Make this easy homemade baking soda and coconut oil face scrub recipe to help shrink pores and conquer blackheads!

Make this easy homemade baking soda and coconut oil face scrub recipe to help shrink pores and conquer blackheads while cleansing your face at the same time.

Baking soda has long been used as a home remedy to help tackle tough acne and pimples. This baking soda and coconut oil face scrub recipe takes that notion and adds naturally cleansing oils to help clean your skin and exfoliate it at the same time.

Keep in mind, though, that there are mixed reviews on using baking soda as a home remedy for acne. I’ve read a lot of both negative and positive information on using baking soda in a scrub or mask as an anti-acne treatment. Some find that baking soda works wonders on their acne. However, there are others who are super sensitive to baking soda. And if this is you, and baking soda causes uncomfortable redness or burning, then ditch the baking soda and opt for trying this coconut oil face scrub recipe using fine sugar or apricot kernel meal in lieu of the baking soda.

Following are a few baking soda and coconut oil face scrub recipes you can try based on your skin type. But feel free to experiment with your ingredients to find the best match for your skin type!

Ingredients:

.5 oz. cocoa butter
.25 oz. shea butter
3.5 oz. organic liquid castile soap
1 teaspoon liquid soy lecithin
2 ml rosehip seed oil
15 drops birch tar essential oil
15 drops rose absolute blend
5 drops non-GMO vitamin E
5 drops rosemary extract
1 teaspoon activated charcoal powder

Instructions:

To create this activated charcoal facial cleanser recipe you’ll begin by using a digital kitchen scale to weigh out the cocoa and shea butters. Melt in either a double boiler or at reduced power in a glass Pyrex Prepware Measuring Cup. Then using a measuring spoon, measure out the soy lecithin and stir into the melted butters until it is thoroughly combined.

Next, weigh out the organic castile soap (Mountain Rose Herbs carries a good one or you can use Dr. Bronner’s Unscented Baby Mild Castile Liquid Soap) and gently stir into the butters and soy lecithin. Now measure out the rosehip seed oil using a Plastic Transfer Pipettes or a glass dropper and stir in. Follow with the essential oils, vitamin E and rosemary extract using a clean dropper for each ingredient.

Finally measure out the activated charcoal powder and whisk into the cleanser. Then using a funnel, pour the facial cleanser into one 4 oz. amber glass bottle with a lotion pump – or use small 1 oz. or 2 oz. amber bottles with screw tops or glass droppers for travel friendly facial cleansers – and allow to cool completely. It will thicken some as it cools.

Beauty and Natural Skin Care DIY - Natural Handmade Lemongrass Exfoliating Foaming Facial Scrub Cleanser Recipe

Since sampling the Suki Exfoliate Foaming Lemongrass Cleanser via Birchbox several months ago, I’ve been dying to make my own version. Not only is it a great product, but it’s a bestseller on Birchbox as well as one of their most pinned products. {Learn about Beauty Sampling Programs.}

Suki Face Exfoliate Foam Cleanser with Lemongrass Extract and Natural Sugar

Part of the natural Suki Skin Care beauty line, this natural exfoliating foaming cleanser cleanses skin with a natural vegetable liquid soap base combined with exfoliating sugar and alpha hydroxy acid which helps to even skin tone, brighten skin and fight blemishes.

As this product is comprised primarily of sugar, liquid soap and fruit and flower extracts, it was easy to come up with my own version. However, as everyone’s skin type is different you can easily craft different versions of this natural facial cleanser in order to customize your skin care routine.

Natural Handmade Exfoliating Sugar and Lemongrass Facial Scrub Recipe - Cleans and Brightens Skin, Helps Even Skin Tone, Remove Impurities and Fight Blemishes

Ingredients:

7 oz. natural sugar
1 oz. Dr. Bronner’s 18-in-1 Unscented Baby-Mild Pure Castile Soap
1/2 teaspoon calendula powder
1/2 teaspoon chamomile powder
1/2 teaspoon lavender powder
1/4 teaspoon orange peel powder
1/4 teaspoon lemon peel powder
12 drops ml lemongrass essential oil

How to Make a Natural Homemade Exfoliating Facial Cleanser

Instructions:

To create your foaming facial scrub, you’ll start by using a digital kitchen scale to weigh out the sugar in a large pyrex measuring cup. Next measure out the dry ingredients – the fruit and botanical powders – and add to the sugar. Mix thoroughly with a fork.

Now weigh out the liquid soap and add to the sugar. Finally, using a graduated plastic transfer pipette, measure out the lemongrass essential oil and add to the sugar, soap and powders. Mix well with a fork until all ingredients are thoroughly incorporated, then spoon into the container(s) of your choice.

This recipe will yield four 2 oz. containers filled with a net weight of 2.1 oz. of product or two 4 oz. containers each filled with 4.2 oz. of product.

To use, simply scoop out a dime sized amount and scrub between your damp hands. Then massage onto your face in circular motion, rinse and pat dry. Follow with your favorite toner and/or facial moisturizer.

Natural Homemade Foaming Facial Cleasner Recipe with Lemongrass Essential Oil and Natural Sugar

This recipe creates a wonderful natural foaming scrub cleanser. However, if have sensitive skin, you may find that the fruit peel powders, much like an alpha hydroxy peel, can cause temporary skin redness or light burning. This is easily calmed by following up with a soothing natural facial moisturizer.

However, if your skin is overly sensitive, I recommend reducing the orange peel powder to 1/8 teaspoon, omitting the lemon peel powder, reducing the lemongrass essential oil to 3ml and adding 1/2 teaspoon of white rice flour.

Alternately, for highly acne prone skin, you can also add 1/4 teaspoon of activated charcoal. Feel free to mix and match ingredients to find your perfect combination or experiment with other ingredients such as cranberrygrapefruit or rosehips powders! You can even substitute out the lemongrass with lavender essential oil if it works better for you.

I have sort of a love/hate relationship with my bathroom. On one hand, people do some pretty disgusting things in there and I’m usually the one who ends up cleaning it. On the other hand, a properly maintened bathroom can be a place of refuge. Especially on days like today where I had to bow out of work due to fibro pain. A tub full of hot water and some Epsom salts certainly can do a lot to not only reduce the level of pain I’m having, but relax my mind at the same time. So for those of you who don’t run screaming from your bathroom, but choose rather to turn it into an oasis, here a few simple, DIY bath and body projects you can whip up for loving your skin and calming your mind. And, once you get started you may never want the pampering to end, so I suggest starting a panty in a cool, dry location full of staples you may need including all natural Castile soap, organic salts and butters, organic herbs and essential oils and more from Mountain Rose Herbs.
