Neem Oil's Uses for Skin and Hair plus natural hair and skin care recipes that use neem oil as an ingredient!

Neem Oil Benefits and Uses for Skin and Hair Care

Since I first learned about neem oil two years ago, I’ve been thrilled with the discovery. Neem oil is a carrier oil that I’ve found to help both promote healing and soothe pain. It has many applications for use in both skin care and hair care products. Used both medicinally and cosmetically for hundreds of years, neem oil is naturally antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal and possesses hydrating and regenerative properties. In addition it also has anti-inflammatory and analgesic (pain killing) properties and contains both vitamin E and essential fatty acids.

First used in India in 2000-4000 BC, neem oil is a key herb used in Ayurvedic and Unani medicine. Neem oil is commonly used topically to treat rheumatism, eczema, ringworm, athlete’s foot, cold sores, psoriasis, warts, chronic syphilitic sores, infected burn wounds, and slow-healing skin ulcers. It has also been shown to help control various skin infections including scabies and candida. Following is my collection of homemade skin and hair care recipes that contain neem oil. They highlight neem oil benefits and uses so you can discover and create your own favorite neem oil skin care recipes and hair care recipes.

Ingredients:

1 oz. Argan oil
1 oz. Cyclomethicone
.1 oz./2.8 grams fragrance oil (or 12-24 drops essential oil), optional

Instructions:

Using a digital scale weigh out the argan oil and Cyclomethicone.  Combine in a 2 oz. glass bottle using a funnel. If a scent is desired, you would also weigh out and add a skin safe fragrance oil or essential oil to the bottle. Close the bottle with a fingertip mister, then shake well to combine.

To use simply spritz a small amount on hair for softness and shine as well as to reduce frizz. Alternately you can spritz a small amount into the palm of your hand and apply to hair ends to help keep ends healthy and prevent breakage.

This argan oil shine spray recipe also makes a great dry oil body spray for silky smooth skin.

This rose scented DIY sea salt spray for hair helps to give your hair volume and texture! Spray it on then scrunch for sexy tousled beach waves any time!

This fabulous rose scented DIY sea salt spray for hair gives your hair volume and texture any time you need it! Simply spray it on then scrunch for sexy tousled beach waves.

My sea salt spray recipe is inspired by Not Your Mothers Beach Babe Texturizing Sea Salt Spray, a product which has become one of my go to hair staples based on affordability and performance. Like Not Your Mother’s sea salt spray, my sea salt spray recipe also contains dimethicone to counteract the drying effect salt can have on hair. (Their product also contains Sea Kelp Extract, however I don’t currently have this in my ingredient stash. But don’t be afraid to try it on your own!) Rose water is also used to give it its fabulous fragrance.

If you prefer not to use silicones in your hair care products, you can simply omit both the Dimethicone (silicone) and the Polysorbate 20 (emulsifier) which is used to keep the Dimethicone mixed with the water. For more hold double the sea salt and omit the Epsom salt. For less hold do the opposite.

Ingredients:

3.25 oz. distilled hot water
1/4 teaspoon fine sea salt
1/4 teaspoon Epsom salt
1 ml Dimethicone
1 ml Polysorbate 20
.25 oz. rose water (or rose hydrosol)

Instructions:

Begin by using a digital scale to weigh out the distilled water into a glass Pyrex measuring cup. Heat in the microwave until hot but not quite ready to boil.

Use measuring spoons to measure out the salts then stir into the hot water until the salt has dissolved completely.

Now, using a graduated transfer pipette for each, measure out the Dimethicone and Polysorbate 20 and stir into the salt water mixture.

Finally weigh out the rose water and stir into your DIY sea salt spray for hair. (As this is a water based product, you may also want to consider using a preservative such as Optiphen ND to prevent the growth of bacteria, fungus and yeast.)

This fabulous rose scented DIY sea salt spray for hair gives your hair volume and texture any time you need it! Simply spray it on then scrunch for sexy tousled beach waves.

Using a small funnel pour the sea salt spray into a 4 oz. glass bottle and close with a fingertip mister. Shake well then spritz onto hair as desired. You can use your new DIY sea salt spray on damp, towel dried hair or dry hair for different looks.

Treat Dry Hair with A DIY Moisturizing Hair Mask this Winter

Winter can wreak havoc on even the healthiest of hair leaving you struggling to find new shampoos and conditioners to alleviate your dry tresses. Instead of switching up shampoo and conditioners this time around I decided instead to create a winter mint homemade moisturizing hair mask recipe to help counteract the effects of winter. Made using natural ingredients, this homemade moisturizing hair mask recipe with sea buckthorn oil delivers intense moisture to hair ravaged by winter’s elements along with the fresh scent of spearmint and peppermint.

This winter mint homemade moisturizing hair mask recipe is made with natural ingredients and delivers intense moisture to hair ravaged by winter's elements.

I was inspired to formulate this homemade moisturizing hair mask recipe by one of this month’s Birchbox samples of Amika’s Nourishing Mask For The Hair. This product conditions hair with the power of sea buckthorn berry and jojoba oil and provides intense conditioning for all hair types. I adapted their ingredients in my own recipe to provide more intense moisture by using less liquid and in lieu of the water – the first ingredient in their product – I used a smaller amount of aloe vera instead. I also made cocoa butter and argan oils the primary ingredients. Per your preference however, you can either use jojoba or argan oil or a combination of both when making this for yourself. Or even substitute the cocoa butter with shea butter or even mango butter.

Winter Mint Moisturizing Hair Mask Recipe

Ingredients:

.75 oz. cocoa butter
.5 oz. jojoba oil or argan oil
.5 oz. aloe vera gel
.25 oz. emulsifying wax
3 ml dimethicone (or Crafters Choice™ LuxGlide N350, a natural alternative)
1.5 ml sea buckthorn oil
.02 oz.Optiphen Plus (paraben free preservative)
12 drops spearmint essential oil
12 drops peppermint essential oil
5 drops vitamin E oil

Instructions:

Using a digital kitchen scale begin by weighing out the cocoa butter and the emulsifying wax into a 2 cup or larger glass Pyrex measuring cup. Melt at 60% power in the microwave until melted fully. (Alternately you can also use a double boiler.) Now weigh out the jojoba oil (or argan oil) and sea buckthorn oil and stir into the mixture.

Allow the mixture to cool to around 160°F then weigh out the preservative and stir into the mixture.

Using graduated transfer pipettes measure out and add the Dimethicone, vitamin E, and the essential oils. Stir to combine.

Now weigh out the aloe vera gel in a separate container and heat at reduced power in the microwave to the same temperature as the melted oils and cocoa butter. (You can also try coconut water in place of the aloe!) Add to the hair mask ingredients and mix using a stick blender until the mixture starts to thicken and become creamy.

Pour into a 2 oz. container and allow to thicken fully. The final product will be pliable and similar to the texture of play dough.

To use scoop out desired amount based on hair length and massage into hair until fully covered. (It will melt into your hair as you massage it in.) Leave on anywhere from 5 minutes to overnight then wash out as usual. For extremely damaged or “fried” hair use once or twice a week as a normal conditioner or massage a small amount into ends of hair as a leave in product.

DIY Beauty Hair Care Tips

I like to use this as a regular conditioner when needed and rinse then follow with Not Your Mothers Beach Babe Texturizing Sea Salt Spray after towel drying. I then massage in the sea salt spray into my and towel dry a second time. This adds volume while still leaving hair looking healthy and shiny and prevents the extra conditioning from weighing my fine hair down. I then air dry and then turn my head upside down and finger comb through.

Alternately, you can also allow your hair to air dry, then scrunch with AG Hair Tousled Texture to add waves and volume.

To help keep your healthier on a regular basis without stripping it I also recommend using a cleansing conditioner instead of a regular shampoo. I’m currently crushing on Renpure Solutions Rosemary Mint Cleansing Conditioner.

If you can’t get enough of how good this hair mask smells, I also found that my moisturizing hair mask recipe also doubles as a wonderful hand cream for dry hands!

Ingredients:

2.5 oz. shea butter
1 oz. avocado oil
.25 oz. coconut oil
.25 oz. jojoba oil
.25 oz. argan oil

Optional Ingredients:

several drops of lavender essential oil
several drops of rosemary essential oil
several drops of geranium essential oil

Directions:

Using a digital kitchen scale weigh out the shea butter into a small to medium sized glass pyrex measuring cup. Heat in the microwave at 50% power until melted. (Alternately you can also use a double boiler.)

Once melted, weigh out the avocado, coconut, jojoba and argan oils and stir into the shea butter.

Finally, add several drops each of lavender, rosemary and geranium essential oil and stir thoroughly.

These essential oils are suitable for both dry and normal hair types. If you generally have normal hair, you can also experiment with lemon, cedarwood, thyme and clary sage essential oils.

Once you’ve combined all of your ingredients, pour into a 4 oz. container of your choice and allow to cool completely. You can place your hair mask in the refrigerator to speed up this process if desired.

How to Use Your Hair Mask

To use, simply apply enough of this natural hair mask to cover all of your tresses then comb through. Leave on for ten minutes to overnight, then wash and condition your hair as usual. Use as often as needed depending on your hair type to keep it shiny and moisturized. Alternately, you can also substitute this product for your regular conditioner – just use less! – and apply after shampooing, then rinse.

For extra dry or frizzy hair, apply a small amount – a little goes a long way! – to clean hair before styling to tame frizz and add shine.
