How to Make DIY Bath Melts with Soy Wax

Natural soy wax is a wonderful ingredient not only for making your own DIY candles, but also for use in natural skin care products. Since soy wax is used for making homemade massage candles it made perfect sense to me to use this wax to make all natural bath melts in my DIY bath melts with lavender essential oils. Not only is soy wax an inexpensive alternative to beeswax, it also has a much lower melting point – right around 120° F – which makes it perfect for utilizing in your own DIY bath melts.

Ingredients:

40 grams natural soy wax
11 grams ultra refined shea butter
30 grams refined and deodorized cocoa butter
22 grams grapeseed oil
1 gram lavender (or other) essential oil (or 2 grams fragrance oil)

Instructions:

I molded my DIY bath melts with lavender essential oil in a Silikomart Silicone Chocolate Flower Mold. This easy bath melts recipe will fill all the cavities in one of these molds and yields fifteen flower shaped, lavender scented bath melts.

To make these soy wax bath melts, begin by weighing out the soy wax, cocoa butter and shea butter using a digital kitchen scale then combine these ingredients together in a small to medium sized glass pyrex measuring cup. Heat at 50% in the microwave until melted, then weigh out the grapeseed oil and essential oil and mix into the wax and butters. (Alternately, you may also use a double boiler.)

Carefully pour the now liquid DIY bath melts into each cavity of the mold then allow to harden fully. (If you place this mold on a cutting board before pouring you can easily transfer the mold to the fridge after pouring to hasten the cooling process.) Once the lavender bath melts have solidified remove from the mold and store in an airtight container in a cool, dry location.

To use simply add one to two lavender bath melts to warm bath water or massage a melt onto your skin by hand when bathing in a bath or shower to soften and moisturize skin.

Bath and Body DIY - Natural Organic Bath Melts and Solid Sugar Scrub Cubes Recipes - Made with Rich Argan Oil, Cocoa Butter, Shea Butter, Kokum Butter and Coconut Oil

Ingredients:

5 oz. natural cocoa butter
1.5 oz. 76° melt point refined coconut oil
.5 oz. kokum butter
.5 oz. shea butter
.5 oz. argan oil
.04 oz. lemon verbena essential oil or essential oil of choice (or  .15 oz. lemon verbena fragrance oil)

Supplies:

digital kitchen scale
large glass pyrex measuring cup
metal spoon and knife
two silicone flower molds
containers with lids

Recipe Directions for Making Bath Melts:

(It’s important to note that these bath melts have a low melting point so they melt in bathwater. Therefore they need to be kept in a cool, temperature controlled environment.)

Ready to make my recipe for bath melts? Let’s get started!

Using a digital scale weigh out the cocoa butter, kokum butter and shea butter in a large glass pyrex measuring cup. Simply place the measuring cup on the scale, set to tare, then add your ingredients one at a time until the correct weight is reached.

Next, melt slowly in the microwave in 45 second increments until fully melted.

Now weigh out the coconut oil – this oil is solid at room temperature but melts at 76 degrees or when it comes in contact with skin – and stir into your butters until completely melted.

Follow by weighing the argan oil and adding it into the measuring cup. Now weigh out and  add your essential or fragrance oil of choice. Stir well, then slowly pour into two silicone flower molds. I recommend placing the molds on a small cutting board or other flat surface before pouring the liquid bath melts into the molds.

Once you’ve filled the molds, place them in the freezer for about 20 minutes to allow the bath melts to solidify. Then slowly push your completed bath melts out of the molds and package in your desired containers of choice. (You can half this recipe for bath melts if desired!)

DIY Natural Handmade Solid Sugar Scrub Cubes Recipe - Made Without A Glycerin Melt and Pour Soap Base

Lemon Verbena Solid Sugar Scrub Recipe

Ingredients:

5 oz. natural cocoa butter
1.5 oz. 76° melt point refined coconut oil
.5 oz. kokum butter
.5 oz. shea butter
.5 oz. argan oil
.04 oz. lemon verbena essential oil or essential oil of choice (or .15 oz. lemon verbena fragrance oil)
4 1/2 Cups white sugar

Supplies:

digital kitchen scale
large glass pyrex measuring cup
metal spoon and knife
four silicone flower molds
containers with lids

Recipe Directions for Making Solid Sugar Scrubs:

Feel free to halve this recipe if desired. This is basically the same recipe as my natural handmade bath melts but with a touch more fragrance and white sugar. Because of the sugar it makes twice as much as the bath melts recipe.

To make the handmade solid sugar scrub cubes, follow the instructions for making my recipe for bath melts. However, before you place into the molds, stir in 4 1/2 cups of sugar. Next, simply scoop the sugar scrub mixture into your molds pressing into the molds as you go. Once you’ve filled a mold, use the backside of a knife to scrape the excess sugar scrub from the top of the mold and level out the cavities. Place in freezer to allow to solidify then pop out after 20 minutes or so and package!

1 teaspoon organic lavender flowers
1 teaspoon organic chamomile flowers
12 drops organic lavender essential oil

First measure out one level half teaspoon of beeswax pellets or 1/4 tsp. of carnauba wax and place into a glass pyrex container. (Note that using up to 1 teaspoon of beeswax in order to keep solidity in warmer climates may make these more difficult to melt in bath water.)

Then weigh out 2 oz. each of cocoa butter and shea butter. Combine these ingredients in a glass container with your wax. Heat in the microwave at 50% power until full melted. (Use a pot holder when removing the glass container from the microwave as it will get very hot.) Stir. Add your essential oils.

Add the chamomile and lavender flowers to your melted butter and wax mixture and stir well.

Pour your liquid bath melt mixture into a clean, dry ice cube tray. It will serve as a simple and inexpensive mold as well as make removal of the bath melts from the molds a snap! Place the ice cube tray in the freezer until bath melts have fully solidified.

Once your organic lemon lavender bath melts have solidified, remove the ice cube tray from the freezer. Now simply twist the tray the same as you would ice to remove the bath melts. This recipe will yield five evenly sized bath melts. You can store these in a decorative 7 oz. glass pantry jar or an 8 oz. white plastic jar.

To use simply add one bath melt under hot running water to your bath. Alternatively, you can place one bath melt inside a small cotton muslin bag and add to hot bath while water is still running. Store in a cool, dry location. Materials for this project were purchased at Mountain Rose Herbs.
