DIY All Purpose Cleaner in Chocolate Mint
Learn how to make your own simple DIY all purpose cleaner for a safe, non-toxic way to clean your home! You can stick to a normal “clean” essential oil blend when making your own DIY all purpose cleaner, but you really don’t have to! I scented my DIY all purpose cleaner in a fresh and fun chocolate mint scent instead.
I recently ran out of my regular Method all purpose cleaner and decided rather than buying more, I would make my own diy all purpose cleaner with ingredients I already had on hand. I re-used the Method cleaner container I already had by simply cleaning it out with a little Dawn dish liquid and water, then added my ingredients for the perfect easy to use and easy to make diy kitchen and household cleaner.
I did a little research for a good existing DIY all purpose cleaner first and found one on Fabulously Frugal. I ended up adapting it a bit in order to add some fun fragrance to my cleaner that gets used primarily in the kitchen. The result? A Chocolate Mint Scented All Purpose Kitchen Cleaner!
DIY All Purpose Cleaner in Chocolate Mint
Ingredients:
2 teaspoons borax
1 teaspoon washing soda
1/2 cup white vinegar
2 cups hot distilled water
1/2 teaspoon of Dawn dish liquid
1/4 teaspoon chocolate devil’s food cake fragrance oil
1/4 teaspoon Japanese peppermint oil
Tools + Materials:
a funnel
measuring cups/spoons
a clean, empty spray bottle (feel free to recycle!)
Note: I like to use Japanese triple distilled peppermint oil because it smells more like peppermint candy and doesn’t have that medicinal smell. The more peppermint essential oil is distilled, the more candy-like it will smell. Though you can use any peppermint essential oil of your choice.
If chocolate mint isn’t your scent of choice, you can simply substitute the chocolate fragrance oil for a grapefruit essential or fragrance oil for Grapefruit Mint All Purpose Cleaner. Or try lemon essential oil and peppermint essential oil for a fabulously fresh DIY Lemon Mint Kitchen Cleaner. (There’s also alway eucalyptus mint, apple mint, orange mint, or something entirely different!)
A great place to buy all natural, organic essential oils for your recipes is Mountain Rose Herbs.)
Instructions:
Use a funnel to add the washing soda and borax to your spray bottle. Then add your 1/2 cup of vinegar. (This does result in some foaming, but it should not foam over the lid of the container.) Once the foam settles, add the Dawn dish liquid, followed by two cups of hot water. (I found the water helps the dish liquid wash completely out of the funnel into the spray container.)
Follow with the fragrance or essential oils of your choice. Replace the spray top and shake well to mix. Voila! You now have a fun scented all purpose cleaner to use in your kitchen, bath or anywhere else in your home you desire!
To use, simply spray on and wipe off. You can also use sticker labels to make your own labels for your cleaner to keep track of what’s in your bottles. Also be sure to check out the DIY Homemade Shower Cleaner Recipe!
Although this recipe calls for very little washing soda and borax, you can use these same ingredients in your own homemade laundry detergent – you’ll find a DIY laundry detergent recipe here – or simply add to your regular wash for brighter, cleaner clothing!
