Vegan Plant Based Makeup

Formulating vegan makeup is a fun and rewarding way to create fresh new makeup looks. There are lots of ways to make your own homemade cosmetics, however, DIY beauty sticks are one of my favorite plant based beauty products. Because they can be used in so many different ways, they allow me to cut down on the number of products I need for my beauty routine. Plus they’re great when you’re traveling or to throw in your purse when you’re on the go!

If you’ve never made your own vegan plant based makeup before, my DIY beauty stick is a great first recipe! Naturally scented with Bulgarian rose floral wax, this all-in-one DIY makeup stick can also be customized in your favorite colors. Simply swap out the mica powders used to tint this cream makeup stick with your own blend of lip and eye safe micas to create custom makeup looks.

Because this makeup recipe is plant based, I packaged my finished green beauty products in eco-friendly paperboard push up tubes. These tubes are 100% recyclable and biodegradable. I also created free printable labels for my all-in-one beauty sticks. These labels are free for personal use and fit perfectly on the paperboard packaging. You can find my labels for this plant based makeup after the recipe for my all-in-one DIY beauty stick below.

How to Make a DIY Beauty Stick

You will need a digital scale to make this vegan plant based makeup recipe. The scale will be used to weigh all of the ingredients. Here’s how to make your own DIY beauty stick.

  1. Begin by weighing out the candelilla wax and babassu oil into a small glass Pyrex measuring cup or similar. Heat in the microwave at 40% power until melted. Alternately you may also use a double boiler. Take care removing your melted ingredients from the microwave as the glass will be hot. I recommend using a towel or pot holder when handling.
  2. Next, weigh out the fractionated coconut oil (or camellia seed oil) and rose wax. (The rose wax gives this all-in-one beauty stick recipe a beautiful light rose fragrance!) Mix these ingredients into the melted candelilla wax and babassu oil until thoroughly combined and the rose wax has melted.
  3. Allow the mixture to cool slightly then weigh out and add the mica powders. Mix well so the mica is fully incorporated into the makeup base.
  4. Now slowly and carefully pour your rose scented all-in-one beauty stick into a container or containers of your choice.
  5. Once your vegan all-in-one beauty sticks have cooled, simply cap and label them as desired.

How to Sell Vegan Plant Based Makeup

Can you sell vegan plant based makeup? You are more than welcome to recreate my homemade cosmetic formulations to sell in your online shop or storefront. However, if you are making my all-in-one DIY beauty sticks to sell, there’s a lot of important information you should be aware of in order to be FDA compliant in the USA. You can find information on the FDA website regarding the use of color additives in cosmetics here.

In addition, mica-based pearlescent pigments and other composite pigments used in cosmetics are NOT FDA approved at this time. The FDA however is currently exercising discretionary enforcement of these color additives while they are in discussion over regulatory status and safety. You can find further discussion on this at Marie Gale’s blog here.

For help labeling your vegan all-in-one beauty sticks, I recommend the book, Soap and Cosmetic Labeling: How to Follow the Rules and Regs Explained in Plain English, by Marie Gale.

Plant based makeup is the new trend. However, you don't have to spend a fortune investing in premiere brand natural cosmetics to get it. Instead, try making your own! Simply start with a few natural ingredients and add micas to create your own custom colored makeup sticks!
