Crafting Is the Equivalent of Art Therapy
This year, quite frankly, has been insane. When people joke about the unusual times we’re in, I don’t they ever considered we’d be in something that resembles a blockbuster movie on par with an apocalypse sans the zombies. The stress of the daily news, political fighting, ongoing protests and the precautions we now have to take for a simple trip to the grocery store already have me overwhelmed. Then my dad and brother both had surgeries this month. Followed by my aunt being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
Writing, and trying to keep up with the blog, has been hard. I’ve also been struggling with panic attacks again. Something I’ve not had to deal with in a very long time. I also feel like I’m trying to take on the weight of the world while keeping my personal life hidden. I feel guilty for sharing what I’m feeling and what my family is going through as I don’t want to detract from everything that’s happening in the United States right now. We’re in the midst of a social revolution and chaos on all sides, while people are also dying from a virus we haven’t been able to contain.
For my emotional health I’ve had to take a step back from normal routines. They’re a huge challenge for me right now. Not having what one would call a “regular day job” has only made things more difficult. There are no office distractions or people holding me accountable. So it’s been easy to overthink things; and easier still to worry. Yet I’m constantly reminded that me being able to take time off for self care is truly a privilege and a luxury that many aren’t afforded. And I struggle with that guilt as well.
At the end of the day, I’ve decided to be grateful for what I do have. I count my blessings and help where I can. I continue to stand up for the underdog, for social justice and change. I’ve started working on my novel again. And I’ve been digging into new crafts as a form of art therapy. With health insurance the way it is these days, crafting is definitely cheaper than actual therapy. So, there’s that. Plus, it really does help. Crafting is a great distraction, while creativity is its own version of a healing balm for one’s soul.
As women, I think we often take on more than most. When times are especially stressful, it can all become overwhelming rather quickly. Like an avalanche crashing down a mountain. While journaling can be extremely helpful, not all of us are writers or enjoy the process. However, we can craft even if we believe we have no innate talent to do so. Like life, it’s the process, not the end result that matters most.
My struggle, however, is often choosing which craft to tackle next. There are so many different women’s craft projects that I want to try, but I’m never quite sure where to start or what to buy. So I started looking into the best adult craft kits for women to help me find a creative way to deal with anxiety and to learn something new. Honestly I craft best when I have a friend in tow. That’s why I love attending women’s craft nights so much. It takes away the pressure of having to make something completely perfect and turns it into an enjoyable experience, filled with socializing.
Unfortunately, the current situation in the United States (or the world for that matter) hasn’t allowed for this lately. And, believe it or not, I do often struggle to come up with my own ideas. I also find it hard to get motivated when left to my own devices. (It tend to be ADHD AF.) Therefore, my goal was to find adult craft kits for women that helped me get past this barrier (I somehow constructed for myself) and also provide actual paper directions so I can totally cut the cord from my devices while I play. Because no matter how hard I try to stay off social media, it’s inevitable that’s where I’ll end up. And as always, it’s the comments on current events that get me every single time.
What Are the Best Adult Craft Kits for Women?
Inevitably, I did settle on a company that offers the perfect adult craft kits for women. Annie’s Creative Woman Kit-of-the-Month Club offers the perfect introduction to a new craft kit each month. Like my beloved and oh-so-crafty Wine & Art Wednesdays I so miss attending with my friends, each of Annie’s monthly craft kits teaches me a new craft with all the things I need to enjoy crafting at home. And no kit is ever the same. They offer a different adult craft kit each month, specially created for women, to make everything from embroidery and melt and pour soap to crochet washcloths, hand painted refrigerator magnets and handcrafted jewelry.
I recently made adult craft kit for a cottage birdhouse. This adult craft kit definitely afforded me a new skill as I’d never tried making a birdhouse before. It came with everything I needed expect for a hammer and the glue. While I ended up using Gorilla Glue (which came with its own set of challenges) because heading to a big box store for wood glue gave me a panic attack just thinking about it, the project still turned out well. I didn’t make the door for my birdhouse as instructed because of the glue. However, I still think it turned out great. I’m also looking forward to going back at a later date and adding additional paint details to my birdhouse. I’m thinking some green ivy around the windows and door with bright, little flowers dotted throughout.
I had to first paint all of the pieces for my DIY birdhouse. The printed instruction booklet that came with my adult craft kit made with easy to lay out the pieces to determine what to paint each of the colors. I had more than enough paint to go back and complete touch ups. The paint dried really quickly, much to my surprise. Therefore this women’s craft kit took less time than I imagined it would to complete.
Annie’s adult craft kits for women can be finished within several hours. However, I took my time and spread out the project over the course of an entire weekend. As there was both painting and gluing involved with making my birdhouse, it made more sense to take breaks and work on it in stages. I did enlist a little bit of help with nailing everything together. While I’m sure I could have tackled this adult craft kit solo, crafting with others is still my favorite way to go about things.
Of course, help (especially if there’s wine involved) doesn’t always go as planned. Men don’t read directions, I’ve come to realize. (So definitely ask a lady friend if you need a power pal handy with hammers and the like.) All the while my friend is telling me you start shingles at the bottom, he’s nailing them in from the top. Needless to say, the shingles had to be removed and done over the right way. It was still a lot of fun, however, and I can’t wait to try new kits from Annie’s Creative Woman Kit-of-the-Month Club.
Overall, I love that each adult craft kits from Annie’s Creative Woman Kit-of-the-Month Club includes all the materials needed — except for common household items like scissors and glue. So I’m able to complete each project from start to finish with their easy-to-follow instructions. Plus, a new kit comes every four weeks. This gives me the chance to explore twelve new types of crafts throughout the year without ever having to leave the house. And while I love browsing craft stores for supplies, I definitely don’t miss waiting in the long lines.
