When I was a little girl I used to pick the leaves from weeds to make play salads for my parents. What I didn’t realize then was that those leaves I picked were actually edible! It wasn’t until many years later, long after I stopped making dirt pots and grass dolls, that I discovered that the weed I was so fond of, was actually an herb. That herb was plantain.

Plantain is a common broad-leaf herb commonly mistaken for a weed. This healthy, hardy plant can be found in backyards across North America and is nutritionally similar to dandelion leaves. Used medicinally by cultures around the world, plantain is a common herbal home remedy for both nutritional and topical skin care applications.

Nutritional Benefits of Plantain

Plantain leaves are best consumed while still young and tender. They have a nutty asparagus like taste that is delicious when pan fried or when added to salads. A naturally healthy herb, plantain leaves offer the following nutritional support (source):

Formulating An Herbal Plantain Salve Recipe

Mountain Rose Herbs has a new roasted cocoa butter available that I really wanted to try. So I was really pleased when it arrived at my doorstep last week. This stuff smells amazing. I love that it’s suited for both food and cosmetic use.

As it smells so wonderful, however, I really wanted to create a product that would highlight the natural scent of the roasted cocoa butter. I also knew I wanted something to create a natural skin care product that would be suitable for seasonal skin care and gift giving. Therefore, in the end, I opted for crafting a simple plantain salve recipe with a cocoa mint scent.

I love the simplicity of my natural plantain salve recipe. It’s formulated using just five simple ingredients – roasted cocoa butter, plantain herbal oil, beeswax, rosehip seed oil and peppermint essential oil. The cocoa mint scent, of course, is naturally derived from the inclusion of the organic peppermint essential oil and roasted cocoa butter.

Roasted Cocoa Butter

The roasted cocoa butter wafers from Mountain Rose Herbs aren’t deodorized. Therefore they retain their natural cocoa scent. Plantain Herbal Oil

While plantain herbal oil is easy to make, you can also enjoy the convenience of buying pre-made plantain herbal oil. This is especially helpful if you’re wanting to make natural skin care products using plantain herbal oil right away. Or if plantain is out of season throughout the cold winter months.

I used plantain herbal oil from Mountain Rose Herbs for my simple plantain salve recipe. An emollient oil formulated using solar infused plantain olive oil and vitamin E, this herbal plantain oil is especially nourishing for dry hands and skin. Crafted with certified organic Plantago major leaves, this natural herbal oil is perfect for gardeners, wild harvesters, climbers – or anyone else who works with their hands frequently. I also like to use this herbal oil, as is, on my dog’s minor cuts and irritation for a simple and safe natural remedy for his skin.

Rosehip Seed Oil

As I have both maturing skin, as well as skin that tends to dry out more in the winter, I also used rosehip seed oil for my plantain salve recipe. While this may shorten the shelf life of your salve somewhat, I highly recommend this unique carrier oil for its essential fatty acids. Popular in natural anti-aging skin care recipes, rosehip seed oil offers marvelous hydration for dry skin and a quick absorption rate. It can also be used solo as a natural daily facial cleanser or hydrating oil.

Beeswax

A key ingredient in homemade salve recipes, beeswax gives this plantain salve recipe its thick, rich texture. It also acts as a natural skin protectant while still allowing skin to breathe. In addition to its skin protectant properties, beeswax is also a humectant (meaning it attracts water to hydrate skin) and helps to temporarily reduce and soothe itching.

The beeswax pastilles from Mountain Rose Herbs have a deep, golden color and aroma. Globally sourced from less-developed countries like South America and Africa, their beeswax helps sustain the local economy of these areas while using traditional (less-modern) processing techniques.

Peppermint Essential Oil

A sweet, candy-like scented peppermint, the organic peppermint oil from Mountain Rose Herbs helps bump my simple plantain salve recipe into peppermint patty like status. This naturally steam distilled, certified organic essential oil has a fresh, very minty, hot, herbaceous fragrance with a vegetative back note. Peppermint essential oils is commonly included in natural skincare recipes and homemade salves and balms for topical pain relief, its anti-itch properties and the cooling sensation. It also supports circulation and can calm acne inflammation.

Simple Plantain Salve Recipe

Ingredients:

1 oz. roasted cocoa butter
1 oz. plantain herbal oil
1 oz. beeswax
.5 oz. rosehip seed oil
20 drops peppermint essential oil

Instructions:

You will need a digital scale to weigh out the ingredients for my plantain salve recipe. In addition you’ll also need a one or two cup heat safe glass measuring cup (such as Pyrex) and a utensil to stir your salve. I typically use a fork. You’ll also need containers for your plantain herbal salve. I used 1 oz. metal tins with rolled edge covers.

Once you’ve gathered the ingredients and supplies you’ll need, you’re ready to begin.

Start by weighing out the roasted cocoa butter wafers and beeswax. Combine in a heat safe glass container. Then heat either on the stove top using the double boiler method or in your microwave at 30% power until halfway melted.

Next, weigh out the rosehip seed oil and the plantain herbal oil. Add these ingredients to the same container as the cocoa butter and beeswax. Continue gently heating the ingredients until all of the ingredients for the plantain salve recipe have completely melted.

Once melted, remove the plantain salve mixture from heat and stir to combine. Then stir in 20 drops of organic peppermint essential oils.

Now pour your plantain herbal salve evenly into five 1 oz. tins. Allow the salve to cool completely then pop on the lids and it’s ready to go.

To use, simply apply to affected area as desired and massage in. You can also keep my plantain salve tucked inside your purse to use a natural cocoa mint lip balm throughout the year.

If desired, you can decorate the lids of your tins. I used nature stickers from Art By Sharell to decorate the lids of my plantain salve containers. However, washi tape also makes a fun addition and makes a simple, yet pretty package decorating idea.

Should you wish to sell the products you make from my plantain salve recipe, there is important information that you need to know if you live in the United States. Not only do you need to follow all FDA guidelines for labeling your products, you’ll also need to refrain from making any medical claims in regards to said product. It can all be very confusing. Because plantain is currently growing wild in abundance this time of year, I chose to include plantain infused olive oil in my vegan solid lotion bar recipe. Plantain not only helps with sunburns, but it is also beneficial for those with skin rashes and chapped skin as well as insect and spider bites. For eczema and psoriasis, the regular use of this herb in a salve or cream can also help in relation to those skin conditions.

What is plantain?

Plantain has the distinction of being a weed. However, plantain has historically been used not only as food but also as a healing herb in numerous cultures around the world. Native Americans traditionally used this plant to treat wounds and fevers as well as to draw out toxins from stings and bites.

There are two types of plantains and often you’ll find both while foraging as they do often grow together in the same area. The plantains with broad leaves are called Plantago major while the other narrow-leaved plantains are called P. lanceolata. Both have similar properties for medicinal and herbal usage, however many herbalists prefer the broadleaf plantain for its larger and softer, edible leaves.

When foraging for plantain leaves, you should choose an area where you know the plants have not been treated with chemicals. Choose unblemished slightly mature plantain leaves over new leaves as these will contain a higher concentration of potent phytochemicals that are beneficial for skin care applications. If plantain is not readily available in your area or you are unsure if the plantain in your area has been chemically treated, you can purchase broad-leaf plantain at Mountain Rose Herbs for your infusions. Alternately, Mountain Rose Herbs also sells pre-made Plantain Herbal Oil. This small-batch Plantain Oil is solar infused in a window on site using certified organic Plantago major leaves, organic olive oil, and a touch of vitamin E oil.

Lavender & Oat Vegan Solid Lotion Bar Recipe

Ingredients:

1 oz. candelilla wax
2 oz. oat butter
2 oz. plantain infused olive oil
.05 oz. lavender essential oil

Instructions:

Using a digital scale weigh out the candelilla wax and oat butter and combine in a double boiler. Heat until melted then remove from heat.

Next, weigh out the plantain infused olive oil and stir into the melted wax and butter. Follow with the lavender essential oil, weighing it first for the correct amount needed. Mix well.

Evenly pour the melted lotion mixture into the mold of your choice. As I am not vegan, I used single serve ice cream containers for molds. However, this basic guest round silicone mold also works for similarly sized solid lotion bars.

Allow the lotion bars to fully harden, then gently remove from the molds.

My vegan solid lotion bar recipe yields 3-4 small lotion bars depending on the size of the mold you choose to use.

Notes on Substitutions:

If you do not wish to use oat butter, you can easily substitute another hydrogenated butter for the oat butter. (Learn about oat butter here.) Alternately, you can also substitute the oat butter with refined shea butter which will make a slightly harder lotion bar.

If you prefer to use a fragrance oil for your solid lotion bar, you can substitute the lavender essential oil with .1 oz. fragrance oil of your choice.

For colder climates or for use during winter, you can increase the plantain infused olive oil to 2.25 oz. to make your vegan solid lotion bars slightly softer. This will allow them to melt faster when applied to skin.

Once you’ve made your vegan solid lotion bars, you will need to package them to protect them from dirt, dust and other elements. I wrapped mine tightly in foodservice film then decorated them with washi tape and stickers I purchased at Target. You can then place them into 2 oz. metal tins to store them in after they’ve been opened for use.

To use, simply massage the lotion bar onto dry skin and massage in. Alternately, you can also use this lotion bar in the shower after bathing to help lock in extra moisture. Then rinse and pat dry.

Natural Rosemary & Neem Oil Foot Salve Recipe

Ingredients:

4 oz. pure lanolin
1 oz. raw beeswax
1.5 oz. olive oil infused with calendula flowers, plantain leaves & comfrey leaves
.5 oz. shea butter
.25 oz. cocoa butter
1/2 teaspoon neem oil
1/4 teaspoon sea buckthorn oil
1 mL vitamin E oil
1 mL lavender essential oil
1 mL rosemary essential oil
1 mL fir needle essential oil
1 mL tea tree oil
1 mL rosemary extract

Instructions:

Begin by making your herb infused olive oil. To do this gather the plantain leaves, calendula flowers and comfrey leaves and place desired amount inside a mason jar. Cover the herbs with olive oil and tightly close the container. Keep in a cool, dark location turning occasionally for 4-6 weeks. To hasten this process, place the mason jar of oil and herbs in a pot filled about 2/3 of the way full with water. Heat on the stove on warm to low for 3-4 hours, then remove from heat and allow to cool. Once you’ve infused the olive oil with the botanicals, strain the oil through cheesecloth back into your mason jar.

After you have your infused oil you are ready to make your foot salve.

Start by weighing out the beeswax and cocoa butter using a digital scale and placing into a double boiler and heat. Once these ingredients are 3/4 of the way melted, weigh out the shea butter and lanolin and add into the double boiler. Continue heating until all of the contents have melted completely, then weigh out the infused herbal olive oil and mix into the pot. Remove from heat.

Using measuring spoons, measure out the neem oil and sea buckthorn oil and add to the salve base. Then with a fresh graduated transfer pipette for each ingredient measure out and add the remaining ingredients. Mix well, then pour into glass salve jars or tins and allow to cool completely.

If your mom loves the outdoors then she’s sure to love this nature inspired, plant based lavender mint balm recipe. Perfect for hands, body and lips, this homemade lavender mint balm recipe is made from natural lavender and mint infused oil and raw, unfiltered beeswax. It makes a lovely and thoughtful handmade Mother’s Day gift idea and is ready in just a few hours!

DIY Lavender Mint Balm Recipe

Ingredients:

3 oz. lavender & mint infused jojoba oil
1 oz. natural beeswax
1 ml GMO-free vitamin E oil
1.5 ml lavender essential oil (optional, if you’d like more scent)

Instructions:

To create this lavender mint balm recipe you’ll to begin by first making your infused oil. You do this quickly by combining your herbs – in this case lavender flowers and mint –  in a small saucepan and covering with the jojoba oil. (Feel free to substitute another carrier oil of your choice.) Set the heat on warm or the lowest setting and allow to “stew” for 3-4 hours. Alternately, you can fill a pot about 2/3 of the way full with water and then place a mason jar with your herbs and oil into the water over low heat. (More on this here.)

Once you’ve infused your oil, strain it through cheesecloth. It’s now ready to use.

Using a digital scale weigh out the beeswax and melt in double boiler. Then weigh out the lavender and mint infused oil and stir into the melted beeswax. (Keep your leftover oil infusion for future projects by keeping sealed and storing in a cool, dark location.)

Next, use graduated transfer pipettes to measure out the vitamin E and, if desired, the lavender essential oil. Stir into the liquified beeswax and oil mixture then pour into glass salve jars or tins. Allow to cool completely then use as desired wherever your skin needs a little extra love!

Want to mix this natural balm recipe up a bit more? Try infusing the lavender flowers with lemon balm (another mint), lemongrass or even lemon verbena. Or add 1ml of lemongrass or lemon balm essential oil into the balm recipe.
