A Celebration of Winter Snow

I love snow. And really, snow is probably the only thing I actually like about winter. Fashion choices aside, of course. Granted, I do live on the line between what’s considered the North and the South. So it’s not often we get snow, much less get buried underneath of it. Which means, the threat of snow, brings with it the joy and excitement of a possible snow day. One that hasn’t diminished at all even after completing school and sending a child out the nest and into the world.

I remember one year we somehow magically got three feet of snow. It was my first year of college (so well over twenty years ago if you’re counting.) The city was not equipped to handle it. And unlike many of your snowfalls, there was no warming period afterwards. The city literally shut down for ten days. Everything was closed. On day five you could walk to the post office and pick up your mail. I took the two mile walk to help curb the boredom. The only person I saw was a man riding down the street on a snowmobile. It was the most bizarre thing I’ve probably seen in this town. And almost apocalyptic. (Except there were no zombies obviously. I’m sure you would have heard about that one.)

The entire family got creative with snow as a medium that year. I dug an igloo (that was mighty warm inside) out the snow my dad had shoveled off of the driveway. While my dad and brother built a snow woman holding a baby and a lowrider truck that you could actually sit in.

It’s been a few years since we’ve had a decent snow – meaning one to two feet. However, they’re predicting that Southwestern Virginia is in for a very wet and snowy winter this year. And while being cold is not my thing, I figure if it’s going to be cold, then it might as well snow.

Making Handmade Christmas Ornaments

Handmade ornaments were a family tradition when I was growing up. Every year my brother and I would would make a new Christmas ornament to put on the tree. And every year my mother would safely tuck the new additions away to go onto the tree yet again the following year. So by the time we were both married and out of the house, she had a full box and was already collecting new handmade Christmas ornaments from my son, and then later, my niece.

Every year, even if it’s on Christmas Eve, she puts up her artificial Christmas tree and trims it with those same ornaments. These days, there’s also a Christmas pickle hiding somewhere in the mix – I still haven’t figured out what the “prize” is if you find it first – but my brother always seems to win. Still, all the handmade Christmas ornaments, from two generations, are always on display. Even with that crazy Christmas pickle hidden among them.

This year was the first year in a quite a while I made a handmade Christmas ornament for my mother’s tree. I’m in my mid-forties now and she in her seventies. So if it was going to happen again, now was as good a time as any! She actually came home from volunteering the day I made these DIY essential oil ornaments and exclaimed how beautiful they were. Then she asked if she could have them for her tree. “Of course!” I exclaimed. “Who else would they be for?”

DIY Essential Oil Ornaments

My DIY essential oil ornaments will not only look amazing on your Christmas tree this year, they also make beautiful handmade gifts. What’s most surprising however, is how incredibly easy these Christmas ornaments are to make. Plus they’re ready to use in about a half an hour from start to finish!

So just what makes my essential oil ornaments so quick and easy to make? Unlike other craft tutorials for essential oil ornaments, I use plaster rather than clay. Plaster is not only cheaper, it also dries a lot faster! And, because plaster starts out fluid, you can not only customize the colors of your essential oil ornaments, you can also use molds, instead of cookie cutters, to get detailed shapes. So in reality, the possibilities are endless. Even if you have zero artistic talent. (But come on. EVERYONE has some creativity hiding inside. You just have to find it!)

Following is my tutorial for crafting your own homemade plaster essential oil ornaments. Learn where to get everything you need to make these delightful Christmas ornaments. You’ll also discover some tips and tricks that I learned along the way while making my own! (Plus don’t forget to check out my favorite holiday essential oil blends to make for your holiday ornaments after the project.)

DIY Christmas ornaments for diffusing essential oils on your Christmas tree this holiday season. Made using tinted plaster, these quick & easy ornaments are ready to hang or gift in about 30 minutes.

Materials & Tools Needed:

Plaster of Paris
Christmas Ornament Silicone Molds, two sets
Mixing Bowl
Utensils for Stirring
Mica Powder or Other Powder Colorant
Craft Glitter, optional
Bakers Twine or Ribbon
Essential Oils

Tips & Tricks for Making DIY Christmas ornaments for diffusing essential oils on your Christmas tree this holiday season. Made using tinted plaster, these quick & easy ornaments are ready to hang or gift in about 30 minutes. An easy DIY holiday home decor idea that also doubles as DIY Christmas gifts for Mom!

Tips & Tricks for Making Your Essential Oil Ornaments:

  • Plaster starts to harden in 3-4 minutes, so you’ll want to mix your colorant and glitter in with the plaster before adding the water.
  • If you want to save money, you can use unwanted eyeshadow colors from your eyeshadow palettes instead of using mica powders or other colorants such as oxides or ultramarines.
  • Unlike soap making, less is not more. As plaster is white, you’ll want to add more colorant for a darker colored ornament as the plaster makes the colors pastel.
  • While you can use glitter inside your Christmas ornaments, they don’t show through all that well. To save glitter and get more sparkle, dust the inside of your silicone molds before pouring the plaster. Or dust glitter on the backs of your ornaments as soon as they’re poured.
  • Be sure to scrape off any excess plaster from the molds after pouring. Your ornaments will come out of the mold more easily, and there’s less “excess” to remove once unmolded.
  • Try other ornament silicone molds for your Christmas ornaments for more designs. But be sure to avoid molds with thin sections as they’ll break coming out of the mold. If there’s no hole for the ribbon on your other molds, simply use a pencil or chopstick to make one once the plaster starts to harden.
  • You can easily resize your recipe for these essential oil ornaments to make the exact amount you need. Simply mix four parts plaster with three parts water.

Step one in making DIY plaster Christmas ornaments for diffusing essential oils. Mix the dry plaster together with the pigment of your choice and glitter if desired.

Holiday Ornament Instructions:

In a large glass or ceramic bowl, combine four Tablespoons of plaster with a teaspoon or more of mica or pigment powder and glitter, to suit, if desired. Mix with a fork to fully incorporate the dry ingredients together.

I used a small amount of indigo powder to color this plaster essential oil Christmas ornament. It made the ornament look about the same color as concrete, but with tiny blue flecks of color inside.

Combine plaster with pigment, glitter and water to make easy essential oil diffuser ornaments to decorate your Christmas tree for the winter holiday season. These DIY Christmas ornaments are quick & easy to make and also double as beautiful DIY holiday gifts when paired with a holiday essential oil blend.

Then add three Tablespoons of water. Mix well.

Working quickly, pour the plaster mixture into three of the silicone molds. You’ll want to use the Christmas tree shape mold and the ornament shape mold. Use a fork or a chopstick to make sure the plaster is evenly distributed throughout the mold and there are no air bubbles.

Plaster Christmas ornaments can't be made using intricate molds or Christmas ornament silicone molds with skinny lines as they break when removed.

Side note: The snowflake mold that comes with this set is too delicate to get the plaster out in one piece. I tried twice. The second time, the snowflake Christmas ornament broke worse than the first. However, you can use it for other holiday projects to make resin Christmas ornaments.

Then give them with a bottle of mom's favorite essential oil so they can be used as an essential oil diffuser on the tree or a holiday essential oil air freshener.

If desired, you can dust the back of your DIY essential oil ornaments with glitter or decorative confetti.

Unmolding plaster Christmas ornaments from silicone ornament shaped molds.

After 30-minutes have passed, carefully unmold your essential oil ornaments from the silicone molds.

Then tie thin ribbon or baker’s twine through the hole in the top.

Beautiful handmade Christmas ornaments you can craft with the kids in about 30-minutes to create a new holiday tradition for Christmas of making a new DIY Christmas tree ornament each year.

You’re now ready to gift your handmade Christmas essential oil ornaments. Simply pair the ornaments with a bottle of essential oil or a holiday essential oil blend.

Or add your own favorite holiday essential oil blend to your ornament and hang on your tree. You can also use this ornament in your car or another room in your home as an air freshener. They look great in a sunny window! (You can discover my favorite recipes for holiday essential oil blends below.)

When I was a little girl I would dye Easter eggs with my mother every spring. My mom would hard boil eggs and buy my brother and I an Easter egg decorating kit she’d picked up from the grocery store. We’d dye our Easter eggs a rainbow of colors and patterns. Using things like stickers, rubber bands and white crayons to create our own Easter egg designs. The one thing we never did, however, was dye our Easter eggs using natural dye.

As it turns out, it’s rather easy to learn how to dye Easter eggs naturally. You can still achieve a rainbow of colors based on the foods you choose. Or experiment with natural plant dyes such as indigo powder or turmeric. Just because you aren’t using commercial food dyes, doesn’t mean you can’t create a multitude of Easter egg designs and patterns. You can still do all the same things you did with traditional dyes. Methods such as wax resist or using stickers to create shapes work beautifully with natural Easter egg dyes too!

For the purpose of this tutorial however, I’ll teach you how to use plants, leaves and other foraged botanicals or herbs to create beautiful Easter egg designs. While also using common foods and herbs from the grocery store to create a rainbow of Easter egg colors. If you’re a soapmaker, like me, then I also encourage you to pull out your stash of all the natural dyes you’ve hoarded – er, collected – for naturally coloring cold process soap.

How to Dye Easter Eggs Naturally

Choose and prepare your eggs.

When buying your eggs, you should choose white eggs for bright colors. Or give brown eggs a go for more muted tones. Once you have your eggs in hand, hard boil them prior to dyeing. Alternately, you can also blow out the eggs for decorative home decor you can use through the entirety of spring. Or keep your eggs in storage to reuse the following year.

Decide on the colors you’d like to use.

I used onion skins and red cabbage to naturally dye my Easter eggs. Yellow onion peels impart an orange hue on eggs while red cabbage will turn your eggs blue. You can also use coffee for brown colored eggs. Or try one of these other color ideas:

  • Blueberries = Blue-Gray
  • Red Onion Skins = Green
  • Red Cabbage = Blue
  • Yellow Onion Skins = Orange
  • Coffee Grounds = Brown
  • Paprika = Light Red-Orange
  • Dill Seed = Brown-Gold
  • Grape Juice = Lavender
  • Violet Flowers = Green
  • Lavender Flowers = Blue Green & Brown
  • Beets = Light Pink
  • Beet Root Powder = Red
  • Spirulina Powder = Green
  • Turmeric = Yellow (Beware. This will stain everything!)
  • Hibiscus Tea = Black
  • Spinach = Yellow-Green

Make your natural Easter egg dye.

You should follow these guidelines for the amount of plant material to use when making your natural Easter egg dye. Adjust the recipe as needed to accommodate the number of eggs you’ll be making.

  • For spices and powders, use two Tablespoons per 1 1/2 cups water.
  • When using dried flowers or other botanicals, use four Tablespoons per 1 1/2 cups of water.
  • Combine one cup of cut fruits or vegetables with 1 1/2 cups of water.

How to naturally dye Easter eggs. It's super easy! Learn how to craft beautiful homemade Easter eggs using plant and food based dyes. As well as how to create unique botanical designs on your Easter eggs to give as gifts or use as holiday or spring DIY home decor.

Dye your Easter eggs.

Once you’ve prepared and measured out the plant material for your egg dye, you’ll need to combine the dye material with 1 1/2 cups of water in a saucepan. Bring the water to a boil, then reduce heat. Cover and simmer for 15-20 minutes. Then remove from heat.

Allow the natural dye to cool. Then strain out the plant material. Add dye to a bowl or a large mason. For every cup of water left (after the process) add one Tablespoon of white distilled vinegar to the dye.

Now add your eggs to the container of dye. Leave the eggs in the dye until they’ve reached the desired color. For deeper colors, place the container of eggs in the dye in your refrigerator and leave overnight.

Once the dyeing process is complete, remove the eggs from the dye. Place on a cooling rack or paper towel to dry. Then rub with olive oil, if desired, to add shine.

How to add designs to naturally dyed Easter eggs.

Leaf & flower prints.

It’s easy to use  leaves or flowers, like parsley or four leaf clovers, to create leaf or flower shaped designs on your Easter eggs. To do this, simply place the plant matter onto your egg. Then wrap the egg tightly in either pantyhose or cheesecloth to hold the leaf or flower in place. Next, simply follow the above tutorial on how to dye Easter eggs naturally. Your final eggs with come away with a beautiful design. If desired, you can go back and dye your eggs again with an alternate color.

Wax resist method.

Simply use a wax crayon or beeswax to draw a design onto your eggs. Then dye your eggs per the above instructions. (Be sure your dye is cool so as not to melt off the wax.) Once you’ve dyed and dried you naturally dyed Easter eggs, simply rub off the wax with a soft cloth.

Rubber bands.

Rubber bands are an easy way to add random stripes to your Easter eggs. Just wrap rubber bands around your eggs, then dye as usual. Once the eggs are dry, remove the rubber bands to reveal your unique Easter egg designs.

Tips for Hosting a Ladies Craft Night

2. Make sure to have plenty of craft materials on hand. There’s nothing worse than starting a project and then not being able to finish it.

3. Be sure to allow plenty of room for everyone to work. While a round kitchen table works great for up to four guests, I turned to my outdoor patio table for larger gatherings. A larger table also makes it easy to create a casual craft filled tablescape with all of your tools and materials. If you don’t have a table that’s big enough, try pushing two tables together so everyone can work together in the same space.

4. You’ll want to also provide drinks and refreshments for your craft night guests. Most of my friends are wine drinkers, so I like to have several bottles on hand. However, you can also make a delightful seasonal punch recipe. I also love to make a charcuterie board filled with a variety of meats and cheese, nuts and chutney. Hummus with veggies and pita chips are also always a win at a ladies craft night. Or make this amazing crowd pleasing black bean dip recipe.

I love using Wine Insiders to supply wine for my guests. They make it easy to offer a wide selection of wines to fit everyone’s tastes. Not only am I able to purchase top rated wines at a large discount, it’s also shipped straight to my door! This saves so much time (and money!) versus hunting and guessing for wines I think my friends will enjoy. If you’ve never shopped with Wine Insiders, you can save $25 off your first $50 purchase!  This is not a wine club so you simply make a purchase whenever you like. Check them out!

Plus how to make a decorative DIY spring mason jar for your seasonal spring decor.

By now you’re probably familiar with the term, self care. And maybe, like many of us who have busy lives, you’ve probably pushed yourself too hard to get things done, take care of your family and bring home a paycheck. Pushing self care off to the side once again. However, as we find ourselves emerging from those winter blues that left us unengaged, overwhelmed and completely exhausted, spring provides the perfect opportunity to turn things around by practicing a number of self care ideas.

Creative Self Care Ideas for Spring

1. Visit the craft store. (This is probably one of my most favorite self care ideas of all time.) The bright colors and fun new project ideas – not to mention the walk! – are a sure fire way to bring a smile to your face. (Just avoid the floral aisle if you have allergies like I do!) I made this super cute, decorative DIY spring mason jar after a recent visit to A.C. Moore. (Keep reading to learn how to make your own!)

2. Organize your makeup – and throw out the old! Not only does the task of getting rid of old makeup save your skin from potential bacteria that can cause breakouts or worse, the act itself is grounding and therefore therapeutic. Plus it gives you the opportunity to shop for those perfect eyeshadow palettes for the new season.

Upcycle your old makeup for use in art projects, then get creative with a new look for spring. Or learn how to make your own scented unicorn eyeshadow palette!

3. Subscribe to a beauty box for a fun (and useful!) surprise every month. When all you get in the mail is bills, it can make checking your mailbox rather dreary. Treat yourself instead with your favorite beauty and skin care brands by subscribing to a monthly beauty box! For smaller budgets I love my Allure and ipsy beauty box subscriptions! However, when I have the extra money, I am all about the green friendly Love Goodly beauty box that comes every other month!

I love that sometimes I get beauty products that inspire me to be adventurous. Sometimes it’s fun to pretend we’re eight years old again, playing with mommy’s makeup box.

Creative self care ideas to kickstart your spring. Learn a new craft! Stop playing Candy Crush Friends and get away from the television! 5. Make a homemade face mask. Not only will this improve the look and feel of your skin, but it’s a luxurious way to take a ten minute time out and do absolutely nothing at all. Choose from one of my many homemade face mask recipes. Or pick your favorite go to!

6. Read a book or magazine. Reading is one of the things that’s hardest for me to take time for. However, it’s something I really do enjoy. So take that hour and spend it reading that book you’ve had sitting on your shelf forever. Read a magazine or brush up on your favorite blogs.

Tip: Take all your favorite books with you on the go to indulge in waiting rooms or at the park with a kindle paperwhite! While paper is my passion, kindle saves my hands from cramping due to fibro. It’s a great accessory for arthritis sufferers too! The new kindle paperwhite is thinner, lighter AND waterproof – so it’s perfect poolside throughout summer.

7. Start planning your garden. Here in Southwestern Virginia we remain under a frost risk well into April. If you’re further north, that means you also have a wait before you can actually plant your veggies in the ground. That doesn’t mean you can’t plan your garden now! Decide which veggies or flowers you want to grow and draw up a mock garden bed. You can even start your seeds indoors to get a head start! Buy a garden planner to get started. Or shop for your favorite gardening supplies!

8. Dance your heart out. It doesn’t matter if you do it in your living room while watching YouTube, in the kitchen while you’re cooking or in a club to your favorite live band. Just dance! Not only will it help you sneak in a bit of cardio time, it’ll also boost those happy endorphins that will further energize you and bring a smile to your face!

First choose your jar. Then choose a small feathered bird to fit the size of the mason jar you’ve chosen. Now pick a collection of paper flowers or 3D stickers that work well with the colors you’ve chosen elsewhere. I used Little Birdie flowers and Little Birdie mini succulents. You’ll also need a strong glue that adheres to the surface of your jar. I used E6000 – my typical go to for bonding everything to everything else.

For the next step, you’ll begin by gluing the flowers onto the lid of your storage or mason jar. (I also glued a mini succulent to the inner bottom of my jar.)

Continue working by gluing more flowers in layers onto the lid of your jar. You’ll want to leave a small space in the center for your bird to nest.

Finally, glue the bird onto the lid of the jar. Once you’re sure the bird is firmly glued down, set the jar aside to allow the glue to dry and cure. (E6000 requires 48-72 hours to cure.)

Once the glue on your mason jar has cured, your decorative spring mason jar is ready to use!
