Ginger oil for hair can help reduce dandruff and lead to thicker hair over time.

Ginger Essential Oil Benefits

Ginger essential oil probably isn’t in your top 10 favorite essential oils, but it should be. The benefits of ginger essential oil are numerous for both your hair and your skin.

A natural anti-inflammatory, ginger essential oil  feels warming on the skin when you use it topically. For this reason, it’s often used in pain relieving and sore muscle recipes to relieve pain naturally without side effects. Not only does it work well as a natural pain remedy, it’s also a wonderful alternative ingredient for those who may be allergic or sensitive to capsicum, which is found in cayenne.

You can also use ginger essential oil for skin in natural skin care recipes. It’s antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and full of antioxidants to combat the signs of aging. These benefits of ginger essential oil make this one of my favorite essential oils for natural skin care. Ginger oil for hair can also boost hair growth and control flakes from dandruff. Because who wants to deal with that?

Learn about ginger essential oil and its natural benefits when used in beauty and skin care as well as hair care and as a natural home remedy to sooth sore muscle pain.

What is Ginger Essential Oil?

Ginger essential oil is extracted from the root of the ginger plant by either steam distillation or extraction using carbon dioxide. Ginger is native to South Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean, but it was exported to India and Europe about 2,000 years ago. It is a common spice in Indian and Asian food.

In the past, ginger root was commonly used for digestive issues. How many of you grew up drinking ginger ale when you had a stomach ache? Having a glass of pop was the only good part of being sick when I was a kid.

Ginger essential oil benefits aren’t just for digestion however. Using ginger essential oil for skin and ginger oil for hair also offers many benefits. So it’s great as part of your natural beauty routine.

Inflammation

One of the main ginger essential oil benefits include being a natural anti-inflammatory. Ginger essential oil has several natural compounds that are natural anti-inflammatories. One of these compounds is zingibain, which has been shown to help relieve migraine pain without side effects.

The anti-inflammatory properties of ginger can help reduce pain and inflammation from muscle ache, arthritis, and migraines. While I use my favorite ginger oil salve for sore muscles, I also find it effective at soothing fibromyalgia pain when it flares up.

Cramping

Ginger oil can also help reduce muscle cramping when used topically, so ginger essential oil benefits include after exercising care for your body. It may be effect for sore muscles, menstrual cramps, stomach cramps, and back pain. It can also help soothe sore muscles after working out.

Along with being a natural anti-inflammatory, ginger essential oil can boost circulation, which can lower muscle cramping. The warming effect is a benefits of ginger essential oil that can help relax muscles to reduce cramping.

Uses for ginger essential oil.

Anxiety

Ginger essential oil benefits also includes relieving anxiety naturally. It has been shown to naturally reduce anxiety in animals, and it may help reduce anxiety in people, too. Ginger works by activating the serotonin receptors in the brain, which makes you feel good.

This can help improve your mood, and it can also reduce pain by lowering anxiety levels. As someone who once suffered from agoraphobia, I’m well versed in how debilitating anxiety can be. Therefore, finding natural ways to better cope with anxiety and stress are always high on my list.

Antioxidant

Perhaps the biggest ginger essential oil benefits is that it is high in antioxidants that combat free radicals in the skin. Free radicals are oxygen molecules that have an unpaired electron. This causes oxidative stress in the body. Antioxidants bind with the unpaired electron to make the oxygen stable.

Antioxidants can prevent the visible signs of aging, including fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots. Free radicals are also associated with some diseases like Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and cancer. Ginger essential oil for skin helps boost antioxidants naturally for better looking skin.

Antimicrobial

Ginger essential oil is a natural germ killer. If you use antibiotic soap or certain kinds of hand sanitizers, you could be creating super bugs that are resistant to antibiotics and will be harder to kill.

Using ginger essential oil won’t create super bugs by only killing the weak germs, so it’s a great natural antibacterial agent to use. It’s especially effective on E. coli, staphylococcus aureus, candida albicans, and bacillus subtilis.

Beauty Benefits of Ginger Essential Oil and How to Use It

Ginger essential oil benefits can be used in DIY natural beauty recipes, but keep in mind that it feels warm when you apply it topically. For some recipes, this is a great thing and can help reduce pain. But for some skin care recipes, you may want to combine ginger essential oil with other oils.

Ginger essential oil benefits make it a great oil to use in your natural beauty recipes. It can help protect the skin from signs of aging and naturally kills germs that can cause acne or other skin conditions. Ginger oil for hair can help reduce dandruff and lead to thicker hair over time.

Ingredients:

3 oz. arnica infused fractionated coconut oil (or arnica herbal oil)
1 oz. white cosmetic beeswax (or natural beeswax)
48 drops (about 2 mL) ginger or fresh ginger essential oil

Instructions:

Begin by infusing arnica flowers in fractionated coconut oil to create an herbal infused oil. To do this you can use either the solar infused method or the quick heat method to create your arnica infused coconut oil. (You can find a tutorial for both methods at the Mountain Rose Herbs blog here.)

This natural pain relief salve recipe with arnica and ginger essential oil is made with just four simple ingredients to relieve inflammation and ease pain associated with muscle pain, arthritis, sprains, fibromyalgia, bruises and carpal tunnel. Make this natural home remedy in just ten minutes or less!

Once the arnica infused fractionated coconut oil is ready, you can make my natural pain relief salve recipe. To do this, weigh out the arnica infused oil and beeswax using a digital scale. Then combine in a small 1- cup glass Pyrex measuring cup.

Gently heat the oil and beeswax in a double boiler until melted. Once melted, remove from heat.

Now add the ginger essential oil. You can do this by either measuring out 2 mL essential oil with a transfer pipette, or by using a dropper to add the amount of drops called for.

Stir to combine, then evenly pour into three 2 oz. glass jars or metal tins of your choice. (I used  2.3 oz. clear glass thick wall cosmetic jar from SKS Bottle & Packaging. If you double my natural pain relief salve recipe you will be able to fill around five of these jars.)

Allow the pain salve to cool completely. Then screw on the lids and label as desired for personal use or gifting.

Notes on making ingredient substitutions to my natural pain relief salve recipe.

I chose to use fractionated coconut oil in my natural pain relief salve recipe so it would absorb quickly and not feel greasy. However you’re welcome to use another carrier oil of your choice or simply purchase pre-made arnica herbal oil.

Alternately, you can also use Mountain Rose Herbs Warming Ginger Massage Oil in place of the fractionated coconut oil and omit the ginger essential oil entirely. However you will still need to infuse the arnica in the warming ginger massage oil if you choose to make this substitution.

Additionally, if your skin is easily irritated, I highly recommend using Mountain Rose Herbs fresh ginger essential oil over their  ginger essential oil which is extracted from the dried, rather than a fresh root and doesn’t cause skin irritation.

A caution on the use of arnica.

Due to the nature of arnica and its compounds, never use arnica on broken skin. Best suited for occasional topical use, you should avoid using arnica for extended periods of time. It is important to note as well, that if you are allergic or sensitive to ragweed, daisies, marigolds and other flowers in the Asteraceae or Compositae family, arnica may cause an allergic reaction. Or, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, arnica should simply be avoided all together.

If you are sensitive or allergic to arnica there are a number of other typically non-irritating herbs that can help to reduce pain caused by inflammation. These include St. John’s Wort, green tea, rosemary, sage and turmeric. (You may also be interested in Mountain Rose Herbs Arnica St. John’s Herbal Oil.) Additionally, herbs such as neem leaf, St. John’s Wort, lavender, peppermint, marjoram, chamomile and eucalyptus are all also effective at relieving pain symptoms. You can simply infuse one or more of these organic herbs into your carrier oil in place of the arnica.

Easy ways to decorate the jars for your pain relief salve.

I used round cactus stickers to decorate the lids of my jars. You can also use washi tape to “seal” the jars closed, running the washi tape across the lid and down the sides of the jar. Then place a round sticker label over the washi tape on top of the lid. Alternately wrapping washi tape around your jars is another easy idea.

I first discovered and used a salt shampoo from Etsy many many years back. While that particular shop is no longer in business, I always loved the extra volume and texture it gave my hair. Having fine, typically limp hair, the salt brought out my hair’s natural waves that I’d forgotten I have, and made it more lush, thick and luxurious.

I recently rediscovered salt shampoo with Pacifica’s Salty Waves hair care line. This in turn inspired me to create my own milk and egg sea salt shampoo bar infused with ginger and sea kelp.

Formulated using coconut oil for strong, shiny hair, this natural sea salt shampoo bar recipe also contains milk and egg to moisturize and condition hair. In addition I also added ginger essential oil and sea kelp for their hair care benefits.

Sea kelp, which is a natural source of iodine, treats dandruff while also strengthening and nourishing both your hair and scalp. Like sea kelp, ginger essential oil also treats dandruff. Additionally, ginger essential oil can boost hair growth and diminish hair loss. It also makes hair soft and shiny. (Not to mention it smells AMAZING!)

Not only will your hair love the combination of ingredients found in my natural sea salt shampoo bar recipe, but you’ll also love how long it lasts! Just one bar should last about the same amount of time as two to three bottles of a similar shampoo in liquid form.

My sea salt shampoo bar recipe contains 75% sea salt and 30% superfat. While salt bars typically make incredibly hard bars of soap, I reduced the water to 30% of the oil in this recipe to compensate for the addition of the egg. You can use either one whole egg for my salt shampoo bar or two egg yolks as desired.

Milk & Egg Sea Salt Shampoo Bar Recipe

© Rebecca D. Dillon

Ingredients:

14 oz. coconut oil

4.2 fl. oz. half and half
1.8 oz. sodium hydroxide/lye

10.5 oz. fine sea salt
one egg (or two egg yolks)
1 Tablespoon kelp powder
.5 oz. fresh ginger essential oil
1 teaspoon alpine green mica (optional)

Instructions:

My sea salt shampoo bar recipe yields six soap bars weighing about 5 oz. each. I used this silicone chrysanthemum mold for this soap recipe.

Begin by measuring out the half and half in fluid ounces. Place the half and half in your freezer until it is slushy with a thin layer of ice on top. In the meantime, remove the egg (or eggs) from the refrigerator and bring to room temperature.

While you are waiting, collect all of the other ingredients and equipment you’ll need for making my sea salt shampoo bar recipe. This includes proper eye protection, long sleeved clothing and gloves.

You should also double check any containers you are using to be sure they are heat safe. None of your containers or your utensils used for soapmaking should be aluminum. Stick to stainless steel, Type 5 polypropylene plastic and tempered glass to avoid a potential disaster.

If you’ve never made homemade soap before, I recommend reviewing my cold process soapmaking tutorial before getting started. This will help you gain a better understanding of the process as well as help you determine if my milk & egg sea salt shampoo bar recipe is the best recipe to start with.

Once your egg or egg yolks reach room temperature and your half and half is icy cold, you are ready to get started!

Using a digital scale weigh out the coconut oil into a heat safe container. Then, depending on the container used, either heat the coconut oil until melted at reduced power in the microwave, in a double boiler or over medium-low heat on the stovetop. Once melted, remove the coconut oil from heat, then set aside to cool.

In a separate container, weigh out the lye called for in the recipe. Pour the lye into the half and half and then stir until all the lye has dissolved. Set aside.

In the interim, measure out the kelp powder and mica (for color if desired) and weigh out the ginger essential oil and sea salt.

Once your coconut oil has cooled to around 90°F, remove about a cup of the oil from the container. Add the egg (to temper it so you don’t end up with scrambled eggs) and whisk until combined.

Now slowly pour the half and half and lye mixture into the main container of melted coconut oil. Mix briefly using an immersion blender, then add the remaining coconut oil and egg.

Mix again using the immersion blender until combined, then add the salt, kelp powder, essential oil and mica. Continue mixing until you reach trace, then pour evenly into each of your mold’s six cavities.

Lightly cover the mold with parchment paper or foodservice film and set aside overnight. You can unmold your sea salt shampoo bars the next day.

All that’s left now is to allow your shampoo bars to cure for four to six weeks prior to use. Once cured, simply massage your shampoo bar onto your wet hair and scalp as desired. Then rinse out and follow with an apple cider vinegar rinse or my homemade scalp tonic recipe.
