DIY Spray on Deodorant

Inspired by my boyfriend, who is a HUGE Phish fan and plans to on “drag” me to the summer festival, Lock’n, this year, I felt obliged to make a natural DIY spray deodorant for him. There’s nothing like 4-5 days of wook stink on a guy who likely won’t shower during the festival and doesn’t wear deodorant. While he’s technically what I’d describe as a little bit hippie – the urban dictionary top definition of wookiee (which they’ve misspelled as wookie in regards to this instance) is not particularly flattering of anyone. But the wookiee culture as I’ve learned has quite the following. So I figured, why not have fun with it? (For more festival DIY’s visit Soap Deli News blog here.)

I originally formulated my homemade spray deodorant recipe without any arrowroot powder. However, I found this made my deodorant spray feel sticky once sprayed on. Which was an absolute no go for my bf. So I added some arrowroot powder to the formula and voila! – I had my wook away spray!

I used a blend of patchouli, lavender and tea tree essential oils for my natural spray deodorant recipe. In the amounts given you’ll find this gives this natural spray deodorant a more unisex scent that’s not really floral nor does it smell like someone drowned themselves in patchouli. It’s more of a fresh scent that most people won’t find offensive and the essential oils were also of course chosen for their specific skin care properties. That they are anti-bacterial helps to prevent odors. However, feel free to substitute your own essential oil blend for scent preference.

I thought my natural spray deodorant recipe looked really great in the glass jars from Infinity Jars. I specifically used their 100 mL fine mist spray bottle for this natural spray deodorant recipe. Not only does the deep violet glass look great for this application with my “Wook Away Spray” labels (they appear black,) but these glass jars also offer an airtight seal and UV protection which will help to extend the shelf life of your final product. (You can find a variety of glass cosmetic bottles and glass jars for your skin care products at Infinity Jars here.)

Natural Spray Deodorant Recipe (aka Wook Away Spray)

As witch hazel is a wonderful, all natural deodorizer, it only makes sense to use it to make homemade deodorant. This DIY spray on deodorant is an effective, all natural way to fight odor causing bacteria without using synthetic ingredients or pore clogging aluminum found in most commercial options.

No Baking Soda Deodorant Ingredients:

How to Make Spray On Deodorant

I specifically used the witch hazel extract from Mountain Rose Herbs for my natural spray deodorant recipe as it’s been double distilled and contains 86% witch hazel extract and only 14% alcohol. However, if you prefer witch hazel without alcohol, then Thayer’s Alcohol-free Rose Petal Witch Hazel with Aloe Vera is a suitable alternative.

Here is how to make a spray on deodorant for your daily skin care regimen:

  1. Measure or weigh out the witch hazel in glass Pyrex measuring cup. (I used a digital scale to weigh mine as is habit for most recipes however measuring out the amount needed won’t affect product performance as the difference is so little.)
  2. Using a measuring spoon, measure out the magnesium hydroxide, arrowroot powder and pink Himalayan salt. Whisk these ingredients into the witch hazel until there are no clumps and the magnesium hydroxide and arrowroot powder have dissolved.
  3. Now, using a different graduated transfer pipette or glass dropper for each, add the essential oils and mix again.
  4. Use a small funnel to pour the mixture into your 100 mL glass jar and screw on the fingertip mister.

How to Use Deodorant Spray

To use this homemade deodorant spray, simply mist the solution onto clean armpits as desired. Be sure to shake the product vigorously before each use to avoid clogging your sprayer. Reapply afterwards as needed, throughout the day so you feel fresh and smell clean.
