Make this easy homemade baking soda and coconut oil face scrub recipe to help shrink pores and conquer blackheads!

Make this easy homemade baking soda and coconut oil face scrub recipe to help shrink pores and conquer blackheads while cleansing your face at the same time.

Baking soda has long been used as a home remedy to help tackle tough acne and pimples. This baking soda and coconut oil face scrub recipe takes that notion and adds naturally cleansing oils to help clean your skin and exfoliate it at the same time.

Keep in mind, though, that there are mixed reviews on using baking soda as a home remedy for acne. I’ve read a lot of both negative and positive information on using baking soda in a scrub or mask as an anti-acne treatment. Some find that baking soda works wonders on their acne. However, there are others who are super sensitive to baking soda. And if this is you, and baking soda causes uncomfortable redness or burning, then ditch the baking soda and opt for trying this coconut oil face scrub recipe using fine sugar or apricot kernel meal in lieu of the baking soda.

Following are a few baking soda and coconut oil face scrub recipes you can try based on your skin type. But feel free to experiment with your ingredients to find the best match for your skin type!

DIY Natural Activated Charcoal Facial Scrub and Cleanser Recipe for Acne Prone Skin

If you’ve been paying attention to new beauty trends, then you’ve probably heard about the oil cleansing method. Basically it’s where you use a combination of oils – with properties that suit your skin type – to cleanse your face instead of soap. This works fabulously for removing even waterproof makeup. Something as simple as olive oil or grapeseed oil will have that mascara gone in no time. But you can use it on the rest of your face too. Because it won’t strip your skin of the natural oils it needs, it’s less likely to overproduce oil to make up for the oils that have been stripped away.

This two-in-one cleanser and activated charcoal facial scrub recipe is sort of a catch all product that combines a gentle castile based soap with natural oils as well as activated charcoal and essential oils proven to be effective in fighting acne. Natural fine grain white sugar gently exfoliates facial skin to slough off dead skin cells while shea butter, castor and hazelnut oils clean away makeup and dirt, while the castile soap gives it a little bit of that bubbly action that you’re used to.

Ingredients:

4 oz. white sugar
28 grams Dr. Bronner’s 2-in-1 Hemp Unscented Baby Mild Castile Soap
7 grams shea butter
4 grams castor oil
4 grams hazelnut oil
1/2 teaspoon activated charcoal
6 drops tea tree oil
12 drops lavender essential oil
6 drops rosemary essential oil

Instructions:

Using a digital scale weigh out the shea butter into a small glass pyrex measuring cup then heat in the microwave just until melted. Weigh out and add the castor oil, hazelnut oil, and liquid soap.

Using graduated plastic transfer pipettes, measure out and add the essential oils. Mix well.

In a separate container, weigh out the sugar and the activated charcoal. Mix to incorporate then using a fork mix into the liquid mixture of soap and oils until thoroughly combined. Transfer to a 4 oz. plastic or glass jar or container and keep sealed tightly when not in use.

To use, scoop out desired amount with clean hands and gently massage onto wet face and neck until all of the sugar dissolves, then rinse and pat dry. This washes cleanly away so your skin doesn’t feel oily or greasy making it suitable for most skin types prone to occasional acne. Use daily if you’re prone to regular acne breakouts or every other day if prone to occasional acne.

Beauty and Natural Skin Care DIY - Natural Handmade Lemongrass Exfoliating Foaming Facial Scrub Cleanser Recipe

Since sampling the Suki Exfoliate Foaming Lemongrass Cleanser via Birchbox several months ago, I’ve been dying to make my own version. Not only is it a great product, but it’s a bestseller on Birchbox as well as one of their most pinned products. {Learn about Beauty Sampling Programs.}

Suki Face Exfoliate Foam Cleanser with Lemongrass Extract and Natural Sugar

Part of the natural Suki Skin Care beauty line, this natural exfoliating foaming cleanser cleanses skin with a natural vegetable liquid soap base combined with exfoliating sugar and alpha hydroxy acid which helps to even skin tone, brighten skin and fight blemishes.

As this product is comprised primarily of sugar, liquid soap and fruit and flower extracts, it was easy to come up with my own version. However, as everyone’s skin type is different you can easily craft different versions of this natural facial cleanser in order to customize your skin care routine.

Natural Handmade Exfoliating Sugar and Lemongrass Facial Scrub Recipe - Cleans and Brightens Skin, Helps Even Skin Tone, Remove Impurities and Fight Blemishes

Ingredients:

7 oz. natural sugar
1 oz. Dr. Bronner’s 18-in-1 Unscented Baby-Mild Pure Castile Soap
1/2 teaspoon calendula powder
1/2 teaspoon chamomile powder
1/2 teaspoon lavender powder
1/4 teaspoon orange peel powder
1/4 teaspoon lemon peel powder
12 drops ml lemongrass essential oil

How to Make a Natural Homemade Exfoliating Facial Cleanser

Instructions:

To create your foaming facial scrub, you’ll start by using a digital kitchen scale to weigh out the sugar in a large pyrex measuring cup. Next measure out the dry ingredients – the fruit and botanical powders – and add to the sugar. Mix thoroughly with a fork.

Now weigh out the liquid soap and add to the sugar. Finally, using a graduated plastic transfer pipette, measure out the lemongrass essential oil and add to the sugar, soap and powders. Mix well with a fork until all ingredients are thoroughly incorporated, then spoon into the container(s) of your choice.

This recipe will yield four 2 oz. containers filled with a net weight of 2.1 oz. of product or two 4 oz. containers each filled with 4.2 oz. of product.

To use, simply scoop out a dime sized amount and scrub between your damp hands. Then massage onto your face in circular motion, rinse and pat dry. Follow with your favorite toner and/or facial moisturizer.

Natural Homemade Foaming Facial Cleasner Recipe with Lemongrass Essential Oil and Natural Sugar

This recipe creates a wonderful natural foaming scrub cleanser. However, if have sensitive skin, you may find that the fruit peel powders, much like an alpha hydroxy peel, can cause temporary skin redness or light burning. This is easily calmed by following up with a soothing natural facial moisturizer.

However, if your skin is overly sensitive, I recommend reducing the orange peel powder to 1/8 teaspoon, omitting the lemon peel powder, reducing the lemongrass essential oil to 3ml and adding 1/2 teaspoon of white rice flour.

Alternately, for highly acne prone skin, you can also add 1/4 teaspoon of activated charcoal. Feel free to mix and match ingredients to find your perfect combination or experiment with other ingredients such as cranberrygrapefruit or rosehips powders! You can even substitute out the lemongrass with lavender essential oil if it works better for you.

Natural Face Scrub DIY - Homemade Beauty Recipe
There are a lot of natural homemade scrub recipes popping up across blogdom lately, and why not? They’re easy to make, can be crafted from everyday ingredients found in one’s kitchen and do wonders for skin. My latest homemade scrub find comes from Along Abbey Road and is for a Natural Facial Scrub Exfoliant (pictured above.) It’s made from organic raw almonds, organic oat bran and pink Himalayan salt. Just combine the ingredients in a food processor to grind down, then scrub onto your face and body twice a week to help rejuvenate and cleanse.
