you’ll need for the number of bars you are making. If you’re using a fragrance or essential oil, do the math to figure the amount you’ll need for it as well.

Now weigh out the amount of clear soap base you need. Cut it into chunks then heat and melt in the microwave.

If using a fragrance, weigh out the amount needed and stir into the melted soap base.

Unicorn Macaron Soap Tutorial

Next, add a small amount of twinkling lights glitter (or similar) to the melted clear soap base and stir to incorporate.

Now spritz the tops of your pink soap bars with rubbing alcohol.

Pour a small amount of the clear melted soap base onto each of the pink soap bars in your mold and gently press each of your unicorn macaron soap embeds onto each of the pink soap bars.

Unicorn Macaron Soap Tutorial

Position the soap embeds in the center of each of the soaps, then pour the remaining soap base around the unicorn macaron soap embeds. Stop pouring just before you reach the top edge of the embeds so part of the embeds is still sticking out from the soap.

Unicorn Macaron Soap Tutorial

Now spritz the tops of the soaps with rubbing alcohol to remove any air bubbles.

Allow the soap to fully harden and set up.

Step Four: Paint on the details!

Unicorn Macaron Soap Tutorial

Once the soaps have set up fully in the molds, carefully remove each of the soaps from the mold cavities.

You’ll now use your micas and/or glitter combined with rubbing alcohol to paint the faces onto your unicorn macaron soaps!

In small containers, combine a small amount of rubbing alcohol with a small amount of your micas. Mix to combine. You want the mica to be thick enough to be opaque when painted on, but just thin enough that it doesn’t clump. I used pink mica for the mouth, ears and cheeks and blue mica for the horn and eyes.

Unicorn Macaron Soap Tutorial

Using a paint brush, paint on the cheeks, mouth and the insides of the ears in your desired color. Don’t worry if you mess up. Simply wipe off the mica with a cloth or paper towel and a small amount of rubbing alcohol.

Now, using a dry brush, dab the twinkling lights glitter into the unicorn cheeks. (Alternately you can also mix the pink mica with a bit of super sparkles mica just for the cheeks.)

Unicorn Macaron Soap Tutorial

Now using the blue mica and alcohol mix, paint on the eyes and paint the horn.

Using a dry brush, dab the twinkling lights glitter into the blue mica on the unicorn horn. (Alternately you can also mix the blue mica with a bit of super sparkles mica just for the horns.)

By now most of us have seen the hilarious Squatty Potty YouTube video portraying unicorns pooping rainbow ice cream. And Rosanna Pansino making those super cute, unicorn rainbow poop cookies on her YouTube channel here. (I LOVE her cookbook, Nerdy Nummies!) Well, my rainbow moldable sugar scrub recipe is inspired by these amazing representations of unicorns doing their thing! I hope you have as much fun making this project it as I did! After all, everyone knows unicorns poop rainbows!

My shimmering rainbow moldable sugar scrub recipe combines primarily natural ingredients so it’s suitable for even sensitive skin. One of these ingredients is extra virgin chia seed oil. With natural anti-inflammatory benefits, chia seed oil also helps to hydrate skin, improve elasticity, and encourage regeneration of skin cells. It is suitable for all skin types, but is especially wonderful for dry, sensitive, and maturing skin.

A treat for both kids and adults at bath time, my unicorn inspired rainbow moldable sugar scrub recipe creates a unique product that’s great for gifting. After all, everyone needs a little sparkle in their life from time to time!

Begin by weighing out the cocoa butter, shea butter and emulsifying wax into a large glass Pyrex measuring cup or similar. Heat at 50% power in a microwave until melted. (Alternately you may also use a double boiler.)

Weigh out the melt and pour soap base and cut into small chunks. Stir into the melted butters and wax until melted. You can reheat if necessary to continue melting the soap base.

While these ingredients are still hot, weigh out the xanthan gum powder and whisk into the melted ingredients until it has dissolved.

Next, you’ll weigh out the remaining oils and glycerin. Combine the chia seed oil, castor oil, essential or fragrance oil and vegetable glycerin in the bowl with the previously melted ingredients and stir well.

In a separate container, weigh out the kaolin clay and sugar. Mix to combine.

Now pour the clay and sugar mixture into the liquid ingredients and mix well.

Set the mixture aside until it starts to thicken then remix with a spoon or spatula.

Now mix the sugar scrub mixture using a KitchenAid stand mixer as it continues to thicken.

You can place the sugar scrub mixture in the refrigerator to speed up the cooling process if desired.

Once the mixture begins to look white and a little fluffy – kind of like marshmallow fluff – remove the mixing bowl from the stand mixer base and place it briefly in the fridge.

When sugar scrub starts to feel as if it’s hardening, remove it from the refrigerator.

Remix the sugar scrub mixture with your hands. Your body heat will make the sugar scrub pliable sort of like Play-doh.

Divide the sugar scrub “dough” into six balls.

You’re now ready to create your rainbow of colors for your own rainbow colored moldable sugar scrub!

You’ll start by adding one of your colorants to the first ball of sugar scrub “dough.” Add just a little at a time, kneading well to incorporate the color. Once you’ve reached the desired color intensity, slowly add a small amount of super sparkles mica to the colored sugar scrub and knead it into the mixture. Keep adding the mica until the ball of sugar scrub “dough” reaches the level of sparkle desired.

Now repeat the process with the remaining sections of sugar scrub using a different color for each section. Divide and roll each ball of colored sugar scrub “dough” into two’s and set aside. If your sugar scrub gets too sticky while you are working you can simply step away and let the sugar scrub harden back up.

Now pat both sets of each of your six colors into flat rounds, just smaller than the diameter of the jar.

Layer one each of the colors into each of your two jars, pressing each layer down into the jar as you go until you’ve used all of the sugar scrub mixture.

If desired, you can add an additional sprinkle of Super Sparkle mica powder to the tops of your moldable sugar scrubs.

Finally, screw on the lids to your jars and add a fun label! (I used extra sugar scrub “dough” for my rainbow moldable sugar scrub pictured here for photography purposes only. Evenly divided into two jars, your rainbow moldable sugar scrub should all be contained within each jar.)

To use simply scoop out desired amount and massage onto wet skin as you would a solid sugar scrub cube.
