Make Your Own DIY Body Spray for Fall

I love fragrances. Unfortunately, it’s rare that I can shell out $40+ for a designer fragrance. Body sprays, on the other hand, are a budget friendly splurge. Body sprays tend to cost less than designer perfumes. Therefore I’m comfortable with using them everyday. There’s no need to ration out my favorite scents so they last longer. However, as I often have an arsenal of essential oils stashed in a cabinet for my natural skin care recipes, I really enjoy making my own seasonal DIY body sprays.

Benefits of Making Essential Oil Body Sprays

There are a number of benefits to making my own custom scented DIY body sprays with essential oils. Obviously I don’t need to worry about the potentially toxic ingredients hidden in proprietary perfume formulations made with fragrance oils. Instead, I’m able to create unique scents using plant-based essential oils.

Custom DIY body sprays with essential oils are also incredibly easy to make. Plus, with the holidays quickly approaching, I’m able to make multiple body sprays at once. One for me, and then several more to gift to friends and family. All at the same time and all in under 15 minutes.

I also love that I can use my favorite essential oil diffuser blends and recipes in my body spray recipes. So rather than hunting for essential oil blend recipes all over the internet, I’m able to work with what I have on hand at home.

How to Make A Pumpkin Spice Body Spray

While this easy pumpkin spice DIY body spray is perfect for fall, it also make a great DIY gift idea throughout the entire holiday season. Once you’ve made my pumpkin spice scented body spray, be sure to try it with other essential oil blends as well. It also works great with your favorite knock off designer fragrance oils!

Mermaid Shimmer Body Spray Recipe! This gorgeous mermaid shimmer body spray recipe leaves a touch of light reflecting, mica shimmer on skin so anyone feel like a mermaid for a day! Customize the recipe further with your own favorite scent. You can even use it in your hair!

No one wants to douse themselves in heavy, greasy feeling oils, especially in summer. So I formulated my mermaid shimmer body spray as a dry oil body spray. It sprays on and absorbs quickly so there’s greasy after feel. What’s left behind is soft, shimmering skin and a lovely fragrance!

Even better, this mermaid shimmer body spray is super easy to make. Just weigh, measure and mix the ingredients. Your final product is then ready in under ten minutes!

Ingredients:

.5 oz. rosehip seed oil
1 oz. clear jojoba oil
1.25 oz. fractionated coconut oil
1 oz. apricot kernel oil
.1 oz. skin safe fragrance oil
2 mL vitamin E oil (optional)
1/4 teaspoon cellini blue mica powder (or similar)
4 teaspoons super pearly white mica powder

Instructions:

You will need a digital scale and a set of measuring spoons for my mermaid shimmer body spray recipe. You’ll also need a graduated plastic transfer pipette to measure out the vitamin E oil.

Begin by weighing out the rosehip seed oil, jojoba  oil, fractionated coconut oil and apricot kernel oil. Combine in a glass beaker or a glass Pyrex measuring cup. Stir to combine.

Now weigh out your fragrance oil of choice and mix into the container of oils. I used a Citrus Blossoms & Heliotrope fragrance oil for my mermaid shimmer body spray recipe.

Using a graduated plastic transfer pipette, measure out the vitamin E oil and stir in. (Learn more about vitamin E oil and its use in DIY skin care here.)

Next, using a teaspoon measurement, measure out the micas and add to the oils. Stir vigorously until the mica is fully incorporated into the dry body oil base. There shouldn’t be any clumps and the color should be uniform throughout.

Note: Swap out the cellini blue mica for another color to customize the final color of your mermaid shimmer body spray! And don’t worry. This color won’t translate onto your skin.

Tip: If you’d also like to include glitter in your mermaid shimmer body spray, you can add glitter as well. However, you’ll need a very fine glitter that is .004″ in size so it doesn’t clog the sprayer.

Once combined, use a funnel to fill one 4 oz. bottle with a mist sprayer. (I used the 4 oz. Frosted PET Cosmo Round Bottles with White Fine Mist Sprayers and Brushed Aluminum Collars from SKS Bottle & Packaging found here.)

Screw on the sprayer then label your bottle as desired for personal use or gifting. (I made a sticker for mine by printing mermaid cat clipart from LePetite Market onto sticker paper.)

If you’d rather make my mermaid shimmer body spray recipe to sell, you’ll need to follow FDA guidelines for labeling your product. If you’re unsure about the rules and regulations regarding labeling cosmetics, I highly recommend the book, Soap and Cosmetic Labeling: How to Follow the Rules and Regs Explained in Plain English, by Marie Gale.

To use, simply shake the bottle to remix the ingredients (the mica will settle) then spray onto skin and massage in.

This scented DIY dry oil body spray for dry skin is made with natural “dry” oils that won’t leave your skin feeling greasy, but still nourish and moisturize skin in need. The addition of a fragrance means you can wear your favorite scent while still caring for your skin!

This scented DIY dry oil body spray for dry skin is made with natural "dry" oils that won't leave your skin feeling greasy but still nourish and moisturize skin in need. The addition of a fragrance means you can wear your favorite scent while still caring for your skin!

While fractionated coconut oil is often used in dry oil formulations, a lot of people with sensitive skin find coconut oil drying or irritating. Because of this, I chose to formulate my scented DIY dry oil body spray with camellia (tea) seed oil instead of coconut oil.

Like fractionated coconut oil, camellia seed oil is liquid at room temperature and has a long shelf life. When used in skin care applications, camellia seed oil can help to improve both the tone and texture of skin as well as reduce the appearance of aging. Camellia seed oil is also wonderful for hydration and is quickly and easily absorbed so that skin feels silky smooth, not greasy.

This DIY dry oil body spray is super easy to make and it’s perfect to gift for Mother’s Day. I’ve even included printable labels to make gifting even easier! Ingredients:

2.5 oz. camellia seed oil
.75 oz. rosehip seed oil
.5 oz. jojoba oil
.1 oz. babassu oil
.1 oz. skin safe fragrance oil

Instructions:

You will need a digital scale to weigh out the ingredients for my DIY dry oil body spray. In addition, you will also need two 2 oz. amber PET Boston round bottle with a smooth black fine mist sprayer. You can find the same bottles with sprayers that I used at SKS Bottle & Packaging.

If you have leftover tea infused camellia seed oil from my coffee & black tea under eye cream recipe, you can use that in place of regular camellia seed oil.

To create your DIY dry body oil spray, begin by weighing out all of the ingredients into a glass Pyrex measuring cup or similar.

Mix well to combine.

Then, using a small funnel, evenly fill both containers with the dry oil body spray.

Cap the lids on tightly, then download the labels for your DIY dry oil body spray here.

Print the labels onto a full size label sheet. Then cut out the labels individually and apply to your bottles. (If you’d like die-cut sticker labels that don’t require any cutting, I recommend checking out the label options at StickerYou. StickerYou allows you to custom design your own labels, that they then print and cut for you to save time!)

That’s it! Your scented DIY dry oil body spray is now ready for personal use or gifting! To use, simply spray onto clean skin and massage in.

Alternately, if you plan to sell your coffee & black tea under eye cream, you’ll need to follow FDA guidelines for labeling your product. This shea butter body spray recipe is fantastic for dry skin! Made with moisturizing shea nut oil and neem oil, which helps to promote healing, this shea butter body spray leaves skin feeling silky smooth and soft and can be custom scented with your favorite fragrance.

What is shea nut oil?

Shea nut oil is a liquid oil that is derived from cold pressing the nut seed of the shea (karite) tree and is a byproduct of shea butter production where the pressing of the seeds produces a fractionated oil. When applied to skin, shea nut oil leaves skin feeling smooth and healthy. In addition, it’s been shown to help with such skin conditions such as dermatitis, eczema, burns and cutaneous dryness as well as other skin irritations. Shea nut oil also acts as a wonderful protective agent against harsh weather conditions.

What is neem oil?

Neem oil is a carrier oil that is commonly used in creams, dental products, and hair care products and is often used to treat problematic skin conditions. It possesses both moisturizing and regenerative properties and is rich in natural vitamin E, and essential fatty acids. While neem oil, as a stand alone product, has a strong odor, this scent is easily masked with natural essential oils or fragrance oils. This oil is naturally anti-bacterial, antiviral and antifungal and it can significantly help those suffering from skin conditions such as eczema and rosacea.
