Benefits of Hibiscus in Skin Care

Hibiscus flowers are composed of 15 to 30% plant acids which make this plant a great choice for skin care in addition to a tea time treat! One of the plant acids found in hibiscus flowers is citric acid.

A member of the alpha hydroxy acid family of molecules, citric acid is found in many over-the-counter skin care products as well as clinical chemical peels. Especially useful for people suffering from acne or enlarged pores, citric acid helps to exfoliate one’s complexion by breaking down the protein bonds between dead and living skin cells, allowing the dead cells to be shed.

You can use either hibiscus flowers or hibiscus flower powder for this homemade hibiscus salt scrub recipe.

Ingredients:

27 oz. sea salt, fine ground
4.15 oz. grey Celtic sea salt
7.5 oz. safflower oil
1.5 oz. cocoa butter
.5 oz. hibiscus flowers, crushed
.65 oz. fragrance oil, of choice

How to make a salt scrub with hibiscus flowers:

Using a digital scale, weigh out the salts into a large glass bowl or a large glass Pyrex measuring cup.

Next, weigh out the hibiscus flowers. Place the flowers in a ziplock or similar bag and roll over the bag with a rolling pin to crush the flowers into a smaller size. Alternately you can use hibiscus flower powder.

Mix the crushed flower into the salts until they are evenly distributed throughout.

Now weigh the cocoa butter out in a separate container. Heat at 50% power in the microwave until melt. Or melt the cocoa butter in a double boiler.

Now weigh out the safflower oil and mix into the cocoa butter.

If you’d like to scent your hibiscus salt scrub recipe, weigh out a skin safe fragrance oil of your choice and stir into the melted butter and oil. Stir to mix. (If you prefer to use an essential oil, depending on usage rates for the essential oil you’ve chosen, use up to .o1 oz.)

Pour the salt and hibiscus mixture into the scented butter and oil and stir until fully combined.

Now spoon your completed hibiscus bath salts evenly into three 8 oz. jars. I used the 8 oz.Black PET PCR Jars with Black Smooth Lined Caps from SKS Bottle & Packaging specifically for this project. You can find them here.

Now label your containers for gifting or personal use to suit.

For my labels I used this free clip art collection from Citrus & Mint blog. (You can also visit Citrus & Mint on Etsy for more amazing scrapbook and clip art elements that you can buy.) I simply opened them into a Word program and added the desired text. I then printed my labels out onto full size label sheets. (You can find great prices on all kinds of labels and sticker sheets at World Label here.) I then cut them out and applied them to the face of my jars. (Learn how to create your own custom labels with my step-by-step tutorial here.)

If you’re making your hibiscus salt scrubs to sell, then you’ll want to label them in order to meet state and federal laws. If you’re unsure about the rules and regulations regarding labeling cosmetics, I highly recommend the book, Soap and Cosmetic Labeling: How to Follow the Rules and Regs Explained in Plain English, by Marie Gale.
