How to naturally care for dry hands and skin

Skin Care Tips for Caring for Dry Hands & Skin

First, however, here are some helpful skin care tips to help keep your hands nourished and moisturized from the inside out!

  1. Make sure you drink plenty of water. If you’re thirsty, that’s a sure sign you aren’t consuming enough.
  2. If your environment is dry due to your region or the season, run a humidifier in your home to increase the amount of moisture in the air.
  3. Use gentle non-detergent soaps to wash your hands. Avoid using liquid and bar soaps made with cheap foaming agents that can strip skin of its natural oils. Instead, opt for a natural soap, such as a hydrating Bastille soap. Or try this unscented triple butter soap recipe specifically formulated for dry skin and eczema.
  4. If your regular moisturizer isn’t working, stop using it! Time and again I’ve had lotions actually make my skin condition worse and increase itching. Use a rich, whipped body butter recipe to soothe and hydrate dry hands. Or try this healing essential oil salve recipe with lanolin to lock in moisture.
  5. Give your hands a weekly spa treatment at home to help restore skin health. Soaking your hands for thirty minutes in warm water with a few tablespoons of baking soda not only soothes itchy skin, it can also reduce eczema symptoms and reduce flare ups. After soaking, follow with my DIY hand mask for dry skin.

Natural Moisturizers to Hydrate Dry Hands

Not sure which moisturizer to use for your dry hands? I recommend this vegan solid lotion bar recipe with plantain infused oil. Or try this easy hand salve recipe. You can also use this wonderful, all natural eczema treatment.

If money is tight, you can use something as simple as hemp seed oil if skin is especially sensitive or irritated. It’s a single, simple product that actually works without irritation. And, as it’s a dry oil, it absorbs quickly and is non-greasy. (It’s one of the many reasons I use it in my magic beauty balm recipe.)

Alternately, another easy alternative moisturizer to keep your hands smooth and promote healing is to simply use shea butter. Shea butter is a natural fat that is extracted from the fruit of the Karite Tree found in West Africa. It is a wonderful moisturizer and emollient, and also has anti-inflammatory properties.

You’d need to use a preservative. I’m not sure what the best option would be for this scenario. However, The Herbal Academy is offering a great emulsifier and preservatives course right now for a limited time that you may find useful to this end.
