DIY Ring Holder - Handmade Clay Heart Ring Holder for Couples and Newlyweds - Great Homemade Wedding Gift Idea

Since spring is wedding season, I thought it’d be neat to make a ring holder for married couples. So I used some of the White Das Air Hardening Clay I had left over from my American Horror Story Inspired DIY Project from February and clay pottery modeling tools to create this cute, handmade carved tree stump ring holder. The design of this ring holder was inspired by the printable gift wrap and gift tags that I made back in December 2011. I simply took that design of a carved tree stump and reproduced it into a three dimensional sculpture.

To create this project, I first shaped a chunk of clay into a tree stump. I used a wet sponge to help smooth down the edges. If you’ve ever taken a pottery clay you know what a world of difference keeping a bucket of water and sponge on hand makes. Once I had my basic tree stump shape down I used the loop tool from my pottery modeling tool kit to carve out the top of the stump into a shallow nest where I could keep a ring. I then used it to carve the heart shape out of the clay stump. I followed with a damp sponge to smooth the edges.

For texture, I then used the wooden potters rib to give the stump texture by running lines along the outside of the stump all the way around.

Finally I used the needle tool to carve around the inside of the heart and to etch the initials inside the heart shape. Now that my tree was made, all that was left was to let it dry. For faster dry time I recommend carving out some of the clay from the inside of the piece from the bottom. Otherwise, your stump may take longer than 24 hours to dry. I left mine a solid, hefty piece and it took a week to dry completely. For even drying to avoid cracking, you can also cover loosely with a piece of plastic during the drying period.

My son and I both worked on this project together. These are our tree stump ring holders after they had finished drying. Mine is on the left while his is on the right.

Once dry you either paint your finished piece or simply cover with a clear acrylic sealer. Based on feedback from my followers on my facebook page, I painted my ring holder. I used three colors – black, brown and white. I painted inside the heart and initial grooves with black as well as some of the grooves around the stump. Then I painted over most of the stump with brown. I followed by painting the rest with a mixture of brown and white as well as a wash of color in some areas. Rings fit neatly inside the top of the tree stump as well as on the branch. It makes a tidy and decorative place to keep up with rings when they are removed. After all, no one wants to lose their wedding ring!

DIY Hand Stamped Cotton Muslin Bags for Gifts or Party and Wedding Favors
Your first step is to create the bags for your bath tea and salt soak. To do this, you’ll need a rubber stamp of your choice, a permanent pigment ink pad, and some drawstring muslin cotton bags like the ones from State Line Bag Co. I used three 3.25″x5″ muslin bags for this project. Simply press the stamp onto the ink pad and then onto your bags for quick and easy decorative favor or gift bags. Now that you bags are finished, you just need to fill them up! Following is the recipe for making a wonderful blend of herbs and salts! I used certified organic ingredients from Mountain Rose Herbs for this recipe.
Himalayan Pink Salt and Dead Sea Salt
DIY Organic Bath Tea and Salt Soak Recipe
Ingredients:
1/2 cup Epsom salt
Instructions:
For the rest of this project you’ll need one glass container or mixing bowl, three plastic pipettes with mL markings, a long handled spoon, the ingredients for this recipe, a 1/4 measuring cup, 1/8 measuring cup, and three cotton muslin bags with a drawstring closure.
dead sea salt and pink Himalayan salt
Measure out your dead sea salt, Himalayan pink salt and Epsom salt. Pour into a glass container or bowl.

Next, measure out your essential oils using a pipette with mL markings using a different pipette for each oil. Then add your essential oils one at a time to the salts and mix well. (Pictured above: I’ve mixed in my essential oils and just started to mix in the calendula petals.)
salt and herb mixture
Measure out your organic herbs and them into the salt mixture. Stir well so that they are thoroughly incorporated.

Now spoon your bath tea and salt soak mixture into your decorated muslin bags. Keep stirring the bath tea and salt soak with a spoon as you go so the salts don’t all settle to the bottom. This way each bag will have an even mixture of salts and herbs.
DIY Bath Tea and Salt Soak Recipe Gift and Wedding Favor Project Idea
Once you fill your bags simply pull the strings on the muslin bag tightly to close. To use, simply place one bag under running, hot bath water. This recipe yields approximately 9.5 oz. of bath tea and salt soak by weight. (Note: If you won’t be using these right away or are giving as wedding favors or gifts, I recommend that you enclose the bath tea and salt soaks inside poly zip bags first, then place the bag inside the decorated muslin bag. This way the essential oils from the bath tea and salt soak won’t seep through the bag.)
This Organic Bath Tea and Salt Soak is perfect not only for favors but as gifts for birthdays and Mother’s Day as well as stocking stuffers!

DIY Chalkboard Paint and Washi Tape Vases Craft Project

Two big crafting trends right now are chalkboard paint and Washi tape. So I figured, why not combine the two? Here are some fabulous handmade washi tape and chalkboard paint vases I created over the weekend from a Starbucks Mocha Frappuccino bottle and a Château Morrisette wine bottle. Not only do they look great, but they are a fun way to upcycle empty glass bottles!

Chalkboard Paint Covered Wine Bottles

To create your own DIY washi tape and chalkboard paint bottles, you’ll first need to select your bottles. Ideally, they will be empty. Rinse them out so there is no residue left in the bottles indicative of their previous contents. Then spray paint the bottles top to bottom with chalkboard paint. I used Krylon Chalkboard Aerosol Spray Paint for this project.

Once the paint dried completely, I then wrapped Washi tape around my bottles. You can use one pattern of Washi tape or several that compliment one another. It’s all up to you!

Next, you can write a message or name or a create a drawing on your chalkboard paint vase. These messages or drawings can be erased and a new message applied as often as you like. Therefore, this upcycled wine bottle vase is perfect for entertaining or as a wedding table centerpiece.

Now all that’s left is to add water and flowers to your vases! Create a simple arrangement with just one or two flowers or jazz it up with multiple flowers, then display.
