Best Body Moisturizer Lotion Recipes
If you have acne prone or combination skin, you may find that using heavy body moisturizers causes breakouts. By opting for a lotion to relieve dry skin, you can moisturize without that concern. Lotion formulations are generally made with a considerable quantity of water or milk to hydrate skin. Due to this, they are often more lightweight than body creams, which have minimal water, or body butters, which contain no water. Therefore, they’re generally less likely to clog pores.
Because body lotions contain water, they also need an emulsifier to keep the oil and water from separating. That, combined, with controlled temperatures when mixing, ensure the perfect lotion.
However, it’s important to keep in mind that as body lotions contain water, they will need a preservative to keep bacteria, mold and other germs from growing and causing skin infections. If you aren’t comfortable using preservatives, but still want to make homemade body lotions, I recommend starting with a lotion base that can then be scented to your liking with either essential oils or a fragrance oil. Alternately, The Herbal Academy offers a seasonal course on working with both emulsifiers and preservatives in skin care which can be found here.

Thanks! I’m so glad you find them helpful. Cracked hands are the worst. I like to use lanolin in my recipes when this is the case.
