How to Make No Bake Bourbon Balls

Whether you need a last minute gift to bring to a holiday party or a super last minute gift on Christmas Eve, these homemade bourbon balls are the perfect choice! Not only is this recipe for bourbon balls super easy to make, there’s also no baking required. Basically that means they are pretty fool proof. Even if you’re a slacker in the kitchen like I am. While this recipe for bourbon balls calls for nuts, you can easily omit them from the recipe if you have nut allergies.

Ingredients for Making Gluten Free Bourbon Balls

This easy bourbon balls recipe can be made with either vanilla wafers or ginger snaps. For my first batch of homemade bourbon balls, I used gluten-free Mi-Del’s Ginger Snaps. They crush really easily which makes them worth the extra $1.50 even if you don’t need gluten free bourbon balls. However, one bag will only make you one batch. For my second batch I used regular grocery store brand gingersnaps and had a heck of a time crushing them. I actually took a hammer to the outside of the bag at 9am the first year I made these. However I still ended up with some whole cookies left in the bag and lots of large chunks.

A delightful no bake dessert for Christmas, these no bake bourbon balls can also be made with rum or customized with your favorite ingredients whether it be coconut or dried raspberries for a flavorful holiday treat!

I also used baking nuts for my recipe for bourbon balls. They were significantly cheaper than buying whole nuts from the nut aisle, especially as I wasn’t going to use an entire can. Plus it was the only way I could find them unsalted at the time. Finally, I recommend that choose your bourbon wisely. The better the booze, well, the better the ball! I specifically used Woodford Reserve for my recipe.

If you aren’t a huge fan of bourbon, you can simply swap out the bourbon with your favorite rum. These would actually be amazing with a spiced rum or a flavored rum that accents the ingredients that go into the recipe.

Easy Packaging Idea for Gifting Your Bourbon Balls

For easy DIY holiday gifts, I placed about 8 balls each in a zipper sandwich bags. I then place the balls inside glassine bags for presentation and labeled them with holiday stickers. You can even add a strip of washi tape to each of your gifts with the “eat by” date.

Once made, cover and refrigerate your bourbon balls. They will keep for a week in the refrigerator so don’t make these too far ahead. Otherwise you’ll have to freeze them.

You’ll also want to keep them refrigerated when you’re not binging on them during yet another seasonal rerun of A Christmas Story.

The Best Ice Cream Milkshake Recipes

Ice cream milkshakes are a favorite summertime treat. Not only are they cold and delicious, they’re fairy easy to make. Simply mix three big scoops of your favorite ice cream flavor with 2 ounces of milk in a blend. Then add your favorite toppings! For a thinner ice cream milkshake, you can add extra milk. Alternately, if you are out of milk, try using an almond milk vanilla creamer in its place. You can also make a grown up version of your favorite ice cream milkshakes by substituting the milk with liquor instead.

The milkshake combinations, when you think about it, are almost endless. So whether you like your ice cream milkshakes spiked or kid-safe, topped with cookies or cotton candy, or drowning in caffeine, here are my favorite (mostly grown up) versions of ice cream milkshake recipes to try this summer.

I love food. I also love doughnuts. Unfortunately, our local Krispy Kreme – who made the best donuts ever! – has shut down due a fire. They claim that they are planning to re-open in a new location – hopefully closer to downtown – fingers crossed – but have not yet found a new location.

In the meantime, folks in Roanoke are writing parody news articles as well as freaking out a little. Rather than succumb to the chaos of a doughnut-less society, however, you can make your own even if – like me – you aren’t the best cook. While they probably won’t compare to the glory that Krispy Kreme holds in most Roanokers’ hearts, they do make for a tasty and fun afternoon with the kids.

Cakespy.com, a deliciously tempting blog that covers everything cakes, cupcakes and pies galore as well as explains why cupcakes are nutritious – I mean the sugar gives you energy, right? – offers up an easy recipe and tutorial for how to make doughnuts using refrigerated biscuits in a can (pictured above.)

These fried delights are ready in 15 minutes or less and can be topped with any combination of icing, sugar or sprinkles you can imagine. Plus it’s the perfect project to do with stir crazy kids on an afternoon while they’re waiting for the rain to clear out. (Although the sugar could possible mean more chaos if the rain decides to hang on.)

Turkish Delight Recipe for the Narnia Lover in You

I love the books, The Chronicles of Narnia, by C.S. Lewis. I remember reading through the entire series in my school’s elementary library as a child. The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe was, and still is, my favorite book.

I was thrilled when I saw the original movie as a child and so I was, of course, insanely excited when they came out with a new version of the movie in 2006. I actually went to see it in the theater, and that’s a rarity for me. So when I stumbled across a recipe for Turkish Delight, I just had to share it!

Turkish Delight Recipe

The author of Sprinkle Bakes Blog, Heather Baird, is also a huge Narnia fan. She was psyched when produced with the challenge for creating and featuring Turkish Delight on her blog in response to a birthday request from a girl turning 13. The result was a fantastic recipe for a sugary sweet, pink candy treat that can be made in the microwave!

The ingredients for this Turkish Delight recipe are simple. The candy recipe calls for cold water, cornstarch, sugar, corn syrup, pure lemon extract, powder sugar, ground pistachios, and little food coloring for that lovely pink. The rest is up to you. You can grab a printable recipe with the full ingredient list and recipe instructions from Sprinkle Bakes here.
